[00:04:22] This is a...

[00:04:23] I think we talked about this a little bit on the last podcast we dropped

[00:04:30] and nine and 10 really are a pair.

[00:04:33] They're great.

[00:04:34] I watched them back to back.

[00:04:36] And what a just great way to end an amazing season.

[00:04:40] The show had so much work to do in terms of bringing old fans along

[00:04:49] and satisfying, itching certain scratches.

[00:04:53] Scratching certain itches?

[00:04:54] Maybe I'll say it that way.

[00:04:55] Don't itch me.

[00:04:56] You can pick your nose and you can pick your friends.

[00:04:59] And then you have to get new people on board

[00:05:04] because new people are like, hey, what's this show?

[00:05:07] And then you have to introduce us into a similar world

[00:05:11] but it's its own world because there's a lot of things differently.

[00:05:15] And then you've got to hype us for season two.

[00:05:18] And this built a lot of drama.

[00:05:22] It capitalized on a lot of the tensions

[00:05:24] that had been building up all season long

[00:05:27] and then just really delivered a couple of big punches.

[00:05:31] And yeah, I was pretty psyched.

[00:05:33] I'm glad we did this rewatch right up into season two

[00:05:37] because now if I'd done the rewatch earlier,

[00:05:40] I would have been like, oh, it's too long in between times.

[00:05:43] So I think it worked out perfectly.

[00:05:45] I'm really glad that we're going to have it fresh in our memory

[00:05:48] for season two

[00:05:49] because I could not imagine not remembering these plotlines.

[00:05:53] And there's a lot to forget.

[00:05:54] I mean, we even talked earlier in the season,

[00:05:56] you had forgotten about Raniera

[00:05:59] considering, really seriously considering Otto's offer.

[00:06:02] And that's something that I think is important

[00:06:04] for her characterization going into season two.

[00:06:06] Like she feels forced into this war.

[00:06:08] Mm-hmm.

[00:06:09] And that's something that I hope they'll continue to explore

[00:06:13] as they go through with a bunch of stuff

[00:06:17] that I can't talk about.

[00:06:18] -—- laughter ——

[00:06:20] Mildly interesting, as they used to say.

[00:06:22] Mildly interesting.

[00:06:23] We need our own thing, though.

[00:06:24] We do need our own thing.

[00:06:25] And what you were saying, though, too,

[00:06:27] about Raniera being forced into this war,

[00:06:30] the having her son completely torn to shreds.

[00:06:36] She did, as they say.

[00:06:37] What did they say?

[00:06:39] He did.

[00:06:40] He did, yes.

[00:06:41] They heeded him.

[00:06:42] Heeded him.

[00:06:43] Whatever.

[00:06:44] Anyway, that is going to have such an impact on her.

[00:06:48] And it's going to be such a deep wound for her.

[00:06:51] And the issue of holding and restraining

[00:06:55] and fighting a just war and a just action

[00:07:00] and doing the things that are necessary to protect yourself

[00:07:04] and to do it without going overboard

[00:07:07] and committing a lot of extreme acts of violence,

[00:07:11] and especially that affect people who are not involved.

[00:07:14] That's a really difficult thing.

[00:07:16] And there's a lot of—as we've seen,

[00:07:19] with Damon, he was like, let's go.

[00:07:21] Let's mount up.

[00:07:22] And I mean, he's so amped up that he actually

[00:07:26] committed a pretty bad act of domestic violence against her

[00:07:29] because he's just so enraged at this point.

[00:07:32] Right.

[00:07:33] It came out in that moment.

[00:07:36] And for anyone to restrain themselves

[00:07:39] in this situation is really tough.

[00:07:41] And so I think that dramatic tension is well laid.

[00:07:45] They really laid the tracks perfectly.

[00:07:47] Damon Targaryen misplacing anger.

[00:07:49] I mean, who's heard of such a thing?

[00:07:52] Madness.

[00:07:53] All right, David, I'm hyped for season two.

[00:07:56] I want to get right into this episode.

[00:07:58] Let's go for it.

[00:07:59] The king is dead.

[00:08:01] Alicent and Otto conspire with the Green Council

[00:08:05] to crown Aegon.

[00:08:07] Alicent's indignation at what?

[00:08:10] You've been plotting and planning all of this

[00:08:12] in secret all along?

[00:08:13] He's like, I'm not going to do this.

[00:08:15] You've been plotting this in secret all along?

[00:08:17] How dare you?

[00:08:19] And it's like, girl, please.

[00:08:22] Look around the room.

[00:08:23] Read the room.

[00:08:25] Also, she's completely disingenuous

[00:08:28] because she talks to Aegon in an earlier episode

[00:08:31] where she's like, you're going to be king one day.

[00:08:33] And yeah, like she knew what was going on.

[00:08:37] I do really enjoy when she, and I

[00:08:39] mentioned this in our forthcoming podcast

[00:08:41] with Maester Anthony, I really like when she goes, well,

[00:08:45] he wanted Aegon to be king.

[00:08:47] And Otto goes, really?

[00:08:48] Like he's just lost all the wind in his body.

[00:08:51] He's like, he just loves it.

[00:08:54] The guy is so happy.

[00:08:56] Gleeful isn't a word that describes

[00:09:01] what he was feeling in that moment.

[00:09:03] It was like maybe when Larys sees a pair of toes.

[00:09:09] Sorry.

[00:09:11] And of course we get the first, that's all right.

[00:09:14] We're here.

[00:09:14] It's Game of Thrones.

[00:09:15] It's all Game of Thrones.

[00:09:16] It's great.

[00:09:17] You know, we have the first blood in the Dance of the Dragons.

[00:09:21] Yeah, from an unexpected source within the Green Council.

[00:09:25] Kristen Cole, of course, does a little bit aggressive shove.

[00:09:31] He does a little misjudgment of his own strength and you know,

[00:09:35] Sir Lionel Beesbury, not Lionel.

[00:09:37] No Lyman, Lyman, Lyman.

[00:09:39] Okay.

[00:09:40] The whole little orb in discs, I don't know if they have official

[00:09:46] names, but your little check-in thing.

[00:09:49] All along we're like, what?

[00:09:52] You know, do these have any purpose or whatever?

[00:09:53] It's like, oh, well, there you go.

[00:09:55] There's some functional aspect to this thing.

[00:09:58] That was the purpose was so that Kristen Cole can go shove

[00:10:00] your face into it and kill you.

[00:10:02] Man, what a way to go.

[00:10:04] That's rough.

[00:10:05] Yeah, I did.

[00:10:07] It did really up the stakes.

[00:10:08] It did really up the stakes.

[00:10:10] So when Otto is like, no, don't move the body.

[00:10:14] Nobody leaves this room until this is decided.

[00:10:17] Yeah, got to lock it down.

[00:10:19] But then that was fantastic.

[00:10:20] Lord Commander Westerling is like, I'm not having this.

[00:10:25] Yeah, and you could see Kristen's like, do I attack him?

[00:10:30] But I think Kristen was afraid.

[00:10:32] He was like, I don't think I have the skill to beat this guy.

[00:10:35] You've got to be a pretty badass to be Lord Commander, right?

[00:10:39] Look at that beard.

[00:10:40] I mean, come on.

[00:10:41] What was it?

[00:10:41] You have to share your idea that you had today.

[00:10:44] You have to talk just briefly.

[00:10:46] He's on Cameo, that actor.

[00:10:48] And I was like, what if we hired this guy to be like,

[00:10:51] welcome to the Lorehounds podcast, you know what I mean?

[00:10:54] Like just do it opening one.

[00:10:56] Then we looked into it.

[00:10:56] It was like five grand and we were like, okay, no, no thanks.

[00:10:59] That's five grand for a commercial one, right?

[00:11:01] Like a personal one was more affordable.

[00:11:04] But if you were going to use it for commercial purposes,

[00:11:06] they have a different rate.

[00:11:07] So, oh, and by the way, that's for a 15 day license.

[00:11:12] So that'll get us to podcasts, right?

[00:11:14] We're not that big.

[00:11:15] We're not that.

[00:11:17] But anyway, that was my fun idea that I think it's great

[00:11:20] that that was eaten as quickly as Luceris.

[00:11:25] Anyway, yeah, I love the splintering factions here.

[00:11:29] Beesbury is the only one to speak up in this meeting.

[00:11:32] And then Westerling is like, I think his tipping point

[00:11:35] is being asked to go kill Rhaenyra.

[00:11:39] Right.

[00:11:40] You know, somebody who he's been sworn to hip protect

[00:11:42] his whole life.

[00:11:43] Right.

[00:11:44] And then suddenly, you know, yeah.

[00:11:46] Yeah, it's kind of gross, right?

[00:11:48] It's kind of gross.

[00:11:50] The hypocrisy is a little bit hard to stomach.

[00:11:53] And I think it's not just the fact that he's being asked

[00:11:56] that, but that is very cavalier.

