00:00 --> 00:01 [SPEAKER_04]: So, Alicia.
00:01 --> 00:01 [SPEAKER_04]: Hello.
00:02 --> 00:07 [SPEAKER_04]: We're here to talk about a new project that I've been working on with the guys from Radio Active Ramlings, Aaron, and Richard.
00:09 --> 00:16 [SPEAKER_04]: And this is something that started because I had asked you and David if you were interested and you won't be like, not bro.
00:16 --> 00:17 [SPEAKER_04]: It goes really your exact words.
00:19 --> 00:20 [SPEAKER_00]: It sounds like me, doesn't it?
00:21 --> 00:22 [SPEAKER_00]: I probably said bra.
00:23 --> 00:24 [SPEAKER_04]: You probably did.
00:24 --> 00:24 [SPEAKER_04]: You probably did.
00:24 --> 00:25 [SPEAKER_04]: I'm sorry to miscloth you.
00:27 --> 00:33 [SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, so the project is obviously to finally get me to read Brendan Sanderson that's not Wheel of Time, right?
00:34 --> 00:36 [SPEAKER_04]: It's exactly right, exactly right.
00:37 --> 00:38 [SPEAKER_00]: It's a byproduct at least.
00:38 --> 00:44 [SPEAKER_04]: This is actually specifically primarily a project to get you to want to read the books.
00:45 --> 00:46 [SPEAKER_00]: And thank you so much, guys.
00:47 --> 00:56 [SPEAKER_04]: So now that we've put all that work into this, um, we are, so what happened was we saw the announcement that Apple had acquired the rights to Brandon's Anderson's Cosmere novels, right?
00:57 --> 00:59 [SPEAKER_04]: And I was really excited about it.
00:59 --> 01:01 [SPEAKER_04]: I know a lot of people are really excited about it.
01:01 --> 01:04 [SPEAKER_04]: We saw some buzz in the, um, in the discord server.
01:04 --> 01:07 [SPEAKER_04]: And so I was originally going to do a lower-hounds project with it.
01:08 --> 01:15 [SPEAKER_04]: Since I was the only lore-hound interested in it, it kind of grew in ideas once Aaron and Richard expressed interest.
01:16 --> 01:19 [SPEAKER_04]: And we made this into its own podcast called Cosmere Corner.
01:19 --> 01:29 [SPEAKER_04]: It's going to be a full book club, no prior knowledge necessary, and you can jump in, read along with us a few chapters a week, and just have a good time with it.
01:31 --> 01:53 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm glad for this because one of the reasons that I haven't started on all this is just because it's like it's so much and then like where do I begin and like I want to be game with a long twist even though everyone tells me not to and so I just end up dragging my feet and the fact that you guys are doing this and you're doing it in like manageable bite size chunks.
01:54 --> 02:01 [SPEAKER_00]: that's, yeah, this is my impetus to do it, and I know that there are a lot of other people out there in the same boat as me.
02:02 --> 02:03 [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, definitely.
02:04 --> 02:06 [SPEAKER_04]: It's, here's the thing, it is a big series.
02:06 --> 02:14 [SPEAKER_04]: It's a massive series, but sort of like disc world and like realm of the elderlings, like there are biter, there are more bite-sized pieces of it.
02:14 --> 02:18 [SPEAKER_04]: There's, you know, we're starting with the Missborn original trilogy, which is only three books.
02:19 --> 02:21 [SPEAKER_04]: And that is a story beginning middle and end.
02:22 --> 02:25 [SPEAKER_04]: You can just read that without reading anything else and it'll totally make sense.
02:26 --> 02:42 [SPEAKER_04]: What we're going to do as we go on is we're kind of like holding your hand through dipping your toe into the Cosmere, and then as we go, we'll start drawing more connections with passbooks that we've read, and so I think it's going to be a good way to, you know, we have different levels.
02:43 --> 02:46 [SPEAKER_04]: Aaron is not done with the Stormlight archive, which is like the flagship series.
02:47 --> 02:49 [SPEAKER_04]: Richard has read this stuff like multiple times.
02:49 --> 02:52 [SPEAKER_04]: I am one who's read most of it once.
02:52 --> 02:56 [SPEAKER_04]: so we're we're having a good time of like leading people through this.
02:59 --> 03:05 [SPEAKER_00]: So, Mistborn is indeed the this first trilogy is what everyone recommends to me when they tell me to get into it.
03:06 --> 03:09 [SPEAKER_00]: But it's that going to be June.
03:09 --> 03:14 [SPEAKER_00]: Do we know already what movies and or TV shows apples doing or a timeline for that or
03:15 --> 03:21 [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so the first thing is going to be the miss board movies, and that's part of why we picked this to start with, um, Elantris has no adaptation coming that we know.
03:21 --> 03:21 [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
03:21 --> 03:22 [SPEAKER_04]: So nobody seems to like it much.
03:22 --> 03:31 [SPEAKER_04]: Well, it's a good book, but it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it
03:31 --> 03:36 [SPEAKER_04]: he was not originally intended as far as I know to be a Cosmere novel and he sort of like retrofitted it into it.
03:36 --> 03:37 [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
03:37 --> 03:46 [SPEAKER_04]: But because of that, it feels a little bit out of place, I think, compared to the other novels, whereas Ms. Boren, from the beginning, he's like, all right, we're going to have his thing, yeah.
03:46 --> 03:48 [SPEAKER_04]: You know, the Cosmere is the source of power here.
03:49 --> 03:51 [SPEAKER_04]: This is the universe and we're working on it.
