[00:00:24] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm John. And this is our instant reactions to the HBO Limited Series, The Penguin, Episode 1 titled After Hours.

[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_04]: We're going to start off with our spoiler free hot take. So if you haven't seen it yet, you can get a sense of if the show is something that you're going to want to check out.

[00:00:43] [SPEAKER_04]: After a big spoiler warning, we'll get into the show by looking at the three main characters, Oswald, Victor and Sophia.

[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_01]: We're still working out our coverage plan since this show kind of snuck up on us, but it's too good not to cover.

[00:00:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Alicia couldn't make this record in but we'll be covering with us in the future. She did send an a voice mail which we will play in the spoiler section.

[00:01:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Speaking of voice mails, send feedback to Lorehounds at The Lorehounds.com or head over to our website and use the contact form or the built-in voice mail feature.

[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_01]: We welcome you to join the conversation on our Discord server. We have a great my team and a dedicated channel set up for the Penguin.

[00:01:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Links for everything are in the show notes.

[00:01:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Before we get into our spoiler free hot takes, I just wanted to check in on a couple of the production details.

[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_04]: So folks know what to expect since this is a show that's just sort of coming at us.

[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_04]: We knew it was coming but we didn't know that it was going to have this much eat on it.

[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_04]: The log line is set one week after the events of The Batman, the series explores the rise to power of Oswald Os Cobb aka The Penguin.

[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_04]: It's an eight episode limited series on HBO Max from now forward.

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_04]: It's going to be running on Sunday nights from September 29th through November 10th.

[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_04]: It's created by Lauren LaFranck and it's in production with DC Studios and Warner Brothers.

[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Like I said, it's a spin-off of the 2022 movie which was written and directed by Matt Reeves and starred Robert Pattinson and Zoe Crabbitz.

[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_04]: This show, Colin Ferrell, Repyze, is the Penguin and it also stars Kristen Milotti and Ren Zay Files.

[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Jean, what are your initial impressions of episode one?

[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_01]: This is just a great show.

[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_01]: This is just a great show and I love that the continuation from The Batman film through this show, The Time Frame, of one week following the events of The Film,

[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_01]: this is just a very, very high hope for the rest of the season because this first episode.

[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Like you said, you don't need to have watched The Movie in order to enjoy this show.

[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_01]: That's how well it is.

[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_01]: You will be dropped into this world and immediately you'll be drawn in.

[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I think and you'll get the sense of what this is all about.

[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't have any watch the movie.

[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_01]: So this is a real testament to the storytelling that they did in this first episode.

[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_01]: I love the else worlds that they've built the else worlds when you hear me say this.

[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_01]: A few times, probably over the next month and a half, is a story that is told about the characters in DC Comics but they don't take place in the main DC comic universe.

[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_01]: So this allows different artists, different writers to have a different take on popular characters.

[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_01]: So they already said that this movie is an else worlds movie which doesn't take place in the upcoming James Gun DC universe reboot.

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Let me just clear clarify it.

[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_04]: The 2022 movie is an elsewhere or the show is an elsewhere.

[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_01]: This is a universe.

[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_01]: This entire storyline.

[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_01]: This storyline that they're telling is not the main storyline that you'll get when James Gunn reboots the DC universe.

[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.

[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_01]: So this takes place outside of that continuity which we're going to start getting at the end of this year with creature commandos and then into next year with the Superman movie.

[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_04]: This is really interesting because DC or Marvel ran into a problem and then they tried to solve it with the multiverse.

[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_04]: And so now DC is trying to learn from those mistakes and just running into the, the, the, I guess the walls and pitfalls of this kind of storytelling taking comics because comics you can do this kind of stuff all the time.

[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_04]: You can just chop and change and put different characters in different universes and have all kinds of fun, but it's different for TV and movies.

[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.

[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And it has its own challenges and I think so it'll be interesting to see how DC picks up from what MCU discovered as it was working its way through these different kinds of story constructions and what is feasible and plausible on screen versus from on paper right.

[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah it's going to be.

[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm excited for it.

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry.

[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I then we have this whole new show comics versus what you and Alicia are going to spearhead in terms of covering the DCU stuff which you got a great podcast a couple of episodes back where you are.

[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you. Thank you for the food again.

[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to do we're going to cover everything.

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And just because it's not in the main DCU continuity doesn't mean that we're not going to cover it.

[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_01]: We're going to cover it.

[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Right.

[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Because we're crazy.

[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And then the last thing I'll see.

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah Colin Farrow.

[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Christian Melody.

[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Renzi Feliz.

[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_01]: What a job.

[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's for them.

[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_01]: So what a job of three actors just drawing people into their characters.

[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Really making you want to stick around to see what is going on with these people that they portray.

[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Really, really great.

[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And the last thing I'll say is, digital,

[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, panel.

[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, man.

[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Aziz, man.

[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_01]: So good.

[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Woo.

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Man.

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_04]: They've really assembled an awesome cast for that.

[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_01]: They did.

[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_01]: They did.