[00:11:57] It's like, well, Lord Westerling, Lord Commander Westerling,

[00:12:01] go to Dragonstone and take care of business.

[00:12:03] You know what I mean?

[00:12:03] It's just very cavalier.

[00:12:05] I mean, Otto has no qualms, not a single qualm.

[00:12:08] No, right.

[00:12:09] There's no, there's no, oh my soul and what do we do

[00:12:13] and how do we protect ourselves?

[00:12:15] And it's just straight up like, okay, execute order 66

[00:12:19] and, you know, wipe him out.

[00:12:21] He is a little Palpatini, isn't he?

[00:12:23] Mmm, just a little bit.

[00:12:25] It was a bitsy, bitsy, teeny weeny, yellow poker Palpatini.

[00:12:29] Okay.

[00:12:30] All right.

[00:12:31] I'm going somewhere.

[00:12:32] That song, the real one, was in Doctor Who this week.

[00:12:35] So it's been in my head all week.

[00:12:36] You told me I should watch the latest Doctor Who.

[00:12:38] Oh, it's so good.

[00:12:39] It's like AI and classism and racism all mixed in one allegory.

[00:12:46] It's really good.

[00:12:47] It's really good.

[00:12:47] It's very Black Mirror, people are saying.

[00:12:51] Relative to when we're recording,

[00:12:52] I've got a couple of other television shows that I need

[00:12:54] to watch tonight.

[00:12:55] So I'll see if I can fit it in later this week.

[00:12:58] We'll see.

[00:12:58] We'll see.

[00:12:59] They're a lot of fun.

[00:13:01] All right, so let's move on to Aegon.

[00:13:03] He's missing and Alicent and Otto send out competing teams

[00:13:06] in the amazing race to find him.

[00:13:09] He's found in the captivity of Missaria, but not before

[00:13:12] the Cargill twins discover the bastard fighting pits.

[00:13:16] Eamon and Kristen are ultimately successful in securing

[00:13:19] Aegon for the Queen.

[00:13:22] This was a wacky and weird and fun and kind of pathetic

[00:13:30] in the sense of both Eamon and Aegon trying to deal with

[00:13:33] their positioning and Eamon feeling so second son and sort

[00:13:41] of lack of agency second son way.

[00:13:45] Right, and I think Eamon feels and is probably right that

[00:13:49] he would be a more competent king than his brother.

[00:13:52] Way more.

[00:13:53] And not nearly a psychopath.

[00:13:56] Not that he'd be a nice person, a kind king, but he'd be

[00:13:59] a competent king and what he was trying to do.

[00:14:02] Right?

[00:14:03] He'd actually think rationally through problems, even though

[00:14:07] he might be a little bit aggressive about things.

[00:14:11] He's not a complete degenerate like Eamon.

[00:14:15] Right.

[00:14:15] I'm sorry Aegon.

[00:14:16] Yeah.

[00:14:16] Yeah.

[00:14:16] Yeah.

[00:14:17] Yeah.

[00:14:17] Aegon.

[00:14:18] He's a what's the word I'm looking for sociopathic.

[00:14:22] Yes, but there's a less negative word that I'm looking

[00:14:25] for.

[00:14:25] He's hedonistic, right?

[00:14:27] He's really obsessed with what feels good in this moment.

[00:14:33] Yeah, and he doesn't have a value or moral center above

[00:14:39] and beyond himself.

[00:14:41] And he doesn't have like one second of foresight.

[00:14:45] Right, right.

[00:14:45] It's in the moment.

[00:14:46] He never thinks about what's coming next.

[00:14:48] Right, right.

[00:14:50] I think we'll see if that plays into what's going on, you

[00:14:53] know, as this dance goes on.

[00:14:56] And the whole fighting pit thing is a real dark turn.

[00:15:00] Like that's like really gross.

[00:15:02] That's even more than Joffrey.

[00:15:05] I mean, Joffrey was pretty horrific.

[00:15:08] He didn't have kids fight each other though.

[00:15:09] He didn't have kids fight each other.

[00:15:10] He didn't do that.

[00:15:11] He might have shot some people with a crossbow.

[00:15:13] And as far as we know, he was not a rapist.

[00:15:16] Right.

[00:15:17] Yeah, as far as we know.

[00:15:18] As far as we know.

[00:15:19] But that's all, you know, we can only go on what we are

[00:15:22] shown on screen.

[00:15:23] Right.

[00:15:24] Or told about.

[00:15:25] So what do you think about the Eric and Eric of it all?

[00:15:28] This is when we really get these guys.

[00:15:30] You know, Maester Anthony said the other night when we

[00:15:32] talked, I know things that I can't say mildly interesting.

[00:15:37] I love these two characters.

[00:15:39] I think it's a really fascinating plot line and I can't

[00:15:41] wait to see where it goes.

[00:15:42] I don't get the, I don't know.

[00:15:48] Yeah, there's, it's not that I don't get something.

[00:15:51] It's that I'm like, okay, tell me more.

[00:15:52] Like you're clearly setting something up here.

[00:15:55] Why make these twin thing happen?

[00:15:57] Like why make this, this thing?

[00:15:59] And even to the point of, oh, I'm Eric, not Eric, sir.

[00:16:02] Like he says at one point there's a misidentification

[00:16:05] earlier on in the season and you're like, so what?

[00:16:07] So they're making something of.

[00:16:09] Yeah, it matters.

[00:16:10] These brothers.

[00:16:10] It matters.

[00:16:11] Yeah.

[00:16:11] You gotta know.

[00:16:12] You gotta remember which is which.

[00:16:14] And I thought I had them, but then Eric, I thought Eric

[00:16:18] was more brunette and Eric with an E was a little bit

[00:16:23] more blonde, but then they made it really hard to distinguish

[00:16:26] them.

[00:16:26] They love it.

[00:16:26] I think they're just supposed to be identical.

[00:16:28] Just Eric is team black and Eric is team green.

[00:16:33] Which and I can't believe that Eric is going for team

[00:16:35] green.

[00:16:36] Like you saw the same stuff, dude.

[00:16:38] And that's interesting that they split and then he sits,

[00:16:42] Eric sits there and watches his brother fighting with, with

[00:16:48] Amon's, right?

[00:16:49] No, it was Kristen Cole.

[00:16:50] Sorry with Kristen Cole and he doesn't help his brother.

[00:16:54] Mm-hmm.

[00:16:55] Agree.

[00:16:56] So I don't know what's up with that.

[00:16:58] Like you're like, hmm, dude, what are you doing?

[00:17:00] So yeah, Eric is Eric has had enough.

[00:17:03] I think after Eric sees the fighting pit is when he makes

[00:17:05] his final decision of I can't possibly support this claimant.

[00:17:10] But he goes with green though, Eric.

[00:17:13] I'm talking about Eric.

[00:17:14] Yeah, Eric with an E.

[00:17:16] Yeah, right.

[00:17:17] No, no, Eric has got something.

[00:17:18] He's got a he's like, oh, this is gross.

[00:17:20] I can't support this.

[00:17:21] Yeah, right.

[00:17:23] So yeah, I don't know why Eric didn't help Eric when they

[00:17:26] were fighting.

[00:17:27] Yeah.

[00:17:27] Did you enjoy Miss Aria's development?

[00:17:29] She's no longer just a an owner of a brothel, but she is

[00:17:34] now a spy master.

[00:17:36] Yeah, I I like it.

[00:17:39] I want to see more of it and I want to see her get her

[00:17:43] revenge on auto for bringing her place of business down.

[00:17:47] But I thought it was a really that's a Laris move.

[00:17:49] If I'm going to go.

[00:17:50] Yeah, you might be right.

[00:17:51] Yeah, you know, that's that's a Laris me.

[00:17:52] That's his signature move man.

[00:17:54] You got to remember that you are correct.

[00:17:56] That's right.

[00:17:57] But you know, it's very good at arson.

[00:17:59] Yeah.

[00:17:59] Yeah, but I love the fact that they stashed him in underneath

[00:18:04] the central or the central candle altar thing for the seven

[00:18:10] there like that was pretty yeah, that was pretty cool.

[00:18:13] It was pretty cheeky.

[00:18:14] And yeah, I love emo kid.

[00:18:16] Agon.

[00:18:17] It's pretty funny and I love you know, they just had the

[00:18:19] premiere a couple days ago or maybe it was last night and

[00:18:23] you can see all the pictures of the two actors for a gun and

[00:18:26] Raniera together and you're like, oh family photo.

[00:18:33] But yeah, it's it's a I thought it was a really effective

[00:18:35] chasing.

[00:18:36] It really ramped up the tension in a fun way, which you didn't

[00:18:38] expect that to happen.

[00:18:41] Right?