03:53 --> 04:14 [SPEAKER_04]: and so that's that's why they're starting with that um it's it's really like the the first intended entry i would say interview cosmic and it's going to be the first thing that comes out on screen we're doing a trilogy of movies one for each book okay cool cool and brand attenders and writing the screen plays for them okay actually already finished the first one even though this was it sounds like four months ago
04:15 --> 04:33 [SPEAKER_00]: I would be very curious to hear now what how he feels about adaptations because he famously, I mean we won't get into the beef somewhat somehow with the way he talked about the wheel of time adaptation, but he famously he said for the longest time he didn't really want to do adaptations of his work, right?
04:34 --> 04:38 [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, well, he said he was going to be picky, he said he was going to be really picky about it.
04:38 --> 04:42 [SPEAKER_04]: And I think what happened was Apple was just like, you will have full creative control.
04:42 --> 04:42 [SPEAKER_00]: All right.
04:42 --> 04:43 [SPEAKER_04]: That's what won't happen.
04:44 --> 04:44 [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
04:44 --> 04:44 [SPEAKER_04]: Yep.
04:44 --> 04:45 [SPEAKER_04]: He was like, all right.
04:45 --> 04:45 [SPEAKER_04]: Good.
04:46 --> 04:46 [SPEAKER_04]: We're done.
04:47 --> 04:47 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
04:47 --> 04:54 [SPEAKER_00]: I want to hear how his attitude toward adaptations changes in general as he goes through this process.
04:54 --> 04:56 [SPEAKER_00]: I think that'll be interesting part of this as well.
04:56 --> 05:03 [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, I'm sure you will hear that also because he is a very transparent author of something that I admire about him.
05:04 --> 05:04 [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
05:05 --> 05:07 [SPEAKER_04]: And once a week he does a video update for his fans.
05:08 --> 05:08 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
05:09 --> 05:29 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, well, yeah, I hope you keep us surprised if we if you hear things on that front please definitely and so I'm looking and so I've decided I'm going to do audio for this just because my on paper reading list is too long and so I'm looking now at my preferred audio book outlet.
05:37 --> 05:43 [SPEAKER_04]: That's why it's supposed to be more like there's sound effects and this is my understanding.
05:43 --> 05:55 [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not sure if you do your own research, but to the listener, I'm not advertising anything, but I believe they do sound effects more full-cast kind of things, something that's, it's just a little bit more cinematic.
05:56 --> 06:03 [SPEAKER_04]: I don't like that in an audio book, I like to imagine things myself and I like to just hear somebody reading the words to me, but a lot of people do like that.
06:03 --> 06:13 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and you said, Michael Kramer, who I have never listened to the Wheel of Time audiobooks, but he is famous to me for being one of the two narrators of those.
06:14 --> 06:18 [SPEAKER_00]: A original narrator is not to, not to resume and piquicide.
06:19 --> 06:22 [SPEAKER_04]: Right, no, Michael Kramer and his wife Kate Redding, they read the Wheel of Time books.
06:24 --> 06:24 [SPEAKER_00]: Right.
06:24 --> 06:27 [SPEAKER_00]: And so, and he also reads, you said the Missborn books.
06:28 --> 06:29 [SPEAKER_04]: He reads pretty much the whole Cosmere.
06:29 --> 06:30 [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
06:30 --> 06:32 [SPEAKER_04]: Almost all the Cosmere.
06:32 --> 06:34 [SPEAKER_04]: I believe Kate writing has evolved at some points too.
06:34 --> 06:36 [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not a big audiobook person with the Cosmere.
06:37 --> 06:41 [SPEAKER_04]: I did do some of the Wheel of Time audiobooks, but no, he does a good job though.
06:41 --> 06:44 [SPEAKER_04]: Like, I've listened to the Missborn audiobooks.
06:44 --> 06:45 [SPEAKER_04]: It's really good.
06:45 --> 06:50 [SPEAKER_04]: And he, he has this like growl to his voice sometimes, like he's like,
06:51 --> 06:52 [SPEAKER_04]: What's gonna happen over there?
06:53 --> 06:53 [SPEAKER_04]: Like I don't know.
06:54 --> 06:54 [SPEAKER_04]: I like it.
06:54 --> 06:56 [SPEAKER_00]: It's a nice vocal fry.
06:57 --> 07:11 [SPEAKER_04]: He's got his vocal fry and You can go listen to that vocal fry and then come listen to my vocal fry right over on the Cosmere corner feed The fun thing for this though, Alicia, as you know Is that we're doing video for the first time on the network?
07:11 --> 07:15 [SPEAKER_04]: Well, not on the first time on the network because Dungeons and Duregs beat us to it
07:15 --> 07:16 [SPEAKER_00]: Right, sure.
07:17 --> 07:20 [SPEAKER_00]: You guys started recording this before they joined I think we did.
07:20 --> 07:29 [SPEAKER_04]: We did this was going to be our forehand video, but Dungeons and Diracs, you know, they cut to the front of the line, but it's a lot of fun.
07:29 --> 07:30 [SPEAKER_04]: It's going to be it's on YouTube.
07:30 --> 07:36 [SPEAKER_04]: You can find the links in the show notes and it's also on every podcast feed as audio.
07:36 --> 07:39 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and so I'm starting with Missborn the final empire.
07:40 --> 07:40 [SPEAKER_04]: That's right.
07:41 --> 07:41 [SPEAKER_04]: That's right.
07:41 --> 07:43 [SPEAKER_04]: And to listen to the preview, you don't have to read anything.
07:43 --> 07:45 [SPEAKER_04]: The preview would just describe what we're doing.
07:45 --> 07:52 [SPEAKER_04]: So you can just kind of hear some background on the Cosmere a little more detail than what we've gone through and then check our, you know, our reading list.
