[00:00:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to the Lorehounds. We're your guides to Tolkien's world of Middle Earth. I'm David and today with me

[00:00:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I have Aaron from Lore of the Rings podcast. Aaron is a good friend of ours. We've collaborated with him

[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_02]: He's collaborated with us and I'm really excited to have him on because

[00:00:37] [SPEAKER_02]: He's gonna be talking about this cool event that he's got planned. Aaron, how are you doing? How are you enjoying?

[00:00:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Rings of Power season 2

[00:00:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Hello David, it's so good to be back with you and the Lorehounds community. I really love this audience

[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_01]: You've got some really really good fans here love joining in the discord the conversations and always just enjoy

[00:00:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Being here with you and and everything you've that you have going on here with Lorehounds. Well, thank you

[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's really fun to have collaborative partners and doing stuff

[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_02]: So what do you think of season 2 so far season 2 Rings of Power season 2?

[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_01]: So I've watched all eight episodes this recording all eight episodes are out and I'm gonna say that I am

[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Mixed I am mixed emotions and I'm talking this out with my wife and a few friends of mine

[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_01]: And I

[00:01:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Can't not yet decide if I like it because I actually do like it or because I feel like I should like it

[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh-huh, and I can't decide if I don't like it because I actually don't like it or I feel like I should not like it

[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_02]: So well if only there were a few other

[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Podcasters you could maybe get together with on a live stream and talk it out

[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly only there are other people out there who had some thoughts and some opinions about rings of power

[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Right that I could talk with

[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I had this idea and I think this idea actually

[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Was born when I started listening to Marilyn and Rings of Rituals a little bit because I was yeah

[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was pretty fuming after season one of Rings of Power

[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I was pretty angry about a lot of things and you know

[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_01]: There were some good things that you know that I enjoyed but I was on the whole pretty pretty upset

[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I started listening to Marilyn and and I forget her co-host name Sarah Dr. Sarah Brown. Thank you

[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, Dr. Sarah Brown

[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_01]: And rings of ritual and they kind of were explaining things in a different way pointing out things that I had missed or interpreted differently

[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_01]: And I thought okay, maybe maybe there's more good here than my initial knee jerk reaction

[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I I had that kind of thought rolling in my brain and then at the same time

[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm reading the letters of JR or Tolkien for the first time right now

[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_01]: And there's so many letters where Tolkien writes to his son Christopher and he says hey

[00:02:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I went out drinking with C.S. Lewis and the inklings and

[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_01]: They read this thing and I hated it

[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_01]: But then I read my thing and they all loved it and and he just would go on and on about these conversations

[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_01]: He would have with his friends who are all these literary geniuses

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_01]: And they were willing to call each other out for

[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Their the garbage and their stories

[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_01]: But they were also willing to give like constructive feedback and praise and all that stuff

[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Right, and I I got to thinking like hey, I'm a podcaster for lord of the rings

[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Rings of power brings up complicated reactions and emotions for me

[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Like maybe I could bottle a little bit of the magic that Tolkien and C.S. Lewis and the other inklings had

[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, and and come together and get a few people who are passionate about lord of the rings who are passionate about storytelling

[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And passionate about just the culture that we have going on

[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_01]: And maybe we could get together and have a conversation about rings of power

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Its themes its characters its story

[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And capture a little bit of that magic in that essence and that spirit of what the inklings had

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I like it

[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_01]: And then that's when I started to turn to

[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_01]: You and and john and the lorehounds and and maryland and a couple other podcasts and I said hey guys

[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_01]: I've got this crazy idea. How about we all get together one night totally unscripted two hours

[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Unfiltered live event. Let's just get together and talk rings of power

[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_01]: In the same way that Tolkien and Lewis and the inklings would do around a couple of pints

[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_01]: In the in the way down at the pub, right? Yeah the eagle and child

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_02]: That's the eagle and child will the barrows and oh, I can't remember it now. That was a tea house

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_02]: That was pre inklings that grove in tea club society that yeah, yeah exactly

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a common theme with Tolkien like whether he's like a college or you know a student or a professor

[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_01]: He's always kind of creating these little circles of

[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_01]: storytelling geniuses

[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Right that he that he that he encircles himself around he surrounds himself with these folks and so

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I was thinking maybe I could do the same take a little leaf out of Tolkien's book and say hey

[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Fellow podcasters fellow Tolkienites. Let's get together. Let's talk rings of power because I get stuck

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I see things and I get really angry or really excited about certain things

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I hear other podcasters and they either like confirm

[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_01]: My knee-jerk reactions or they have something totally different to offer

[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And I just thought where can I find some folks who have completely different opinions or interpretations to offer

[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_01]: That we could come together and just and just geek out about Tolkien and rings of power

[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Right and go go deep on the lore maybe a little bit and

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Look at the comparisons look at the films. Look at the the words

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so we've got you and john we've got Marilyn from rings and rituals and we have Diney from a podcast called captain's pod

[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Right. I I met Diney and her co-host Ian in we we collaborated

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_01]: They are a star trek podcast as you might imagine. Oh, excellent. Yeah, yeah

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And I collaborated with them just to say hey, how how might we like compare star trek and lord of the rings

[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, he and ron berry and jair Tolkien. What are like? Let's compare and contrast. Where are these ven diagrams?

