[00:00:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Nicole, did you ever notice how the sign by Ace of Bass has really strange key changes?

[00:00:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I did not, Mark. I'm a real person.

[00:00:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, let me tell you about it. I'll let you talk about neuroscience gal di guc.

[00:00:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes! I thought you'd never ask.

[00:00:13] [SPEAKER_00]: This is the Never Mind the Music Podcast.

[00:00:15] [SPEAKER_01]: We're one psychologist.

[00:00:17] [SPEAKER_00]: And one musician.

[00:00:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Deep dive into the songs you love.

[00:00:20] [SPEAKER_00]: So you don't have to.

[00:00:21] [SPEAKER_01]: And there's plenty of time to get off topic.

[00:00:23] [SPEAKER_00]: From semi-charmed life to the way you move.

[00:00:25] [SPEAKER_00]: And who could forget the crossroads?

[00:00:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Is it THE crossroads or THE crossroads?

[00:00:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Save it for the episode, Mark.

[00:00:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Listen to Never Mind the Music.

[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Wherever you get your podcasts.

[00:00:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Hello and welcome to this special crossover podcast. I'm David from The Lorehounds.

[00:00:42] [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm Aisha from every single sci-fi film ever.

[00:00:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Today, Dave and I are going to talk about Alien Romulus,

[00:00:48] [SPEAKER_02]: which is the latest addition to the Alien franchise.

[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_04]: But first we're going to talk about our joint coverage plans,

[00:00:54] [SPEAKER_04]: since we're not only getting a new movie,

[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_04]: but it's the 45th anniversary of Alien,

[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_04]: the 1979 movie that started it all.

[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_02]: And then we're going to talk about the production details of the new film,

[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_02]: as well as talk about our reaction to the two trailers that have been released so far.

[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_02]: If you want more information on every single sci-fi film ever,

[00:01:13] [SPEAKER_02]: or The Lorehounds podcast, you can check the show notes.

[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_02]: And me and David will have a little chat at the end

[00:01:18] [SPEAKER_02]: where you can get more information about both of those.

[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Aisha, good to see you. How are you?

[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm doing great. How are you, David?

[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Great. I'm really excited for this new movie.

[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm excited to talk to you.

[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm excited for our two podcasts to have this joint project.

[00:01:31] [SPEAKER_04]: It's been a lot of fun putting it together.

[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm very excited because this is my first crossover podcast,

[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_02]: as you know, I'm quite new to the whole thing.

[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_02]: So it's really exciting for me. Yes. Thank you so much.

[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Very cool.

[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, we're great admirers of you over here at Lorehounds.

[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Likewise.

[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm really glad that, yes, it's been a lot of fun.

[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I can't believe your guy schedule though.

[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_02]: That stresses me out slightly.

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_02]: But I'm amazed that you guys maintain it.

[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_02]: It's amazing.

[00:01:56] [SPEAKER_04]: It's madness. It is.

[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_04]: And we just finished House of the Dragon

[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_04]: and we're about to start Rings of Power.

[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_04]: And we've got, you know, Dune Sisterhood coming later on.

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_04]: We got so much going on.

[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_04]: There's a lot of TV.

[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_04]: It's kind of an embarrassment of riches right now.

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.

[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Anyway, let's talk a little bit about our joint plans

[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_04]: for what we decided to do for this alien coverage.

[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Because as we mentioned, not only are we getting Romulus,

[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_04]: but it's the 45th anniversary.

[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely.

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_04]: So we are going to do a podcast together

[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_04]: where you're going to join probably one,

[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_04]: if not two of our other co-hosts from the Lorehounds.

[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_04]: We're still working on our scheduling details.

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_04]: But I don't want to, you know, commit to everyone.

[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_04]: But we're going to talk just sort of about the film as fans

[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_04]: and what we enjoy about the movie

[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_04]: and our personal histories with the franchise

[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_04]: and that kind of stuff.

[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Just kind of a celebration of the franchise overall

[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_04]: as well as the 1979 movie.

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_04]: And then over to you for the next podcast.

[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm really excited about that one

[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_02]: because film enthusiast is where I am.

[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_02]: But after that, we're going to do an academic discussion

[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_02]: with Roger Luckhurst and Jason Ebal.

[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_02]: And that is going to be about the 1979 film

[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_02]: and looking at it through a kind of context

[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_02]: and content kind of lens,

[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_02]: seeing what's happening around the US at that time in the UK

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_02]: where it was filmed.

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_02]: So hopefully that's going to be more in line

[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_02]: with what I'm familiar with.

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_02]: But it's going to be really exciting

[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_02]: to talk about it academically.

[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_04]: With more of your format in terms of working with experts,

[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah, talking to academics and experts

[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_04]: in the respective fields.

[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Very cool.

[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_04]: And then once the Alien Romulus movie releases

[00:03:37] [SPEAKER_04]: on August 16th, we on the Lorehounds

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_04]: are going to do a movie review,

[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_04]: one of our standard one shots.

[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_04]: And we're going to pull together whatever co-hosts we have.

[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_04]: I've already got a couple of commitments from folks

[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_04]: but we'll do that sort of as a standard format

[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_04]: for what we have for movies.

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_04]: And that will come out about a week to 10 days

[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_04]: after the movie releases.

[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_04]: So that way everybody gets a chance to see it

[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_04]: and we get sort of mulled over a little bit

[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_04]: before we come to you with our opinions on it.

[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_04]: And for Lorehounds subscribers,

[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_04]: there's some bonus content.

