00:00 --> 00:09 [SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody, David here with a little bonus episode from our friends over at Captain's pod.
00:10 --> 00:20 [SPEAKER_01]: As you might know, they are doing full episode to episode coverage of the new Star Trek series Starfleet Academy.
00:20 --> 00:33 [SPEAKER_01]: and in and in a have already out on their main feeds, two parts for one episode each for the double drop of the new season.
00:33 --> 00:40 [SPEAKER_01]: We did a season preview a little while back with them and then when they were
00:40 --> 00:44 [SPEAKER_01]: They said, oh, hey, let's do a little encapsulation.
00:44 --> 00:48 [SPEAKER_01]: Let's sort of put a little message capsule together for the folks over at the lower hounds.
00:48 --> 00:53 [SPEAKER_01]: So they recorded that, they're calling it warp nine, which is kind of a fun little play.
00:53 --> 00:58 [SPEAKER_01]: And it's about 10 minutes of their initial reactions after watching episode one.
00:58 --> 00:59 [SPEAKER_01]: It's pretty fun.
00:59 --> 01:00 [SPEAKER_01]: So check it out.
01:01 --> 01:05 [SPEAKER_01]: And then go check out their full coverage of both episodes one and two.
01:05 --> 01:07 [SPEAKER_01]: And then they'll be going weekly after that.
01:07 --> 01:13 [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, go check them out, and thanks everyone, live long and pod spur.
01:31 --> 01:34 [SPEAKER_00]: Hey, Lorehound's, it's Captain, that's him.
01:34 --> 01:52 [SPEAKER_00]: Hi, and me, I'm Danay, and we recently tried it with David about the new Star Trek show Starfleet Academy, and we just finished watching it, and we just finished recording our very first episode about this new series, and we thought we would tell you, our quick thoughts, in maybe 10 minutes or less.
01:52 --> 01:53 [SPEAKER_02]: We're going to try it.
01:53 --> 01:58 [SPEAKER_02]: We're going to try and do a little bit of a non-spolar overview and then we'll give you some spoilery thoughts towards the end.
01:58 --> 02:00 [SPEAKER_02]: So this is like a captain's pod.
02:00 --> 02:01 [SPEAKER_02]: Deep reef.
02:01 --> 02:02 [SPEAKER_02]: But deep reef.
02:02 --> 02:03 [SPEAKER_02]: A briefed reef.
02:03 --> 02:09 [SPEAKER_02]: It's a captain's pod log, low hand supplemental breathing.
02:09 --> 02:12 [SPEAKER_00]: Boiler alerts again at the end we will tell you when we get to that point.
02:12 --> 02:15 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we'll do a little like a little bit of a healing frequency for you.
02:15 --> 02:19 [SPEAKER_00]: But first, we really did enjoy the first episode.
02:19 --> 02:22 [SPEAKER_00]: Like quite a lot more than we thought we would.
02:22 --> 02:26 [SPEAKER_00]: And so here are some of our non-spoiler thoughts.
02:26 --> 02:29 [SPEAKER_00]: First of all, it's a very visually exciting episode.
02:29 --> 02:38 [SPEAKER_00]: We see sets and planets and action sequences more of all of that than I actually thought.
02:39 --> 02:58 [SPEAKER_00]: All the aliens are a really unique blend because we're so far in the future in the Star Trek world than what they've made so far that they've been able to kind of blend different things together and during our episode we talk about how those blending of aliens together makes the characters make even more sense as to why they're being acted the way that they're being acted.
02:58 --> 03:01 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was one of the most interesting things I was looking forward to.
03:01 --> 03:05 [SPEAKER_02]: So I am super happy to see episode one immediately delivered on that.
03:05 --> 03:07 [SPEAKER_02]: Wasn't even a promise, but it was like an expectation.
03:07 --> 03:12 [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, if you're going to be this far into the future, won't it aren't you exploring how species have merged?
03:12 --> 03:15 [SPEAKER_00]: But the setter fun and the CGI is fun visually.
03:16 --> 03:19 [SPEAKER_00]: It was a really stunning kind of experience and there is action in it.