07:53 --> 07:55 [SPEAKER_04]: We're also doing a book club with it.
07:55 --> 08:00 [SPEAKER_04]: So, you know, we are doing, it's a book club format where we're reading a few chapters a week and then talking about them.
08:01 --> 08:03 [SPEAKER_04]: But we're also using this app called Fable, which is a free app.
08:04 --> 08:08 [SPEAKER_04]: You can sign up for the book club, you can see where we're at that week.
08:08 --> 08:13 [SPEAKER_04]: You can chat about just those chapters in the forum feature, and you can track your own rating on it too.
08:14 --> 08:24 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, yeah, I watched your first episode that it was a good introduction to what, I mean, because it caused me or something, obviously, being in the Wheel of Time fandom.
08:25 --> 08:31 [SPEAKER_00]: I hear a lot about Brando Sando as people call him, but it's like I said, it was just this.
08:32 --> 08:35 [SPEAKER_00]: an intimidating volume of work.
08:35 --> 08:39 [SPEAKER_00]: So it was nice to hear you guys sort of define what exactly is it?
08:39 --> 08:42 [SPEAKER_00]: Because I know there's something that's born that something's from like archives.
08:42 --> 08:45 [SPEAKER_00]: So it's good to hear you guys say like how they are and are not related to each other.
08:47 --> 08:49 [SPEAKER_00]: And I hope you guys keep up the wood you rather.
08:51 --> 08:56 [SPEAKER_04]: I forgot about the wood you're rather, I haven't listed it in the episode in a little while since I, I, I, I, I, I had a very long time.
08:56 --> 09:08 [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm so, um, you know, uh, learning video that I took me forever to edit it so that I haven't listened to it since, um, but yeah, well, we'll, we'll keep doing fun stuff.
09:09 --> 09:10 [SPEAKER_04]: We'll keep doing fun stuff.
09:10 --> 09:13 [SPEAKER_04]: Um, I should make sure that I say that this is a separate feed.
09:13 --> 09:17 [SPEAKER_04]: So you have to go in the link of the show notes to find that feed.
09:18 --> 09:19 [SPEAKER_04]: So make sure you subscribe to that.
09:19 --> 09:25 [SPEAKER_04]: We're going to play the episode after this, but this will be the only episode that goes on the lower-house feed.
09:25 --> 09:29 [SPEAKER_04]: So make sure you follow those links to subscribe and it's going to be a good time.
09:30 --> 09:30 [SPEAKER_00]: All right.
09:31 --> 09:34 [SPEAKER_00]: Can't wait to start the prologue tomorrow.
09:35 --> 09:36 [SPEAKER_04]: We'll see you there.
09:48 --> 09:55 [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm Richard and this is gonna be our series preview for new podcast to deep diving into the written works of Brandon Sanderson.
09:56 --> 10:04 [SPEAKER_03]: In this podcast we're gonna be talking about our coverage plans and reading schedule before giving you guys a little bit of background on Brandon Sanderson and his Cosmere universe.
10:05 --> 10:08 [SPEAKER_04]: Well, first we have to talk about who this podcast is for, right?
10:08 --> 10:10 [SPEAKER_04]: This is the first time that we're on air all together.
10:10 --> 10:13 [SPEAKER_04]: This is the first time we're doing a video as a network.
10:13 --> 10:14 [SPEAKER_04]: I'm very excited for that.
10:14 --> 10:17 [SPEAKER_04]: And it's first of all, pleasure to be here with you both.
10:17 --> 10:18 [SPEAKER_04]: So thank you both for joining me.
10:19 --> 10:20 [SPEAKER_02]: Thanks for having us.
10:21 --> 10:21 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
10:22 --> 10:23 [SPEAKER_04]: We're coming from two different podcasts.
10:24 --> 10:25 [SPEAKER_04]: I'm coming from the lower hounds.
10:25 --> 10:27 [SPEAKER_04]: You guys are coming from radioactive ramlings.
10:27 --> 10:32 [SPEAKER_04]: Now, we're recording this well in advance and I'm not sure exactly what's going to be out in June when this premieres.
10:32 --> 10:42 [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm not going to say what's on there, but I know you can find both those podcasts and all the other podcasts that we work with in the link tree in the show notes, but I first want to talk about why we're doing this podcast.
10:42 --> 10:45 [SPEAKER_04]: So who is this podcast for?
10:45 --> 10:46 [SPEAKER_04]: Aaron, do you want to go through that a little bit?
10:47 --> 11:02 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, absolutely, so I think that this podcast is great for new readers, you know, folks who are curious, they've heard a little bit about this crazy deal that Apple TV has come to with Brandon Sanderson and maybe they're going through the Cosmere for the first time.
11:03 --> 11:06 [SPEAKER_03]: This could also be good for some veterans who want to do a reread with us.
11:06 --> 11:09 [SPEAKER_03]: That's where most of us are kind of coming from.
11:09 --> 11:18 [SPEAKER_03]: and then also just folks who have no interest in the books and with love a little summary and a analysis without kind of the heavy 1200 page load.
11:19 --> 11:20 [SPEAKER_04]: So that's important.
11:20 --> 11:21 [SPEAKER_04]: This is for everybody.
11:21 --> 11:24 [SPEAKER_04]: We don't want anybody to have their experience ruined or spoiled.
11:25 --> 11:30 [SPEAKER_04]: So our spoiler policy is going to be no plot points that have not happened yet in the main pods.
11:30 --> 11:35 [SPEAKER_04]: That's the weekly pod that we're going to be doing covering a certain passage from one of the books.
11:36 --> 11:43 [SPEAKER_04]: we will be doing for subscribers only a monthly spoilery pod and in that we're going to talk about the connections between the books.