[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_04]: There's actually two trailers

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_04]: or trailer reactions that are out.

[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_04]: I did an audio only of the teaser

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_04]: and I just released a video breakdown

[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_04]: of the full trailer

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_04]: and both of those are available for Lorehounds subscribers.

[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Anyway, let's move into some of the production details

[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_04]: just to set the stage for the movie

[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_04]: so that we have some context for it.

[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_04]: The synopsis for the movie is it's set

[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_04]: between the events of Alien and Aliens.

[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_04]: The story concerns a group of young space colonists

[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_04]: who, while scavenging a derelict space station,

[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_04]: come face to face with the most terrifying life form in space.

[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_04]: So the director is Fede Alvarez.

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_04]: He's the director and writer.

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_04]: He's an Uruguayan director.

[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_04]: He is I think most known for a remake of Evil Dead

[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_04]: which released in 2013

[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_04]: and then Don't Breathe which was released in 2016.

[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_04]: I've not seen either of these films.

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Have you seen any of Alvarez's stuff?

[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_02]: I have seen Don't Breathe and I thought it was a very good horror film.

[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_02]: So I'm expecting that kind of paciness, I imagine,

[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_02]: to the new Alien Romulus.

[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_04]: And then his writing partner, Roto Saegis

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_04]: is a longtime collaborator with Alvarez also from Uruguay

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_04]: and is credited on both of those movies as well.

[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_04]: The cast of characters, we've got Kaley Spaney as Rainn Caradine,

[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_04]: David Johnson as Andy, Archie Renault as Tyler,

[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Isabelle Merced as Kay,

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Spike Fern as Bjorn and Eileen Wu as Navarro.

[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_04]: So this is going to be produced by Scott Free Productions

[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_04]: which is Ridley Scott's production company

[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_04]: and Brand Uine Studios which is the original,

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_04]: one of the original producer companies

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_04]: for the original franchise

[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_04]: and they're attached to most of the Alien movies

[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_04]: and products that we get.

[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_04]: It's going to be distributed by 20th Century Studios

[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_04]: and it's going wide release on August 16th

[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_04]: and it looks like it's got a just under two hour runtime,

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_04]: 119 minutes.

[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_04]: So let's talk about our initial reactions

[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_04]: to the trailer and the teaser,

[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_04]: mostly the trailer which just came out.

[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Aisha, what did you think of the trailer itself?

[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_02]: What I found really intriguing was from the first trailer

[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_02]: when they say something along the lines of

[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_02]: is this where you want to spend the rest of your life

[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and you hear a female voice saying,

[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_02]: you know I don't.

[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_02]: And then I know that it's Mal from Shadow and Bone

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_02]: so I know it's Tyler who says

[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_02]: then this is our only ticket out of here

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_02]: and I was so intrigued about what that is

[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and then the second trailer which I think is fascinating

[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_02]: is that it kind of puts that into a completely different perspective

[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_02]: because I was thinking is that going to be

[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_02]: to do with the corporation?

[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Are they being exploited in some way?

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_02]: But it says you want to break in

[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_02]: and steal highly regulated equipment

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_02]: and then Tyler's character says

[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_02]: this could be our only ticket out of here.

[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_02]: So they still could, I imagine the corporation

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_02]: is still going to be in there

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_02]: but it's interesting because it puts a twist on it

[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_02]: because first I thought poor little kids in space

[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_02]: going on this kind of whatever journey they're going on

[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_02]: but they're actually trying to commit some kind of

[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_02]: fevery which you know I'm sure

[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_02]: they'll still be protagonists or whatever

[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_02]: but it's not the kind of innocent little

[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_02]: exploited children that we would have expected.

[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah I thought the trailer itself was constructed

[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_04]: really well it really builds the

[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_04]: it sets the premise and it builds the tension

[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_04]: and it tells you what kind of horror we're going to get

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_04]: but I feel like for a two hour trailer

[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_04]: there's still so much more story

[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_04]: like a lot of trailers they really give you

[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_04]: a lot of the story too much like almost

[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_04]: and this one I felt it really narrowed in

[00:07:51] [SPEAKER_04]: on just a couple of key points

[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_04]: just to let you know hey you know

[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_04]: there's this group like you said

[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_04]: this group of kids they're kind of trying

[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_04]: they're desperate to change some circumstances

[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_04]: of their lives and then oops

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_04]: they get into something that's way more

[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_04]: over their head they're holding a lot back from us

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_04]: so I'm really expecting a lot more

[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_04]: I think the trailer did the job of the trailer.

[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah and what I loved was the introduction

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_02]: of the Jean Kelly song

[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_02]: You Are My Lucky Star which is from the original

[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Alien which apparently

[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Sigone Weaver ad-lib that wasn't part of the script

[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_02]: so she starts singing that in the original one

[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_02]: that's what I've heard anyway

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_02]: and the fact that they put that in

[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_02]: so it's such a contrast to what you're seeing

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_02]: you're seeing abject horror

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_02]: and there's this beautiful you know

[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_02]: singing in the rain old school

[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_02]: golden era of Hollywood musical

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_02]: number in the background

[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and then it kind of repeats but distorts

[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_02]: and then there's like a faint echo

[00:08:48] [SPEAKER_02]: as you can just kind of feel it going away

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_02]: so it's I think the sound design on both trailers

[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_02]: is phenomenal and I love the sound design

[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_02]: of the original Alien

[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I do wonder if it's my many years

