Silo S3 – Inside the adaptation w/ Graham Yost & Hugh Howey

For this special Silo season 3 bonus episode, Elysia is joined by Silo series book author Hugh Howey and Silo TV showrunner Graham Yost to discuss the tricky process of TV-making and adaptation – from why worldbuilding details were changed, to how key scenes came together, to how Peter Gabriel won himself a spot in Stensen's Ark.

This episode avoids future book spoilers as usual, and saves season 4 discussion until the end of the conversation – listen to the intro for a more detailed spoiler warning.

00:25 --> 00:31 [SPEAKER_00]: Hello, and welcome to a special bonus episode of Woolshift Dust, a silo TV podcast.
00:31 --> 00:33 [SPEAKER_00]: My name is Alicia Brenner.
00:33 --> 00:51 [SPEAKER_00]: I'm here today without my usual co-host, Luke Midup, but Luke and I will still be back for two more episodes over the next week, our final Malbag episode for silo season three, and a separate episode, breaking down the first teaser for the final season, but you
00:55 --> 01:00 [SPEAKER_00]: you will hear to other voices, very special voices to silo fans.
01:00 --> 01:17 [SPEAKER_00]: You are about to hear a conversation I had with both silo book author Hugh Howie and silo TV showrunner Graham Yost who joined me together to talk about the tricky adaptation choices that went into bringing this story from page to screen.
01:17 --> 01:23 [SPEAKER_00]: with behind-the-scenes insights into how many choices were made and key scenes came together.
01:23 --> 01:30 [SPEAKER_00]: So thank you so much to both of them for their generosity with their time and their openness and sadness during this conversation.
01:31 --> 01:35 [SPEAKER_00]: We get insights into not only the adaptation process, but TV making in general.
01:36 --> 01:47 [SPEAKER_00]: Now as far as spoilers go, the usual policy applies that means that book discussion is only allowed when it relates directly to what has already aired.
01:48 --> 01:51 [SPEAKER_00]: But there are a couple special notes for this episode.
01:52 --> 01:58 [SPEAKER_00]: I did leave one suggestion of something big that happens in a silo short story in there.
01:58 --> 02:01 [SPEAKER_00]: Something that Graham Yoast mentions at one point,
02:01 --> 02:10 [SPEAKER_00]: It's, uh, if you have read the silo short stories, it's exactly the one you're thinking of, but it's again affirmed that it's not happening in this show.
02:10 --> 02:12 [SPEAKER_00]: So, um, it's not a show spoiler.
02:13 --> 02:20 [SPEAKER_00]: I did bleep another book spoiler that I mentioned, which is confirmed will be a topic in season four.
02:21 --> 02:25 [SPEAKER_00]: If you are not a book reader, you have not heard the words that I bleeped out.
02:26 --> 02:33 [SPEAKER_00]: If you are a book reader or especially if you're a book club member, then you'll likely recognize what was bleeped out.
02:34 --> 02:39 [SPEAKER_00]: But non-readers, you're safe from guessing it's something that you'll learn about next season and I will talk more about it then.
02:41 --> 02:53 [SPEAKER_00]: We of course do direct comparisons with book changes in this conversation, but of course we don't have as much time to go into the extra context of explaining the book versions of these stories here.
02:54 --> 03:02 [SPEAKER_00]: So these are all changes that I have explained in the episode breakdowns related to the TV versions of these plot points.
03:02 --> 03:06 [SPEAKER_00]: So if you're new to the podcast, you can dive into those back.
03:06 --> 03:09 [SPEAKER_00]: episodes if you want more context for some of the things that we talk about.
03:10 --> 03:18 [SPEAKER_00]: Oh and um we do openly at one point switch to talking about the season four teaser and some additional season four teases.
03:18 --> 03:26 [SPEAKER_00]: If you don't want to hear any of that then duck out when we start talking about Laura Innis right after we talk about Peter Gabriel and Colin Hanks.
03:27 --> 03:37 [SPEAKER_00]: The next episode will be Luke and I with our final mail bag of the season and that will be season four spoiler free and then the episode after that will be a deep dive into the season four trailer.
03:37 --> 03:46 [SPEAKER_00]: So if you don't want any season four teases, duck out after Peter Gabriel and see you for the mail bag then, but you're safe until them.
03:47 --> 03:48 [SPEAKER_00]: All right.
03:48 --> 03:49 [SPEAKER_00]: That's enough pre-emble.
03:49 --> 03:51 [SPEAKER_00]: Saddle up that unicorn and let's ride.
03:59 --> 04:22 [SPEAKER_00]: welcome back first i'll start with you how we author of the books of wool shift and dust after which this podcast is named we last spoke between seasons one and two so a lot's happened since then and i'm grateful to have you here to talk about it um happy to be back thank you for uh keep in the podcast going i'm grateful to grandma and apple for keeping the show going making it all possible
04:23 --> 04:30 [SPEAKER_00]: and speaking of Graham today's talk is extra exciting because you are not here alone you.
04:30 --> 04:34 [SPEAKER_00]: We are joined by the silo showrunner himself, Graham Yoast.
04:34 --> 04:35 [SPEAKER_00]: Woo!
04:35 --> 04:37 [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the bullshit dust podcast, Graham.
04:37 --> 04:38 [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you so much.
04:38 --> 04:42 [SPEAKER_03]: I usually don't get woes, so I'm very very happy to hear that.
04:43 --> 04:45 [SPEAKER_00]: welcome to TV Nerdland.
04:47 --> 04:56 [SPEAKER_00]: I'm really glad to have you both here to pick your brains because first of all just congratulations on the completion of what's in my opinion the best season yet.
04:57 --> 05:06 [SPEAKER_00]: I am myself a book reader so I knew where the memory hotline was going and so I was hooked into the episodes and intrigued from episode one.
05:07 --> 05:07 [SPEAKER_00]: But the
05:08 --> 05:15 [SPEAKER_00]: This is, yeah, especially a season that each episode was better than the last pretty much.
05:15 --> 05:20 [SPEAKER_00]: And the last two, I'm hearing lots of people calling them the episodes of the year.
05:20 --> 05:23 [SPEAKER_00]: So congratulations on pulling that off.
05:24 --> 05:25 [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you very much.
05:26 --> 05:36 [SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, that brings us to today's topic is of course the recently completed season three, but I wanted to have a special focus on the talking about the art of adaptation.
05:37 --> 05:47 [SPEAKER_00]: I know there's a lot of complications and considerations that listeners at home might not have considered when they're looking at the journey from Hughes.
05:48 --> 05:57 [SPEAKER_00]: books that were written in 2011 to 2013 to this screen story that Graham is leading and when did that when was the first season was it 2022?
05:58 --> 06:01 [SPEAKER_00]: 2022-23 maybe.
06:02 --> 06:03 [SPEAKER_03]: It came out.
06:03 --> 06:12 [SPEAKER_03]: I know we started filming it in the fall of 2021 and we went over until March of 2022 so I don't think it came out until the following year.
06:13 --> 06:13 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
06:13 --> 06:14 [SPEAKER_03]: I think we've been 23-24
06:16 --> 06:19 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was over Christmas last season, and then it's all there.
06:19 --> 06:20 [SPEAKER_03]: It all gets lost at times.
06:21 --> 06:24 [SPEAKER_03]: It's unfortunate that we've often taken the memory drugs.
06:25 --> 06:29 [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly, it's called aging, but it will pretend that it's in the water.
06:30 --> 06:31 [SPEAKER_01]: When was that first room, Grant?
06:31 --> 06:32 [SPEAKER_01]: That was before lockdown, right?
06:32 --> 06:36 [SPEAKER_03]: Like until it was, it was January 2020 here.
06:36 --> 06:39 [SPEAKER_03]: We're all hanging out and you remember someone said, hey, did you hear what's happening in China?
06:40 --> 06:48 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and it's like, oh, and then we had that sense of, I don't know if we're going to be doing this much longer, I think this is all going to go bad and we better go home.
06:49 --> 06:55 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, most of them, one of the first like zoom rooms, because like as soon as the room is ordered, it was like everything is being done remotely.
06:56 --> 06:58 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, into why it was all all remote.
06:59 --> 07:07 [SPEAKER_00]: And I spoke to a member of the right as room salt chiroces and he talked a bit about how it kind of continued to be a zoom room from there on, right?