[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah.

[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_04]: I want to echo that point which is you don't have to have seen the 2022 Vllbatman movie to enjoy the show.

[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Like I'm just going to super reinforce that.

[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_04]: If you're into this kind of gritty crime, gangster, mobster type thing, then watch up to the first,

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know, five minutes or so.

[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Up till they drop the first title card.

[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a kind of a quasi-cold open.

[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_04]: And if the show doesn't grab you within those first five-ish minutes, cool.

[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Right?

[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_04]: But everything you need for the show is in that opening scene.

[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_04]: And now I haven't seen the Batman movie.

[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_04]: It's, you know, the DC stuff isn't typically things that I would run out initially to see.

[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_04]: And we know the DC use been struggling trying to figure their way out.

[00:07:37] [SPEAKER_04]: But hopefully, you know, we're going to see some really good stuff.

[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I watched the trailer for the Batman movie.

[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Last night after I finished my second watch of episode one of the Penguin.

[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_04]: And I can really see the visual style and a bunch of world-building Easter eggs.

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_04]: But it didn't make a difference for me when I first watched episode one.

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_04]: I saw some things that I was like, huh, that's interesting or isn't, oh, that's cool.

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Wow, that's a cool visual shot.

[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_04]: But then when I saw the trailer for the movie, I was like, oh, that's from that.

[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And that's from that. Okay, that's interesting.

[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_04]: So, anything that they're including from the movie is for people who saw the movie, the rest of us who haven't seen the movie, no problem at all.

[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Because this is a character driven story.

[00:08:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely, absolutely.

[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Colin Farrell just absolutely disappears into this role.

[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_04]: I remember a couple of times when there were some close-up shots of Colin Farrell playing Oswald.

[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_04]: And I was like trying to look, it's like, where's Colin Farrell in there?

[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_04]: I couldn't find him. I couldn't find him visually. I couldn't find him auditorally.

[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_04]: I couldn't find him in his mannerisms. Colin Farrell is not there.

[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_04]: This is Oswald. This is the Penguin on screen and it is an incredible performance.

[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely mind-boggling.

[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Something else I really loved about it is that Gotham is not New York City, but it is.

[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a cipher for a big city thing.

[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_04]: And it has its own history and its issues and goings on.

[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_04]: But it is also New York City.

[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_04]: And then when they filmed this in real world in New York City, I keep seeing places that I know.

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Like I would have known that place. I know exactly where they were filming that.

[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And so it was really weird, cool experience of being like transported but also just remembering Gotham is Gotham.

[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think they're really doing a nice job of having, quote unquote, Gotham as a character right in this and we're just inhabiting this world.

[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's really, they do a really good job with that.

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_04]: A lot of the initial themes, they're just straightforward gangster elements.

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_04]: But what's interesting is that we're transported into this superhero world.

[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_04]: So somewhere out there, we know that there are these other forces at play, but we're really just focused in on the sort of crime family style drama.

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_04]: But the show is so well constructed with such great characterizations.

[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_04]: They don't treat us dumb.

[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_04]: They, they really pay attention to the story construction.

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_04]: So little things that are introduced at the beginning play off nicely later on in the show,

[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_04]: which really shows me that the show runners know what they're doing and how to write a modern day television show.

[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_04]: They treat us for respect.

[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_04]: It, you know, smart characters doing smart things, not dumb characters doing dumb things or good characters doing dumb things I should say.

[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_04]: And it just feels just so well envisioned and put together.

[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_04]: I was just really satisfied from a prestige drama level right that there,

[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_04]: really know what they're doing and how to tell a story.

[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_04]: And then the last thing I'll say before we get into our, our full spoiler conversation.

[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_04]: And like we said, we're still working out our coverage.

[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_04]: So today we're just going to talk about the characters and build a little bit of hype and then we'll get into some kind of regular coverage going forward.

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_04]: The last thing I'll say is the sound design on this is incredible.

[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_04]: The way that they'll indecene with this just drop of a violin note playing and then they'll cut it just knocked me off my socks.

[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_04]: I really wanted to be like an audience around, you know, it sounds weird or to experience this because when they punch you, they punch you hard.

[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_04]: And then you don't know what's common.

[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_04]: It's just like bam, punch and you're just really left.

[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm just so pleased with with how well they've they built this and I'm really looking forward to it.

[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Awesome, awesome.

[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Cool. All right. So this is your big spoiler warning.

[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_04]: We are going to shift into talking about the movie.

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I think we should do a little world building.

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Just so if you can just let us know a little bit about the movie and what to, you know, what to take out from that world before we start watching this.

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And then we'll talk about Oz, Vic and Sophia as our sort of entry point into the show.

[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_04]: But to set that up, let's play Alicia's voice mail.

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Hey, it's Alicia checking in on the first episode of the Penguin, so glad that you guys are deciding to talk about this.

[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_00]: We have the three of us after we watch the first episode, we're all immediately like, yeah, we're going to need to do more than a one shot on this one.