[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_02]: of like podcasting and working in radio

[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_02]: that I have such an appreciation of sound

[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_02]: but the sound design on both of these

[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_02]: is phenomenal in my opinion

[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah in the teaser the first one

[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_04]: the teaser trailer

[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_04]: whatever they call these things

[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_04]: they blur the lines of what is what

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_04]: but the first thing that we got

[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_04]: we did get that motion tracker

[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_04]: from Aliens the little bleep bleep sound

[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_04]: and it was like the moment that that sound hit

[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_04]: I was like I just triggered into like

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_04]: oh my gosh what's going on

[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_02]: there is definitely a lot of like

[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Pavlovian reactions to this because

[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_02]: there's so many references to the earlier films

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_02]: that it just gets you kind of

[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_02]: like oh I kind of know where I'm going

[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_02]: with this but then there's a really slick

[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_02]: style it's still got that grittiness

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_02]: which really has got has in the original

[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_02]: but it's definitely

[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_02]: a modern it's going to be a modern take

[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_02]: on that I think

[00:09:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah and I thought that they demonstrated

[00:09:54] [SPEAKER_04]: that well as

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_04]: their style like demonstrated their style

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_04]: to us by

[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_04]: embedding the

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_04]: title cards into

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_04]: different portions

[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_04]: of the movie so

[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_04]: at one point in this

[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_04]: trailer when it looks like rain sort of

[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_04]: moves her weapon

[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_04]: and the flashlight flash against the wall

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_04]: and there's information there or it's sort

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_04]: of superimposed over a window or it's

[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_04]: back illuminated by a flashlight

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_04]: you know saying like when the release

[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_04]: dates are and things like that I thought that was

[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_04]: a very modern sensibility

[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_04]: and I thought it was a really

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_04]: well done

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_04]: and smart use for

[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_04]: using title graphics

[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah I never

[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_04]: felt taken out of the trailer

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_04]: I always was really immersed

[00:10:44] [SPEAKER_02]: What's interesting as well in terms

[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_02]: sorry to go back to the sign design but

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_02]: there's a horrible

[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_02]: crunch sound

[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_02]: which sounds very very kind of biological

[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_02]: it sounds like something's being stamped on

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_02]: perhaps even a human we don't know

[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_02]: right this is crunching sound or it could be

[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_02]: you know a face like that we don't know what it is

[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_02]: and then there's this kind of mixture

[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_02]: of kind of this mechanical

[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_02]: boom and then you get that

[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_02]: kind of laser set it's just such

[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_02]: a lovely mix of

[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_02]: biological and mechanical

[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_02]: which I think is quite a lot of what

[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_02]: alien is about because you've got this alien

[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_02]: true humans you've got

[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_02]: the synthetics

[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_02]: the robot

[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_02]: android kind of thing

[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_02]: so it's a very clever

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_02]: and I hope they are getting

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_02]: lots of recognition for their sound design

[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to leave the sound alone

[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_02]: but if I was handing out Oscars

[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to give it just for this one trailer

[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Thanks well you have to come back around

[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_04]: when we have our Oscar coverage

[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_04]: we do Alicia gets into a whole bunch of stuff

[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_04]: and we go through a lot of the films

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_04]: and things like that so yeah fingers crossed

[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_04]: for some sound design

[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I would love to see a behind the scenes

[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_04]: documentary

[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_04]: for this

[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_04]: and to have the fully

[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_04]: artists sort of featured that would be very cool

[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah because the sound does make such

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_04]: an important part and I thought to

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_04]: on that

[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_04]: the design of the sound

[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_04]: of the trailer so when

[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Navarro

[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_04]: is experiencing the chest

[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_04]: and K is holding her

[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_04]: they cut her

[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_04]: scream into the

[00:12:19] [SPEAKER_04]: background sound from the

[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_04]: diagenic sound and it was

[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_04]: it's perfect it really

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_04]: allows my imagination to take

[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_04]: over in a way that if she just screamed

[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_04]: it would be

[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_04]: it has less of an impact

[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_04]: of me just hearing her scream

[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_04]: as when they cut to the background sound

[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_04]: I thought that was a really smart clever way

[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_04]: to do that I agree and also

[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_02]: it then plays on that because they do it

[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_02]: in space no one can hear you

[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and then it's the scream so

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_04]: right so this whole

[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_04]: trailer

[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_04]: and the teaser that was initially released

[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_04]: it's

[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_04]: there's so many Easter eggs

[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_04]: there's so many connective tissue to the original

[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_04]: movies

[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_04]: I think less aliens 3

[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_04]: and more alien

[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_04]: and a little bit of aliens

[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_04]: but it feels

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_04]: fresh while at the same time being

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_04]: really well

[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_04]: rooted in the

[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_04]: story history of this

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_02]: franchise yeah I am very

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_02]: interested because they've really dedicated

[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_02]: themselves to the practical effects

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I imagine I hope that might be true

[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_02]: of any kind of physical

[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_02]: you know it's not going to be CGI heavy

[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_02]: of course it's going to be CGI because it's going to be in space

[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_02]: right it's a modern movie yeah

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah but it's going to be very light in the CGI

[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_02]: everything's got practical

[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_02]: effects have you seen the little remote control

[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_02]: facehuggers on social media that they've

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_04]: no no I've been trying to steer away

[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_04]: from a lot of the

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_04]: sorry no it's quite alright

[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_02]: there's a friend of mine who's like I need one of those