[00:18:42] You know, you didn't expect that to happen in an episode all

[00:18:44] about the aftermath of a king's death that opens up with a

[00:18:47] murder in the Green Council and it it adds a lot of dramatic

[00:18:52] tension who's going to get to him first and then when they

[00:18:55] do get to him what's going to happen after that?

[00:18:56] So yeah, it was it was fun.

[00:18:58] It was a fun way to see the city and do some stuff around

[00:19:00] the city a little bit.

[00:19:02] So yeah, so it's interesting to that Otto and Allison to both

[00:19:08] want him before the other.

[00:19:10] Mm-hmm.

[00:19:11] And this is a big source of conflict huge huge.

[00:19:17] Is it just that Otto wants Raniera dead and Allison doesn't

[00:19:22] or is there something bigger here?

[00:19:24] I think the way I read it in while watching it was that

[00:19:28] Allison is trying to moderate the whole thing so that it

[00:19:33] doesn't spiral.

[00:19:34] She's trying to keep it from spiraling too far out of

[00:19:36] control.

[00:19:37] Mm-hmm.

[00:19:37] And she knows that her father's inclination is to strike

[00:19:44] and wipe out the enemy as quickly as possible, but she doesn't

[00:19:48] want that.

[00:19:48] She's trying to find some sort of middle ground some sort

[00:19:53] of, you know, peaceful resolution.

[00:19:54] Look just go to exile and right now it's your claim and

[00:19:58] you can keep your life and everybody will be fine.

[00:20:00] Where is she?

[00:20:00] Yeah, I she thinks that Otto was just going to you know,

[00:20:04] take everybody out.

[00:20:04] Right, right.

[00:20:06] And whoever can get that whisper into the ear of the king

[00:20:09] to come like that's you know, whoever listened whoever is

[00:20:14] the last person to talk to him.

[00:20:15] They think they think they have them under control, right?

[00:20:18] Mm-hmm.

[00:20:19] So and I also think that you know, Allison is constantly

[00:20:23] cleaning up after the messes left by the men around her.

[00:20:26] Mm-hmm.

[00:20:27] Yeah, very good point.

[00:20:28] The Saris and now Amund is starting the war later in well

[00:20:33] in the second episode because he's just being careless and

[00:20:38] a jock and rude and crude and just bullying to the extent

[00:20:43] where he loses control of his own instruments.

[00:20:45] Mm-hmm.

[00:20:46] Mm-hmm.

[00:20:48] So yeah, I mean she's she's constantly picking up the pieces

[00:20:51] for people and so she feels like I have to be close to a

[00:20:55] gone if I'm going to get this piece together, right?

[00:20:59] Right.

[00:21:00] And that's what it highlights even more what Raney says to

[00:21:03] her just like girl.

[00:21:05] You should just be king Queen like forget these dudes, you

[00:21:08] know, right?

[00:21:09] Just right just be just take being be Queen and end this.

[00:21:15] Yep, and I don't think it's bad advice in a way, you know,

[00:21:18] mm-hmm.

[00:21:20] So Laris has Miss Arias brothel burned down.

[00:21:25] We already talked about that.

[00:21:27] Yeah, Allison didn't a gone head to the dragon pit for the

[00:21:29] coronation where thousands of citizens of King's Landing are

[00:21:32] hoarded in to witness the coronation.

[00:21:37] So this had some fun echoes to season one in a number of

[00:21:42] places not only the shame scene, but why there were so you

[00:21:48] mean not not season one but Game of Thrones Game of Thrones.

[00:21:51] Sorry.

[00:21:52] Yeah, my apologies.

[00:21:52] Yeah.

[00:21:53] And so yeah, I had some vibe there was some other thing from

[00:21:58] Game of Thrones wasn't there where there was some crowd

[00:22:00] stuff going on in the town and there's a couple times.

[00:22:03] Yeah, there's been a few times.

[00:22:05] I think you know, whenever you have everybody gathered in one

[00:22:08] place.

[00:22:08] I think of the burning of the Great Sept by say by Cersei with

[00:22:13] wildfire.

[00:22:14] Yep, which by the way has the best music ever in Game of

[00:22:17] Thrones.

[00:22:18] Mm-hmm.

[00:22:19] It's been a while since I've watched it.

[00:22:20] So I can't remember off the top of my head.

[00:22:22] That's where they use piano for the first time in the whole

[00:22:24] series.

[00:22:25] Very cool.

[00:22:26] It's really it's really really beautiful.

[00:22:27] I could go on about that all day.

[00:22:29] All right.

[00:22:30] But I won't because we're doing House of the Dragon now.

[00:22:34] Yeah, I think that it's a really clever setup for the doors

[00:22:38] being barred later, right?

[00:22:39] Like oh nobody's allowed out when everybody needs to get out

[00:22:42] because there's a freaking dragon around.

[00:22:46] Yeah, then there's the whole yeah.

[00:22:47] Anyway, yeah, I was really worried for Rhaenys being able

[00:22:54] to you know, get out and not get trampled or get you know

[00:22:57] clobbered by one of the the gold cloaks because she's you

[00:23:00] know, so important but that she is then able to take advantage

[00:23:06] of that when she realizes where they're being directed and

[00:23:10] she's kind of like oh hope maybe maybe maybe let me just try

[00:23:13] to survive a little longer.

[00:23:14] Maybe it just maybe I can pull this off and you know, she

[00:23:18] knows that place pretty well well enough and she's able to

[00:23:22] take advantage of it.

[00:23:23] So yeah, that was and Eric was going to you know spirit her

[00:23:28] away and obviously we know later that he's got the crown stashed

[00:23:32] in his bag that he's running around with he's all he's all team

[00:23:36] black.

[00:23:36] Yeah, he's all the way full in and and so there's a couple

[00:23:40] details I want to talk about here the the crown itself.

[00:23:43] Yeah, they chose a on the Conqueror's crown shoeing Viserys

[00:23:47] his crown which I think was also Jaharis his crown.

[00:23:50] Okay now a gun the Conqueror of course was the first king of

[00:23:54] Westeros, right?

[00:23:57] But he did rule with fire and blood right like he burned

[00:24:00] castles down to force people into submission.

[00:24:02] Okay, and Jaharis was known as the old king and the one who

[00:24:08] created peace in the realm and really solidified because

[00:24:11] Jaharis came to power right after a bunch of people died

[00:24:15] in other succession Wars like Jaharis actually was the most

[00:24:19] peaceful time in Targaryen history at this point and Viserys

[00:24:23] continued that but of course stoke the flame of everything

[00:24:26] while he was alive now a guns like well, we're going back

[00:24:30] to conquer times.

[00:24:32] No, no more peace.

[00:24:34] This is this is conflict again.

[00:24:36] That's what it symbolizes to me.

[00:24:38] I'm the tough guy.

[00:24:39] You're not going to want to mess with me.

[00:24:40] Meanwhile Rhaenyra.

[00:24:42] I think when Rhaenyra puts on the crown in episode 10 you

[00:24:46] that's where Rhaenys starts to go.

[00:24:48] Huh?

[00:24:50] She might be the one who's going to make this work.

[00:24:53] Mm-hmm.

[00:24:55] So I think the crowns matter here is what I'm saying.

[00:24:57] I think I agree with you and we'll I guess we can talk about

[00:25:01] it when we get to episode 10, but yeah, the the that that

[00:25:06] Aegon chooses that crown.

[00:25:07] Yeah, this is definitely significant and it makes his look

[00:25:13] it's it looks well on it looks good on him, you know in

[00:25:16] terms of being that kind of character.

[00:25:18] So right, it's it's cool stuff.

[00:25:22] And then the other scene I want to talk about is Allison

[00:25:26] saying you imbecile to do you love me?

[00:25:30] Oh you get like I'm so conflicted on this because you know,

[00:25:35] obviously a gone is a predator and an awful person overall

[00:25:39] and incredibly selfish but everyone wants the approval and

[00:25:45] affection of their mother, right?

[00:25:46] Like that's just something that we all crave right or a

[00:25:50] mother figure if you will and when he asks her do you love

[00:25:56] me and she responds with you imbecile.

[00:25:58] I just feel like she closed the door to the connection.

[00:26:01] He was trying to forge there.

[00:26:03] So maybe in that moment, he could have chose he might have

[00:26:05] chosen a slightly different or had some other moderating

[00:26:09] influence when the crowds started to swell his ego, right?

[00:26:15] But no, he doesn't and I mean you even see in the trailers

[00:26:18] for season 2 a mons amens like oh well our mother our mother

[00:26:24] has too much sympathy for the enemy.

[00:26:25] So she's a fool and I think that's going to start getting

[00:26:28] to a gone in a way that maybe it wouldn't as much of Allison

[00:26:32] had a real bomb with him and you remember even when he was

[00:26:34] a baby earlier in the season.

[00:26:36] She's constantly giving him to her wet nurse because she

[00:26:39] can't handle very colicky as they used to say.

[00:26:42] Yeah.