[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm definitely giving you a 10 out of 10 so far. Well, one minor quibble, I'll guess that in a minute, but I am of the crowd that has a mixed opinion of the movie, the Batman.

[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_00]: I won't get into that now and I know lots of other people love that movie, high show.

[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_00]: But the Penguin was easily my favorite character in that film and since we got just a tease of him, I was immediately excited to hear that this is the character getting the TV spin off treatment.

[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm thrilled to say that I have none of the quibbles with a script or directing that left me Luke warm on that film. So, very excited setting up an incredible character study.

[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_00]: The opening scene was the perfect setup. We see how Oswald Cobb is smart enough to act subservient when he needs to even when it's not knows little rich boy up to a point.

[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_00]: And we see what that breaking point is when Os shares an honest moment at a glimpse of the way he'd like to be seen as a crime lord, yes, but a benevolent one.

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_00]: And then he gets laughed at and now we know do not laugh at Oswald Cobb.

[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_00]: And then the episode goes, as the episode goes on, we get more glimpses of this character's many layers in the way he immediately becomes protective of his new number two victor once he realizes he is a stutter.

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_00]: His relationship with his mother and the lengths he goes to to hide her, his secret love of dolly part and these are all the like the myriad little details that make a fully formed and fascinating character.

[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_00]: I really only have the one quibble which is like this is really my only minor quibble with the show so far is the way they're using AI to finish the visuals.

[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_00]: It definitely has to do with the way they need to stretch their budget a little further for TV, but yeah, the unnatural smoothness of the character's skin and some background effects, etc.

[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I took me out occasionally from time to time, but I'm happy to squint through that until my brain adjust to experience a story that's cast the writing and directing the rest of the production design.

[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_00]: This is definitely going to end up in my top shows of the year ranking.

[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_00]: We're so lucky to get this and Agatha all along at the same time.

[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_00]: They're just two totally different flavors of comic book adaptations and both delivering at the top of their game.

[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_00]: I can't wait to talk about the rest of the show with you guys this fall.

[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Good setup, thank you, Alicia.

[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Jean, I think she wraps it nicely and gives us a good trajectory to start with.

[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_04]: What do we kind of need to know from the 2022 movie?

[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_01]: The first thing we need to know is that I absolutely love it.

[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's get out of the way right now.

[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I am not a detractor of the Batman.

[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I am a firm 10 toes down.

[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_01]: They can begin my business with the Batman.

[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to hear anything about it.

[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's out of the way. Let's get that out of the way.

[00:15:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm planning to watch it myself, by the way.

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_01]: So the last thing you said about the sound.

[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_01]: That's one of the reasons I love that movie.

[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, okay.

[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_01]: So pay attention if you're different when you watch it.

[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I will.

[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I want to have fun.

[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Put on headphones.

[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_01]: The show and the movie are seamless because the show picks up a week after the ending of the movie.

[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_01]: So everything that's transpired in the movie is having an effect on the show right now.

[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_01]: In real time, the beauty of the show is that you don't have to have seen the movie to understand what's going on.

[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_01]: But for those of us who did watch the movie, it's like, oh wow.

[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_01]: When he tells Victor that his, his 10th Amendment is gone, there's a reason his 10th Amendment is gone.

[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Right? It was washed away in the movie.

[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Right?

[00:16:35] [SPEAKER_01]: There are ramifications of the things that transpired within the Batman that we're watching play out in the TV show.

[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_01]: So if I call on his dad, who is going to replace him?

[00:16:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Who is going to be the number one?

[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Who's going to be the boss of the games?

[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Who's going to run the city?

[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.

[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_01]: As was firmly not in that lane in the movie.

[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. He was a soldier.

[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_01]: He was a soldier.

[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Mid-level man.

[00:17:06] [SPEAKER_01]: He was mid-left?

[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Right.

[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And he sees this as his opportunity to shine, to grab a hold of power.

[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_01]: And when he gets laughed at by the sun-a-walk people.

[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Do you know what Michael Zigen who is playing now, Bertha Salkone?

[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_04]: So just really quick on Michael Zigen.

[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_04]: He's a solid well-known actor, right?

[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_04]: And to bring him in and the shoot him in the first five minutes, that is confident.

[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Incredible.

[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Incredible.

[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_01]: To do that, come on.

[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_01]: And the thing is, you know, in the movie, you get hints, little hints of deceiving that Oz has.

[00:17:55] Mm-hmm.

[00:17:55] [SPEAKER_01]: In the show he gets to let that out.

[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.

[00:17:59] [SPEAKER_01]: And ways that he wasn't able to in the movie, because the movie firmly cast him as henchmen.

[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_04]: So you know what this kind of reminds me of a little bit of an indoor.

[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Where we take this, you know, character from this other story who is important in this other story.

[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_04]: And then Diego Luna is like, yeah, we should do a series about him and then boom we get, you know, an indoor.

[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_04]: And so it's, because I think Colin Farrell stepped up and said, hey, I won't, you know, this is a really great character.

[00:18:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Let's build him out.

[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Is that the case?