07:07 --> 07:22 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, what happened once I don't live in L.A. and so for me to go down to for the six years of justified and other things, I would fly down Monday or Tuesday, fly home Thursday or Friday and spend a week basically in L.A.
07:23 --> 07:34 [SPEAKER_03]: And with the pandemic, finding we could do it on Zoom, my commute went from three hours and having to be away from home to 15 second commute down into the basement.
07:34 --> 07:38 [SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, hopefully the end of the day, my wife unlocked the door so I'm allowed back home.
07:39 --> 07:44 [SPEAKER_01]: It was just a good immersion for writing on silo that known as a lot out of their houses.
07:45 --> 07:46 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no, it was that.
07:46 --> 07:52 [SPEAKER_03]: But remember the fear, like, people going to want to watch this show because we're just emerging from underground.
07:52 --> 07:55 [SPEAKER_03]: And thankfully, they did.
07:56 --> 07:58 [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think that maybe people love documentaries.
07:59 --> 08:00 [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
08:00 --> 08:19 [SPEAKER_00]: And to say, linked into the zeitgeist, but then, and it's interesting that, you know, we talked about Hugh, you wrote these books starting, I mean, at least they started to be published around 2011, I think it was, and now, obviously, the season, people are commenting about the documentary nature of it in ways that we could not have anticipated.
08:19 --> 08:20 [SPEAKER_00]: Was that something, Graham, that,
08:20 --> 08:29 [SPEAKER_00]: Like, when things started happening in the news with Iran, did you go, oh shit, or did you, were you like, well, I guess that just makes us even more relevant.
08:30 --> 08:47 [SPEAKER_03]: We kind of went oh shit, but it was also, you know, the reality is, I think, you know, you picked, you know, we're disgusted, but picked around because they are a, they've been a perennial thorn in America side since, you know, since the fall of the shot.
08:48 --> 08:53 [SPEAKER_03]: So it's sort of safe bet that they could be dangerous and also the idea that
08:54 --> 09:07 [SPEAKER_03]: creating some kind of nano weapon and AI is also just a lower cost thing for a state actor to do than would be a big nuclear program and all of that stuff seemed to fit no matter what the timeline was.
09:08 --> 09:12 [SPEAKER_03]: The weird thing was is that we called the operation
09:14 --> 09:41 [SPEAKER_03]: Righteous Hammer for Righteous Hammer was going to be the name of the in season three that Charlotte's on and then they're what so we we've filmed scene we've finished filming the the season and then that June was the first attack on on Iran bombing run and they called that midnight hammer as like oh great we can't even use hammer so we changed it to Righteous vengeance which also felt
09:42 --> 09:52 [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I think a little, you know, we were trying to mimic and mock these grandiose titles that get used for military operations.
09:52 --> 09:52 [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
09:53 --> 09:53 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
09:53 --> 09:54 [SPEAKER_03]: Let's go back to the literature.
09:54 --> 09:58 [SPEAKER_03]: Overlord for, for D-Day, which, but that was a great one.
09:59 --> 10:04 [SPEAKER_01]: And then there are also like F-35s shot down over Iran early on in the, in the conflict.
10:05 --> 10:09 [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, that's happening and we've already filmed those scenes and to, yeah,
10:10 --> 10:16 [SPEAKER_03]: And we just, yeah, it was just, well, you know, he wrote this a long time ago and we just stuck to that.
10:16 --> 10:18 [SPEAKER_03]: Was an easy answer for us.
10:19 --> 10:20 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, blame me.
10:20 --> 10:22 [SPEAKER_03]: That's, like, that's your thing.
10:23 --> 10:26 [SPEAKER_03]: And I saw one, one, you know, one little comment thing.
10:26 --> 10:31 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I, I like this until the anti-Aranian, you know, take on this thing.
10:31 --> 10:33 [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, just keep watching.
10:34 --> 10:34 [SPEAKER_00]: Just keep watching.
10:34 --> 10:35 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
10:35 --> 10:36 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
10:36 --> 10:36 [SPEAKER_01]: Don't worry, we're back, guys.
10:38 --> 10:42 [SPEAKER_00]: The way we normally do our podcasts is I'm the book reader.
10:42 --> 10:46 [SPEAKER_00]: Luke is has not read any of the books and I protect him religiously from books boilers.
10:47 --> 10:52 [SPEAKER_00]: For this conversation, if we have any books boilers, I'll sniff them out and release them as a separate bonus snippet.
10:53 --> 10:56 [SPEAKER_00]: So don't worry about that, but it's just been interesting.
10:57 --> 11:00 [SPEAKER_00]: to see him what he guesses and what he doesn't guess.
11:01 --> 11:08 [SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, a lot of it is coming through loud and clear, even to people who don't know the answers from the source material.
11:08 --> 11:10 [SPEAKER_00]: So, compliments on that.
11:11 --> 11:17 [SPEAKER_00]: Speaking of Luke, he sent in a couple of questions for you both.
11:18 --> 11:19 [SPEAKER_03]: What do you got from Luke?
11:20 --> 11:23 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so Luke says, you're more questions.
11:24 --> 11:39 [SPEAKER_02]: for Hugh Howe and Graham, so first question to Hugh Howe, which change from the book to TV, are you most pleased with and conversely which change would you rather not have had to make?
11:41 --> 11:45 [SPEAKER_02]: And what is it that drew you to silo as a project in the first place?
11:47 --> 11:49 [SPEAKER_00]: So let's actually tackle those in the reverse order.
11:50 --> 11:52 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, please, let's do the fighting last.
11:53 --> 11:54 [SPEAKER_01]: Fighting last, okay.
11:55 --> 11:59 [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I so grand briefly, I'm sure you've been asked this a lot.
11:59 --> 12:03 [SPEAKER_00]: So how did you get involved in the silo project in the first place?
12:03 --> 12:05 [SPEAKER_00]: And what drew you to that project?
12:05 --> 12:11 [SPEAKER_00]: People might know you from past projects like we've brought up justified and pulling skies in the podcast.
12:12 --> 12:16 [SPEAKER_00]: So it feels within your wheelhouse, but what in particular about silo, were you keen on?
12:19 --> 12:23 [SPEAKER_03]: Hugh, when was this sort of feeding frenzy for a TV version?
12:23 --> 12:24 [SPEAKER_03]: Is that like 10 years ago now?
12:25 --> 12:26 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
12:26 --> 12:51 [SPEAKER_03]: So it was after there was an attempt that you first option got was option for a feature Which really got Steve Zalean and all it, you know, it's like and then happily it opened up to TV And there were a lot of suitors and I was asked by Sony where I was at that time And the guys who ran Sony then were exactly an emperor in Jamie or elected who now run
12:52 --> 13:17 [SPEAKER_03]: Apple TV and I was asked by then Sony to read the books and I read them really fast and went oh, this is great But yeah, you can attach me to it and we didn't get it But I'll tell you what what what hooked me was Great opening story, you know the sheriff in his wife and what the hell and
13:19 --> 13:21 [SPEAKER_03]: But it was a mystery story.
13:22 --> 13:24 [SPEAKER_03]: And, but it was a different kind of mystery story.
13:25 --> 13:33 [SPEAKER_03]: It was not, you know, there's not a body in the, in the, in the, the arboretum or whatever the hell, you know, and some kind of cozy thing.
13:33 --> 13:34 [SPEAKER_03]: This is people living underground.
13:34 --> 13:36 [SPEAKER_03]: And you're just wondering, what the hell happened?
13:37 --> 13:43 [SPEAKER_03]: And then so reading the books, the other thing that struck me was a great world created, great characters.
13:45 --> 14:13 [SPEAKER_03]: Great mystery, and to my mind, a great solution, great reveals that sometimes, and I read a fair number of murder mysteries, you get to the end and you kind of go, the ride was fun, but the answer isn't all that surprising or that interesting, and Hugh's answer was I felt rock solid and it felt like it had a good beginning middle in the end.
14:15 --> 14:15 [SPEAKER_03]: It had Julia.
14:16 --> 14:24 [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you had to create her after, you know, basically, while killing off, you love to kill off characters.
14:24 --> 14:28 [SPEAKER_03]: When you read the mini room in January, he said, you know, we can kill off everybody.