11:43 --> 11:45 [SPEAKER_04]: We're going to talk about why there are connections between the books.
11:46 --> 11:52 [SPEAKER_04]: We may talk about external statements from Brandon Sanderson, also sometimes called words of Brandon by the fandom.
11:53 --> 11:58 [SPEAKER_04]: But those will only be used if they don't conflict with the first law of no spoilers on the main pod.
11:59 --> 12:00 [SPEAKER_04]: Sound good to everybody.
12:02 --> 12:02 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah.
12:03 --> 12:03 [SPEAKER_03]: That sounds great.
12:03 --> 12:04 [SPEAKER_03]: I think no spoilers.
12:05 --> 12:13 [SPEAKER_03]: Great policy to have for all these new folks who are coming in because the Cosmere loves to spoil itself so we can get into some trouble real quick.
12:13 --> 12:14 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
12:14 --> 12:18 [SPEAKER_04]: It absolutely does and because of all the connections it's easy to slip.
12:18 --> 12:22 [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm going to be super vigilant when I'm editing these.
12:22 --> 12:23 [SPEAKER_04]: I'm editing them very closely.
12:23 --> 12:28 [SPEAKER_04]: I'm going to try to really, really be diligent about we're not going to talk about anything that hasn't come up yet.
12:29 --> 12:34 [SPEAKER_04]: But if you want the spoilers, definitely check out and we'll talk about at the end how you can get access to those episodes.
12:34 --> 12:38 [SPEAKER_04]: For now, let's talk a little bit about Brandon Sanderson and who he is Richard.
12:39 --> 12:40 [SPEAKER_04]: What do you know about Brandon Sanderson?
12:41 --> 12:44 [SPEAKER_02]: Um, I'll be honest, I don't know a ton.
12:44 --> 12:52 [SPEAKER_02]: I know he's a professor at BYU in something literature literature involved.
12:52 --> 12:57 [SPEAKER_02]: Again, I'm not super up to date on like him as a person and I really should be.
12:58 --> 13:00 [SPEAKER_02]: But uh, I know he's a Mormon.
13:01 --> 13:07 [SPEAKER_02]: And it's still a Mormon even though he has had some disagreements with the church, but I don't know.
13:07 --> 13:09 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know too much beyond that.
13:09 --> 13:15 [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, he continues to be a practicing Mormon, but he's he's openly disagreed with the church, especially on social issues.
13:15 --> 13:16 [SPEAKER_04]: But he also
13:17 --> 13:19 [SPEAKER_04]: tries to practice what he preaches, right?
13:19 --> 13:20 [SPEAKER_04]: He's in his books.
13:20 --> 13:22 [SPEAKER_04]: He's doing representation of queer characters.
13:23 --> 13:27 [SPEAKER_04]: He's really trying to push back against the parts of Mormonism that he disagrees with.
13:28 --> 13:37 [SPEAKER_04]: So I think it's a nice balance way to represent, you know, he is coming from a place of authenticity for himself and I appreciate that about him.
13:37 --> 13:41 [SPEAKER_04]: Um, a lot of people heard about Brandon because he finished a wheel of time.
13:41 --> 13:47 [SPEAKER_04]: That was the first big, you know, break into the big fantasy fandom that Brandon had.
13:47 --> 13:49 [SPEAKER_04]: Robert Jordan unexpectedly died.
13:49 --> 13:53 [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, he was sick, but he died a lot earlier than he had originally thought he would.
13:54 --> 14:03 [SPEAKER_04]: He had at least one wheel of time book left to write his widow, Harry McDougle, hired Brandon Sanders in after seeing Brandon's blog post about how much Robert Jordan meant to him.
14:04 --> 14:06 [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, and Brandon did a great job by all accounts.
14:07 --> 14:16 [SPEAKER_04]: I'm a big wheel of time fan, uh, Alicia's a big wheel of time fan on the Laura Hounds network, and I know we both really love those books that Brandon did.
14:16 --> 14:19 [SPEAKER_04]: He split up the last intended book by Jordan into three books.
14:20 --> 14:21 [SPEAKER_04]: I think it makes sense of so much plot.
14:22 --> 14:27 [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, and that really got me interested to in digging a little deeper into Brandon.
14:27 --> 14:30 [SPEAKER_04]: Um, but we'll get into our personal history in a minute.
14:31 --> 14:35 [SPEAKER_04]: What I wanted to go into also is the other Sandra Spritter.
14:35 --> 14:47 [SPEAKER_04]: I'm calling, you know, this is this big event that caused people to discover Brandon Sanders and was the 2022 Kickstarter campaign in which Brandon had ridden a bunch of secret novels during the pandemic.
14:47 --> 14:55 [SPEAKER_04]: And he said, well, you know what, instead of going through traditional publishing, I'm going to raise a ton of money on Kickstarter, begin the biggest Kickstarter of that genre.
14:55 --> 14:56 [SPEAKER_04]: I think at the time, and now,
14:57 --> 15:11 [SPEAKER_04]: And he released those books to his backers all at one year, so four extra books, and I think there was a fifth book somewhere along the line, but I think that that was another big Sandra Spreader event.
15:12 --> 15:16 [SPEAKER_04]: On his publication history, Aaron, do you want to go into that?
15:17 --> 15:20 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so Sanderson came to this pretty early.
15:20 --> 15:23 [SPEAKER_03]: He published his first novel, Alantris in 2005.
15:24 --> 15:31 [SPEAKER_03]: And since then, this guy has published 71 books of those 71, 25-ish, are CosmereWorks.
15:31 --> 15:38 [SPEAKER_03]: At the time of this recording, that could change very quickly as he likes to put out books faster than we can read them.