[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_02]: for a moment like that would be a really

[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_02]: good toy to have

[00:13:52] [SPEAKER_02]: probably not for very young children though

[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_02]: and yeah so they're doing

[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_02]: a lot of practical effects I

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_02]: saw Fall Guy in the cinema and since then

[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like we just need to go back to

[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_02]: really really backtrack on the

[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_02]: CGI situation because there's

[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_02]: something about physicality

[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_02]: and you know physical

[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_02]: real practical effects that it's just

[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_02]: more exciting to watch as a viewer

[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_02]: and I think that also

[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_02]: adds to the grittiness of it and the

[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_02]: realism which I hope

[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_02]: they're going to be able to carry through in this film

[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah there's something about the way

[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_04]: that if a real object

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_04]: is

[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_04]: the lighting and the way that the camera

[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_04]: interacts with it

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_04]: obviously with

[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_04]: CGI people wearing

[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_04]: golf ball suits and that kind of stuff

[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_04]: you know actors can react to things but still

[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_04]: it's weird right seeing this

[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_04]: like person in a green lycra suit

[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_04]: with golf balls all over them

[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_04]: versus having something that's a little bit

[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_04]: more real you can really generate

[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_04]: a different quality of

[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_04]: acting as well as just the way

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_04]: that light interacts with physical

[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_04]: practical objects so yeah

[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_04]: but then we were just watching

[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_04]: House of the Dragon and

[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_04]: the blending between the CGI

[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_04]: and the

[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_04]: matting and what is digital

[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_04]: matting as well as like CGI

[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_04]: creatures and that kind of stuff

[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_04]: it's gotten really good it's getting

[00:15:12] [SPEAKER_04]: harder and harder to

[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_04]: tell the difference between these things

[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_04]: hopefully these guys seem smart

[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_04]: about what they're doing with the trailer

[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah and I think

[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_02]: that's the thing that even

[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean we are amazed by CGI

[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_02]: right like the

[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_02]: last 20 years has completely changed

[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_02]: my kids will watch something from

[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_02]: 20 years ago and be like you thought this was

[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_02]: good yes we did

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_02]: it was really good for that time

[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_04]: that's right put it in context

[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_04]: please children put it in context

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_02]: so I guess that's the thing that

[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_02]: when I watch Alien or when I watch Space

[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_02]: sorry 2001 Space Odyssey

[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_02]: that still looks good to me

[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_02]: that still looks good and that's the thing

[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_02]: I feel like CGI although we're like

[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_02]: oh wow it is a spectacle and it's amazing

[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_02]: what they can do with hair and every

[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_02]: lighting everything bouncing off it

[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_02]: the kind of

[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_02]: what it's going to look like in 20 years

[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_02]: is it going to stand up like 2001

[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not really sure yeah that's

[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_04]: good point it's good point and speaking

[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_04]: of you know the next

[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_04]: generation and that

[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_04]: I think this

[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_04]: trailer and from

[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_04]: what I'm gathering from the trailer

[00:16:21] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm expecting that

[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_04]: this movie is kind

[00:16:24] [SPEAKER_04]: of I hate to use the word

[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_04]: reboot but it I don't think it's a reboot I think

[00:16:28] [SPEAKER_04]: it's a

[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_04]: there's a new they're trying to cultivate a

[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_04]: new generation of

[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_04]: fans so in

[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_04]: the 70s movie you know it's

[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_04]: it's truckers in space it's

[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_04]: you know there's there's management

[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_04]: there's workers you know they're they're really

[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_04]: average normal everyday people and hopefully

[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_04]: we're going to talk about this more when we talk with Roger

[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_04]: and Jason

[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_04]: but the

[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_04]: so that really captured because

[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_04]: people could see themselves on screen right there's

[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_04]: a spectrum of characters

[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_04]: that made sense and I

[00:17:00] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm wondering that if

[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_04]: we're centering

[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_04]: all of this around

[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_04]: a group of young friends who are

[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_04]: on Jack when we have to talk about this a little bit

[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Jackson's star colony

[00:17:12] [SPEAKER_04]: is this

[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_04]: is this their attempt

[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_04]: to reach out to a new

[00:17:17] [SPEAKER_04]: generation and

[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_04]: to bring some new people

[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_04]: into the alien franchise

[00:17:23] [SPEAKER_04]: because we're getting along I mean we've got

[00:17:25] [SPEAKER_04]: what seven films plus two

[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_04]: sort of spin-offs with the alien versus predator

[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_04]: and really

[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_04]: two and you know

[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_04]: two plus one are really the only

[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_04]: we can talk about that

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_04]: on the other podcast but

[00:17:39] [SPEAKER_04]: I think this franchise is due for

[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_04]: a really good solid

[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_04]: next production and if they do

[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_04]: that where they bring in

[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_04]: a younger

[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_04]: generation set into the fandom I think that's

[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_04]: that's a smart play as well

[00:17:53] [SPEAKER_04]: as well as an interesting storyline

[00:17:55] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I agree and I also think what's quite interesting

[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_02]: is that because alien

[00:17:59] [SPEAKER_02]: is kind of like of this

[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_02]: you know franchise it's the seminal

[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_02]: work but

[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_02]: there's certain things in that that can't

[00:18:07] [SPEAKER_02]: be repeated and yet I suppose

[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_02]: in every single film we want those same

[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_02]: kind of shocks and same kind of like

[00:18:14] [SPEAKER_02]: fears and horrors and

[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_02]: you know the

[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_02]: alien is a very much a psychological