14:28 --> 14:29 [SPEAKER_03]: You know what you kill off, Julia?
14:29 --> 14:33 [SPEAKER_03]: And we're like, you know, we can't kill off Julia.
14:33 --> 14:37 [SPEAKER_03]: Well, maybe there was a short story written after the Silent Project
14:37 --> 14:40 [SPEAKER_03]: or truly it doesn't do so, well, so anyway.
14:41 --> 14:47 [SPEAKER_03]: We, that was, that was the big hook for me, was great mystery, great writing, great characters, great world.
14:48 --> 14:49 [SPEAKER_03]: It wasn't the author project.
14:49 --> 14:53 [SPEAKER_03]: Now I've said all that in my shit, I'm money here with US to say about what change we might need.
14:54 --> 14:56 [SPEAKER_01]: Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
14:56 --> 15:00 [SPEAKER_01]: We have like this, I think, first part of the question was all the changes that I loved.
15:01 --> 15:03 [SPEAKER_01]: And there's so many that if I did a pass,
15:08 --> 15:08 [SPEAKER_01]: story.
15:08 --> 15:10 [SPEAKER_01]: Some of it's just canon for me now.
15:10 --> 15:11 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think.
15:11 --> 15:13 [SPEAKER_00]: You used it at the end of stopping of Walker before.
15:13 --> 15:14 [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, my God.
15:14 --> 15:19 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, I just, it's hard to see that relationship between Walker and Juliet.
15:20 --> 15:20 [SPEAKER_01]: the same.
15:22 --> 15:27 [SPEAKER_01]: Now that I've seen it on the screen, I think the the book version is not as showing as the TV version.
15:28 --> 15:31 [SPEAKER_01]: Some of that's what Walter brought.
15:31 --> 15:32 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Harriet.
15:33 --> 15:34 [SPEAKER_01]: She's just unbelievable.
15:35 --> 15:41 [SPEAKER_00]: You know, so many people have been watching silo and then Ted Lasso and having absolutely flash about her capture.
15:41 --> 15:42 [SPEAKER_01]: But it's insane.
15:42 --> 15:43 [SPEAKER_01]: It's insane.
15:44 --> 15:44 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
15:45 --> 15:53 [SPEAKER_01]: It's like she and Daniel and Troy between the episodes of Ryan and Ting, is this the same person?
15:54 --> 16:09 [SPEAKER_01]: And I think changing Thurmond to a woman is also brilliant because in the book shift of being very satirical about how men are the problem, silo one is just like all men, all the founders are men.
16:10 --> 16:12 [SPEAKER_01]: It's very heavy-handed, but I'm doing it on purpose.
16:15 --> 16:16 [SPEAKER_03]: But then it's true.
16:16 --> 16:19 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, let's be honest.
16:19 --> 16:20 [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah.
16:20 --> 16:22 [SPEAKER_01]: But it is also a little worse started by women.
16:22 --> 16:25 [SPEAKER_01]: No, it's like 90% of violent crimes are men.
16:25 --> 16:26 [SPEAKER_01]: 99% of rates are men.
16:26 --> 16:31 [SPEAKER_01]: We don't like to generalize in the one way that it actually makes sense to do it.
16:31 --> 16:34 [SPEAKER_01]: But it's a, it's a, we're the problem.
16:34 --> 16:44 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but I don't think it works as well on screen, like, and I think it was really smart to soften up the makeup of the founders by just casting the best actor and not worrying about the genders much.
16:45 --> 16:49 [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, and I've seen even book readers respond differently just because of the casting to this character.
16:49 --> 16:50 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
16:50 --> 16:51 [SPEAKER_01]: Totally.
16:51 --> 16:53 [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's it's a little she's scarier to me.
16:54 --> 17:00 [SPEAKER_01]: The other person is scarier like when I first heard, um, they they cast him for Bernard.
17:00 --> 17:01 [SPEAKER_01]: I was like,
17:02 --> 17:10 [SPEAKER_01]: And then you see him on screen and there's no way a little deebish IT guy would put the fear of God into you the way to him.
17:10 --> 17:15 [SPEAKER_01]: He's just like he's so imposing just in the last flesh season.
17:16 --> 17:20 [SPEAKER_01]: when they know they're pulling up a big load and he gets off in the way he lumbers down the hallway.
17:21 --> 17:25 [SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I don't think I'm just like watching Jason in a horn movie come back.
17:25 --> 17:25 [SPEAKER_01]: You like this dude.
17:25 --> 17:27 [SPEAKER_00]: You got to kill all three emerge to you.
17:27 --> 17:27 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
17:27 --> 17:28 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
17:28 --> 17:37 [SPEAKER_01]: And so different all things that honestly, when I hear these changes, I, it's like a few seconds from my brain to meet a chest and then I'm all in.
17:38 --> 17:42 [SPEAKER_01]: And in the writer's room, I was like that, my grandma's often pulling us back to the book and I was,
17:43 --> 17:47 [SPEAKER_01]: trying to let everybody know that bring your creativity and your ideas to this project.
17:47 --> 17:48 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not.
17:48 --> 17:51 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to frame by frame retelling of the same story.
17:51 --> 17:53 [SPEAKER_01]: I want something new.
17:54 --> 17:54 [SPEAKER_01]: I can go on.
17:54 --> 18:01 [SPEAKER_01]: I think the expansion of Sims and Camille and their characters makes this season so compelling.
18:02 --> 18:07 [SPEAKER_01]: And if you're a book reader, here's something that was off screen that you now get to be a part of.
18:08 --> 18:10 [SPEAKER_01]: Like it adds to the story to change the story.
18:13 --> 18:28 [SPEAKER_01]: And I think the only thing, the only thing that we changed that we probably could have got away with not changing, and it wouldn't have been just as good is in the book, anything paper in wood is very, very valuable.
18:29 --> 18:37 [SPEAKER_01]: So when you see it, you know something real easy as happening, like if you found a book, it's like, well, that's that's priceless.
18:38 --> 18:44 [SPEAKER_01]: And as a vocal lover, obviously loved the idea that like something as simple as paper, or if you saw wooden chair, something super simple.
18:45 --> 18:51 [SPEAKER_01]: And I think for just for simplicity, we kind of ignored that role and said, it's not necessary to the plot.
18:52 --> 19:02 [SPEAKER_01]: But I think the word things you could do with it, if things are written on plastic, where you have two notes you turn one of them upside down and hold it up to the light and they've got a visual kind of
19:05 --> 19:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but it didn't, it's like, none of these differences were that important and all the differences that were made, I think, make the story better for TV.
19:16 --> 19:18 [SPEAKER_03]: So we, we tried to protect paper.
19:19 --> 19:25 [SPEAKER_03]: Um, and you'll notice in the first season, and even on going, we're, when you're in a classroom, the kids are writing on the slate.
19:26 --> 19:27 [SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
19:27 --> 19:31 [SPEAKER_03]: Um, and we wanted to make that, but then it was like, well, we need paper for the
19:34 --> 19:38 [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and then maybe a little bit and it's just it's one of those mission not mission creep.
19:38 --> 20:01 [SPEAKER_03]: That's not the right thing But you just with the props and production design and stuff it just starts to complicated for no no big game It's complicated and once you once you let let it in people they just go with they go for it and you just kind of go Yeah, but yeah, we we want to pay for example the door to holding three is made out of wood
20:03 --> 20:08 [SPEAKER_03]: And that came from his notion that would be incredibly precious in the silo.
20:08 --> 20:11 [SPEAKER_03]: They don't have a lot of big lumber trees.
20:11 --> 20:14 [SPEAKER_03]: They have stuff that's left over from the cohort of four times.
20:14 --> 20:16 [SPEAKER_03]: They repurposed and all of that.
20:16 --> 20:23 [SPEAKER_03]: So it was also, I mean, I got to spend a night on the nimmets and the captain's door was made out of wood.
20:24 --> 20:29 [SPEAKER_03]: So when you get up to the captain at that level, everything else is metal on an aircraft carrier, except
20:32 --> 20:38 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the Nimitz, I don't know if it's still operative, but this was like 15 years ago or so.
20:38 --> 20:43 [SPEAKER_03]: And so there's things like that that come in and we use.
20:43 --> 20:47 [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, the paper thing was one thing.