[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not sure I've read all the back.

[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think it's a little bit different because the movie wasn't Batman versus Penguin.

[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't Batman versus Oz.

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_01]: He played a role, but his role was not to be the antagonist.

[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Right.

[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't the foil.

[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.

[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's a little bit different in that way.

[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_01]: The thing that is exciting about the show is again, the continuity.

[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_01]: I rarely see this between two stories.

[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_01]: It's really important to me because I know already we already discussed that.

[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_01]: These versions of these characters, they're not going to be the main versions in the DC universe.

[00:19:21] [SPEAKER_01]: That James is going to, it's bringing out.

[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know when will ever see these versions again.

[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_01]: I know the Batman is getting a second movie, but Penguin and all of these characters, we don't know when we'll see them again.

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_01]: To have them in this show, central to the Gotham experience is really, really cool to see.

[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_01]: And the thing is Batman is not a character in this show.

[00:19:55] [SPEAKER_01]: He's not someone that's going to show.

[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_01]: We know he's not showing up, they say he's not showing up.

[00:20:01] [SPEAKER_01]: But they haven't even mentioned.

[00:20:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.

[00:20:06] [SPEAKER_04]: We get that brief mention of the Joker in the news reports, which I thought was a really smart decision on the writers' standpoint.

[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Was, okay, we got to inject a bunch of exposition right in off the bat.

[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_04]: So people feel, understand the world.

[00:20:25] [SPEAKER_04]: And by using the news report style to give us that information dump,

[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_04]: not only was efficient, but it also worked from a world building standpoint because they wrapped it in.

[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_04]: They let us know the time and place of this, even if I'm coming into this and I don't know,

[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_04]: is this in the past, is this in the future?

[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_04]: This is a world that I can recognize because the way that they have the talking heads on the news and the kind of thing.

[00:20:52] [SPEAKER_04]: And the whole thing.

[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_04]: And they gave me everything I needed to know quickly and efficiently and then got that out of the way so he could get right into the story.

[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Into their story.

[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Into their story.

[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_04]: And then they mentioned Batman briefly and then they mentioned the Joker and then that was it.

[00:21:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And then they just talk about the seawall, blah, blah, blah and then they talk about the gangs.

[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Now I'm ready to go.

[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And that's so smart.

[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_01]: So, and well done, right?

[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Because it eliminates the expectation that anyone might have to think that this is a story about penguin versus that man.

[00:21:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Not, this is a story about us, right?

[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_01]: About how he goes the links that he will go to to get to the position that he wants to get.

[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_01]: How many other characters have we watched go through these same steps?

[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Go through these same things trying to get what they want, what they feel they deserve, what they feel is warranted,

[00:21:55] [SPEAKER_01]: what they feel is theirs.

[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_01]: This is not simply a comic book movie, this is a comic book show, this is a comic fiction trauma.

[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't want folks to just regulate it and say, ah, it's a comic book, you know, at an early age.

[00:22:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, clearly.

[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think that's one of the cool things that I found was that just knowing that the outer, outer wrapper of this is in a comic superhero world.

[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_04]: But I'm so down on the level of one-on-one with Oswald and his rise.

[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't even care that he's the penguin.

[00:22:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Right, right?

[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Don't care.

[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_04]: They've got all kinds of stuff where his foot and how he walks and the look on his face, all plays into that.

[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_04]: But beyond that, this is a very intense mob story, right?

[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, a crime family story.

[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_04]: So let's talk a little bit about Os.

[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_04]: And maybe just talk about it.

[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Some of the few things that we enjoyed from Colin Ferrell's depiction, and then also just the story was going,

[00:23:13] [SPEAKER_04]: like I said before, I cannot detect Colin Ferrell on screen.

[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a really incredible performance.

[00:23:20] [SPEAKER_04]: And one of the things that grabbed me two things, like right on top of each other, three things.

[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_04]: That grabbed me, right on top of each other,

[00:23:30] [SPEAKER_04]: was when he shoots Alberto Falcone, right? That's unexpected.

[00:23:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Boom, so whoa, we get that.

[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Then it's the transition of his laughing face.

[00:23:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Like, ha ha ha, I got you to, oh shit.

[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_04]: What did I just do?

[00:23:52] [SPEAKER_04]: And what am I going to have to do to clean all of this up is that it takes place in a moment

[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_04]: on his face.

[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_04]: But it is so telling.

[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_04]: And then boom, they hit us with that violin and that cut to the title card.

[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_04]: So everything we need to know about Os is presented to us in that cold open.

[00:24:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And I don't know, I'm just, I'm so intrigued because I'm coming to this cold.

[00:24:19] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm so intrigued by this story.

[00:24:22] [SPEAKER_04]: And the thing that they're building with, another thing.

[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_04]: He's carrying the body down the stairs and he's like,

[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, the carries the body all the way down the stairs.

[00:24:32] [SPEAKER_04]: So he throws it down the stairs.

[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's like, oh, work smarter, not harder, right?