15:39 --> 15:42 [SPEAKER_03]: But we will be focused just on the CosmereWorks in this podcast.
15:42 --> 15:46 [SPEAKER_03]: So don't worry about us going into all of his other
15:47 --> 15:48 [SPEAKER_03]: two-thirds of his collection.
15:48 --> 15:49 [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
15:50 --> 15:52 [SPEAKER_04]: Although this guy writes books faster than we can cover them.
15:52 --> 15:58 [SPEAKER_04]: So sorry folks, we're going to be following behind the brand and curve real quick if we don't get this podcast weekly.
15:59 --> 15:59 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
15:59 --> 16:06 [SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, hey, he writes amazing books despite putting out so many in such a short amount of time.
16:06 --> 16:09 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the secret projects along were great.
16:09 --> 16:12 [SPEAKER_02]: I got to finish all of them, but he's a great
16:14 --> 16:14 [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, he is.
16:15 --> 16:15 [SPEAKER_04]: He is.
16:15 --> 16:21 [SPEAKER_04]: I think he has a very unique style and we'll talk about a little bit of his stylistic stuff later on.
16:21 --> 16:25 [SPEAKER_04]: But first of all, can we just get to the title of this podcast?
16:25 --> 16:26 [SPEAKER_04]: It's Cosmere Corner.
16:27 --> 16:29 [SPEAKER_04]: We're here to talk about the Cosmere and we keep using this word.
16:30 --> 16:34 [SPEAKER_04]: And if you're not already a fan of Brandon Sanders and you might not know exactly what that means,
16:34 --> 16:36 [SPEAKER_04]: So what is the Cosmere?
16:37 --> 16:41 [SPEAKER_04]: It's a series of interconnected stories, essentially.
16:42 --> 16:48 [SPEAKER_04]: And Brandon's website has what I think is the best summation, a detailed summation.
16:48 --> 16:49 [SPEAKER_03]: Aaron, do you want to read that?
16:50 --> 16:53 [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely, straight from Brandon's website.
16:53 --> 16:59 [SPEAKER_03]: The Cosmere is the fictional universe I created for many of my fantasy novels to take place within.
16:59 --> 17:06 [SPEAKER_03]: Currently, a launchers, Missborn, Warbreaker, the Stormlight Archive, White Sand, and anything from Arcane Among Bound are part of the Cosmere.
17:07 --> 17:17 [SPEAKER_03]: And I've tried my best to make the distinction clear on the book's page of my site here, which will give you a good idea where my stories take place, whether within the Cosmere or outside of it.
17:18 --> 17:25 [SPEAKER_03]: All of my Cosmar books share a single creation myth, a single cosmology that gives underlying theorem of magic for all of these connected worlds.
17:26 --> 17:36 [SPEAKER_03]: The theorem is not simple, I can't really encapsulate it in one sentence, that's an understatement, but you can map out how all the magic all fits together in the Cosmar using this kind of super theorem.
17:37 --> 17:41 [SPEAKER_03]: Since all the worlds in the Cosmere are connected, that means you should pay attention.
17:42 --> 17:45 [SPEAKER_03]: Certain characters from one series sometimes show up in other series.
17:45 --> 17:53 [SPEAKER_03]: You don't often need to know this is going on to enjoy the book, but if you keep your eyes open, you'll be rewarded with glimpses of these world hoppers now and then.
17:55 --> 17:56 [SPEAKER_04]: So in simpler terms.
17:57 --> 17:59 [SPEAKER_04]: We're talking about one universe, right?
17:59 --> 18:08 [SPEAKER_04]: There's one universe that shares a single magic system or rather a single magic source, but manifests itself differently in different magic systems depending on the solar system that you're in.
18:09 --> 18:10 [SPEAKER_04]: If that sounds complicated,
18:11 --> 18:13 [SPEAKER_04]: each of these series is going to be self-contained.
18:13 --> 18:18 [SPEAKER_04]: So you're not going to have to remember too much about other books while you're reading a single book.
18:19 --> 18:30 [SPEAKER_04]: We're going to be starting in one universe on the Missborn series and that's going to follow one planet, one magic system, well, kind of, but we'll get it to that.
18:32 --> 18:42 [SPEAKER_04]: And we're going to walk you through it and we'll call out connections from previous readings that we've done as we go through to and that's the the joy of a podcast like this.
18:42 --> 18:45 [SPEAKER_04]: We can really get into those connections without it feeling overwhelming.
18:47 --> 18:48 [SPEAKER_04]: I need to talk about Hoyt here.
18:49 --> 18:53 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, let's talk about in my opinion top three character in the
19:00 --> 19:06 [SPEAKER_02]: He's a wanderer, we don't know too much about him, really, despite him being in so many of Brandon's books.
19:08 --> 19:13 [SPEAKER_02]: We can't really tell you anything to detail about him, but he appears a lot.
19:14 --> 19:23 [SPEAKER_02]: And I think the main way he describes Hoid is he has hawkish features, so just keep a look out for anyone with hawkish features.
19:24 --> 19:50 [SPEAKER_04]: uh... as we go on this massive journey together well i propose we call this white watch you know where we are wherever we are let's find hoid let's figure out where he is uh... i'd like to be a really fun way to go through it and again we can't tell you who he is what he does why he's there in all these books but uh... we'll get through that together and i think you should keep your eyes out for somebody named hoid that's a fun way to go through the cosmic for the first time
19:51 --> 19:51 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
19:51 --> 19:54 [SPEAKER_03]: We're already giving the listeners a little wears Waldo to play along with us.
19:55 --> 19:55 [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.
