[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_06]: As you may know, it was the 45th anniversary of the movie that started the franchise off back in 1979.

[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_06]: And we had the latest addition to the franchise this year with the release of Alien Romulus.

[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_06]: As we've been evolving as a podcast over time, we've been experimenting with some new forms and formats

[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_06]: and the different kinds of shows and topics that we want to cover.

[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_06]: Our original Alien coverage started out as a simple one-shot to cover the 45th anniversary of the original 79 movie.

[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_06]: And then it sort of grew into a multi-part series.

[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_06]: The series included Aisha and I discussing the trailer for Alien Romulus and then setting up the project overall.

[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_06]: And then the special crossover podcast that we did with Aisha and we released that podcast both on every single sci-fi film ever,

[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_06]: as well as the Lorehounds feed.

[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_06]: And that conversation featured two academics, Roger Luckhurst and Jason Eberl,

[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_06]: discussing the history and the legacy of the 79 movie.

[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_06]: We also did a one-shot podcast with my fellow host, Alicia and Aisha from every single sci-fi film,

[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_06]: where we just talked about the movie and sort of geeked out on having fun on what an amazing film that is.

[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_06]: And then we had our Lorehounds one-shot with the reactions to Alien Romulus.

[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_06]: And for that, I was joined by Alicia and our co-hosts, Jean and Ron Dawson.

[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_06]: And then I also produced two bonus episodes for our subscriber community,

[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_06]: looking in-depth at both the trailers that were released for Romulus.

[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_06]: The second of one, which was a video-based sort of visual breakdown to the second trailer.

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_06]: So this is our last podcast in the series, our community reactions to the Romulus movie.

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_06]: I do recognize that it's October and I would have liked to have gotten this out sooner,

[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_06]: but nevertheless, here it is.

[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_06]: For this podcast, I solicited some feedback from Aisha.

[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_06]: I really wanted to hear what she thought of the movie after we spent all this time covering it in these various forms.

[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_06]: But then I did something that was a little bit new,

[00:03:37] [SPEAKER_06]: which is I hosted a couple of conversations with some of our listener subscribers.

[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_06]: This aspect of talking with members of our community is a new thing,

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_06]: and it's something that I hope we can do more in the future.

[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_06]: You know, specifically, John and I got started as podcasters because we were members of another podcast community,

[00:03:56] [SPEAKER_06]: and we had felt like we had something to say, so we fired up a podcast.

[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_06]: So having come from community, we're very well aware that there are others like us, people who have something to say,

[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_06]: but then for maybe standing up an entire podcast, that's not within the realm of possibility.

[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_06]: So I think this is kind of a cool way to engage and include some of those members who are not only supporting our community,

[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_06]: but they've got a point of view that they'd like to share.

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_06]: And I think that's what's cool about us, our community, is that we can share.

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_06]: We have the Discord.

[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_06]: We have our subscriber podcast where folks can share what's going on in their lives and such.

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_06]: And I think this is just one more way of opening up that boundary a little bit and bringing in some additional voices.

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_06]: And to that end, we've got a couple of more special projects in the works for which I'll be soliciting some more community feedback.

[00:04:55] [SPEAKER_06]: So we first have the 45th anniversary of Star Trek The Motion Picture.

[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_06]: That's the 1979 movie that rebooted the entire Star Trek franchise.

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_06]: For that, I'm going to be hosting a Lorehounds one-shot with a bunch of our other co-hosts.

[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_06]: And for that pod, we're going to follow our usual template and review the movie on its own terms,

[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_06]: sort of geek out on all the plot and characters and acting and all that kind of good stuff.

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_06]: And then I'm going to be doing another crossover podcast, this time with Ian from The Captain's Pod,

[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_06]: which is a dedicated Star Trek podcast that our friend Aaron from Lore of the Rings introduced us to,

[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_06]: Janae and Ian.

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_06]: And we're going to be doing another project with them for the wrap-up for Rings of Power.