03:19 --> 03:24 [SPEAKER_00]: I thought it might be a bit boring, but it was actually really fun action sequences.
03:24 --> 03:28 [SPEAKER_00]: So we just want you to know that.
03:28 --> 03:35 [SPEAKER_02]: The action, I know that's not what you really come to Star Trek 4 necessarily, but the action is extremely well-cory, and we're pretty easy to follow.
03:35 --> 03:35 [SPEAKER_02]: We thought.
03:35 --> 03:36 [SPEAKER_02]: I thought.
03:37 --> 03:48 [SPEAKER_02]: Um, pleasantly surprised, like Star Trek has not been known for doing, fight choreography very well, but, um, yeah, this episode, this pilot was very, very pleasantly surprising.
03:48 --> 03:54 [SPEAKER_00]: So if you decide to watch it on your own and maybe listen to our episode, you'll definitely hear more about that.
03:54 --> 03:59 [SPEAKER_00]: But we're going to shift over into some spoilers, so if you want to hear a little bit more about what you can expect.
04:00 --> 04:04 [SPEAKER_00]: And again, they're going to be lighter spoilers, but with some specifics that we were really excited about keep listening.
04:05 --> 04:16 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, first up, we really want you to know that the Academy, the Starfleet Academy, is all happening on a ship that is both the ship and the Academy in one night.
04:16 --> 04:18 [SPEAKER_02]: The USS Athena returns into a building.
04:19 --> 04:20 [SPEAKER_00]: It's pretty insolent.
04:21 --> 04:22 [SPEAKER_02]: It's like a treasure ship.
04:22 --> 04:23 [SPEAKER_02]: It's like a treasure ship.
04:23 --> 04:24 [SPEAKER_02]: It's a transformer.
04:24 --> 04:25 [SPEAKER_00]: But it looks really, really neat.
04:25 --> 04:30 [SPEAKER_00]: So you kind of get to see what the future of Star Trek could be where the ships aren't.
04:31 --> 04:32 [SPEAKER_00]: So like, this is what the ship is.
04:33 --> 04:34 [SPEAKER_00]: It only comes apart in these two places.
04:35 --> 04:35 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
04:35 --> 04:37 [SPEAKER_00]: Suddenly, it's like, has it a full separation?
04:37 --> 04:38 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
04:38 --> 04:39 [SPEAKER_00]: It has wings and all this stuff.
04:40 --> 04:41 [SPEAKER_00]: And the sets of them are really, really pretty.
04:41 --> 04:45 [SPEAKER_00]: But it exteriorally, we get to see some incredible shots of the ship.
04:45 --> 04:49 [SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, the academy that we're talking about can be in two places.
04:49 --> 04:50 [SPEAKER_00]: It's not just a building on Earth.
04:51 --> 04:52 [SPEAKER_00]: It can also go into space.
04:52 --> 04:53 [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's really smart.
04:53 --> 04:58 [SPEAKER_02]: Like, I think when I first heard Starfleet Academy was going to be a thing, it was like, oh, you're going to be on earth.
04:58 --> 05:01 [SPEAKER_02]: And then how are you going to shoehorn space adventure into that.
05:01 --> 05:08 [SPEAKER_02]: So I think it's really, really smart to make a thinner and integral part of the Starfleet Academy.
05:08 --> 05:24 [SPEAKER_00]: Also spoiler alert the cadet element where we kind of thought it was going to be a bit like the breakfast club it isn't exactly like that There are some parts of it that are definitely what you expect when you're trying to put new characters together But it didn't cliche so hard that it was eye rolling.
05:25 --> 05:32 [SPEAKER_00]: It was actually kind of done with a right amount of humor Yeah, and sort of unexpected character development the first episode by the way is over an hour.
05:32 --> 05:36 [SPEAKER_00]: So they have kind of a time to do this
05:36 --> 05:43 [SPEAKER_00]: Um, but we really enjoyed some of the actual like characters and that was one of our concerns and we talked about it with David, but we kind of enjoyed it.
05:43 --> 05:53 [SPEAKER_02]: The central character Caleb, um, this is really like he'd into his story, the opening is very much about his traumatic upbringing, his relation to Starfleet.