[00:26:42] Well, but also it just it doesn't seem like she knew how

[00:26:44] to soothe him ever good point.

[00:26:47] Yeah.

[00:26:48] Yeah, good point.

[00:26:48] A baby is an art that I have from a man who is who is in

[00:26:53] the prime of his skills.

[00:26:56] That's right.

[00:26:57] Yeah, it's true.

[00:26:58] She she has always had a difficult relationship with him.

[00:27:02] That's a good point.

[00:27:03] And yeah, he's trying to feel some connection with her right

[00:27:09] but as they say heavy is the head that wears a crown right

[00:27:11] and I think when both crowns get placed it changes both

[00:27:14] of these characters in fundamental ways.

[00:27:17] Yep.

[00:27:18] So I've combined all the reading stuff basically for our

[00:27:21] last bullet point on this episode.

[00:27:22] There's not really in both of these episodes.

[00:27:24] There's not a lot of plot points.

[00:27:25] It's mostly little moments.

[00:27:27] Mm-hmm.

[00:27:27] Yeah, or big moments, I guess during the coronation rainis

[00:27:32] freed from freed by Sir Eric after her talk with Allison

[00:27:36] bursts through the floor with her dragon Malice killing

[00:27:41] a number of small folk.

[00:27:42] She stopped short of killing the royal family and flies

[00:27:45] off.

[00:27:46] So we've touched on it a number of different times but this

[00:27:50] conversation that she and Allison have earlier in the

[00:27:53] episode is one of my favorite conversations of this entire

[00:27:57] season.

[00:27:58] It's just such a boiled down perfect thing between these

[00:28:02] two women who are, you know, dealing with all these different

[00:28:06] circumstances and I'm a big rainy stand and I and she's

[00:28:09] just laying it down on Allison's just saying yo, you know,

[00:28:13] you're you're so blind.

[00:28:15] You're still even serving these men and her indignity at

[00:28:20] being kept hostage is just, you know, just got a burn.

[00:28:26] It's just, you know, she's not used to that and you don't

[00:28:30] treat other Royals.

[00:28:31] So she in the way that she deducts very quickly.

[00:28:36] Oh the King's dead.

[00:28:38] I you know, I say okay now I start to see all these things

[00:28:41] that are going on.

[00:28:42] Yeah, I just love the whole culmination of the Reni's plot

[00:28:47] line in this.

[00:28:49] Yeah, the whole thing really makes sense why she ends up

[00:28:52] siding with Raniera.

[00:28:53] I think she just kind of got caught up in the injustice

[00:28:56] of it all like it was just so gross the way that they did

[00:28:59] it.

[00:29:00] Yes.

[00:29:01] Yes.

[00:29:02] I mean if they really believed in the claim then maybe they

[00:29:06] would treat with Raniera before they crowned him.

[00:29:08] But instead they chose to do everything in secret to imprison

[00:29:13] people to hang people who they couldn't trust.

[00:29:17] It's tough.

[00:29:18] I think I think maybe if the high towers go to Raniera and

[00:29:23] say like look we think there will be civil unrest if you

[00:29:27] are named if you become the Queen, you know, we don't want

[00:29:32] to go to war.

[00:29:33] We want to leave you with Dragonstone.

[00:29:34] We want to reaffirm your children as legitimate and we want

[00:29:37] to you know, give them Dragonstone and Driftmark.

[00:29:43] That's what I'm looking for your sons will have other places

[00:29:47] at court things in that I think she might listen to that.

[00:29:51] I really do think she might listen to that because she does

[00:29:53] listen when Otto comes later, right?

[00:29:57] She listens after the crowning is done.

[00:29:59] And I don't think that that's necessarily because of the

[00:30:01] crowning because she doesn't like Otto.

[00:30:03] There's nothing Otto can say that's going to convince her

[00:30:06] to trust him.

[00:30:08] Right, but I think maybe Alicent she might listen to at some

[00:30:11] point.

[00:30:14] Well, certainly locking the door locking her in her room is

[00:30:18] not going to you've got no chance now.

[00:30:21] That's why I meant Raniera.

[00:30:22] Sorry with the whole thing of maybe they should have treated.

[00:30:25] Right?

[00:30:26] Yeah.

[00:30:26] Yeah, but Raniera.

[00:30:27] Yeah, I see what you're saying.

[00:30:28] You know, have you ever imagined yourself on the throne?

[00:30:32] Well, that was great.

[00:30:36] Yeah, and I mean, we'll see what happens with Corliss next

[00:30:39] episode, but I think Rani's definitely hedges her bets, but

[00:30:44] she does immediately go fly off to see Raniera.

[00:30:47] I think just because she feels it's unjust to leave her

[00:30:50] blindsided.

[00:30:52] Right?

[00:30:52] Yeah agreed agreed and she's doing that much, you know to

[00:30:58] say like hey, of course the big conversation piece during,

[00:31:05] you know, when this first aired was well if she just, you

[00:31:08] know said the words, you know end of story.

[00:31:11] We would not have a season to necessarily right, but it's

[00:31:15] a debatable point should she have done it or should she

[00:31:17] had have not and there's a says it's not my war to start.

[00:31:21] I'll just kill a bunch of civilians and yeah, if she hadn't

[00:31:26] killed as many small folk then well, okay, maybe you know,

[00:31:28] but yeah, I end up killing a lot of small folk and it I

[00:31:32] don't know what it does to the the greens in as much as they

[00:31:38] just stared a dragon down the barrel of its, you know, fire

[00:31:44] breathing Ness.

[00:31:47] They didn't die.

[00:31:49] And so now is that supposed to strike fear into you and cow

[00:31:53] You and you know, have you step back from things or does that

[00:31:57] then spur you into action and you think oh, maybe I should

[00:32:02] go kill all my enemies right quick.

[00:32:04] You know, it's it's a difficult.

[00:32:08] It's not a difficult thing.

[00:32:09] It's like how is that going to you know, and there's there's

[00:32:13] this idea that you never threaten anything that you're not

[00:32:16] prepared to follow through on so right right she threatens

[00:32:20] them and then doesn't go through with it.

[00:32:22] So yeah, what's the message you're sending?

[00:32:24] I guess that's the big question.

[00:32:26] I'm asking what did you do rainies went by not burning them

[00:32:29] up but scaring them in that way.

[00:32:32] Did that actually measures?

[00:32:33] Yeah.

[00:32:34] Yeah half measures.

[00:32:35] We know where that got or the old king where that ended him

[00:32:39] up and Ned Stark, you know, Ned Stark is the king of half

[00:32:43] measures.

[00:32:43] There you go.

[00:32:44] Take your children and run.

[00:32:46] Oh, why would I let you do anything after that?

[00:32:48] Right?

[00:32:49] It's yeah, it's dumb person behavior as I like to say on

[00:32:53] the show.

[00:32:54] So that's the one mistake.

[00:32:55] I think yeah, she made I mean if she just busted out and flown

[00:32:58] away cool.

[00:32:59] Mm-hmm, you know fair enough or did she even need to come up

[00:33:03] through the probably not because she had probably blown out

[00:33:06] the door and called it good.

[00:33:08] Mm-hmm.

[00:33:08] So yeah, she wanted to make a statement.

[00:33:11] I think she just wanted to ruin that coronation.

[00:33:12] She just felt so sour about it.

[00:33:15] Yeah.

[00:33:15] Yeah, she did ruin it.

[00:33:18] Like she was successful in that right?

[00:33:23] Okay.

[00:33:23] All right.

[00:33:24] Well, let's take a quick break when we get back.

[00:33:26] We'll go to episode 10.

[00:33:31] We'll be right back with more House of the Dragon and we're

[00:33:40] back with more House of the Dragon.

[00:33:44] David it's time for episode 10 the finale of season one, which

[00:33:48] really I think impressed everybody.

[00:33:51] We were all very happy with it.

[00:33:52] I wouldn't came out and I was thrilled with it rewatching

[00:33:55] it.

[00:33:55] How about you?

[00:33:57] It was they stuck the landing as the kids say they really

[00:34:02] brought in.

[00:34:04] It was a great capstone episode.

[00:34:06] It resolves some plot lines.

[00:34:08] It opened up some new plot lines.

[00:34:10] It just they nailed it.

[00:34:12] There's I have very few notes for this.

[00:34:15] They I think they found the right way to generate more energy

[00:34:21] is while at the same time.

[00:34:23] They released all of the energy that had built up in season

[00:34:26] one.

[00:34:26] They nailed the balance perfectly.

[00:34:30] Yeah, it's such a great episode and you know that last shot

[00:34:35] of Raniera staring standing there and looking so resolved.

[00:34:42] I think is the most hype I've been for another season since

[00:34:47] Daenerys was sailing across the narrow sea in Game of Thrones.

[00:34:51] I think season six.

[00:34:52] It was okay.

[00:34:53] Maybe was season seven.