[00:18:19] [SPEAKER_02]: horror it's very much low level

[00:18:21] [SPEAKER_02]: and you hardly see

[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_02]: you know the monster through that

[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_02]: and the reason aliens

[00:18:28] [SPEAKER_02]: works is that people always call it a war movie

[00:18:30] [SPEAKER_02]: it's so different from alien

[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_02]: it's not trying to recreate

[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_02]: that that kind of little thing

[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_02]: and I think that's what this film is going

[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_02]: to do is that you can't really recreate

[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_02]: alien you have to just come at it from

[00:18:41] [SPEAKER_02]: a completely different angle and when you see

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_02]: these trailers and you see these face huggers

[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_02]: flying all over the place

[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_02]: that's not like a small

[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_02]: slow sorry not small but slow

[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_02]: psychological horror that's definitely

[00:18:54] [SPEAKER_02]: oh my god when he says run

[00:18:57] [SPEAKER_02]: that's going to be

[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_02]: that kind of horror right right right

[00:19:00] [SPEAKER_04]: well and I love the way that the

[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_04]: whole trailer starts out are you sure you

[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_04]: want to do this right it's like

[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_04]: are you sure you want your seat

[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_04]: in the theater right now because

[00:19:09] [SPEAKER_04]: we're going to do something to you

[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_02]: that's good I like that

[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah I think that's a good transition

[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_04]: to let's talk a little bit about

[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_04]: what we have actually

[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_04]: I have seen in the trailer and the teaser

[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_04]: and what is it that

[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_04]: are you looking forward to

[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_04]: specifically from what visuals that they've given us

[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_04]: what are some of the things that are most exciting you

[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_02]: so I think like I just said

[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm looking forward to it

[00:19:34] [SPEAKER_02]: being a different kind of film

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_02]: to what we've seen before

[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_02]: obviously we like the fact that

[00:19:40] [SPEAKER_02]: it's rooted in

[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_02]: that kind of mythology we're going to the same

[00:19:44] [SPEAKER_02]: places but it does

[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_02]: even though it very well

[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_02]: kind of pays homage

[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_02]: to the earlier

[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_02]: episodes I think

[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_02]: this is going to be different

[00:19:55] [SPEAKER_02]: in its pacing and its style I think

[00:19:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Alvarez is going to

[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_02]: do things his way

[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_02]: whilst still being very respectful

[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_02]: of the franchise so I think that's going to be exciting

[00:20:05] [SPEAKER_02]: for me and

[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_02]: the other thing is I love

[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_02]: the fact that they're going heavy on the practical effects

[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_03]: of this and

[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_02]: I think what I really

[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_02]: want to know is the timeline

[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_02]: like this is between two films we know about

[00:20:20] [SPEAKER_02]: has Ripley

[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Scorni Weaver's character in Alien

[00:20:24] [SPEAKER_02]: return back are they sending

[00:20:25] [SPEAKER_02]: these children out knowing what's out there

[00:20:28] [SPEAKER_02]: what role does

[00:20:29] [SPEAKER_02]: the corporation have

[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_02]: those kind of things are really

[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_02]: interesting to me

[00:20:35] [SPEAKER_02]: like

[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_02]: I like it when they go heavy with the corporation

[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I want to know what the corporation is doing to these children

[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_04]: okay

[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_04]: fair enough

[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_02]: I keep calling them children sorry

[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_02]: it's just because I'm really old

[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure they're all adults and they're not minors

[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_02]: but they're so dewy skinned

[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_04]: fair enough

[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm really looking forward

[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_04]: to seeing how they use the

[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Romulus mythology

[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_04]: so the brothers Romulus and Remus

[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_04]: they're

[00:21:05] [SPEAKER_04]: it's about the founding of Rome

[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_04]: and we see in the teaser

[00:21:10] [SPEAKER_04]: the capitalizing

[00:21:11] [SPEAKER_04]: wolf as a symbol

[00:21:14] [SPEAKER_04]: on the door

[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_04]: of a lab it looks like

[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_04]: so how are they going to incorporate that

[00:21:19] [SPEAKER_04]: how heavy is that going to be

[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_04]: is that just a quick nod or is there something more

[00:21:23] [SPEAKER_04]: fundamental to the connectivity

[00:21:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's interesting

[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_02]: so the capitalizing wolf is the she-wolf

[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_02]: that fed both Remus and Romulus

[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_02]: and

[00:21:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Romulus went on to found the Roman Empire

[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_02]: but it's interesting because

[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Prometheus

[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_02]: can have this kind of history of

[00:21:41] [SPEAKER_02]: referring to things and how much of that

[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_02]: is just kind of a nod

[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_02]: how much of it is ingrained in

[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_02]: the kind of mythology and how much of it

[00:21:49] [SPEAKER_02]: you know I want to know how much of it

[00:21:52] [SPEAKER_02]: is surface quality and how much

[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_02]: of it is going to be kind of

[00:21:55] [SPEAKER_02]: are they going to be symbolic subtext

[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_02]: throughout the whole film so it will be really interesting

[00:22:00] [SPEAKER_02]: to know who they are

[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_02]: founding this colony so what's

[00:22:03] [SPEAKER_02]: happening yeah

[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_04]: and Scott was

[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_04]: he pulled from Joseph Conrad