20:47 --> 20:49 [SPEAKER_03]: And also, like we didn't quite
20:50 --> 21:13 [SPEAKER_03]: land on and get to, that it's not cheap to send a computer message either, that there is costs to the thing, because it's all about controlling the population and keeping everyone in their strata, you know, or strata, and so we tried, we aimed in that direction, and then there are sometimes where at over time it just kind of,
21:14 --> 21:15 [SPEAKER_03]: production one.
21:16 --> 21:21 [SPEAKER_01]: Another change that I loved is, in the book, everyone's profession.
21:21 --> 21:25 [SPEAKER_01]: They were just a different colored jumpsuit, which would have made visually the show very boring.
21:27 --> 21:30 [SPEAKER_01]: And the wardrobe is one of the highlights of the show to me.
21:30 --> 21:34 [SPEAKER_01]: It's so cool seeing the creativity that went into that.
21:35 --> 21:38 [SPEAKER_00]: It was say silos have in teens teams to have the jumpsuits.
21:38 --> 21:41 [SPEAKER_01]: So I was 17 has the jumpsuits and that was our challenge.
21:41 --> 21:43 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, doesn't it not to me, I think.
21:43 --> 21:44 [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.
21:44 --> 21:55 [SPEAKER_03]: What it was also, what it was was a cultural thing so that we wanted to get that sense that every silo even though they started the same over this period of time is going to have a slightly different culture.
21:56 --> 22:05 [SPEAKER_03]: and the idea that they had a sort of a freer society to agree, and yet they all wore their sort of segmented jumpsuit.
22:06 --> 22:13 [SPEAKER_03]: But they're all, but we also had that all the boilers used to say, they called them in the UK, would be personalized.
22:13 --> 22:16 [SPEAKER_03]: So people would have done stitching on them and things like that.
22:16 --> 22:16 [SPEAKER_03]: It was, it was,
22:18 --> 22:21 [SPEAKER_03]: Every department was kicking in and just diving deep.
22:21 --> 22:22 [SPEAKER_03]: And what about this?
22:22 --> 22:22 [SPEAKER_03]: What about that?
22:23 --> 22:27 [SPEAKER_03]: And it was, and, you know, just working within Hugh Sandbox.
22:28 --> 22:33 [SPEAKER_00]: Another world-building change was in the books because you brought up plastic.
22:33 --> 22:41 [SPEAKER_00]: In the books there was oil that was powering the generator and that's been changed to geothermal.
22:41 --> 22:45 [SPEAKER_00]: And so because of the oil there also could be refineries creating plastics in the books.
22:45 --> 22:51 [SPEAKER_00]: I assume that change was because Georgia has geothermal and not oil or is there am I overthinking this?
22:52 --> 22:55 [SPEAKER_03]: What it was was sort of a combo platter.
22:55 --> 22:57 [SPEAKER_03]: We wanted geothermal to have this.
22:57 --> 23:04 [SPEAKER_03]: It honestly, there's some things that happen because you come up with this, oh, this would be a cool sequence and the director wants it.
23:04 --> 23:07 [SPEAKER_03]: Well, how do we retcon that so that there's a reason for it?
23:07 --> 23:17 [SPEAKER_03]: So just this idea that there could be peril to fixing the generator, that the generator would be, like if there was a constant stream of steam coming up from the bowels of the earth,
23:19 --> 23:21 [SPEAKER_03]: if you can only cap it for a while or it's going to blow.
23:21 --> 23:22 [SPEAKER_03]: It's all crap.
23:22 --> 23:23 [SPEAKER_03]: It's all made up.
23:24 --> 23:24 [SPEAKER_03]: Right?
23:24 --> 23:26 [SPEAKER_03]: You never would build a vertical generator.
23:27 --> 23:28 [SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
23:29 --> 23:32 [SPEAKER_03]: Our son is an engineer and when I told him that he said, why?
23:32 --> 23:34 [SPEAKER_03]: I don't think this looks delicious.
23:36 --> 23:39 [SPEAKER_03]: And he said, OK, but, and I said, well, what about this?
23:39 --> 23:41 [SPEAKER_03]: And this, and he said, no, that would be catastrophic.
23:42 --> 23:42 [SPEAKER_03]: So you can't do that.
23:43 --> 23:44 [SPEAKER_03]: So we came up with other things.
23:44 --> 23:46 [SPEAKER_03]: But that was really the reason.
23:46 --> 23:51 [SPEAKER_03]: It was just to get Juliet in a tank of water, and it's all going to blow up.
23:52 --> 23:58 [SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, for every one engineer who emails me to say, like, you can't do this.
23:58 --> 23:59 [SPEAKER_01]: You can't do that.
23:59 --> 24:04 [SPEAKER_01]: I get 100 emails of people, like to say, that episode was unbelievable.
24:06 --> 24:15 [SPEAKER_01]: So you're not trying to make something that's going to please like the, the, the, the, the mental level engineers out there trying to make something that draws in hundreds of thousands, it's not millions of viewers.
24:16 --> 24:25 [SPEAKER_03]: Quick side note, years ago I wrote a film called Broken Arrow and I talked to a B2 pilot and wanted to know and I had to be this, you know, it's the stealth bomber.
24:25 --> 24:28 [SPEAKER_03]: How would one pilot kill another pilot?
24:28 --> 24:31 [SPEAKER_03]: Like how do you ask a pilot B2 about that?
24:32 --> 24:36 [SPEAKER_03]: As soon as I did, he said, oh, okay, so this thing comes out, you could call them with that.
24:36 --> 24:37 [SPEAKER_03]: Or you could poison this food.
24:37 --> 24:41 [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, everyone gets into the fun of telling a story.
24:41 --> 24:43 [SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, some people don't,
24:44 --> 24:53 [SPEAKER_03]: Um, talking to someone the other night about, you know, how he just checks out a science fiction if they do anything about faster than light travel and it's just like, it's never going to happen.
24:53 --> 25:12 [SPEAKER_03]: It's like, yeah, okay, but it's a story, you know, but anyway, so, um, you know, we, we tried to stay within the bounds and yet I did the math and the silo would have to be, you know, five times this wide and five times this deed to have enough, uh,
25:13 --> 25:16 [SPEAKER_03]: food produced to some sorts and thousand people.
25:17 --> 25:20 [SPEAKER_03]: And he doesn't say exactly how wide it is.
25:20 --> 25:23 [SPEAKER_03]: We sort of needed to live within a certain landscape.
25:25 --> 25:30 [SPEAKER_03]: But it's so big that people say, OK, OK, that's fine.
25:30 --> 25:31 [SPEAKER_00]: I'll go with it.
25:31 --> 25:33 [SPEAKER_03]: And apparently, they've answered it.
25:33 --> 25:37 [SPEAKER_03]: And that's the other thing is that, you know, one, two, introduce yourself.
25:37 --> 25:38 [SPEAKER_03]: It's really good.
25:38 --> 25:39 [SPEAKER_03]: It's science.
25:39 --> 25:39 [SPEAKER_03]: It's for you.
25:39 --> 25:40 [SPEAKER_03]: They figure it out.
25:40 --> 25:41 [SPEAKER_01]: This is the future.
25:41 --> 25:42 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we got a cover.
25:44 --> 25:50 [SPEAKER_01]: I had a reader of email me one time because there's a meeting in a bookstore and D.C. and and shift.
25:51 --> 25:54 [SPEAKER_01]: And I have it on a street in this taking place, you know, ten years in the future.
25:55 --> 25:58 [SPEAKER_01]: And the email me to say, that bookstore is on this other street.
25:58 --> 26:00 [SPEAKER_01]: And I just email them back and said, yeah, they moved.
26:01 --> 26:03 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's this is, it's the future.
26:03 --> 26:03 [SPEAKER_01]: It's my world.
26:03 --> 26:07 [SPEAKER_01]: You can tell me where they located in the bookstore in my future.
26:08 --> 26:09 [SPEAKER_00]: It's a slightly different reality.
26:09 --> 26:10 [SPEAKER_00]: It's true.
26:10 --> 26:11 [SPEAKER_01]: It's the bookstore's bigger now.
26:13 --> 26:19 [SPEAKER_03]: And just so, and I tell everyone this, we didn't set it any specific time in the future.