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Where do they overlap? Where do they not?

[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, and it worked out really well because Diney

[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_01]: She is like interested in star trek

[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_01]: But she's the novice of star trek and Ian is like the real big trekky, right?

[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Lorehound if you will yeah, and so they play really well together

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I was like super deep in the lord of the rings

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_01]: And so Diney was and she is also really deep into lord of the rings

[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_01]: And so she was able to really kind of be this in-between person between star trek and lord of the rings

[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_01]: So I thought hey, let's let's get her perspective as the outsider

[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_01]: We've got we've got you and john as lorehounds

[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_01]: We've got mariland the librarian and I guess i'm just the wanderer and I just get to sit at the feet of all of your

[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Brilliant minds and ask questions and guide the conversation

[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_02]: So this podcast this with captain's pod is there you recorded a podcast?

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we did we did one episode together and uh, I think it's actually the longest episode of my feed

[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it came out to be about an hour and a half or so

[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay. Yeah, that's that's that's short for lores. Yeah

[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I know that short for lorehounds for for my audience on lord of the rings

[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I try to give kind of bite-sized pieces like 15 20 minutes if I go 30 minutes

[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_01]: I know i'm going way too long winded on my feet so an hour and a half of exploring tolkin and roddenberry

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Lord of the rings the star trek it was it was really beautiful

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_01]: It was so fun to see how you know, how do each of them approach religion?

[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_01]: How do each of them approach differences of cultures? What's what are their views on death?

[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_01]: What are some common themes there? So it was a really fun conversation we had

[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_02]: So those are available in their feed in your feed now. So folks are interested in that

[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so go find the captain's pod or lore of the rings

[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_02]: We'll put some maybe links in the show notes for folks to jump or they can jump on the discord

[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Cool. So when is this coming together of these podcasts?

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely. We are scheduled right now for friday october 11th

[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, uh, that's this upcoming friday. Okay scheduled to start at 8 p.m. eastern

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna run for two hours

[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_01]: And uh, we'll see how far we can get in two hours. We're probably we're gonna go over character plots

[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna discuss the moments we love the most the moments. We hated the most

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_02]: You've got a outline for us that we're gonna work from sort of I do I do I have a few

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_01]: If you have a few bullet points, I've but the other thing too is this will be a live event with audience

[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, so this isn't okay. Cool. This isn't going to be just like a couple of podcasters geeking out together

[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I do have a lot of things planned to keep the audience engaged a lot

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_01]: So we're gonna do some live q&a's some live polls. We're gonna take questions from the audience

[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I'll I'll probably throw a question out and let all of the podcasters

[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Kind of have their have their moment to say their thing

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_01]: But then we'll turn it back to the audience and have them put in some comments

[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_01]: So my hope is that this can be a really collaborative

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Conversation where yeah the the podcast host might be might be on the stage

[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_01]: But this isn't just a conversation between the four or five of us

[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_01]: This is this is going to be involved all of the audience there

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And using all of those live tools that you can do in a live collaboration conversation setting

[00:08:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, this sounds like it could be a lot of fun. I like this

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_02]: So that's going to be october 11th at 8 p.m

[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Eastern where how what do people do if they want to participate or join?

[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah to register today. Uh, you can go to rings podcast.com slash live

[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_01]: That's live

[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_01]: E

[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_02]: We'll definitely put a link in the show in our show notes for that and I think

[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_02]: John was going to maybe put something up on our discord as well like in our community announcements channel

[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that'll be wonderful. That link will take you to a site called crowdcast

[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Which is the host of our particular event you can register for the event there

[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_01]: We are asking for three dollars as a registration fee

[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_01]: But just so that everybody knows the plan is to take a portion of proceeds and to donate those to a

[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_01]: non-profit or a charity of of choice right now. I'm thinking there's just a lot of refugees out there in the world

[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Ravaged for from all sorts of different conflicts all out there

[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm looking at a few refugee type organizations to that we could that we could donate a portion of the proceeds to

[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, so rings podcast.com slash live they can register right now today

[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_01]: And then they'll they'll be in they'll get notifications and okay join us and review anything special

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_02]: To view or just a web browser click on the link when it gets sent to you and you can watch okay

[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Just so just a web browser. I do think when they go to register at crowdcast on the on the hosting site

[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_01]: They might need to create an account

[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, but that's pretty simple just kind of you know email user username password sort of a thing

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, um, but yeah after that you get notified in emails and and the whole nine yards

[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_02]: And then is the plan to what's the plan to do anything with this after is this ephemeral?