[00:22:09] [SPEAKER_04]: for some of the

[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_04]: titles so the

[00:22:13] [SPEAKER_04]: the Sulaco

[00:22:16] [SPEAKER_04]: and I pronounce that

[00:22:18] [SPEAKER_04]: terribly the Sulaco

[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_04]: and the

[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Nostromo

[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_04]: thank you

[00:22:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Sulaco

[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_04]: so the Sulaco is the

[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_04]: marine ship right when they go back

[00:22:30] [SPEAKER_04]: with Ripley

[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_04]: so that's interesting so it's how much

[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_04]: are they pulling because I believe

[00:22:36] [SPEAKER_04]: they spoke a lot with

[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Scott and a lot of the original production people

[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_04]: are involved or helped with this

[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_04]: but yet it really does feel like

[00:22:44] [SPEAKER_04]: you're saying it's going to be fresh and it's going to be something

[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_04]: new so that's very cool

[00:22:48] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm really interested in seeing this

[00:22:50] [SPEAKER_04]: space station crash into the rings

[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_04]: of this planet that looked like an amazing

[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_04]: visual and I love how

[00:22:55] [SPEAKER_04]: like when you're dealing with the xenomorph

[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_04]: there's only one answer to the

[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_04]: solution and that is to nuke it

[00:23:02] [SPEAKER_04]: from orbit or whatever massive

[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_04]: total destruction you have to do

[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_04]: to be sure that's

[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_04]: like the only single way that you

[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_04]: can rest easy

[00:23:12] [SPEAKER_04]: is to you know go to

[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_04]: the fullest degree so it looks

[00:23:16] [SPEAKER_04]: like they're doing that to the space station here

[00:23:18] [SPEAKER_04]: I noticed

[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_04]: too there's a couple of new technology

[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_04]: bits in here one we have mother

[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_04]: 9000 and I believe

[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_04]: mother 6000 was the AI

[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_04]: on the ship on the Nostromo

[00:23:30] [SPEAKER_04]: so if this is set 30 years after

[00:23:32] [SPEAKER_04]: the you know or so if it's set between

[00:23:33] [SPEAKER_04]: sorry it's not 30 30 years has

[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_04]: to do with the television show that's coming up it's 30 years

[00:23:38] [SPEAKER_04]: before the first

[00:23:39] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm also very excited about yes very

[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_04]: anyway so this sets in between

[00:23:43] [SPEAKER_04]: the two movies so

[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_04]: there's been some advancements but anyway we see

[00:23:48] [SPEAKER_04]: something that looks

[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_04]: like an m41 a pulse rifle but

[00:23:52] [SPEAKER_04]: it's different so

[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_04]: you know what's that about

[00:23:55] [SPEAKER_04]: we also see that medical scanner that

[00:23:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Navarro has where that you know she's

[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_04]: able to look through her body that's that cool

[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_04]: little thing a great addition to body

[00:24:04] [SPEAKER_04]: horror so

[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_04]: you know the whole body horror element of this

[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_04]: and I think

[00:24:10] [SPEAKER_04]: my two big questions

[00:24:11] [SPEAKER_04]: are

[00:24:13] [SPEAKER_04]: what's up with Andy

[00:24:14] [SPEAKER_04]: who is being coded very much as a synthetic

[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_04]: we're getting you know I roles

[00:24:19] [SPEAKER_04]: and weird body positions

[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_02]: we get the eye twitch and I'm like 100%

[00:24:23] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah 100%

[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_04]: absolutely but then I here's my

[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_04]: theory so we see him carrying a little

[00:24:29] [SPEAKER_04]: like thermos thing that has some vials

[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_04]: in it and we see him twitch out

[00:24:33] [SPEAKER_04]: at a couple of different moments

[00:24:35] [SPEAKER_04]: here's my little theory

[00:24:38] [SPEAKER_04]: he has

[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_04]: some secret programming so they've

[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_04]: the corporation has

[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_04]: put into their synthetics into their AIs

[00:24:45] [SPEAKER_04]: that if you encounter

[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_04]: xenomorph

[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_04]: you switch into a different programming

[00:24:51] [SPEAKER_04]: mode and now your job is

[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_04]: to collect those samples

[00:24:55] [SPEAKER_04]: and get them back

[00:24:57] [SPEAKER_02]: and so this goes into

[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_02]: is he going to be a good

[00:25:01] [SPEAKER_02]: 100% synthetic or bad synthetic

[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and it could be both

[00:25:05] [SPEAKER_04]: yep because we see him

[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_04]: having a close relationship with Rain

[00:25:08] [SPEAKER_04]: they established that

[00:25:10] [SPEAKER_04]: and we see him there's at least one shot

[00:25:12] [SPEAKER_04]: where she's firing the pulse rifle and he's

[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_04]: behind her sort of

[00:25:16] [SPEAKER_04]: backing her up a little bit

[00:25:19] [SPEAKER_04]: but he keeps carrying this little thing

[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_04]: he keeps carrying this little thermos around

[00:25:22] [SPEAKER_04]: in a lot of the shots that we see him

[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_04]: so I don't know we'll see that

[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_04]: that's kind of fun so that's one of my thing

[00:25:27] [SPEAKER_04]: is like what's up with Andy where are we going with it

[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_04]: and then number two

[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_04]: during the teaser

[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_04]: when we saw the teaser

[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_04]: I was wondering like is this LB426

[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_04]: is this Hadley's Hope

[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_04]: you know is this where are we

[00:25:42] [SPEAKER_04]: but in this one we clearly see that this is not

[00:25:44] [SPEAKER_04]: this is Jackson's Star Colony

[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_04]: and you can see the scene