26:19 --> 26:29 [SPEAKER_03]: We wanted to play it as near-term, near future, because I don't like it when you have to create cars that look like they're from the future.
26:29 --> 26:29 [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
26:29 --> 26:31 [SPEAKER_03]: Always look like crap.
26:31 --> 26:35 [SPEAKER_03]: And it looks like, I don't know if it's not buying that.
26:35 --> 26:39 [SPEAKER_03]: And then what's funny is then you see actual cars made over our lifetime and it's like,
26:42 --> 26:48 [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it was a truck and you're like, oh, I guess we've been with chicken or the egg situation.
26:48 --> 26:54 [SPEAKER_03]: Well, it is and I think that, yeah, we didn't want to be leading the design of new automobiles.
26:55 --> 26:55 [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
26:56 --> 27:01 [SPEAKER_00]: One eagle-eyed viewer picked out in the code when they were at that hacker Steve's house.
27:01 --> 27:03 [SPEAKER_00]: And he was scanning Daniel's pass.
27:03 --> 27:07 [SPEAKER_00]: They picked out in the code that it said 2024, November 2024.
27:08 --> 27:09 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, wow.
27:09 --> 27:10 [SPEAKER_03]: That's probably what it was filmed.
27:11 --> 27:14 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, fair enough, yeah, that makes sense.
27:15 --> 27:19 [SPEAKER_00]: So, I know your relationship to every adaptation is different.
27:19 --> 27:33 [SPEAKER_00]: We also covered Begin 23 in this podcast, and I know that you were much more hands-off at that one, but this one, do I have it right that you were part of the first initial breakout and since then have been consulting on scripts?
27:35 --> 27:37 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I give notes, which I'm happy for them to ignore.
27:38 --> 27:42 [SPEAKER_01]: But my, my, my, my joy is that I get to read the adaptation.
27:42 --> 27:48 [SPEAKER_01]: And I think in the beginning of every season, we've done like a call to run through things.
27:48 --> 28:00 [SPEAKER_01]: Or remember, we were in London to promote one season and Graham, pull me aside for breakfast, we're morning just to like lay out what he had in mind for the, for the next season.
28:00 --> 28:03 [SPEAKER_01]: And so it's like, you know, getting to be,
28:03 --> 28:13 [SPEAKER_01]: just another one of the useless producers who listen to Graham, nods to your genius, and then let him do what he wants.
28:13 --> 28:14 [SPEAKER_01]: It's a great job, isn't it?
28:15 --> 28:17 [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I got to do that on the Americans.
28:17 --> 28:22 [SPEAKER_03]: I just like what Reed scripts that Joe Weisberg and Joe Joel Fields have written in their team.
28:22 --> 28:23 [SPEAKER_03]: It's like, this is fantastic.
28:23 --> 28:26 [SPEAKER_03]: Don't change anything, you know?
28:27 --> 28:28 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then get to go to the
28:31 --> 28:34 [SPEAKER_00]: My primary job, you were on set twice, right?
28:35 --> 28:40 [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, he's been on that set, I mean, I mean, sorry, on camera, two cameos, right?
28:41 --> 28:58 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the two cameos, yeah, I think for season one and three, you know, I feel guilty doing that because it's such a production, like you really disrupt people's day, even to have any kind of guest on set, great work for people.
28:58 --> 29:15 [SPEAKER_03]: But the thing is, they enjoy it because they know where in Hughes' world, or like at the very end, and this is a tiny, you've spot I won't say where it is, but I appear in season four for a minute, and then I realize they've got one camera just on me because I'm the freaking showrunner.
29:15 --> 29:21 [SPEAKER_03]: And it's like, it's a pain in the ass, and the guy had to say, oh, Graham, are you wearing an apple watch?
29:24 --> 29:38 [SPEAKER_03]: It's like, yeah, it's fun when he showed up, you know, and she and, you know, he was there when the original sets were being built in the stairs and he hammered in a few steps.
29:40 --> 29:47 [SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, we always think of that as like this is the world that he built and literally he hammered in a few steps.
29:49 --> 30:01 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I love being onset watching everyone working, learn a lot from watching everyone and watching the growth of some of the, you know, the caskets, all the, the credit as we see them on screen, but there's so many stories behind the scenes.
30:01 --> 30:15 [SPEAKER_01]: There's Eric who directed episodes, started off in the writer's room and had done some directing and things on the side, but they're like, he, he, this guy really leveled up on this show and it's going on to do incredible
30:18 --> 30:20 [SPEAKER_00]: see his name over the credits on the show.
30:21 --> 30:26 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's he's used it for us in the nicest guy ever and no, he's just one of a crowd.
30:26 --> 30:34 [SPEAKER_01]: He was not in and Sonia and there's just like all these incredible people involved who don't get as much credit.
30:34 --> 30:36 [SPEAKER_01]: and that the thrill per video of her from that year.
30:36 --> 30:37 [SPEAKER_01]: She's watching that.
30:38 --> 30:41 [SPEAKER_00]: Can I say, Sonia Bloom, your assistant.
30:41 --> 30:45 [SPEAKER_00]: I believe she's the one I learned who wrote the mystery of the pets.
30:45 --> 30:49 [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, she wrote mystery of the pets.
30:49 --> 30:53 [SPEAKER_03]: We would just hand her things like that because she's just a great writer.
30:53 --> 30:54 [SPEAKER_03]: And
30:55 --> 30:59 [SPEAKER_03]: There's a new project we're working on and now she's a writer on that.
30:59 --> 31:00 [SPEAKER_03]: And which is fun.
31:00 --> 31:05 [SPEAKER_03]: And there's, you know, Jess Blair was a very junior writer when we started.
31:06 --> 31:11 [SPEAKER_03]: And now she's working on her own show with Katie, something that the three of us have come up with.
31:11 --> 31:16 [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, it's been fun to see that happen over the five years.
31:17 --> 31:29 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, um, can I ask what point, one of the biggest things that book readers had going into this show was we were wondering how are you going to handle the Troy Donnell as I call him.
31:30 --> 31:30 [SPEAKER_00]: Donny Daniels.
31:30 --> 31:31 [SPEAKER_00]: Donnell.
31:31 --> 31:32 [UNKNOWN]: Thank you.
31:33 --> 31:40 [SPEAKER_00]: At what point did you decide, you know, as soon as I saw the names of the episodes for this season, saw the last episode was Troy, I was like, okay, question answered.
31:41 --> 31:48 [SPEAKER_00]: But were there other things that you considered rather than, uh, because we talked about in the second book, it opens with Troy.
31:48 --> 31:52 [SPEAKER_00]: We don't know, obviously it's Donald because we can't see them.
31:53 --> 31:55 [SPEAKER_00]: You can't do that in a visual adaptation.
31:55 --> 31:59 [SPEAKER_00]: Did you always know you were going to handle it this way or did you have other ideas you tossed around to?
32:01 --> 32:14 [SPEAKER_03]: Um, we knew we were going to handle it that way, right from the one of the, okay, so the other thing that that he would gave us was First of all, a trilogy and So the first question was how many seasons and how are we going to do them and?
32:14 --> 32:15 [SPEAKER_03]: And Jamie or like
32:16 --> 32:27 [SPEAKER_03]: who again ran Sony with Zach, and then now runs Apple, big fan of the books, and when he wants something to get done, he's just in and behind it.
32:28 --> 32:32 [SPEAKER_03]: And so a lot of stuff was worked out just between the two of us.
32:32 --> 32:41 [SPEAKER_03]: And the big one was originally we thought it would be five seasons, two seasons for the first book, one for shift, and then two for dust.
32:41 --> 32:42 [SPEAKER_03]: And what
32:44 --> 32:46 [SPEAKER_03]: We were headed in that direction.
32:46 --> 32:55 [SPEAKER_03]: And we knew that one of the first things we discussed right here in that mini-room was first season ends with Julia walking over the hill, right?
32:55 --> 32:58 [SPEAKER_03]: And that's seeing that there's many more silos out there.
32:58 --> 33:01 [SPEAKER_03]: We knew that that was a great ending to a season.
33:01 --> 33:10 [SPEAKER_03]: And that became our signature on the show, which is a little bit of cliffhanger, but also just a sense of the world is widening.
33:10 --> 33:13 [SPEAKER_03]: There's more questions now and yet some answers.