05:53 --> 05:56 [SPEAKER_02]: We're very much seeing this from his point of view.
05:56 --> 06:00 [SPEAKER_02]: And one of the things I love is that it actually made it very focused and human.
06:00 --> 06:17 [SPEAKER_02]: story in relatable story and gave us a person to ground into as are introduced to the far far future of Star Trek, because this is happening about 800 years after TNG if you're a Star Trek fan the Picard era of Star Trek.
06:18 --> 06:27 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and then I mean, just in the show itself, meeting just this character Caleb and sort of centralizing on him makes it easier when the rest of the cast is introduced and it is a diverse cast.
06:27 --> 06:37 [SPEAKER_00]: We have a lot of people to focus on, but the episode, we think did a good job of giving us enough character information that even though there's lots of new faces and new people, etc.
06:40 --> 06:45 [SPEAKER_00]: etc.
06:45 --> 06:51 [SPEAKER_00]: New word maybe to me but not really new because this is a hologram character.
06:51 --> 06:52 [SPEAKER_00]: What are the cadets?
06:52 --> 06:53 [SPEAKER_00]: Is a hologram?
06:53 --> 07:03 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, this is adorable Sam who just has all of the nervous energy and is I guess you'd say that the the kind of newer divergent S kind of character
07:03 --> 07:04 [SPEAKER_00]: How like, no, no.
07:05 --> 07:09 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it doesn't know how to interact with everybody, but it's just so, so fun to watch.
07:09 --> 07:12 [SPEAKER_02]: And yes, she is a hologram prefers to be called a photonic.
07:12 --> 07:15 [SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, she was, we've really connected with her.
07:15 --> 07:16 [SPEAKER_02]: She's great.
07:16 --> 07:24 [SPEAKER_00]: If you've seen a Star Trek before, the familiarity of this character is kind of like a data also where they're kind of just amazed to be there.
07:24 --> 07:27 [SPEAKER_00]: And a participant in the great experience.
07:27 --> 07:33 [SPEAKER_02]: There's a study humanity, very much a thing we've seen before in Star Trek, but I think it's a crucial element of a good Star Trek show as well.
07:33 --> 07:39 [SPEAKER_00]: They do make this show feel new kind of through their eyes too, so a really fun character to introduce.
07:40 --> 07:46 [SPEAKER_00]: Another character is a clean-on that is passive, so kind of subvert in the idea that all clean-ons are based on war.
07:47 --> 07:53 [SPEAKER_00]: This one is warring with that idea by being really, really intense about bioengineering.
07:54 --> 07:56 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, regenerating limbs.
07:56 --> 08:00 [SPEAKER_00]: but also a very intimidating looking character, that's a fun one too.
08:00 --> 08:07 [SPEAKER_02]: In a very traditional claim on as well, this isn't like the discovery claim on, like this is more a claim on that you would expect from.
08:07 --> 08:07 [SPEAKER_02]: Visually.
08:08 --> 08:10 [SPEAKER_02]: Visually from the TNT area, yes.
08:10 --> 08:14 [SPEAKER_00]: Another character, one that you might know, is actually the doctor hologram from Voyager.
08:14 --> 08:36 [SPEAKER_00]: Don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn, don't turn
08:36 --> 08:39 [SPEAKER_00]: And it is the same program that was the one in Voyager.
08:39 --> 08:43 [SPEAKER_00]: So the actor playing this role gets to pull from a lot of knowledge.
08:43 --> 08:45 [SPEAKER_00]: And we talk about that in our show proper.
08:45 --> 08:46 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I love him.
08:46 --> 08:47 [SPEAKER_02]: So I really, really worked.
08:47 --> 08:49 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, his return was excellent.
08:49 --> 08:50 [SPEAKER_00]: The last character is a lanternite.
08:50 --> 08:52 [SPEAKER_00]: This is another character that has longevity.
08:53 --> 08:55 [SPEAKER_00]: The idea of, you know, people living for a long time.
08:55 --> 09:00 [SPEAKER_00]: They can kind of look at the history of Star Trek and make better decisions for the first for the future.
09:00 --> 09:02 [SPEAKER_00]: And this is the captain of the show.