[00:34:54] But anyway, the point is it's hard to make me that hype for

[00:34:57] a season two cool.

[00:34:59] And here I am very excited for season two.

[00:35:03] It's hot Lor summer.

[00:35:04] It's hot Lor summer.

[00:35:05] Oh, I got to be faster.

[00:35:08] You're slow on the soundboard.

[00:35:09] I don't have my mouse.

[00:35:10] It's a whole thing.

[00:35:11] I'm traveling.

[00:35:12] I'm traveling.

[00:35:13] All right, Rhaenys arrives at Dragonstone to warn Raniera

[00:35:17] about the coronation and the impending attack by the greens.

[00:35:21] The distress sends Raniera into premature labor resulting in

[00:35:25] a stillbirth.

[00:35:26] At the pyre of her stillborn daughter, Sir.

[00:35:29] Eric arrives with Viserys's crown which Raniera accepts.

[00:35:33] The onlookers except Rhaenys kneel.

[00:35:37] So we started the season with a birthing scene and we end

[00:35:42] the season with a birthing scene.

[00:35:45] This one was less problematic.

[00:35:50] In some ways I wasn't as disturbed maybe just because there

[00:35:55] weren't any, you know, nursemaids, you know restraining the

[00:36:01] person.

[00:36:01] In fact they were told to get away.

[00:36:02] Yeah.

[00:36:03] So yeah, they were like, what can we help you?

[00:36:06] They're like now it's an interesting way to bookend the

[00:36:09] season.

[00:36:11] Mm-hmm.

[00:36:11] Yeah, this is someone who's really strong and really, you

[00:36:15] know in control of her situation.

[00:36:17] Well in control of her birthing situation.

[00:36:20] But at the same time she has to plead with her son to stop

[00:36:23] her husband from starting a war without her.

[00:36:28] Yeah, because Daemon's like let's go.

[00:36:30] Let me put on my boots.

[00:36:31] Let me get a sword and we're off to the races.

[00:36:34] And let's praise Jace for actually doing it.

[00:36:37] I mean, I'd be a little freaked out to stand up to uncle,

[00:36:41] father-uncle Daemon.

[00:36:43] Yeah, for real.

[00:36:44] And yeah, it's interesting.

[00:36:46] It's too bad these boys have such a stunted and messed up

[00:36:52] childhood because they, you know, they seem like pretty

[00:36:54] good kids.

[00:36:55] Yeah.

[00:36:56] You know that they could turn out, you know, if their

[00:37:00] father wasn't burned alive.

[00:37:01] If Harwin Strong wasn't, you know, it's all that weirdness.

[00:37:05] But yeah, these are good kids.

[00:37:08] Yeah.

[00:37:09] And I think Jace in particular has a really, he's one of

[00:37:13] the more fleshed-out ones in the books, I think.

[00:37:16] Okay.

[00:37:16] And I hope that they'll add even more in the show because

[00:37:20] it seems like an interesting plotline that he's going to

[00:37:22] have going for him.

[00:37:23] And obviously Luke's plotline is done so we don't have

[00:37:26] to worry about that.

[00:37:27] And Joffrey, we haven't even met.

[00:37:28] Right.

[00:37:30] What's the deal with her stillborn daughter?

[00:37:35] Did, was there some dragon-esque deformities there?

[00:37:43] So that's what it says in the book.

[00:37:45] Okay.

[00:37:45] But in the show, they took that out.

[00:37:47] It was just a normal human.

[00:37:49] Was it?

[00:37:50] Okay.

[00:37:50] Yeah, it was just gross.

[00:37:52] Okay.

[00:37:53] I thought I saw it.

[00:37:53] It was a human.

[00:37:55] All right.

[00:37:57] But in the book, that is what it's described as like,

[00:37:59] oh, it was like monstrous stillbirth.

[00:38:01] Right.

[00:38:02] Which is an awful way to talk about a stillbirth because

[00:38:04] it's a tragedy for anybody.

[00:38:06] But yeah, I mean, was it you who said or what did I just

[00:38:12] see this on Reddit or something like that?

[00:38:14] I know me and Reddit were so hard to.

[00:38:16] I know, I know.

[00:38:17] The funeral pyre.

[00:38:18] Oh, I don't know.

[00:38:19] We talk a lot.

[00:38:20] It's funny.

[00:38:21] I was saying the other day like people will point out

[00:38:24] to think to me things that I said on a podcast and I'll

[00:38:26] forget that I even said that.

[00:38:27] Yeah, completely.

[00:38:29] But I mean, there's what how many hours of us now?

[00:38:31] Anyway, the point is, you know, there's this lowest of low

[00:38:35] moment where she's burning a funeral pyre of her stillborn

[00:38:39] daughter.

[00:38:40] That's like her all-time low that is interrupted by her

[00:38:44] highest of high being crowned by I think Damon puts the

[00:38:49] crown on on physically, right?

[00:38:51] Yeah, and and Eric delivers it though, right?

[00:38:54] And her father's crown which I think was very meaningful

[00:38:57] to her.

[00:38:57] Like if if it were a reverse if they had Viserys's crown

[00:39:01] on Aegon and then Rhaenyra had to settle for a family

[00:39:04] antique.

[00:39:05] I think that she would not have been as happy but I think

[00:39:08] it was really meaningful for her to be wearing Viserys's

[00:39:10] crown.

[00:39:11] Hugely meaningful for Eric to bring it to her to to know

[00:39:16] that there's at least one person out there, right?

[00:39:20] Who was on the other team ostensibly in the other team's

[00:39:26] camp and then was like, you know what?

[00:39:29] I'm going to brave a whole bunch of dangers to try to deliver

[00:39:35] this to you because I believe in you and I recognize you

[00:39:39] as the legitimate person.

[00:39:41] That's pretty powerful.

[00:39:43] And I think that's got to do something to a person when

[00:39:46] they you know, when you start factoring that stuff and

[00:39:49] then like you say because it's her father's crown.

[00:39:52] It's a double whammy, right?

[00:39:54] And I think that Eric bringing the crown was enough of

[00:39:57] a loyalty test for Damon where he didn't Damon didn't

[00:40:00] have to do the dragon loyalty test like he did with the

[00:40:03] other ones.

[00:40:05] But but it is a big difference, right?

[00:40:07] You have some Kings guard who live there on Dragonstone

[00:40:10] with Rhaenyra.

[00:40:12] Yeah, and then others chose to come there like Lord

[00:40:16] Commander Westerling and Sir Eric Cargill, right?

[00:40:19] And yeah, it's it's super meaningful to hear.

[00:40:22] I mean like think about how we film and get a patreon

[00:40:24] subscriber and and amplify that by a million or any like

[00:40:28] I love I risk my life to help you.

[00:40:30] That's right.

[00:40:31] And then Renise doesn't bow and you kind of I don't

[00:40:35] know.

[00:40:35] I kind of respect her for that.

[00:40:37] I mean, she nods her head a little bit right if I

[00:40:40] remember right?

[00:40:41] I love she's really good at doing Eve best is really

[00:40:43] good at doing these smirks where you're like, I'm

[00:40:46] thinking about things.

[00:40:47] Yeah, I'm really I'm really processing information right

[00:40:51] now, you know that that kind of deal and I am I have

[00:40:54] such a history and stature in this kingdom that you

[00:40:58] know, it's cool and and there's a point which backs

[00:41:03] up her point of why she didn't burn up the the greens

[00:41:06] are there, you know arguably but the the point of can

[00:41:10] she speak for her house?

[00:41:11] She is not the spokesperson of Driftmark right?

[00:41:14] Her husband is and so can she bow for her house?

[00:41:18] Can she take a knee for her house?

[00:41:20] Protocol?

[00:41:21] I'm not sure.

[00:41:22] I don't know.

[00:41:22] I think if there were anybody else there Damon would

[00:41:25] have been them to bow.

[00:41:27] Yeah.

[00:41:28] They wouldn't knew that you can't you need honey for

[00:41:31] the valerians.

[00:41:32] You can't have you cannot have this, you know, you need

[00:41:36] the caron on the stick.

[00:41:37] Yeah, you don't want any bad blood with the with the

[00:41:39] Targaryens.

[00:41:42] So Otto Hightower presents a gons terms for surrender

[00:41:46] offering Rhaenyra Dragonstone and a confirmation of

[00:41:49] Lucerys is succession to Driftmark Damon tries to respond

[00:41:53] violently and Rhaenyra stops him and tells Otto she will

[00:41:57] consider it.

[00:41:58] She tells her black council that she must consider the

[00:42:01] good of the realm.

[00:42:04] So this happens on the walkway again, right?

[00:42:06] I watched these episodes the other week and I'm trying

[00:42:08] to picture the scene.

[00:42:10] Yeah, it is and Rhaenyra flies in a lands.

[00:42:13] Yeah lands behind Otto and is very threatening.