33:14 --> 33:30 [SPEAKER_03]: So we knew that, and we knew that season two would enter with Julia coming back from 17, that her story would happen in 17, and that there would be a rebellion in 18, and everything would come together at the end of a season two.
33:30 --> 33:36 [SPEAKER_03]: And then we're looking at season three, and that was going to be shift.
33:37 --> 33:49 [SPEAKER_03]: And the big thing was, he does something in the book that you know, which is Julia doesn't appear into the last page, which we weren't saying we weren't going to do until we cast Rebecca Ferguson.
33:50 --> 33:51 [SPEAKER_03]: And then we've got her.
33:52 --> 33:55 [SPEAKER_03]: on the poster, and she's the lead of the show.
33:55 --> 33:58 [SPEAKER_03]: We can't do a season where she just appears in the final season.
33:58 --> 34:00 [SPEAKER_03]: It's final scene.
34:00 --> 34:09 [SPEAKER_03]: So it's going to be about memory, because we figured out that Detroit, the Daniel's Troy thing, was all about memory.
34:09 --> 34:12 [SPEAKER_03]: And we realized they'd done the big memory reset 140 years ago in the silo.
34:17 --> 34:24 [SPEAKER_03]: Let's have that be a thing, and yet you read the reviews or the comments and people posting this is boring, it's memory, blah, blah, blah.
34:24 --> 34:29 [SPEAKER_03]: And then halfway through the season they're going, okay, now we see what you're doing and it's okay.
34:29 --> 34:33 [SPEAKER_03]: And so by the way, I don't read any of that, but that's what people tell me.
34:34 --> 34:39 [SPEAKER_03]: But that was the big, big switch we did, which was let's create a new story for Julia.
34:40 --> 34:53 [SPEAKER_03]: and to have her in the in the season, but it meant that the Daniel to Troy switch would need it to be something that we landed in the season.
34:54 --> 35:01 [SPEAKER_01]: I think it was just, it's a different kind of, it's a different kind of twist instead of a
35:06 --> 35:14 [SPEAKER_01]: Like it's so visceral and actually I think you should get an Emmy mom for what he pulled off this season.
35:15 --> 35:21 [SPEAKER_01]: But the way his demeanor and the way he walks across the room and the way he looks in a and a sweatsuit is just terrified.
35:22 --> 35:24 [SPEAKER_03]: And the way he just sort of pondered things just
35:25 --> 35:27 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, gotta get those numbers down.
35:27 --> 35:29 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that's okay.
35:29 --> 35:38 [SPEAKER_03]: So it's a combination of ash and also working with Matt Craven because Victor is incredible in that episode.
35:39 --> 35:41 [SPEAKER_00]: One of my favorite characters, by the way, in both versions.
35:41 --> 35:43 [SPEAKER_03]: Just the looks on these faces.
35:43 --> 35:46 [SPEAKER_03]: Make it the supporting nomination.
35:46 --> 35:48 [SPEAKER_01]: That episode is important to force.
35:48 --> 35:49 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
35:49 --> 36:04 [SPEAKER_03]: But it's Fred, it's Fred and he was going off of, you know, some, I can't remember who was Snowden or someone else, but there were leaked mission information, you know.
36:04 --> 36:28 [SPEAKER_03]: audio video of various things that America has done and you can hear that kind of talk about something that's horrifying that's happening and it's like yeah we gotta get those numbers down okay we've got a future to them on them you know and so Fred used that sort of anodine military speech that just is so chilling when he's saying that we're getting a little wind what's
36:34 --> 36:46 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the dehumanizing let's switch to thermal, let's cut the audio, like the any one of those three lines of the most memorable line of a season of TV and all three of them came in one scene and Peter still talking about it.
36:47 --> 37:12 [SPEAKER_00]: And another thing I have to compliment you for is a tricky thing you had to handle with the book shift is it covers a lot of different timelines like you have the whole silo one story going throughout which kind of got a speed run in the finale here but you also have the DC story, the mission rebellion from 140 years ago and solos backstory and I imagine that would have been too much switching back and forth.
37:13 --> 37:20 [SPEAKER_03]: That would have been a little, you'll notice that we just at least had a reference to mission, you know, the quote they're having.
37:20 --> 37:21 [SPEAKER_00]: We are clapping.
37:22 --> 37:22 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
37:22 --> 37:27 [SPEAKER_03]: No, we love the mission story and that was one to how can we get that in.
37:27 --> 37:34 [SPEAKER_03]: And then, you know, we changed up the, the, what Daniel, what are you calling Daniel?
37:34 --> 37:35 [SPEAKER_00]: Done.
37:35 --> 37:35 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
37:35 --> 37:41 [SPEAKER_03]: The Daniel, the Daniel and Helen story because we just, I'll be honest, we just like the idea of a,
37:42 --> 37:43 [SPEAKER_03]: 1970s.
37:44 --> 37:50 [SPEAKER_03]: Well, romance and yes, we wanted to romance because we knew where we wanted to go in season four.
37:51 --> 37:55 [SPEAKER_03]: And we knew what the whole sort of arc of the whole series was going to be.
37:56 --> 38:01 [SPEAKER_03]: And where there's something where you realize everything started.
38:02 --> 38:06 [SPEAKER_03]: when Charlotte reached out to Helen and said I'm concerned about this Iran mission.
38:07 --> 38:11 [SPEAKER_03]: That's where the whole unveiling that the whole there would be no freedom.
38:12 --> 38:13 [SPEAKER_03]: There would be no victory.
38:13 --> 38:15 [SPEAKER_03]: There would be no Juliette without that one little spark.
38:16 --> 38:17 [SPEAKER_03]: And so we
38:19 --> 38:31 [SPEAKER_03]: We like that, and we like the romance and political thrillers from the 70s, you know, conversation, parallax, you, three days of the condor.
38:31 --> 38:42 [SPEAKER_03]: Those are really fun, and especially for, you know, three days of the condor, there's a good romance going on, you know, the couple that meets
38:47 --> 38:52 [SPEAKER_03]: good solid romance and, you know, they get one of the best kisses of the entire series.
38:53 --> 38:54 [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe that's best.
38:54 --> 38:54 [SPEAKER_03]: There's another one.
38:54 --> 38:59 [SPEAKER_03]: There's one coming in season four that is, uh, another.
38:59 --> 39:00 [SPEAKER_00]: I hope I know what it is.
39:00 --> 39:04 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I guess the day that Dram and I had a came together.
39:04 --> 39:05 [SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
39:05 --> 39:08 [SPEAKER_01]: Finally, we got to express our pleasure.
39:09 --> 39:15 [SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, yes, so the big decision was, we need to create a Julie at story to carry her through the season.
39:15 --> 39:26 [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, it was also a way to shift, you know, the, we learned in the books a lot about the memory stuff from the mission storyline, and that's a way to shift it to the present timeline and involved Juliet.
39:26 --> 39:26 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
39:27 --> 39:36 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think you can pull off the Daniel Charlotte scene if you don't have Juliet not feeling anything about her dad dying.
39:36 --> 39:38 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it makes sense.
39:38 --> 39:51 [SPEAKER_01]: And I think people who are binging this season are going to have a different experience in the people who are watching a preview and speculating and falling into all the online commentary and waiting weeks to
39:53 --> 39:57 [SPEAKER_01]: I think people are binging now and they're like, what are people talking about this season, this flow?
39:57 --> 40:03 [SPEAKER_01]: This is like, I want to edge my seat and they're able to hit next episode and then they're having a much different experience with them.
40:04 --> 40:09 [SPEAKER_00]: Can I a speaking of Julia at Stead, pop a nickels as we call him in Glenn?
40:10 --> 40:18 [SPEAKER_00]: His story was definitely shifted forward in the show, whereas he and Julia don't reconnect till she comes back and in this version he's gone by then.
40:19 --> 40:30 [SPEAKER_00]: Is there, I mean, I suspect maybe there's also a making room for other storylines later situation, but is there a reason why we lost pop a nickel so soon?
40:35 --> 40:57 [SPEAKER_03]: There's something that Hugh does throughout the books, which is as a real sense of tragedy, that people are lost, and he was willing to kill many more people than we were, but all the way to ACC season four, but the thing with Pop and Nichols was we just, we wanted
40:58 --> 41:12 [SPEAKER_03]: him to go through this thing in season two, not knowing what's happened to his daughter and filling this guilt and being pulled into working with the good people and then giving his life for their freedom.