[00:24:37] [SPEAKER_04]: So there's all this subtle character building that's happening right at the very beginning.

[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know. I'm, I'm floored by what they're able to build here.

[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_01]: It's, it's amazing. It's amazing. And I will say this version of Os of the penguin.

[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_01]: He is in the comics most of the time, if not all the time,

[00:25:02] [SPEAKER_01]: he's displayed as having come from wealth, right?

[00:25:05] [SPEAKER_01]: He's this figure and because of his money,

[00:25:10] [SPEAKER_01]: he's able to form this persona, right?

[00:25:16] [SPEAKER_01]: He's able to build himself up because of his wealth in the crime under the world.

[00:25:23] [SPEAKER_01]: And this show, he is the void of that.

[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't look like he comes from any wealthy beginnings.

[00:25:32] [SPEAKER_01]: It looks very humble. It looks like he was always someone who was looked down on,

[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_01]: not just because of the physical but because of where he came from, right?

[00:25:45] [SPEAKER_01]: But if you're driving around a plummouserati, you're showing off.

[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, you are showing off. I've arrived.

[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, there are a lot of gangsters that when they get that money,

[00:26:03] [SPEAKER_01]: what the first thing that they do is get something to let you know.

[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not that guy anymore. I've arrived.

[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Right? And that's what he's doing.

[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_01]: This entire first episode is him saying, I've arrived.

[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_01]: And there's nothing anyone is going to stop me from showing you,

[00:26:28] [SPEAKER_01]: showing the world that I'm here. He's really firmly planted in that.

[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's great to see because we have a lot of wealthy,

[00:26:39] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, protagonist and antagonists in films and movies of the comic book,

[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_01]: of comic book nature. Right? I'm happy to see this villain who is hard-scrabble from the streets.

[00:26:55] [SPEAKER_01]: His mom is like, yo, did I teach you to be this way?

[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_01]: What are you doing? We're talking about that, but I'm just saying his mom is like,

[00:27:05] [SPEAKER_01]: yo, what are you talking about?

[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, it's so real. I'm sorry, it's so real.

[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, you heard the people say sometimes, man,

[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I got into a fight. I'm away home.

[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Now it's crying. And then my mom and my pop looked at me and said,

[00:27:29] [SPEAKER_01]: why crying? It was like, oh, you got beat up. I got beat up.

[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And I stopped crying. Go back outside, pick up something and beat that kid up.

[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I've heard those stories. You know, I've heard those stories.

[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Like, stop crying, put on your sneakers and then go back outside and don't come back inside until that kid is crying.

[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_01]: What his mom is to like the 1000th degree.

[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_01]: She's over the top. She's over the top and making sure that he doesn't take any slides.

[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_04]: So, and this is really interesting and creates this extra dimension around his character

[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_04]: because one of the things that they layer in is the fact that he had brothers.

[00:28:19] [SPEAKER_04]: And we see the family photographs. We see the photographs in his apartment.

[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_04]: We see the photographs that his mom's house.

[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Interesting side note. His bedroom is inside of a safe.

[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_04]: So all of this is signaling to me that here's a guy who grew up with a rich,

[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_04]: and he talks about the slushies and the slush puppies and all that in nostalgia.

[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_04]: So here's a guy that grew up with a rich social background.

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_04]: And now what is he? He's alone. He's ambitious and he's alone.

[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_04]: And he sleeps behind a vault.

[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_04]: And the only thing he has left is his mother.

[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_04]: So like, I'm instantly questioned where are his brothers?

[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_04]: What happened to them? What happened in that story?

[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Right? Super interesting. Then he meets Vic.

[00:29:07] [SPEAKER_04]: And he sees something in Vic through a whole bunch of different signaling.

[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, through a sort of a stutter, young kid.

[00:29:14] [SPEAKER_04]: A kid who's willing to actually speak up for himself and not just turn around

[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_04]: and look at the sunset, but he's actually going to try to argue back

[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_04]: and stand as ground a little bit.

[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_04]: What that tells me about Oswald is that he's also very lonely.

[00:29:33] [SPEAKER_04]: He's alone in this world.

[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_04]: He's going to do what he's got to do, but he misses that companionship.

[00:29:40] [SPEAKER_04]: He misses having that familial connection with other people.

[00:29:48] [SPEAKER_04]: And so I thought that this idea of bringing Vic in so we can kind of pivot to him now

[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_04]: is such an interesting character because it gives us an audience as the audience.

[00:29:58] [SPEAKER_04]: An entry into this world and we can, you know, Vic can be our explorer

[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_04]: and our eyes into what's going on.

[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_04]: But at the same time, he is his own character in this.

[00:30:10] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think we're going to see an incredible arc of him going from this kid

[00:30:14] [SPEAKER_04]: who's also lost everything into what?

[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know where they're going to take Vic.

[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know what his moral arc is going to be.

[00:30:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And that's exciting. Right? That's interesting.

[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_04]: They're going to go someplace with this kid that I don't know what is going to happen.

[00:30:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I was scared for him from jump.