[00:42:17] So and this is and this is where we had earlier in the

[00:42:21] season when young Rhaenyra is coming to Damon asking for

[00:42:26] the eggs back and right this whole echoing of that

[00:42:31] situation again, perfect time to take out to decapitate

[00:42:35] your enemy.

[00:42:37] But yet she's trying to be honorable and you know, when

[00:42:42] when does honor get you killed or when does honor win

[00:42:44] you the war and I think yeah, I mean it's parlay right

[00:42:48] and you even see that later with Boros Beleriand.

[00:42:50] He's saying, you know, they came as a messenger.

[00:42:52] I'm not going to say that messengers are going to get

[00:42:54] killed when they come here.

[00:42:55] That's right.

[00:42:56] That's right.

[00:42:57] Salt and what is it bread and salt, you know, the I don't

[00:43:00] think he had bread and salt but that no, but you know,

[00:43:02] I mean the idea is yeah.

[00:43:03] Yeah.

[00:43:03] Yeah, there are forms that you follow and we saw in game

[00:43:06] of Thrones when those forms don't get followed it really

[00:43:10] upends social order and really business people off.

[00:43:14] Yep.

[00:43:15] Absolutely.

[00:43:16] If you come under a banner of treat then you have to respect

[00:43:20] that otherwise you you're really going to put yourself

[00:43:23] in a more precarious position, right?

[00:43:26] And I really love the way that Raniera considers here,

[00:43:30] you know, maybe it is right.

[00:43:32] You know, we have our life here.

[00:43:33] If my kids succession is, you know, if my kids succession

[00:43:38] is short up if I know that they're going to be okay when

[00:43:40] I'm gone then maybe it is best to just keep the peas here.

[00:43:46] Except auto Hightower.

[00:43:47] I just can't accept it right right from that dude.

[00:43:51] Well, well, I think she would have accepted them.

[00:43:54] Hmm.

[00:43:55] I kind of think she would have accepted them but for the

[00:43:59] killing of Lucerys.

[00:44:01] Hmm interesting.

[00:44:02] Okay.

[00:44:02] All right, because she doesn't accept them in that moment.

[00:44:04] Does she know she doesn't she says I'm going to consider

[00:44:06] you'll have my answer on the morrow.

[00:44:08] That's right.

[00:44:08] And then she goes back to the council and Damon's like that

[00:44:10] was insulting and Raniera's like was it it's I mean, you know,

[00:44:13] it's it's not right but it's tough because you know, she's

[00:44:19] Saying I don't want to be queen of the ashes which by the

[00:44:21] way is very reminiscent of Daenerys who eventually did go mad

[00:44:25] and burn up the whole city.

[00:44:28] But yeah, it's it's I think she would have chosen to keep

[00:44:32] peace for the sake of peace, which is in some ways a Val, you

[00:44:37] know a valiant effort right like a something that to be

[00:44:41] admired we in in our American history.

[00:44:44] We actually have a real-world example of that in the past

[00:44:47] presidential election where things were a little bit and

[00:44:50] somebody said, you know, okay, you know, I'll I'll accept the

[00:44:53] judgment.

[00:44:53] I won't fight on for this cause and so I think that's another

[00:44:57] thing that the show does really well is we can we can identify

[00:45:01] with and see all of these very human circumstances and human

[00:45:06] decisions that are being made and that makes the show much

[00:45:09] more compelling right because we can we can see Raniera trying

[00:45:13] to be centered and considerate and like you said, you know,

[00:45:18] not to be queen of the ashes and that's there's some real-world

[00:45:21] residents there.

[00:45:22] So right I agree with you.

[00:45:26] I agree that it does remind me now of the 2000 election.

[00:45:30] I'll just say it.

[00:45:30] I'll just say what it was.

[00:45:32] That's a good read.

[00:45:33] I never thought of it that way.

[00:45:34] So thank you for bringing that up.

[00:45:35] Well, that's why we podcast is we get to pull these different

[00:45:38] weird connections speaking of favorite music of from from

[00:45:41] Game of Thrones.

[00:45:43] I don't know if you ever saw somebody remixed Daenerys is

[00:45:47] dragon ride to an ACDC song and it was amazing.

[00:45:54] It was it worked really well.

[00:45:57] I have to I think I have to go watch that after we finish

[00:46:00] podcasting now.

[00:46:02] I'm trying to remember that was which ACDC song was it wasn't

[00:46:05] Hell's Bells.

[00:46:06] Maybe it was Hell's Bells.

[00:46:07] I have to Google it now read the next figure it out later.

[00:46:11] All right, Rhaenys and Corlys discuss the war and Corlys

[00:46:15] pledges to remain neutral Rhaenys convinces Corlys that

[00:46:21] Vranera is the only one keeping the realm together and Corlys

[00:46:25] allies with the blacks quickly.

[00:46:28] It was a Hell's Bells is it was Hell's Bells.

[00:46:31] Okay, great.

[00:46:32] I don't know.

[00:46:32] Do you have you did you ever see it?

[00:46:34] No, I know the song but I have not seen this.

[00:46:37] It's it's amazing.

[00:46:38] It makes that whole scene change for me.

[00:46:42] So yeah, just Google for ACDC Hell's Bells Daenerys and

[00:46:48] you'll find it.

[00:46:49] All right.

[00:46:50] So nice.

[00:46:51] All right.

[00:46:51] So yeah, poor Luke, right?

[00:46:54] He's got a ride into the storm.

[00:46:57] Oh, well, we didn't talk about Rhaenys.

[00:46:59] Oh, sorry.

[00:46:59] Did I jump the point?

[00:47:00] I was busy googling.

[00:47:02] I was Rhaenys.

[00:47:03] That's the that's the plot point.

[00:47:04] I've read don't worry, you know Corlys.

[00:47:07] Oh, here we are.

[00:47:08] He's like, oh, I'm finally ready to do the right thing and

[00:47:10] she's like don't do the right thing go and you know walk

[00:47:14] in with your with your swagger and pledge to with your

[00:47:19] bedtime story book reading voice and bend the knee.

[00:47:23] Yeah.

[00:47:24] I could listen to him all day and he does and he's kind

[00:47:29] of keeps everybody guessing a little bit but then yeah,

[00:47:31] he pulls through and I don't that's a big moment for

[00:47:35] black team black, right?

[00:47:37] It is it is I mean without the fleet.

[00:47:40] I think they are going to have a much tougher time with

[00:47:42] King's Landing.

[00:47:42] Yeah, they'd be really bottled up.

[00:47:44] They'd have very little technical mobility, especially

[00:47:47] since Dragonstone is just an island, right?

[00:47:49] It's not on the mainland.

[00:47:50] So they really need a Navy and you've got to you've got

[00:47:55] to be able to I mean King's Landing has access to a lot

[00:47:59] of fertile lands behind them.

[00:48:01] So but they still need trade goods minerals ores things

[00:48:04] like that that they get from other places.

[00:48:06] And so if you can bottle up part of their economic

[00:48:09] infrastructure with the ships, that's pretty important.

[00:48:13] Right and and cordless makes clear like we are going to

[00:48:16] stop the shipping lanes to sos.

[00:48:17] Yeah.

[00:48:18] Yeah, that's tough for King's Landing.

[00:48:20] I mean there's going to be starvation and something that

[00:48:24] really you don't you don't consider that much in this

[00:48:27] show because it's all focused on the Royals is the effect

[00:48:30] on the small folk and Miss Aria is what like I said when

[00:48:33] we talked to Anthony which people here next week Miss

[00:48:36] Aria is really one of the only characters that highlights

[00:48:39] that that highlights the effect on the small folk.

[00:48:42] That's true.

[00:48:43] She's the shows.

[00:48:44] She's our one entree into into the small folk, which I

[00:48:48] think you know, I have to give it to Martin that he does

[00:48:51] a pretty good job of this in the original books in terms

[00:48:55] of seeing the effect of war on the countryside and on

[00:49:00] people right?

[00:49:02] So to determine the loyalty of her prospective allies,

[00:49:06] Ranira sends Lucerys to Storm's End to meet with Boros

[00:49:10] Baratheon.

[00:49:12] She sends to Sarah's to Karis.

[00:49:14] Oh man to to the Reach and Winterfell to secure the loyalty

[00:49:20] of the errands and the Starks Damon tries to secure more

[00:49:24] dragons by going underneath the dragon mount to find Vermithor

[00:49:28] which by the way, the show doesn't name Vermithor but we

[00:49:31] all know it's Vermithor.

[00:49:32] Can we just dispense with tomfoolery?

[00:49:34] Sure.

[00:49:35] If you tell me if that's the case that I'll that's

[00:49:37] Vermithor.

[00:49:37] It's almost certainly Vermithor.

[00:49:39] Okay, I believe you which was King Jahaerys is dragons.

[00:49:44] Okay that has laid unclaimed since since his death got

[00:49:48] it and not wanting to be claimed.

[00:49:50] Right?