41:13 --> 41:16 [SPEAKER_03]: And that really sort of landed for us.
41:16 --> 41:23 [SPEAKER_03]: And then it's funny how things you don't predict, it's like we had him take off the watch and hand it to
41:24 --> 41:27 [SPEAKER_03]: Hank, and that then became something, it's like, oh, we've got that.
41:27 --> 41:28 [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, let's use that.
41:29 --> 41:36 [SPEAKER_03]: And then that became something, and that, you know, the watch, the watch is part of the show, right, almost to the end.
41:36 --> 41:38 [SPEAKER_03]: So, yeah.
41:38 --> 41:39 [SPEAKER_00]: Like the pez dispenser.
41:40 --> 41:41 [SPEAKER_01]: Like the pez, the girl pet.
41:42 --> 41:48 [SPEAKER_01]: If you had, if you had the reconnecting with dad, I think it kind of would step on the power
41:53 --> 42:04 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think that that was the emotional like like not in not a father figure coming around that you have conflict with but so when you actually had conflict with coming around to say I believe in you.
42:05 --> 42:11 [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, I don't think you can be hard to do both of those storylines just as in the safe season.
42:12 --> 42:13 [SPEAKER_01]: So it worked out perfectly.
42:13 --> 42:15 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it was all intentional.
42:15 --> 42:18 [SPEAKER_01]: But um, we planned everything.
42:18 --> 42:19 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we planned everything.
42:19 --> 42:23 [SPEAKER_01]: The season is Julia and Bernard in season three or some of my favorite scenes in the whole show.
42:23 --> 42:24 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
42:24 --> 42:42 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, the stuff that we really, really enjoyed in season three was the, you know, the turn of Sims and the turn of our Nard and just the basic principle our operating principle was if people are not given the truth and they think they're doing something for the, you know, recent acts.
42:44 --> 42:47 [SPEAKER_03]: And then they find out, it's a lie, what do they do?
42:47 --> 42:49 [SPEAKER_03]: Some people just hold on, and they just double down.
42:49 --> 42:50 [SPEAKER_03]: You just say, I don't care.
42:50 --> 42:52 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to keep on doing this.
42:52 --> 42:56 [SPEAKER_03]: And other people really have an existential crisis.
42:56 --> 42:58 [SPEAKER_03]: And for these two people, they actually get something.
43:00 --> 43:06 [SPEAKER_03]: You know, a model for us always was that the silo life is like East Germany in 1983.
43:07 --> 43:11 [SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's not the worst dictatorship in the world.
43:11 --> 43:15 [SPEAKER_03]: There's some freedoms and people live lives and they have jobs and family and friends and stuff.
43:15 --> 43:18 [SPEAKER_03]: But there's the Stasi and it's weird shit who's going on.
43:19 --> 43:22 [SPEAKER_03]: And one of my favorite films of all time is the lives of others.
43:23 --> 43:28 [SPEAKER_03]: And when that guy listening in on those lives starts to realize that he's kind of on the wrong side.
43:29 --> 43:30 [SPEAKER_03]: That was a model for us as well.
43:31 --> 43:32 [SPEAKER_00]: Are we the baddies?
43:32 --> 43:34 [SPEAKER_03]: Are we the baddies, you know?
43:34 --> 43:43 [SPEAKER_00]: I would be remiss if I didn't take the chance to ask about how you got that Peter Gabriel cameo and whether it was planned when Jimmy was listening to his music in season two.
43:44 --> 43:45 [SPEAKER_03]: It was hoped for.
43:46 --> 43:52 [SPEAKER_03]: but it then explained something which is why we had them going into silo 17.
43:52 --> 43:55 [SPEAKER_03]: So, I just wanted to protect Peter and his family.
43:56 --> 43:57 [SPEAKER_03]: I want them to survive the apocalypse.
43:58 --> 43:59 [SPEAKER_03]: This is a simple thing.
43:59 --> 44:02 [SPEAKER_00]: No, we're all glad for it.
44:03 --> 44:07 [SPEAKER_03]: Early days of the show and we were new we wanted this freedom day song in the first episode.
44:08 --> 44:21 [SPEAKER_03]: I had this idea, what if, because I'm a huge Peter Gabriel fan, what if we took Salzburg Hill and had that turn into the anthem for the for silo 18.
44:23 --> 44:27 [SPEAKER_03]: Star Spangled Banner was a British drinking club song called to an aquarium.
44:27 --> 44:33 [SPEAKER_03]: It was just a popular song that they the words were written They put it to that music people did that then there was no copyright.
44:33 --> 44:35 [SPEAKER_03]: Well, that's man We're stealing this song.
44:35 --> 44:41 [SPEAKER_03]: It was 50 years old, but if you listen to it on YouTube to an aquarium It's like, oh, that's the Star Spangled Banner.
44:41 --> 44:41 [SPEAKER_03]: It's just god
44:42 --> 44:45 [SPEAKER_03]: booze words, you know, it's just people going, well, I love booze basically.
44:46 --> 44:56 [SPEAKER_03]: And so I thought, well, what if that happened to Saul's Bury Hill, and it turned into, you know, climbing up the solves, climbing up the silo stairs, and it's sort of the, and it was going to be all cool.
44:56 --> 45:00 [SPEAKER_03]: And we, so we got a meeting with him on a zoom, and he was interested.
45:01 --> 45:12 [SPEAKER_03]: But, more until them, the director was really pulling in in a different way, and finally Peter bowed out and he said privately to me, I didn't want to get in the middle of that.
45:13 --> 45:13 [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, he said.
45:14 --> 45:25 [SPEAKER_03]: So, me do your own thing, well, I think it turned out great, because I think that the freedom day song is so archely patriotic and weird and to have it used in different contexts has been wonderful.
45:26 --> 45:33 [SPEAKER_03]: But then Peter reached out to me, he had an idea, an area for television show, would I be interested in talking to him.
45:33 --> 45:35 [SPEAKER_03]: I was very interested in talking to Peter Gabriel.
45:36 --> 45:39 [SPEAKER_03]: I was very interested in, and actually the idea was great.
45:39 --> 45:50 [SPEAKER_03]: So we developed and met and talked to Matt and Connie and I and my wife and I went to the show on his last tour in Zurich because we were traveling around and had dinner with him.
45:51 --> 45:52 [SPEAKER_03]: And so it just became this thing where
45:54 --> 46:00 [SPEAKER_03]: And I've got Peter Gabriel's phone number and we're just hanging out and we're still engaging on this thing.
46:00 --> 46:05 [SPEAKER_03]: And then we came up with this idea and I said, what if he played at Silo Day?
46:06 --> 46:11 [SPEAKER_03]: And so we were thinking first of a concert and it was like, that's way too much.
46:11 --> 46:12 [SPEAKER_03]: What if it was just simply the sound check?
46:12 --> 46:17 [SPEAKER_03]: So we're just talking about 30 seconds, 40 seconds of music.
46:17 --> 46:21 [SPEAKER_03]: And I reached out to him and he said, yeah, I can do that, that'd be fun.
46:21 --> 46:32 [SPEAKER_03]: And then he just started talking to Amber, okay, let's do this version of the song and that version of the song and Amber is our director and they worked out a lot of stuff and then he said, can my son and his girlfriend come?
46:32 --> 46:33 [SPEAKER_03]: It's like, yeah, that'd be great.
46:33 --> 46:35 [SPEAKER_03]: So that's his actual son standing off stage.
46:36 --> 46:36 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
46:36 --> 46:38 [SPEAKER_03]: And his girlfriend, I'm playing him on her name.
46:39 --> 46:40 [SPEAKER_03]: And it was
46:42 --> 46:45 [SPEAKER_03]: It was one of the most fun days I've ever had in my life.
46:46 --> 46:49 [SPEAKER_03]: And if you've got a second, I'll tell one more part about it.
46:49 --> 46:49 [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, please.
46:49 --> 47:00 [SPEAKER_03]: Which is Will J Smith, the showwriter on, well, for the first five seasons of Slow Horses, he's not involved with the show anymore, neither am I.