[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_02]: And this is just going to be it or or some of this going to be available in the in the future in different mediums and formats

[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, great question. That's still a little bit to be decided

[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I think there's a couple different ideas amongst the show hosts of what we want to do after this

[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, there is some thought of maybe we release it on our separate feeds

[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_01]: It's sort of a podcast episode or maybe this is something that we keep

[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Kind of behind a a paywall perhaps for the future for like evergreen download

[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_01]: So we're a little bit undecided on that still so or it's like a culture you got to be there

[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you know if you didn't see the grateful dead at this place at this time on this date this year like that was it

[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Right, you know, if you're not there you missed it

[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_01]: You missed it and that's and that's really the beauty of being their life is

[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Right, exactly. Do you get to engage with all of us as podcast hosts?

[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_01]: You do get to ask your questions and participate in the polls

[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_01]: And really have a just a collaboration together with your favorite podcast hosts

[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Order the rings. This is going to be pretty fun. I was like

[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, we're gonna do a thing together and but like you've got like, you know

[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Games and prizes and bells and whistles and

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like a good time

[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_01]: It will be a lot of fun and and I will just say one last thing if you if you scroll on social media

[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_01]: You look at any any post about rings of power

[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_01]: And you get total reactions from opposite ends of the spectrum people love it

[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_01]: People hate it

[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Right and the thing that I that really discouraged

[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Discourages me the most is you have Lord of the Rings fans who are like pointing fingers at each other calling each other names

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_01]: There you've got the conceded people who are like just go read the books

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, if you read the books like I did then you would know how stupid they say is

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_01]: You have and you get all sorts of attitudes and things and and I look at that and I'm like guys

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_01]: We have to be better than the star wars community

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Like the star wars community fan base. They're tearing themselves to pieces like all right

[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_01]: We on Lord of the Rings we have to be better. We can be better

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Like let's not be orcs to each other right, right?

[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_01]: We don't have to do that

[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_01]: And so that's really one of my hopes here is that we can come together as podcast hosts as fans

[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_01]: We can give a fair critique of the things that we feel are

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Are worthy of critique

[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_01]: We can praise the things that we feel are worthy of praise

[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_01]: But we don't have to be mean spirited or right about it

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Right and we can come together and have some some good dialogues and some faithful conversation

[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Just like Tolkien and his friends would do a round of pints at the pub

[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_02]: That's one of the things that we that we've grappled with over our time as podcasters is

[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_02]: how to be

[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Critical without being negative how to critique without

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_02]: It's it's such a it can be a nuance thing and in the day of social media where

[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_02]: You can just react so quickly and there's a lot there's not a oftentimes a lot of nuance in some of these written

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_02]: short form communications

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I really applaud you trying to reach out and seek for that

[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_02]: More um

[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_02]: supportive

[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Conversation and dialogue like okay. Why didn't you like this or what was that that was upsetting about it?

[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's get to the reasons let's illuminate it and I think that's it's really healthy because it's very easy to lose track of that

[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_02]: in in our

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Modern fast-paced day and age. I really appreciate you taking this on it's probably a lot of work

[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_01]: It is a lot of work. I am looking forward to it and uh, like I said before I just

[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm so grateful that there are other podcasso's and other fans out there who who are willing to participate in the conversation

[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_01]: And I I just get to again sit at the feet of these lower masters

[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like bill though at the feet of elrond

[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And uh, and and if we're gonna sit in the hall the hall of fire the hall of tales

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I can't even remember what they call it the fellowship ring, but but that's that's what we're gonna do

[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like it's gonna be a lot of fun. Okay, so

[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, what was the url one more time? Yeah, one more time. It's rings podcast.com slash live

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_01]: live

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And then if people go to lore of the rings to your website you'll have some information there

[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_02]: We'll put a link in the show notes

[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_02]: We'll definitely have something on our our discord for it and it's october 11th at 8 p.m

[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Eastern and tickets are three dollars with a big portion of those going to

[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Charitable causes. Yep, absolutely great

[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, well erin thanks so much for taking time to stop by I think we're all pretty excited and looking forward to this

[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_01]: And thank you for taking it on. Yeah. Well, thank you for being willing to participate

[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_01]: And uh as I like to say to my audience. Thank you for wandering middle earth with me today