[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_06]: But anyway, he and I are going to talk about the impact and legacy of Star Trek The Motion Picture

[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_06]: and get into some of the background and context of what that movie meant for the franchise.

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_06]: And then I'm going to be looking to have some conversations with some of our subscribers

[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_06]: about what the motion picture, Star Trek The Motion Picture, means to them.

[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_01]: You've made me do my homework for this, as I'm not as familiar on alien lore as I think you guys might be.

[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm fairly fanatical about the first film.

[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_01]: And the first question did throw me off kilter, I think.

[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Would you rather?

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_01]: That's a really strange question.

[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'd rather no.

[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Nope, absolutely not.

[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to live in this future.

[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to die in the Nostromo.

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to die in any of these places.

[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Because if there is a xenomorph, I do not want to be anywhere near it when it happens.

[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I would not deal with protocol very well.

[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_01]: I would let in infected people.

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_01]: I would be a mess.

[00:08:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I would be dead very soon.

[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, I don't want to be involved in any of this future.

[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_01]: There might be some semblance of a life on Jackson's Colony.

[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_01]: But personally, I need both sunshine and fresh air.

[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_01]: And so I could maybe set up some kind of revolution on Hadley's Hope or Jackson's Colony.

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_01]: But I think these places are generally quite revolution proof.

[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_01]: And also, once they're infected by a xenomorph, there's no hope in these places.

[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Not for Hadley, not for anyone.

[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_01]: So if I had to choose one, I think because of my own bias towards the first film, I'd go for the Nostromo.

[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_01]: And I would sign my death warrant.

[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_01]: But at least I'd get to have breakfast and some chats before I get consumed by a horrible, scary, large alien.

[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, now about the film at hand, Alien Romulus.

[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't do hot takes.

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Lukewarm takes at best.

[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I had a really fun time at the cinema.

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_01]: At one point, my husband said,

[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Kids in space!

[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_01]: And that made me laugh far too much.

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Very quietly, of course.

[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I am very respectful in the cinema.

[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_01]: And I enjoyed all the familiarity.

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_01]: And I suppose my lukewarm take is that,

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and I've read this online in other places,

[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_01]: people who agree with me, and I agree with them,

[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_01]: is that I enjoyed all the stuff that we love about Alien and the franchise.

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_01]: But I think it's that kind of balance of,

[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_01]: I do want Easter eggs and I do want those things.

[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_01]: But the fan service was,

[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_01]: it's a difficult balancing act.

[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_01]: You go too much on the fan service.

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_01]: You forget too often that you're watching a film

[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_01]: and not some kind of, you know,

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_01]: spot the homage.

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a strange balance,

[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm not quite sure if I liked it.

[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_01]: So basically, I don't know if I wanted a fan service film.

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I think I wanted something a bit more serious

[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_01]: and less nudge, nudge, wink, wink,

[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_01]: to all the older iterations of this franchise.

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Having said that,

[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_01]: I do think it gave me a lot of the positive stuff

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_01]: that I love about Alien and Aliens.

[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_01]: So you've got a fantastic final girl,

[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_01]: a questionable alien,

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_01]: a ragtag team of misfits,

[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_01]: and a kind of absolute lack of hope

[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_01]: against what, you know,

[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_01]: it's, I mean, as Ash said,

[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_01]: it is the perfect organism.

[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know,

[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_01]: apart from that final girl,

[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_01]: you're all going to die.

[00:11:14] [SPEAKER_01]: We're all going to die.

[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was speaking to my husband

[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_01]: about whether this film will breathe back life

[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_01]: into the franchise,

[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_01]: or if it is for some of us older people,

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_01]: elderly people,

[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not elderly,

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just slightly old,

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_01]: it will breathe back some life

[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_01]: or if it's actually going to be

[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_01]: like a fond farewell.

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Because it does,

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_01]: it is kind of a little salute

[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_01]: at the tip of the hat

[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_01]: and all that kind of things.