19:55 --> 19:58 [SPEAKER_02]: I was going to say he's our podcast Waldo.
19:58 --> 19:59 [SPEAKER_04]: That's right.
19:59 --> 20:03 [SPEAKER_04]: He's Waldo if he was chaos incarnate.
20:05 --> 20:06 [SPEAKER_04]: That's a great way to put it.
20:08 --> 20:09 [SPEAKER_04]: So why tie them together?
20:10 --> 20:12 [SPEAKER_04]: Why do this interconnected series?
20:12 --> 20:14 [SPEAKER_04]: I was going through some words of Brandon.
20:14 --> 20:17 [SPEAKER_04]: There's an archive that's held on one of these websites.
20:18 --> 20:24 [SPEAKER_04]: And I pulled this answer from an interview that Brandon gave, and I wanted to do that here.
20:25 --> 20:29 [SPEAKER_01]: from the very beginning to already know like Cosmere was that like your goal first setting out.
20:29 --> 20:36 [SPEAKER_01]: It was it was my goal very early on and in fact before I wrote me books I wrote a short story about Lloyd.
20:36 --> 20:41 [SPEAKER_01]: And so so he goes back to before the very first book that I wrote.
20:43 --> 20:46 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, so yeah, it goes back pretty far.
20:47 --> 20:56 [SPEAKER_01]: I can trace inspirations to asm of tying foundation and robots together and fit feeling that was really cool and wanting to do something like that if it makes sense.
20:57 --> 20:57 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
20:57 --> 21:04 [SPEAKER_01]: And so I would say that's probably like the first seed was when I read the later foundation books and they tied them together.
21:04 --> 21:05 [SPEAKER_01]: Awesome.
21:06 --> 21:10 [SPEAKER_04]: Well, that is a word of Brennan brought to you from the 2015 Firefight San Francisco signing.
21:10 --> 21:14 [SPEAKER_04]: He did, you know, I never put together.
21:15 --> 21:17 [SPEAKER_04]: Brandon Sanderson and Azamov.
21:17 --> 21:26 [SPEAKER_03]: Aaron, did you know I really did not put that together before I had just heard this and I think it makes a lot of sense the way that Sanderson writes his books.
21:27 --> 21:39 [SPEAKER_03]: It's been a long time since I've dug myself into the foundation and probe hot series and I would never care to really do so again but no I definitely see that inspiration in Brandon's work.
21:41 --> 21:42 [SPEAKER_03]: I do too now that I'm thinking about it.
21:42 --> 21:44 [SPEAKER_04]: Richard, are you familiar with
21:46 --> 22:05 [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not familiar with like, I haven't read them, but I'm aware of them, like I know some of the basics did influence sonnyder a lot, I don't know if you've ever read that, but it's got some similar beats, so I understand a very basic level of asmath.
22:06 --> 22:13 [SPEAKER_03]: I've told Richard a few times to skip over the books and just head straight over to the Apple adaptation of foundation if he wants to dip his tail into it.
22:14 --> 22:15 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that's the way to bear.
22:16 --> 22:17 [SPEAKER_04]: That's really to bear.
22:18 --> 22:18 [SPEAKER_04]: Oh.
22:18 --> 22:31 [SPEAKER_04]: They're very different these, but the Apple show is great, and it's going to be in good company because we have an adaptation coming of the Cosmere, specifically the Missborn novels as movies and the Stormlight Archive novels as a TV show.
22:32 --> 22:33 [SPEAKER_04]: It's going to be really exciting.
22:33 --> 22:36 [SPEAKER_04]: I think that's a large part of the reason why we're doing this podcast right now.
22:36 --> 22:42 [SPEAKER_04]: You know, we want to get ahead of that and really prep our listeners for the upcoming adaptations.
22:42 --> 22:44 [SPEAKER_04]: If you make them feel like they have a background in these worlds.
22:55 --> 23:00 [SPEAKER_04]: So if our listeners want to get in contact with us, where can they do that, Richard?
23:01 --> 23:15 [SPEAKER_02]: If you guys want to get in touch with us, you could send us emails at Cosmere at TheLoreHounds.com or head to TheLoreHounds Discord server linked in the show notes to get into some real time conversation with us and other listeners.
23:15 --> 23:21 [SPEAKER_02]: We also have a free book club on Fable, but we'll give you guys some more info on that later after the break.
23:23 --> 23:29 [SPEAKER_04]: All right, we've taken our break and we're back to talk up more about the Cosmere and Brandon Sanders in generally.
23:29 --> 23:32 [SPEAKER_04]: I want to talk about people's background on this.
23:32 --> 23:36 [SPEAKER_04]: Richard, what's your background on Brandon Sanders saying his Cosmere works, et cetera?
23:37 --> 23:41 [SPEAKER_02]: as far as the books go, I've pretty much read everything.
23:41 --> 23:42 [SPEAKER_02]: I haven't read it.
23:42 --> 23:56 [SPEAKER_02]: You me in the nightmare painter, Elantris, or the the side story for Elantris, the Emperor's Soul, and then I haven't read White Sand, but everything else, I'm pretty like I'm up to date on it.
23:56 --> 24:00 [SPEAKER_02]: I started back about two years ago.
24:00 --> 24:07 [SPEAKER_02]: Now, with Stormly and what, I've been enjoying it ever since, I can't recommend this series enough, honestly.
24:07 --> 24:13 [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I'm glad to have another fellow big fan with me.
24:15 --> 24:17 [SPEAKER_04]: We have similar trajectories.
24:17 --> 24:19 [SPEAKER_03]: Eric, what's your background?
24:19 --> 24:20 [SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
24:20 --> 24:21 [SPEAKER_03]: I really feel like a newcomer now.