[00:49:51] So there's been no one to claim them and the question

[00:49:53] is who will be claiming these dragons because you need

[00:49:58] a rider for each of the dragons.

[00:49:59] Right, right.

[00:50:00] Who's going to claim them?

[00:50:01] Right.

[00:50:03] I feel bad for Luke.

[00:50:05] Luke, I think this is a tactical error.

[00:50:09] I think sending Luke to the Reach into Winterfell would

[00:50:13] have been the smarter play because.

[00:50:16] Well, the idea was you go across the street.

[00:50:18] You're the younger one and the other ones will do the

[00:50:20] perilous journeys to the Reach and Winterfell.

[00:50:23] Yeah, and that made that has a logic too, but it's just

[00:50:26] the Baratheons with Boros was just not at all receptive.

[00:50:31] Nevermind that Aemond is there, nevermind that it's a

[00:50:34] storm.

[00:50:35] It was like he had the Boros was just.

[00:50:39] Well, it's storms and there's always storms in the

[00:50:40] Stormland.

[00:50:41] Sure.

[00:50:41] Yeah.

[00:50:42] It's often stormy.

[00:50:43] Right, but in this case, right?

[00:50:46] This little kid getting beat up by this storm.

[00:50:51] And how do how do Dryavans navigate?

[00:50:53] They must have some onboard GPS stuff.

[00:50:56] How did that anyway?

[00:50:57] Yeah, doesn't matter.

[00:50:58] I don't know.

[00:50:59] I just feel a piece of clothing from the place you're going

[00:51:01] to.

[00:51:02] I guess.

[00:51:03] I mean the Ravens get around so the you know, the dragons

[00:51:05] must be fair enough.

[00:51:07] Magic as they say.

[00:51:08] Yeah, I just feel bad for Luke having to go to this really

[00:51:11] difficult place in this, you know under difficult circumstances

[00:51:16] right regardless of the fact that Aemond is, you know, already

[00:51:19] there.

[00:51:21] So I just yeah Boros was just not nice.

[00:51:25] I guess I'm reacting to that as much as anything and really

[00:51:29] great visuals to in the scene just in the Stormlands and

[00:51:32] the you know, escorting him into the castle and then with

[00:51:40] I have to look at the show guide Vagar for you know, rising

[00:51:44] up behind there and then you get a real scale of how big

[00:51:47] Vagar is relative to other stuff.

[00:51:49] You're like, oh damn, that's a big dragon and Luke is small.

[00:51:54] He's a tough dude.

[00:51:56] He's well, she's a tough.

[00:51:57] Yeah.

[00:51:58] Oh, yes.

[00:51:59] And what is a Lucas on Arax who's a Wormling practically?

[00:52:05] Yeah, really young dragon and that's that again.

[00:52:08] That's part of the reason why that's part of the reason why

[00:52:12] she wanted to care us to go to the north right because it was

[00:52:16] a long trip, right?

[00:52:18] Right.

[00:52:18] It would be physically physically taxing to get up there

[00:52:21] on Little Arax.

[00:52:23] Right, but then it's well.

[00:52:24] We'll get to it in a minute.

[00:52:25] But let's let's talk about it.

[00:52:27] Let's talk about it at Luke arrives at the Storm's End.

[00:52:31] Mm-hmm.

[00:52:31] Keep going to find a Mund already allied with Lord Boros

[00:52:36] and betrothed to his daughter when a mend demands an eye

[00:52:40] from Luke Boros prohibits violence in his Hall Luke attempts

[00:52:44] to ride home and is attacked by a mend and Vagar both dragon

[00:52:49] riders lose control of their dragons and Vagar eats Luke

[00:52:53] and Eric's Ranira learns about the death and cries before

[00:52:59] finding her resolve.

[00:53:02] So yeah, I'm just trying to give what order to address

[00:53:08] things here.

[00:53:08] I mean Luke losing control of his dragon like what are you

[00:53:12] doing attacking a dragon?

[00:53:15] That's like 15 times bigger than you.

[00:53:17] I mean, I know he's trying to control his mount but what

[00:53:20] do you well?

[00:53:21] I don't think he ever wanted Eric's to do it.

[00:53:25] I think the whole point was Vagar was because Luke Amon has

[00:53:30] more control over Vagar sure then Luke had over Eric's so

[00:53:34] Eric's trick the first blow even though Vaman was very big

[00:53:38] are they meant Vagar was getting too close.

[00:53:41] They are was really making it difficult for Eric's to fly

[00:53:46] and it was invading personal space.

[00:53:47] So Eric's gave sort of a you know, when a dog is not

[00:53:52] aggressive but scared they just they put their mouth on.

[00:53:57] You know your arm.

[00:53:58] Okay, that makes sense.

[00:53:59] Right?

[00:53:59] I think that's what yeah, I think that's what Eric's did

[00:54:02] and Vagar was like you want to play little boy and Vagar

[00:54:08] just completely demolished him.

[00:54:10] Obviously that makes sense because it seemed like such a

[00:54:13] frontal attack right just breathing fire on the side of his

[00:54:16] head, but it's I get it I get their fire resistant, right?

[00:54:20] So so it seems like what's it going to do?

[00:54:22] You know, it's Eric's just being like hey get you don't give

[00:54:25] me.

[00:54:25] Yeah.

[00:54:25] I'm just kind of I'm going to bop you a little bit because

[00:54:28] I'm scared and I'm trying to get you to back off a little

[00:54:31] bit.

[00:54:31] Yeah.

[00:54:32] Okay, that makes sense.

[00:54:33] Now that makes more sense.

[00:54:33] I like it.

[00:54:34] I see it as like two dogs, right?

[00:54:36] Yeah, I love the visual of just the in the flat spin of the

[00:54:41] object of the body parts and stuff falling into the sea.

[00:54:45] There's no no flaming, you know, nothing.

[00:54:48] No.

[00:54:48] No, this is pretty indignant, right?

[00:54:50] You just got chomped and all of this stuff is just drifting

[00:54:52] down to the ocean.

[00:54:53] It's it's pretty pretty sad, but visually it was amazing and

[00:54:57] the whole fight, you know in the flight through the storm

[00:55:02] clouds and stuff that it it all worked on me really well,

[00:55:05] right?

[00:55:06] Can we agree that porous Baratheon is illiterate?

[00:55:09] Yeah.

[00:55:09] Oh, yeah.

[00:55:09] Yeah.

[00:55:09] Yeah.

[00:55:09] Yeah.

[00:55:10] It's like where's the hands at all Easter man and we get

[00:55:13] to see a man's eye.

[00:55:16] That was very cool.

[00:55:17] The the gem thing that he's got in there.

[00:55:19] I'm sure there's some lore all about that.

[00:55:22] It's spooky.

[00:55:23] Yeah, it's very spooky makes him look very spooky evil.

[00:55:27] And yeah, I guess it was I mean Raniere is saying, okay,

[00:55:33] you know, you're my bannerman you're sworn to me.

[00:55:35] You're supposed to be, you know, loyal to me, but he didn't

[00:55:38] come with anything in his hand, right?

[00:55:40] He didn't come with promises or anything just like

[00:55:44] you know, he kind of calls it rightly out.

[00:55:46] You know, you expect me to be like a dog.

[00:55:50] Right, right.

[00:55:52] Yeah, and it's really tough.

[00:55:55] I mean if I were boros and I was really trying to you know,

[00:55:59] stop this violence.

[00:56:00] I'd say a man if you want my respect and my allegiance do

[00:56:03] not leave this room until Eric's is far away, you know, stay

[00:56:07] an extra couple hours at the same time.

[00:56:10] I think a man had already won and a man would have just gone

[00:56:14] anyway.

[00:56:16] So I don't know if anyone could have stopped this from happening

[00:56:18] other than and yeah, it's true.

[00:56:21] It's true.

[00:56:24] Right?

[00:56:24] What's next?

[00:56:26] Next is listener feedback.

[00:56:27] Oh, are we done?

[00:56:29] Well, we can talk about Raniere's resolve, but that's

[00:56:32] your it.

[00:56:33] Yeah, I guess.

[00:56:34] Yeah, and it what a great way because we're all like oh

[00:56:37] shit.

[00:56:39] Like right.

[00:56:39] Is that going to do and do we know if season two is a season

[00:56:45] two going to pick right up or are we going to be sort of in

[00:56:49] media?

[00:56:49] Right?

[00:56:50] I think it's several days later.

[00:56:52] I think that's it.

[00:56:52] So it's still gonna be pretty fresh.

[00:56:54] All right, that's cool.

[00:56:55] And then things are going to eat.

[00:56:56] It has to pick right up.

[00:56:59] Just trust me.

[00:56:59] It's going to pick right up.

[00:57:00] It's going to pick right up.

[00:57:01] Cool.

[00:57:02] Yeah, we got and we did 80 episodes.

[00:57:04] So or we're doing 80 episodes this season.