[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_04]: when Andy and Rainer walking through

[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_04]: a marketplace and there's throngs of people

[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_04]: and you can see clearly

[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_04]: on the right side of the frame

[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_04]: it says Jackson's Star Colony

[00:25:58] [SPEAKER_04]: written on a building

[00:26:01] [SPEAKER_04]: so as I understand

[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_04]: it and I haven't seen this quote directly from myself

[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_04]: but I've sort of heard second hand

[00:26:06] [SPEAKER_04]: that Ridley Scott has mentioned

[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_04]: that Blade Runner

[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_04]: and Aliens he believes Blade Runner

[00:26:13] [SPEAKER_04]: and Aliens are set in the same story

[00:26:14] [SPEAKER_04]: universe

[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_04]: and we see a little air car fly by

[00:26:18] [SPEAKER_04]: on the top of the

[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_04]: of the scene

[00:26:22] [SPEAKER_04]: that goes by and that's a very

[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Blade Runner scenes or that grey, reiny

[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_04]: you know that's that dark noir

[00:26:29] [SPEAKER_04]: visage to it so

[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_04]: this is not LV-426

[00:26:32] [SPEAKER_04]: this is Jackson's Star Colony

[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_04]: but what's that about

[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_04]: and what are they going to do

[00:26:37] [SPEAKER_04]: how much of that is going to play into our story

[00:26:39] [SPEAKER_02]: and do you know when Ridley said this

[00:26:42] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm saying Ridley like I know him

[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah, or Pal Ridley

[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_02]: do you know when he said this

[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_02]: because I want to know if it's like a retro

[00:26:50] [SPEAKER_02]: kind of thing or if it's

[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_04]: I think it was a while ago

[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't think it was any time recently

[00:26:55] [SPEAKER_04]: and I haven't

[00:26:58] [SPEAKER_04]: done any searching for it

[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm very nervous about

[00:27:01] [SPEAKER_04]: I was actually just trying to look up something really quickly

[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_04]: before we got on the microphones

[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_04]: and it started going people were like

[00:27:06] [SPEAKER_04]: oh this and that and he was in this interview

[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_04]: and I was like oh no I've got to stop close my eyes

[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_04]: because I don't want to

[00:27:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I really want to come to this movie

[00:27:15] [SPEAKER_04]: fresh but Alicia

[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_04]: mentioned that she had heard

[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_04]: an interview with him and then I remember

[00:27:21] [SPEAKER_04]: hearing that before, number of years

[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_04]: before that he said

[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_04]: that and like not recently

[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_04]: like I don't know five, six, ten years ago

[00:27:29] [SPEAKER_04]: something like that he's mentioned that

[00:27:31] [SPEAKER_02]: okay it's interesting I mean

[00:27:33] [SPEAKER_02]: it's all from him isn't it really

[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_02]: and also I like the fact that

[00:27:36] [SPEAKER_02]: the artist Mobius

[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_02]: is kind of I think about him

[00:27:41] [SPEAKER_02]: both with Alien and with Blade Runner

[00:27:43] [SPEAKER_02]: and he was involved in Alien production as well

[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_02]: so yeah interesting

[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_02]: theory I don't know if I'm very happy about it

[00:27:49] [SPEAKER_02]: but I'm sure I can come to terms with it

[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_04]: you mean with the two universes being

[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_04]: in the same story

[00:27:55] [SPEAKER_04]: even if it's not I just kind of like

[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_04]: the homage is fine

[00:27:58] [SPEAKER_04]: but if they're building out

[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_04]: the alien

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_04]: universe that's fine because what have we seen

[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_04]: because the prequels

[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_04]: were

[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_04]: set

[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_04]: whatever I'm not even going to talk about the prequels

[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_04]: we can talk about that in the other podcast

[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_04]: but maybe that's a question for Roger

[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_04]: we can talk to Roger about that when we do

[00:28:19] [SPEAKER_04]: the academic conversation is what he knows

[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_04]: about what Ridley Scott has

[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_04]: talked about the Blade Runner

[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_04]: and Alien universe

[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_04]: could be a section of conversation

[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_04]: so

[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_04]: cool yeah we can do that

[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_04]: any additional thoughts on the trailers

[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_04]: before we wrap up

[00:28:36] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that kind of covers

[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_02]: the excitement levels and the general

[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_02]: overview yeah

[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_04]: good I'm excited I think

[00:28:46] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like about August 16th

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_04]: you know

[00:28:49] [SPEAKER_04]: so

[00:28:50] [SPEAKER_04]: so what is going on

[00:28:53] [SPEAKER_04]: these days with every single

[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_04]: sci-fi film you just

[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_04]: released a podcast and it's in my

[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_04]: queue to listen to

[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_04]: but what have you got on deck for us

[00:29:02] [SPEAKER_04]: and what's coming up in the next couple

[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_02]: so yeah last podcast was

[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_02]: on Mad Scientist

[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_02]: of the 1940s because they

[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_02]: proliferated in that era

[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_02]: and then the next podcast will be

[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_02]: the academic discussion with

[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Roger and Jason so

[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm hoping to line that up

[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_02]: I release every two weeks which probably

[00:29:22] [SPEAKER_02]: seem very sparse to you

[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_04]: you're

[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_04]: a one person shop you gotta do what's