[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_01]: From the very beginning, I was like, oh man, he's not going to last.

[00:30:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I can't run. I can't run.

[00:30:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Check out the sunset, my boy.

[00:30:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god.

[00:30:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I was so scared for him.

[00:30:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I was so scared for him because immediately I wanted him to survive.

[00:30:54] [SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean? I wanted him to survive.

[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_01]: And up until the end of the episode, I was afraid for his life.

[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Because I'd never knew what I was thinking about him.

[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Because this is some guy who could be nice but in the snap,

[00:31:17] [SPEAKER_01]: my change is opinion.

[00:31:20] Yep.

[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_01]: And I was waiting for the change of opinion and it didn't happen.

[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_01]: And that was unexpected.

[00:31:29] [SPEAKER_01]: That was unexpected.

[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_04]: There was a scene.

[00:31:33] [SPEAKER_04]: I think it was the department at Penguin's apartment.

[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_04]: When he's looking at a picture of Oswald with his brothers,

[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_04]: and then the way that they racked focus is they then focus on the reflection of Vic on the glass.

[00:31:52] [SPEAKER_04]: So we're seeing the photo and then suddenly Vic's face appears on top of the photo.

[00:32:01] [SPEAKER_04]: And what?

[00:32:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, just like okay, that's some really interesting signaling that they're doing right there.

[00:32:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Right? What are they telling us about this relationship between where we're going to go with this relationship?

[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_01]: In the comics Oswald kills his brothers.

[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Because they were his number one beliefs.

[00:32:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, all right.

[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_04]: So we're going to see something.

[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't know.

[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just saying he killed me.

[00:32:32] [SPEAKER_01]: That's why we don't see his brothers.

[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_04]: But again, this is different world.

[00:32:36] [SPEAKER_01]: This is a different world.

[00:32:38] [SPEAKER_01]: This is the elsewhere.

[00:32:39] [SPEAKER_01]: This is the elsewhere.

[00:32:41] [SPEAKER_01]: But it's interesting that the way that he meets Vic is the way that that man meets the second Robin.

[00:32:49] [SPEAKER_04]: I didn't think about that.

[00:32:50] [SPEAKER_04]: That's interesting.

[00:32:51] [SPEAKER_04]: This is kind of a Batman and Robin kind of thing, right?

[00:32:55] [SPEAKER_04]: He's got his sidekick, master apprentice.

[00:33:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Wolf and Kyle.

[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_01]: The same exact way.

[00:33:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Jason Todd, who became the second Robin was trying to steal the tires off of the bathroom.

[00:33:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so that's good because they know that means that they understand where the source material that they are coming from.

[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:33:20] [SPEAKER_04]: And then taking little bits of those things and then folding them in so that's a little wink and a nod.

[00:33:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, we know what we're doing.

[00:33:26] [SPEAKER_04]: We're seeing that a lot in rings of power.

[00:33:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Where they're dropping a line in or a character or somebody does something or says something.

[00:33:33] [SPEAKER_04]: And from other parts of the lore and that just feels like, okay, right?

[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_01]: So that was a cool little thing, a little signal when I watched it.

[00:33:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, wow, okay.

[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_01]: This is a Batman and Robin thing here, but I will still a free film.

[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll still a free film even though I saw the Batman and Robin and I know Batman would never harm Robin.

[00:33:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just like, woo, I don't know about this one.

[00:33:57] [SPEAKER_01]: But this is the other side of the coin.

[00:33:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Right, exactly.

[00:34:00] [SPEAKER_04]: This is literally the other side of the coin.

[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_04]: So anything else on Bickard do we want to talk a little bit about Sofia?

[00:34:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just want to shout out Mr. Felice because my man is never great job.

[00:34:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Excuse me, he did a great, great, great job.

[00:34:18] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I was drawn into his character and just, you know,

[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_01]: when someone would just comes on screen and I'm immediately like,

[00:34:29] [SPEAKER_01]: hoping for the best for you, that means something.

[00:34:33] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, that means something in your portrayal that you've already got me like saying,

[00:34:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I hope this guy makes it.

[00:34:41] [SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?

[00:34:42] [SPEAKER_01]: So he, great job by him, great job by him.

[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_04]: He's just did a quick check on his credits.

[00:34:49] [SPEAKER_04]: He doesn't have a deep background.

[00:34:53] [SPEAKER_04]: So for him to be standing toe to toe with Colin Ferrell and a whole bunch of other,

[00:35:01] [SPEAKER_04]: you know, hardworking actors who all have good established histories.

[00:35:07] [SPEAKER_04]: And then to be delivering up performance like he was doing when Oswald had the gun in his face

[00:35:13] [SPEAKER_04]: right at the beginning.

[00:35:16] [SPEAKER_04]: The fear was palpable.

[00:35:20] [SPEAKER_04]: What would I, and I put myself instantly in that position of what if a guy that looked like this on a

[00:35:27] [SPEAKER_04]: street like that?