09:02 --> 09:04 [SPEAKER_00]: Play by Holly Hunter.
09:04 --> 09:09 [SPEAKER_02]: Probably by Holy Hunter, Captain Nala, a Kayuraki, I'll have to, I can't quite remember.
09:09 --> 09:15 [SPEAKER_00]: Don't ask me because during the episode, I call her Captain Kitty and you'll find out why if you listen to the show.
09:15 --> 09:16 [SPEAKER_02]: Yep, she's incredible.
09:16 --> 09:17 [SPEAKER_02]: Love her.
09:17 --> 09:19 [SPEAKER_02]: We should also talk about the villain as well.
09:19 --> 09:21 [SPEAKER_02]: No, no, no, no, no.
09:21 --> 09:29 [SPEAKER_02]: Yep, Nus Bracker, who is part-tellerite part-cling on eating up scenery, a very over-the-top villain.
09:29 --> 09:31 [SPEAKER_02]: But kind of works as well.
09:31 --> 09:39 [SPEAKER_02]: We think, I think, I'm still a little bit on the fence, but I did enjoy watching his villain just dialogue his way through everything.
09:39 --> 09:46 [SPEAKER_02]: That's the really important characters other than an incredible cadet master gem Hada Lady who is just a flipping highlight.
09:46 --> 09:47 [SPEAKER_00]: Stop talking about everything.
09:47 --> 09:48 [SPEAKER_00]: I love her so much.
09:48 --> 09:49 [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry characters are so great.
09:50 --> 09:51 [SPEAKER_00]: Now we're going to try to keep it short.
09:52 --> 09:53 [SPEAKER_02]: That's the characters.
09:54 --> 09:58 [SPEAKER_02]: What happens kind of in the meat and potato of the episode ambassador?
09:59 --> 10:04 [SPEAKER_00]: I think I'm going to pretend like maybe this is the only thing you'll ever find out about the first episode of Starfleet again.
10:04 --> 10:10 [SPEAKER_00]: And try to kind of boil it down just in case you might be interested in the story and maybe you want to get started on this particular show with us.
10:11 --> 10:21 [SPEAKER_00]: For me, what I would say is that this is going to be a story about trying to reclaim what Star Trek, what Starfleet maybe was in its best days.
10:21 --> 10:34 [SPEAKER_00]: And Star Trek has been playing around with different kinds of shows and different ways of telling the story within the Star Trek universe and sometimes you got a bit dark and sometimes you got a bit away from sort of like maybe the ideal of what Starfleet could be.
10:35 --> 10:41 [SPEAKER_00]: And this show is going to attempt to get it back on the rails and sort of restart or re-kick its heyday, right?
10:41 --> 10:47 [SPEAKER_00]: Read that passion for what it means to build a better future, and we're getting to do that with a new cast.
10:47 --> 10:52 [SPEAKER_00]: And like we have already said, we really enjoyed the chemistry of the cast, so it's exciting.
10:52 --> 10:54 [SPEAKER_00]: And our characters are going to have a diverse background.
10:55 --> 10:57 [SPEAKER_00]: They're going to be the anti-hero a little bit.
10:57 --> 10:58 [SPEAKER_00]: There's going to be
10:58 --> 11:02 [SPEAKER_00]: you know, just sort of rivalry amongst them and genius amongst them sort of in this world.
11:03 --> 11:10 [SPEAKER_00]: So really what you need to know is that you're going to watch this episode, it's going to be fun because it's like an action adventure and you can walk away going, okay, I'm done.
11:10 --> 11:11 [SPEAKER_00]: I don't need to see any more.
11:11 --> 11:16 [SPEAKER_00]: But what we're expecting is that this is sort of the beginning of the next generation.
11:17 --> 11:20 [SPEAKER_00]: What the hell is such a touch person?
11:20 --> 11:20 [SPEAKER_02]: No, no, I'm not sure.
11:20 --> 11:21 [SPEAKER_02]: They've already done that.
11:23 --> 11:26 [SPEAKER_00]: Of what Star Trek is going to look like, you know, being made in 2026.