[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_04]: for you right so

[00:29:30] [SPEAKER_04]: you're doing a lot of prep

[00:29:32] [SPEAKER_04]: and I would say this for the listeners of this podcast

[00:29:35] [SPEAKER_04]: one of the things when I encountered

[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_04]: your podcast I was so impressed with is

[00:29:38] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah you get some great

[00:29:40] [SPEAKER_04]: guests on that's important

[00:29:42] [SPEAKER_04]: that takes a lot of work

[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_04]: who's involved in this

[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_04]: all the communications that ping-ponging

[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_04]: of emails when can we schedule

[00:29:48] [SPEAKER_04]: and all those kinds of things

[00:29:50] [SPEAKER_04]: and granted they're subject matter experts

[00:29:52] [SPEAKER_04]: but you're doing your research so that you

[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_04]: have these really intelligent conversations

[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_04]: with them and are able to have that

[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_04]: dialogue that's very rich

[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_04]: and it expands my

[00:30:02] [SPEAKER_04]: understanding of things so yes

[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm keeping a lot of praise on you

[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_04]: because I think you do a really good job

[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_04]: and if you have to do two weeks I don't care

[00:30:10] [SPEAKER_04]: if it was monthly I don't care I just

[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_04]: really appreciate the level of detail that you

[00:30:14] [SPEAKER_04]: put into your preparation

[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_02]: thank you so much I do think it's kind of unwarranted

[00:30:18] [SPEAKER_02]: because as I said that the specialists

[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_02]: are amazing and they do carry

[00:30:22] [SPEAKER_02]: most of it no I research a topic

[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_02]: for a few weeks they're literally been researching these

[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_02]: for like decades sometimes

[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_02]: right so I can just kind of

[00:30:30] [SPEAKER_02]: a lot of the times and I write this to them before

[00:30:32] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm like please correct me because I'm just reading

[00:30:34] [SPEAKER_02]: up stuff I'm corroborating

[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_02]: as best as I can but I'm not a specialist

[00:30:38] [SPEAKER_02]: so yes I do my research

[00:30:40] [SPEAKER_02]: but I'm nowhere near an expert

[00:30:42] [SPEAKER_04]: right but you're a fan

[00:30:44] [SPEAKER_02]: you're a big get- I'm a huge enthusiast is how I just go

[00:30:46] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm absolutely yeah

[00:30:48] [SPEAKER_04]: so people can find

[00:30:50] [SPEAKER_04]: you at every single sci-fi film

[00:30:52] [SPEAKER_04]: ever

[00:30:53] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah that's the name of the podcast

[00:30:55] [SPEAKER_02]: but they find me at the website every sci-fi film

[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm on Instagram

[00:31:00] [SPEAKER_02]: I post up whatever I'm researching and doing

[00:31:02] [SPEAKER_02]: on there which is again every sci-fi film

[00:31:04] [SPEAKER_02]: and yeah come join

[00:31:06] [SPEAKER_02]: and if you like a bit of history

[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_02]: old Hollywood science fiction films anything like that

[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_04]: absolutely and I can't wait to

[00:31:12] [SPEAKER_04]: get up to the modern age and then we're gonna

[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I'll be maybe collecting

[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_02]: a pension by then but I'll get there

[00:31:19] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm pulling for you

[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_04]: we're gonna do it so over in the Lorhounds

[00:31:22] [SPEAKER_04]: we just wrapped up with

[00:31:24] [SPEAKER_04]: we're just wrapping up with

[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_04]: House of the Dragons

[00:31:28] [SPEAKER_04]: season two we just wrapped up

[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_04]: with the acolyte

[00:31:32] [SPEAKER_04]: we have

[00:31:35] [SPEAKER_04]: brings a power

[00:31:36] [SPEAKER_04]: starting at the end of the month

[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_04]: we've got some stuff in between

[00:31:38] [SPEAKER_04]: we've got to get back around to the bear

[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_04]: so that'll be coming

[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_04]: we've got Dune sisterhoods coming up as well

[00:31:44] [SPEAKER_04]: and a number of other projects

[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_04]: we're gonna be having a very busy fall

[00:31:49] [SPEAKER_04]: but if you go into the show notes for this episode

[00:31:51] [SPEAKER_04]: you'll find a link tree

[00:31:53] [SPEAKER_04]: for the Lorhounds and there

[00:31:55] [SPEAKER_04]: on that link tree is a link

[00:31:57] [SPEAKER_04]: to all of our other affiliates because we have three or four other

[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_04]: podcasts that

[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_04]: we support and sponsor

[00:32:02] [SPEAKER_04]: as well as our Discord

[00:32:04] [SPEAKER_04]: and we have a very lively Discord

[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_04]: great moderator team

[00:32:08] [SPEAKER_04]: a lot of fun discussion

[00:32:11] [SPEAKER_04]: so I invite you to

[00:32:13] [SPEAKER_04]: join us there

[00:32:14] [SPEAKER_04]: other than that we're just going into

[00:32:17] [SPEAKER_04]: a very busy fall so

[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_04]: check us out if you're

[00:32:20] [SPEAKER_04]: interested in all kinds

[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_04]: of fun nerdy

[00:32:26] [SPEAKER_02]: you're all in the season starting right

[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_04]: oof we got a lot of stuff coming

[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_04]: down to us

[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_04]: if I sat here to explain it all

[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_04]: yes exactly

[00:32:35] [SPEAKER_04]: we'd be here for another 15-20 minutes

[00:32:37] [SPEAKER_04]: well Yishie it's been an absolute pleasure