24:21 --> 24:26 [SPEAKER_03]: So I didn't read Mistborn until May of 2025.
24:26 --> 24:30 [SPEAKER_03]: So this past May, if you're listening right along with us.
24:31 --> 24:38 [SPEAKER_03]: And then I got through all of Mistborn and the first three Stormlight books in about.
24:39 --> 24:40 [SPEAKER_03]: two and a half three months.
24:40 --> 24:41 [SPEAKER_03]: I really tore through them.
24:42 --> 24:48 [SPEAKER_03]: I've been on a little bit of a slower path now, but I've gotten through Mistborn Era 1, Stormlight 1 through 3, Warbreaker.
24:49 --> 24:53 [SPEAKER_03]: All of our Canemun bound, I think, and now I am in progress with rhythm of war.
24:54 --> 24:58 [SPEAKER_03]: These books, they just really drew me in, especially starting with Mistborn.
24:58 --> 25:01 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm glad that we're starting here with the podcast because
25:02 --> 25:10 [SPEAKER_03]: just the in-depth lore and history of the Cosmere universe is what hooked me, and I think you get a sense of that with Mistborn.
25:10 --> 25:16 [SPEAKER_03]: You get those magical moments where you realize this world is bigger than I thought it was going to be.
25:16 --> 25:19 [SPEAKER_03]: There's so much more going on here than meets the eye.
25:19 --> 25:22 [SPEAKER_03]: So, yeah, just pure magic for me.
25:22 --> 25:25 [SPEAKER_03]: It really reignited my love for reading fantasy.
25:26 --> 25:39 [SPEAKER_04]: I, to glad that you say that about, you know, giving hints of a greater world more than you think of, because what I think is so special about Ms. Porto, the first novel is that it does give you those hints, but only hints.
25:39 --> 25:47 [SPEAKER_04]: And it does not force the huge world building on you right away, whereas I think starting with Stormlight Archive can maybe feel a little bit more daunting.
25:47 --> 25:51 [SPEAKER_04]: So we're going to lead you to that wonderful place.
25:51 --> 25:54 [SPEAKER_04]: Like, Stormlight Archive is wonderful, but we're going to lead you there a little bit.
25:54 --> 25:59 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I would like to say, I regret starting with Stormlight.
25:59 --> 26:02 [SPEAKER_02]: It was very ex-position heavy for the first book.
26:03 --> 26:06 [SPEAKER_02]: I think the first book somewhere around 1100 or 1200 pages.
26:07 --> 26:17 [SPEAKER_02]: And I was not audio books, so like, that's like 20 hours of just ex-position, which was great, but it is very heavy.
26:20 --> 26:24 [SPEAKER_02]: versus misborn, I mean, that's, I think misborn's like 700 pages.
26:24 --> 26:26 [SPEAKER_02]: So it's definitely a different,
26:28 --> 26:45 [SPEAKER_03]: a different way to start I guess it is I don't know how you two started with stormlight archives that would have turned me off of the of the series completely if I hadn't started with missborne well you can just blame Richard on that because I didn't actually I started with missborne back in 2020 I read through all of those read through a
26:50 --> 26:54 [SPEAKER_04]: a long dress, sorry, I don't mean to offend the pronunciation hawks over here.
26:55 --> 27:08 [SPEAKER_04]: I read Tress, you know, I'm bunch of other stuff, but I didn't really start from Ledarchite for a long time, I kept trying to start it, and I was like, I can tell I'm gonna like this, but it's such a commitment, and I just can't commit to it right now.
27:09 --> 27:18 [SPEAKER_04]: I liked Brandon's Anderson through all that time, I really did like him, but I liked him more for what he was trying to do with the Cosmere than I liked his stories.
27:19 --> 27:26 [SPEAKER_04]: It was not until Stormlight Archive where I just became an absolute fan like I felt myself getting giddy about it.
27:27 --> 27:38 [SPEAKER_04]: And that was such a fun experience to kind of turn around and start to really feel that enthusiasm that I've always loved to see in the Sanderson community but I wasn't always part of.
27:38 --> 27:42 [SPEAKER_04]: And now I am like the biggest Sanderson that you can find.
27:43 --> 27:53 [SPEAKER_04]: And I've now, I've wanted to go back and read the misfortune novels and read all the other stories with the Stormlight Archive in mind and with this enthusiasm that I have now.
27:53 --> 27:55 [SPEAKER_04]: And so I'm so glad that we're doing this podcast.
27:56 --> 27:57 [SPEAKER_04]: We have different perspectives.
27:58 --> 28:01 [SPEAKER_04]: Aaron, you're the new ways to it, although you've read a lot of it already.
28:02 --> 28:05 [SPEAKER_04]: Richard and I both have sort of, I think different blind spots.
28:05 --> 28:09 [SPEAKER_04]: And I think we're going to be making up for those for each other as we go through.
28:09 --> 28:14 [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it's always interesting to hear what other people have to say about this stuff, especially with the deep themes it has.
28:15 --> 28:20 [SPEAKER_04]: But the fact that we all have different approaches to it, I think will be really fascinating to hear.
28:22 --> 28:43 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, another thing I'll say is like my friend who got me and Aaron into this Dante He and I have talked a lot about the cosmic and about pretty much every book I've read from it So like I kind of have some of his input that I might add in or Things that he made me think of just by us talking about it.
28:43 --> 28:50 [SPEAKER_02]: So like I feel like we have a pretty good We're very well-rounded is what I'm trying to say I guess
28:51 --> 28:52 [SPEAKER_04]: very cool.
28:53 --> 28:55 [SPEAKER_04]: So I want to talk about what we're going to do next.