[00:57:07] So yeah, it's got to be it's gonna be intense.

[00:57:08] I think and early reviews are good people went to the premiere

[00:57:12] and are saying it was really great.

[00:57:14] Okay, so outlaw summer skidding off to a bang.

[00:57:17] We've got a cool.

[00:57:20] Acolytes coming in with some good early reviews and if house

[00:57:23] of the dragon comes in early, I haven't heard anything about

[00:57:25] the boys yet.

[00:57:26] So yeah, I haven't either.

[00:57:29] Yeah, I'm looking forward to watching the acolyte.

[00:57:32] It's coming out tonight.

[00:57:34] Yes exciting.

[00:57:36] Yeah.

[00:57:36] All right.

[00:57:37] So what do we got feedback wise?

[00:57:38] We've got a couple pieces of feedback one was from Nicole

[00:57:41] B who wrote in a couple weeks ago, but we were not up to

[00:57:44] this yet.

[00:57:44] So I saved it for this episode.

[00:57:46] Okay, said waiting for episode 9 for this.

[00:57:49] It's about the green Council episode.

[00:57:51] Okay, Nicole B by the way, you can write in just like Nicole

[00:57:54] B by going to hot D at the lorehounds.com sending us an

[00:57:56] email or you can go to the lorehounds.com click on the

[00:57:59] contact page and leave us a contact for a mentor or a

[00:58:02] voicemail could also tag us on Discord.

[00:58:05] Plenty of ways to do it.

[00:58:06] Yep.

[00:58:07] Hey guys, there is a brilliant callback in this episode that

[00:58:11] really brings Allison's character into focus after her day

[00:58:14] of scheming.

[00:58:15] She returns to her chambers to pour some wine and finds Laris

[00:58:17] waiting for her.

[00:58:19] She says the hour is late Lord Laris.

[00:58:22] This is near the same response Allison had in her in earlier

[00:58:26] in the season when Viserys summons her to bed.

[00:58:29] She is about to enjoy her tea and is interrupted by the maid

[00:58:33] delivering the message.

[00:58:35] Allison responds.

[00:58:36] The hour is quite late.

[00:58:38] I find this is a fascinating bit of character building as

[00:58:42] both lines are in response to the implication of sexual acts

[00:58:46] for which Allison is simply trying to do to fool but unlike

[00:58:49] Viserys who is her Lord husband and King here is a queen who

[00:58:52] gives into the power of others rather than use her power as

[00:58:55] Queen over them.

[00:58:56] She could easily flex Authority when Laris would find and with

[00:58:59] Laris and find a less demeaning way to use and prefer information

[00:59:03] and her dirty work, but she submits her feet for his fetish

[00:59:07] and turns away disgusted with herself.

[00:59:10] Even after being Queen for so many years.

[00:59:12] She has not learned how to play the game of Thrones instead

[00:59:15] of being played.

[00:59:17] Yeah, that's that's that's rough.

[00:59:19] That's rough.

[00:59:20] I think Laris.

[00:59:22] I think she also knows how dangerous Laris is.

[00:59:23] That's the problem is like Laris has had many people killed.

[00:59:28] Yeah and killed in her name.

[00:59:30] And so he's got actually some blackmail on top of her, right?

[00:59:34] Yeah that and I mean she knows that he has a spy network in

[00:59:38] the Red Keep.

[00:59:39] He could very easily order her killed and she would be dead.

[00:59:42] She wouldn't be able to do anything to stop it.

[00:59:44] That's true.

[00:59:44] So I think he has some real power over her unfortunately

[00:59:47] because he's an awful person.

[00:59:48] Yeah.

[00:59:49] Yeah.

[00:59:49] No, she's in for a penny already here.

[00:59:52] So it's too late.

[00:59:53] It's too late for her and she doesn't have the guile to roll

[00:59:58] up his spy network or to take it over because you don't right

[01:00:01] right.

[01:00:01] It'd be better to decapitate and take over his network than

[01:00:05] it is to to try to take it out.

[01:00:08] That would be a very hard thing to do.

[01:00:10] You're going to be really accomplished to do that.

[01:00:13] So Nicole says I am not team Queen as I lost all sympathy

[01:00:19] for Allison with how she handled her rapist son and plan

[01:00:23] teeing Diana but high praise to the writers for this bit of

[01:00:28] storytelling team Rainese all the way that dragon riding mama

[01:00:32] bear warrior would have ruled over the seven kings way better

[01:00:34] than any of the blacks and greens.

[01:00:36] Thanks for the coverage Nicole.

[01:00:38] Thanks, Nicole.

[01:00:39] Yeah, thanks.

[01:00:40] And I know David you are a big Rene's and Eve best Stan.

[01:00:46] One of my faves.

[01:00:47] Absolutely.

[01:00:48] I can't wait to see what they get up to this season.

[01:00:51] Mm-hmm.

[01:00:52] I just love the precarious pathway that the Targaryens

[01:00:57] are walking and that she's walking right?

[01:00:59] She's got a lot of power and she has to know when to flex

[01:01:02] that power just enough to protect her position.

[01:01:05] But if she doesn't flex enough she can easily be wiped off

[01:01:08] the map, right?

[01:01:09] So right and then just all the tragedies with her kids, you

[01:01:12] know, and you know, hopefully hopefully her granddaughters

[01:01:17] can have a better fate.

[01:01:19] Yeah, absolutely.

[01:01:21] So swampy writes in with a subject line hot damn hot day.

[01:01:27] Just finished my hot tea rewatch in preparation for season

[01:01:29] two and I'm struck by the high quality of the writing on

[01:01:33] rewatch my wife and I were pointing out all the ways the

[01:01:35] war could have been avoided throughout the entire season.

[01:01:38] It starts with the prologue at the great Council where

[01:01:40] rainies could have been named her son.

[01:01:42] Lenore would have been the clear air and rainies would

[01:01:45] have guided the succession with a strong hand unlike

[01:01:48] busy tea episode eight was my favorite because you can see

[01:01:52] the Saris being tested and rising to the occasion beautifully

[01:01:55] at the very last minute.

[01:01:56] Allison and Raniera are clearly ready to mend fences, but

[01:02:00] the weight of all the bad decisions is too great and a gone

[01:02:04] and a amen to rotten.

[01:02:06] This through line goes all the way to the death of Lucerys

[01:02:09] and Eric's which was the perfect way to end the season

[01:02:13] because the tragedy felt both avoidable and inevitable.

[01:02:17] Yeah, if only Raniera had sent someone else to storms and

[01:02:20] instead of Luke if only the dragons were slightly better

[01:02:22] trained, but of course the Saris pointed out in episode

[01:02:25] one that the dragons are too hard to control.

[01:02:31] If only a man wouldn't have been so reckless.

[01:02:33] If only he had been raised 5% better by Allison who should

[01:02:36] have had a better who should have had a better dad than

[01:02:40] auto at every turn.

[01:02:42] The characters are thrust into the worst possible timeline

[01:02:45] and I can't wait for season two of the drawn-out car crash

[01:02:48] that is hot.

[01:02:48] D keep up the great coverage swampy.

[01:02:53] Thanks swampy.

[01:02:56] I agree with a lot of your points there.

[01:02:58] I think that there are a lot of exit ramps on this war path

[01:03:02] and nobody took any of them.

[01:03:04] So here we are, but you know what?

[01:03:06] It's better TV if they don't take any exit ramps because

[01:03:08] we want the war.

[01:03:10] It's not real people.

[01:03:10] It's okay.

[01:03:12] I think to the outlines the point of all of the little

[01:03:20] missteps all of the little slights all of the little secrets

[01:03:24] all of these little cuts and hurts and bruises that just

[01:03:29] keep building up and building up and you know, when when

[01:03:32] Amond is like, oh shit.

[01:03:36] I just killed Luke.

[01:03:38] I didn't mean for that to happen.

[01:03:40] I was just having a little bit of fun in my own way, you know,

[01:03:44] it's just all these things just build up and they just lead

[01:03:47] to this completely out of control situation and to pull that

[01:03:52] off in the on the script on the page is one thing but then

[01:03:56] to pull it off through the narration and the character development

[01:04:01] chef's kiss for the writers on this production team because

[01:04:06] they really balanced what could have gone easily off the rails

[01:04:11] on either sides of in terms of character development and all

[01:04:15] these different plot points.

[01:04:16] So yeah, I totally agree.

[01:04:18] They did.

[01:04:18] They everyone did a great job this season.

[01:04:21] So I'm very excited for season speaking.

[01:04:24] Yes, this is it right?

[01:04:26] Let's talk about what's happening now.

[01:04:28] I do a weekly podcast schedule that I've been working on and

[01:04:33] I was a little late with us this week, but it's out now.

[01:04:36] We've got on the lorehounds main feed this podcast.

[01:04:39] Doctor Who season one episode six dot and bubble really good