11:26 --> 11:38 [SPEAKER_02]: It's definitely setting the tone of Starfleet went through a dark period, and here's the optimism of the future, which I think is really smart because Star Trek has always been this optimistic view of the future.
11:38 --> 11:39 [SPEAKER_02]: That was the goal.
11:39 --> 11:44 [SPEAKER_02]: And I think this first episode really sets that tone well.
11:44 --> 11:47 [SPEAKER_02]: It has the dark element of Caleb's upbringing.
11:47 --> 11:49 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it shows us what Starfleet messed up.
11:49 --> 11:57 [SPEAKER_00]: Starfleet essentially separated a mother and a son from each other, and that made both of their lives just spin out in this terrible way.
11:58 --> 12:04 [SPEAKER_00]: And the captain regrets that decision and has a chance to write it again 15 years later.
12:04 --> 12:13 [SPEAKER_00]: And so taking that child that was ripped away from the mother and acclimating them into what Starfleet could become through this academy.
12:13 --> 12:20 [SPEAKER_00]: and that sort of like the beginning launching point, but all of the characters that are in Starfleet are the Academy and they're kind of joining.
12:21 --> 12:22 [SPEAKER_00]: They all have interesting stories too.
12:22 --> 12:23 [SPEAKER_00]: We just don't know them as well.
12:23 --> 12:25 [SPEAKER_00]: Do you know Caleb's here at the first episode?
12:25 --> 12:28 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's one of the reasons I really loved this first episode.
12:28 --> 12:29 [SPEAKER_02]: It has a lot of counter moments.
12:29 --> 12:32 [SPEAKER_02]: It has a lot of Star Trek techno-bable that you'd expect.
12:32 --> 12:35 [SPEAKER_02]: It's got the space ships that are just absolutely beautiful.
12:36 --> 12:42 [SPEAKER_02]: It has a nice disaster on the ship that happens where all of the crew has to work together to get through the
12:42 --> 12:48 [SPEAKER_02]: And a nice satisfying ending to that for me, and then just a little set up for the rest of the season.
12:48 --> 12:54 [SPEAKER_02]: I was it was a really confident burst episode, a kind of ticked all the boxes for what I want from Star Trek.
12:55 --> 12:58 [SPEAKER_02]: Minus, the kind of philosophical questions.
12:58 --> 13:05 [SPEAKER_02]: There wasn't quite the moral country element, but that's definitely more keyed into like episodic Star Trek as well.
13:05 --> 13:11 [SPEAKER_02]: But in terms of this new wave of like series arc Star Trek like Discovery,
13:11 --> 13:14 [SPEAKER_02]: I think this is the best version of what Discovery was trying to be.
13:14 --> 13:15 [SPEAKER_02]: Like I really really enjoyed it.
13:16 --> 13:16 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
13:16 --> 13:21 [SPEAKER_00]: So, Jonas, for the full conversation over on Captain Jarvis, well, we recorded for three hours.
13:22 --> 13:24 [SPEAKER_00]: I hope it's not actually going to be a three hour episode.
13:24 --> 13:26 [SPEAKER_02]: Probably going to be a two and a half hour debrief.
13:26 --> 13:26 [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, boy.
13:26 --> 13:27 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's a chunky one.
13:27 --> 13:30 [SPEAKER_00]: We have a lot to discuss because we had a really good time.
13:30 --> 13:34 [SPEAKER_00]: But it's also like the foundational start of an entire series.
13:34 --> 13:34 [SPEAKER_02]: It's huge.
13:34 --> 13:40 [SPEAKER_00]: And I have a lot of questions because I don't know a lot of information about the background of the aliens.
13:40 --> 13:49 [SPEAKER_00]: And I really kind of dug into my love of how things were shot from a director's perspective, the CGI, like I kind of let my little nerd flag fly over there.
13:49 --> 13:53 [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I guess maybe it will be kind of long.
13:53 --> 13:54 [SPEAKER_00]: But this one isn't, so we hope you enjoyed it.
13:55 --> 13:57 [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for giving us a shot and giving us a chance.
13:57 --> 14:02 [SPEAKER_00]: We love you guys, and we can't wait to do some more collaborations with Laura Hauds in the future.