28:55 --> 29:00 [SPEAKER_04]: So this is going to be a shorter episode because we're just giving you this overview of the podcast and the Cosmere.
29:00 --> 29:06 [SPEAKER_04]: But normally we're going to have a little bit longer episode where we actually covered the book and we're going to read something and talk it over.
29:06 --> 29:09 [SPEAKER_04]: So we're going to keep this in a manageable size.
29:10 --> 29:12 [SPEAKER_04]: We're going to keep it to about 50 to 70 pages a week.
29:13 --> 29:22 [SPEAKER_04]: You know about five chapters a week normally and we'll let you know the book's full schedule each book's full schedule when we start a new book That way you can look ahead if you got a vacation plan.
29:22 --> 29:23 [SPEAKER_04]: You want to take a break.
29:23 --> 29:29 [SPEAKER_04]: You want to speed up slow down whatever you want We're also going to have a Fable free book club
29:30 --> 29:33 [SPEAKER_04]: Fable is a free app where you can download it connect to other people.
29:33 --> 29:41 [SPEAKER_04]: It's kind of like goodreads if you use that but there's a way to Schedule book readings and schedule portions of readings.
29:41 --> 29:53 [SPEAKER_04]: So I've already set it up It's gonna be linked in the show notes and you can just pick that right up sign up and it'll let you track where you are with us So you can do that for free or you could just ignore it and listen to the podcast whatever you want
29:54 --> 30:10 [SPEAKER_04]: This is going to take us until basically 20 30 to finish at this current pace and if Brandon wrote no more books, which we know he's going to So yeah, you know, we'll we'll see this this pace is it's a healthy pace, but it's going to be a long ride, and I'm excited to do it with you too
30:12 --> 30:13 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm excited too.
30:13 --> 30:14 [SPEAKER_03]: I think we've got this.
30:15 --> 30:21 [SPEAKER_03]: I think by the time we get through all of Brandon's works, we'll have 40 more to cover.
30:21 --> 30:25 [SPEAKER_03]: So this is, we've got this going in perpetuity for sure.
30:26 --> 30:34 [SPEAKER_02]: And we'll also have, I mean, by the time we get done covering all of those new works, then the shows will be out and we'll have even more to cover.
30:34 --> 30:37 [SPEAKER_02]: So we are sticking around for you guys.
30:38 --> 30:44 [SPEAKER_04]: So if you want to keep us, you know, able to support this work, you can support us.
30:44 --> 30:49 [SPEAKER_04]: There's going to be a link in the show notes, a link tree that will lead you to a Patreon page.
30:49 --> 30:51 [SPEAKER_04]: If you want to support us, it's not just support.
30:51 --> 30:53 [SPEAKER_04]: You will get bonus episodes.
30:53 --> 31:01 [SPEAKER_04]: We're going to do our monthly bonus episodes on spoilers, and from time to time, we're also going to do interviews with other people to talk about some deeper themes of a Cosmere.
31:01 --> 31:05 [SPEAKER_04]: We've talked about doing some other bonus content too, but I don't want to over-promise an under-deliver here.
31:06 --> 31:09 [SPEAKER_04]: So, and also we're going to be doing an early bird special.
31:09 --> 31:19 [SPEAKER_04]: So, if you're one of the first certain amount of subscribers, we'll decide that by the time that we launch us, you will get a $3 month subscription instead of a $5 month subscription.
31:20 --> 31:21 [SPEAKER_04]: So, wonderful deal.
31:22 --> 31:25 [SPEAKER_04]: It is, that's a good deal for this amount of content.
31:25 --> 31:29 [SPEAKER_04]: I see all these patreon with like, you know, $10 a month for your little bonus content.
31:29 --> 31:32 [SPEAKER_04]: Now, you're coming in nice and cheap.
31:33 --> 31:34 [SPEAKER_04]: Enough salesmanship, though.
31:35 --> 31:37 [SPEAKER_04]: We need to talk about our first book, Aaron.
31:37 --> 31:38 [SPEAKER_04]: What's our first book going to be?
31:39 --> 31:45 [SPEAKER_03]: We're going to be starting off with the first book of the Mistborn First Era, which is the final empire.
31:45 --> 31:50 [SPEAKER_03]: We're going to be diving right into this because it's Brandon's recommended starter series.
31:50 --> 31:53 [SPEAKER_03]: It's also the one that I started with, and I think it's a great starting point.
31:54 --> 32:02 [SPEAKER_03]: There are multiple eras in the Mistborn series, and we're just starting with the first three books covering the first era of Mistborn.
32:02 --> 32:03 [SPEAKER_03]: This is a standalone arc.
32:04 --> 32:09 [SPEAKER_03]: this story and the era two arc are not super connected.
32:09 --> 32:10 [SPEAKER_03]: They're independent.
32:10 --> 32:14 [SPEAKER_03]: There's a lot of crossover, but you can join us for just this.
32:14 --> 32:25 [SPEAKER_03]: If you're dipping your toes in and then we will be discussing the prologue of that during our first episode and then the following week, we will be doing chapters one through five.
32:25 --> 32:31 [SPEAKER_03]: So we are starting off strong and we have a good chunk of chapters there.
32:33 --> 32:33 [SPEAKER_04]: very cool.
32:34 --> 32:45 [SPEAKER_04]: So you'll see all the links of the show notes you need to get the reading schedule to get the fable book club to get the discord or to support the patreon and get some bonus content.
32:46 --> 32:52 [SPEAKER_04]: In the meantime, I think we're going to call it a day on our short intro episode.
32:53 --> 32:55 [SPEAKER_04]: But let me ask you something.
32:55 --> 32:56 [SPEAKER_04]: I want to ask you all.