[00:35:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

[00:35:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Had a gun in my face and I had that moment of, is he going to, you know,

[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_04]: he hasn't shot me yet but he's about to the fear, the palpable fear that was coming through

[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_04]: was an incredible performance and absolutely deeply emotional.

[00:35:49] [SPEAKER_04]: And then a couple of other times where, you know, just his look on his face like,

[00:35:54] [SPEAKER_04]: oh, wow.

[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_04]: This is how the other, you know, how are there parts of society live or when he's like,

[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_04]: oh, you know, who's that guy?

[00:36:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, he's, is he a nurse?

[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_04]: No, no, no, he's got nurse qualities but he's like, no, really I'm this kid.

[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm nice.

[00:36:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Don't worry about it and he's trying to, you know, just really an actor who's in control of his body

[00:36:16] [SPEAKER_04]: and it is emotions in a way to deliver those performances at this stage of his career.

[00:36:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Bravo.

[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Bravo.

[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Definitely.

[00:36:25] [SPEAKER_04]: So let's talk a little bit about Chris and Melody and Sophia because what that is going on,

[00:36:34] [SPEAKER_04]: I love her so much.

[00:36:37] [SPEAKER_04]: The moment she appears in white behind the penguin at the meeting with the family,

[00:36:45] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, who is this angel?

[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh wait a minute, she's got an angel.

[00:36:50] [SPEAKER_01]: She just got out of a desilot.

[00:36:53] [SPEAKER_04]: No, she's got out of art.

[00:36:55] [SPEAKER_04]: No way.

[00:36:56] [SPEAKER_04]: No.

[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_04]: And then the way that she says I've been rehabilitated and sort of blinks her eyes and and her eyes

[00:37:02] [SPEAKER_04]: sort of catch her bangs a little bit and just what an amazing performance.

[00:37:08] [SPEAKER_04]: What an amazing performance.

[00:37:10] [SPEAKER_04]: What do we, so the hangman?

[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_04]: That's an interesting monocros, interesting subject K for this character.

[00:37:15] [SPEAKER_04]: What do I kind of need to know from the movie without really spoiling the movie?

[00:37:21] [SPEAKER_04]: She's not really a story.

[00:37:24] [SPEAKER_01]: She's not really in the Batman.

[00:37:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, all right, good.

[00:37:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is her really, this is the first real exposition of her as a character.

[00:37:36] [SPEAKER_01]: On screen.

[00:37:38] [SPEAKER_01]: So what you're learning about her is what you're going to learn about.

[00:37:42] [SPEAKER_01]: What?

[00:37:43] [SPEAKER_04]: And that's an, it's interesting because they are hinting that she has a history with as well.

[00:37:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:37:50] [SPEAKER_04]: And that he did something that caused her to end up being or played a part in her being committed.

[00:38:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe who knows?

[00:38:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, because she said, he, there was a line I wish I'd wrote it down.

[00:38:05] [SPEAKER_04]: He said he did something.

[00:38:06] [SPEAKER_04]: He said, oh, you know what it, I wish I could remember.

[00:38:09] [SPEAKER_04]: But there was something that that flagged the fact that he was engaged in some, in some way of her her commit all.

[00:38:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this is so many layers, so many layers.

[00:38:22] [SPEAKER_01]: But again, I'm ready to learn what it is that he did, right?

[00:38:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Like her performance was scary as all fucks.

[00:38:35] [SPEAKER_01]: It was, she was just radiating like murderous energy.

[00:38:42] [SPEAKER_01]: You know what?

[00:38:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Like serial killer energy.

[00:38:46] [SPEAKER_01]: That's what she gave off.

[00:38:48] [SPEAKER_01]: And someone who is trying to stay in control.

[00:38:53] [SPEAKER_01]: But you can see in her eyes that at any moment, she can lose control.

[00:39:01] [SPEAKER_04]: And what that would mean for you, much like us.

[00:39:04] [SPEAKER_04]: And you know, when they show it to us is when they're at the dinner scene.

[00:39:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And she's scarfing down the food and knocking back her drinks.

[00:39:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Her appetites are larger than her frame, her body size would allow you to realize.

[00:39:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think from some of the trailers, we're going to get a little flashback to her time in in Arkham.

[00:39:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes. And she already told you what there was like when they were torturing you know us.

[00:39:37] [SPEAKER_01]: So it could have been pretty.

[00:39:38] [SPEAKER_04]: No, and she's doing to, uh,

[00:39:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Oz, what was done to her and she actually describes that.

[00:39:45] [SPEAKER_04]: So, all right, uh, any other thoughts?

[00:39:49] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I know we could do, we had spent probably another hour just taking the show apart.

[00:39:53] [SPEAKER_04]: But I, uh, I feel like that is about what I can say without going in without putting on the deep sea diving suit in the,

[00:40:01] [SPEAKER_04]: going down to the depths.

[00:40:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this is, um, yeah, just watch it.

[00:40:10] [SPEAKER_01]: For those of you out there who are listening, who haven't watched it yet and looking for a reason to watch it.