[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_01]: It's probably great for a younger audience

[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_01]: who maybe isn't as familiar

[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_01]: with the older films.

[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_01]: It's an interesting place to be.

[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_01]: We'll see,

[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_01]: because there's inevitably

[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_01]: going to be sequels to this

[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_01]: because of how successful

[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_01]: it's been at the box office.

[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_01]: So, let's see.

[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, the things that I think

[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_01]: worked in this film,

[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_01]: straight in,

[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm sure loads of people

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_01]: are going to say this,

[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_01]: is David Johnson as Andy the Android.

[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely phenomenal performance.

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_01]: I will definitely be checking out

[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_01]: his other work

[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_01]: and hope to see him

[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_01]: in a lot more things.

[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_01]: He's such a great actor

[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_01]: and switching between

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_01]: the two different directives,

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_01]: the two different roles,

[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_01]: he did it so well,

[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_01]: so seamlessly.

[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he is an android,

[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_01]: maybe he's not a human,

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_01]: we don't know.

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_01]: All the actors were really good.

[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Like, at no point did I go,

[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_01]: oh, this person got an act,

[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_01]: which is great.

[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you'd expect that,

[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_01]: especially on a big budget film.

[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_01]: But maybe due to being given

[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_01]: such a chunky role for him,

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_01]: he really stood out,

[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_01]: really, really stood out.

[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think everyone

[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I've spoken to about it

[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_01]: has said that.

[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_01]: And what else worked with

[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_01]: the thematic links worked.

[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I think they probably try it

[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_01]: every now and again,

[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_01]: but the themes around

[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_01]: reproduction,

[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_01]: pregnancy and birth,

[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean,

[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_01]: they really leaned into that.

[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think it was

[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Roger Lackhurst,

[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_01]: who we spoke to on the show

[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_01]: about the 1979 alien,

[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_01]: said in his review

[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_01]: of Alien Romulus

[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_01]: that this was apt

[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_01]: considering the US's

[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_01]: current stance

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_01]: on reproductive rights,

[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_01]: etc.,

[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_01]: which I always find

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_01]: that stuff interesting.

[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_01]: So I thought that was interesting.

[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_01]: And then themes around

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_01]: androids and free will

[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_01]: and human connections

[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_01]: and sentience.

[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I liked all of that.

[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_01]: And I loved the practical effects,

[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_01]: but for me,

[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_01]: what didn't work

[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_01]: was a little bit

[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_01]: too much CGI still.

[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I think especially

[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_01]: when it came to

[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Ian Holm's character,

[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I've been told that,

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_01]: you know,

[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_01]: it's very,

[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_01]: it's a huge kind of

[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_01]: nod to the games.

[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I've never actually played

[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_01]: the Alien games.

[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_01]: So I understand that,

[00:13:39] [SPEAKER_01]: but then again,

[00:13:39] [SPEAKER_01]: it's that thing of,

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_01]: it's the balance of,

[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_01]: do you want to do a nod

[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_01]: or you could just have

[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_01]: an actor act it?

[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I don't,

[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't lose that feeling

[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_01]: of being in,

[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_01]: you know,

[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_01]: in that space,

[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_01]: in the film.

[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Because every time

[00:13:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I saw his face

[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_01]: do a weird CGI thing,

[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I just thought,

[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_01]: oh yeah,

[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_01]: no,

[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_01]: it's a film.

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_01]: And it brings you

[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_01]: out of that trance.

[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's what

[00:14:00] [SPEAKER_01]: didn't work for me.

[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_01]: And my final rankings

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_01]: of the main films

[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_01]: are Alien,

[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Aliens,

[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Alien Romulus,

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Alien Resurrection,

[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_01]: and then Alien 3.

[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think a lot of people

[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_01]: get really

[00:14:18] [SPEAKER_01]: kind of passionate

[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_01]: about which way

[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Alien Resurrection

[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_01]: and Alien 3 go.

[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not really that bothered

[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_01]: which way they go,

[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_01]: but that's the way

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm putting it for now.