[00:40:16] [SPEAKER_01]: This is your reason.

[00:40:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Hmm. It's just awesome.

[00:40:21] [SPEAKER_01]: It's an awesome first episode.

[00:40:23] [SPEAKER_01]: There's nothing else to be said about it.

[00:40:25] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's worth your time. I think it's worth your investment and hopefully, you know, the following episodes continue to build on what we've had so far in this first one.

[00:40:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Right. Right.

[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Cool. Okay. Well, let's, let's wrap it up a couple of quick shoutouts before we wrap up.

[00:40:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Remember if you like to write, uh, we have a blog.

[00:40:51] [SPEAKER_04]: We have an open submission policy. If you go to the lorhounds.com and go to the blog page, there's a post on there that explains our submission process.

[00:41:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Brian 863, our editor and chief will be happy to take your posts and work with you to get them put up. You don't have to do anything except basically send us an article.

[00:41:11] [SPEAKER_04]: To, uh, our affiliates really quick. Never mind the music is our latest podcast to join the lorhounds network.

[00:41:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Amazing stuff. Mark and Nicole Mark is a music professor and Nicole is a psychology professor.

[00:41:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And they take songs and they break them down about how the melodic structures work, but then they talk about something like grief or young collective unconsciousness.

[00:41:39] [SPEAKER_04]: And how they interrelate. They did a really great episode the other day on, on cover songs that was a really fascinating.

[00:41:49] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know, John, if you've had a chance to check them out.

[00:41:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I have. It's really, uh, it's really fun.

[00:41:57] [SPEAKER_01]: It's super cool.

[00:41:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. There's a new one that I need to check out from this week, but yeah, they listen to it. It's so informative and they give you so much information and such a cool laidback type of way.

[00:42:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.

[00:42:15] [SPEAKER_04]: I think coming up is true by Spandau Ballet and the money notes of a middle school dance. That's an interesting topic that's going to be,

[00:42:26] [SPEAKER_04]: And then I think episode seven looks like they're going to talk a little Stevie Wonder. So that's going to be.

[00:42:32] [SPEAKER_04]: That should be fun.

[00:42:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. That should be fun.

[00:42:34] [SPEAKER_04]: I believe that we've got some fallout lore coming. I know AJ, I think message us and let us know that we've got something coming up.

[00:42:44] [SPEAKER_04]: You and Alicia, what are you guys got cooking?

[00:42:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, so we're covering out of the all along.

[00:42:50] [SPEAKER_01]: That's right.

[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_01]: And you'll be starting off good with two episodes.

[00:42:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. Thank you.

[00:42:56] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a great, great show. Like Alicia said in our voice mail to comic book adaptations that are markedly different.

[00:43:03] [SPEAKER_01]: It's exciting to have that in the same season.

[00:43:07] [SPEAKER_01]: So yes.

[00:43:08] [SPEAKER_01]: We're looking forward to continuing with that.

[00:43:10] [SPEAKER_01]: We have the DC universe looking forward towards creature commando's, which is coming out at the end of this year.

[00:43:17] [SPEAKER_01]: We have the comics versus where if you go, I give you my weekly comic picks from all the polls that I get.

[00:43:25] [SPEAKER_01]: And we talk all things comic DC marvel and things of that nature.

[00:43:31] [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, that's not coming.

[00:43:34] [SPEAKER_04]: We also are wrapping up our rings of power coverage.

[00:43:37] [SPEAKER_04]: We're about to record our episode seven, which will drop later this week.

[00:43:43] [SPEAKER_04]: And along with our subscriber only lore cast where each week, Marilyn and John and I go deep on a particular topic.

[00:43:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Last week, Marilyn and I should be out the morning of this recording.

[00:43:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Marilyn and I spend about an hour talking about orcs and the difference between orcs and urukes is the show is showing us.

[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_04]: And talking about the morality of having an only evil race that is you can exterminate without guilt or fear.

[00:44:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And how that's not really the truth of the matter and what Tolkien struggled with with you know is is there redemption if somebody is part of creation and you know created by.

[00:44:28] [SPEAKER_04]: This higher being at least in in that world, you know, can you have somebody that.

[00:44:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Can't be redeemed so it's a it's a really fascinating conversation.

[00:44:37] [SPEAKER_04]: And other than that, I think coming up in the fall.

[00:44:40] [SPEAKER_04]: We've got silo headed out coming out and we've got doom prophecy and so are and we've got a couple of special projects.

[00:44:49] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm going to be doing a 50th anniversary Star Trek, the Motion Picture podcast and I think we're going to try and do something for the 50th anniversary of Dungeons and Dragons.

[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_04]: We've got poltergeists, the whole franchise coming out for our spooktober plan so far too much to try and keep track of or to try to grab into the end of this podcast.

[00:45:11] [SPEAKER_04]: So I'm going to wrap that there and then just a quick shout out to our discord server boosters.

So we threw this together real quick and that will look forward to Alicia joining us on future coverage once we settle out for what's going on because you guys are going to be busy a little bit with Agatha so.