47:00 --> 47:08 [SPEAKER_03]: But we bonded from day one on Slow Horses with our love for pro-Grock, Genesis and Peter Gabriel in particular.
47:09 --> 47:13 [SPEAKER_03]: There was a producer on the show, Jamie, who hates that stuff, so that's all we talked about.
47:13 --> 47:14 [SPEAKER_03]: That's all we talked about.
47:14 --> 47:15 [SPEAKER_03]: It's Jamie and a light tool hint.
47:15 --> 47:18 [SPEAKER_03]: So we just tormented the shit out of him because he was hilarious.
47:19 --> 47:30 [SPEAKER_03]: So I will came to set on Silo when Tim Cook showed up and Hugh flew in from, you had, where did you have to go to to get your passports?
47:33 --> 47:40 [SPEAKER_01]: You were like, we took to get to the UK when Tim Cook came to the set.
47:41 --> 47:47 [SPEAKER_03]: You had to go and get your passport and go and fly and so he ran away.
47:48 --> 47:58 [SPEAKER_03]: Rebecca and I took Tim Cook on a tour of the stages and that was and will came that day and that was great.
48:01 --> 48:07 [SPEAKER_03]: We're doing this big outdoor scene, would you come, you'd love to see it and sit, sure.
48:07 --> 48:08 [SPEAKER_03]: So we'll set the car for you.
48:08 --> 48:09 [SPEAKER_03]: You don't even have to worry about it.
48:10 --> 48:19 [SPEAKER_03]: So he shows up in the car and Harry, my assistant, I were walking out to meet Will, and we get him, we're walking towards the big state where we're doing the outdoor concert and stuff.
48:20 --> 48:29 [SPEAKER_03]: And he sees someone walking toward us and it's Peter Gabriel going off to his trailer, and Will looks and he says, is that, and I said, it is, and he said, lock me.
48:31 --> 48:55 [SPEAKER_03]: and he later said to me he said this is the best day of my life and I said don't tell your wife that okay and we just had like the best time and Peter is so funny and friendly and his son was great the girlfriend and it was just that it was glorious whether it was one of the best days ever and the other question about that day who whose idea was it for
48:58 --> 48:59 [SPEAKER_00]: That was called.
48:59 --> 49:01 [SPEAKER_00]: So that was totally a big shoutout.
49:01 --> 49:05 [SPEAKER_01]: And was that a lot or is that just like was that delivered?
49:05 --> 49:23 [SPEAKER_03]: It was really just, it was kind of like that he used this genius who, and we've played Stenson as our initial thing was that he was Peter Teele and Elon Musk and Zuckerberg and all of that.
49:24 --> 49:30 [SPEAKER_03]: And then he's become something else, but he comes from that sort of slightly oddly
49:36 --> 49:44 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, touch of the tism, and just kind of unaware and so rich that he doesn't have to be aware.
49:44 --> 49:48 [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it's, you know, and so he just said, what if I started playing on the piano?
49:48 --> 49:52 [SPEAKER_03]: And it's like, well, the only thing we could clear is chopsticks because that's public domain.
49:52 --> 49:54 [SPEAKER_03]: So you did that.
49:54 --> 50:03 [SPEAKER_03]: And then, you know, then he's playing with, you know, Laura Innes, who is just so brilliant and just her whole thing in that scene.
50:03 --> 50:05 [SPEAKER_00]: I can't wait to see her next season.
50:05 --> 50:06 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah.
50:06 --> 50:07 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, my God.
50:08 --> 50:08 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, my God.
50:08 --> 50:10 [SPEAKER_03]: It's a story in a season.
50:10 --> 50:31 [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, well, and just headache and ash and always, always Rebecca, and as I say to people, okay, if you're patient for season three for what happened to Juliet, Juliet is full Juliet from the first frame of season four to the variant is just all Juliet.
50:33 --> 50:35 [SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, so that's the Peter Gabriel thing.
50:35 --> 50:44 [SPEAKER_03]: So once we knew that I used the red rain in season two because I love Peter Gabriel and then that became a thing.
50:44 --> 50:46 [SPEAKER_03]: Well, what if he was there on silo day?
50:46 --> 50:47 [SPEAKER_03]: What if he went into a silo?
50:48 --> 50:50 [SPEAKER_03]: Make it 17 and that's why his music survived 17.
50:51 --> 51:17 [SPEAKER_00]: not okay long long answer perfect but uh great guy great great so now we'll next we'll meet the inventor of VR in 18 now so um i know that obviously you can say anything about season four for anyone who doesn't know coming July 8th so grateful to Apple for filming these back to back so that we don't have to wait years in between
51:18 --> 51:29 [SPEAKER_00]: Um, but I'm going to give you a list of things I hope are talked about and I'm wondering if you can tell me what percentage of them are addressed.
51:29 --> 51:30 [SPEAKER_00]: if that's okay.
51:30 --> 51:31 [SPEAKER_03]: Wow, this is gonna be fun.
51:32 --> 51:33 [SPEAKER_03]: We've never played this game before.
51:34 --> 51:37 [SPEAKER_03]: Well, you've seen the teaser trailer for Season 4.
51:37 --> 51:39 [SPEAKER_03]: So that, that is allowed?
51:39 --> 51:41 [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, we've seen the teaser trailer.
51:41 --> 51:44 [SPEAKER_00]: That's in the show notes, if I know one wants to see that.
51:44 --> 51:53 [SPEAKER_03]: And I will say that when Apple came up with that, it was like, okay, we're going to spend this reveal, we're gonna spend that reveal, we're gonna do this stuff, but,
51:54 --> 52:04 [SPEAKER_03]: It's interesting, for example, the idea that because you see in the teaser, there's Julia walking outside and other people and there's no clinic suits, okay.
52:04 --> 52:13 [SPEAKER_03]: But so many people have worked out just from seeing the drones and when Troy is killing Salah 17 and just other stuff, oh, maybe it's safe outside.
52:14 --> 52:19 [SPEAKER_03]: So that was the, and by, yeah, obviously we get to that in the first episode.
52:25 --> 52:27 [SPEAKER_03]: we can talk about any of that and we'll see how this goes.
52:27 --> 52:28 [SPEAKER_03]: Let's try.
52:28 --> 52:29 [SPEAKER_00]: All right.
52:29 --> 52:32 [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, because as a book reader, the forward vault door, I'm like, what?
52:32 --> 52:42 [SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, Daniel shows up in it seems to in the teaser trailer, meet Julie at somewhere and like we've been obsessing since season one does that go to
52:44 --> 52:50 [SPEAKER_00]: something in the books that we think or does it connect the other silos so very excited to find out about that.
52:50 --> 52:58 [SPEAKER_00]: But so I'm not going to ask about that or things like the fate of Helen which I know are going to be covered in the final season, but here's some other things that may or may not come up.
52:59 --> 53:02 [SPEAKER_00]: The syndrome hangs confession.
53:02 --> 53:08 [SPEAKER_00]: This is for my book, uh, co-host hangs confession that he's the reason the pop and nickels had to kill himself.
53:09 --> 53:22 [SPEAKER_00]: Um, the history of cryogenics in this world, Troy's past shifts, more information about what exactly happened to those damn lightbulbs, the discrepancy with the pre theft lightbulbs adding up to 400 years versus the 500 year
53:28 --> 53:40 [SPEAKER_00]: any silos in the 40 range, any religious activity from groups in silo 18 and whether Victor really used AI to write the books of the project.
53:41 --> 53:42 [SPEAKER_01]: Where do you want to start?
53:43 --> 53:44 [SPEAKER_00]: I want to
53:53 --> 54:07 [SPEAKER_01]: My interpretation of this is they know the practice super important, but they don't want anyone else to know it's super important because this is not an experiment actually going to run only a handful of people know that they're actually going to do this thing.
54:23 --> 54:26 [SPEAKER_01]: He would have poured every bit of his life and prayer into it, not let.
54:27 --> 54:27 [SPEAKER_01]: So may I do it?
54:27 --> 54:32 [SPEAKER_01]: And it's not what you tell someone that you're trying to make them so comfortable about maybe you'll have breakfast tomorrow.
54:35 --> 54:37 [SPEAKER_00]: And it won't come out of cubes in the wall here.
54:38 --> 54:40 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and that was basically our idea.
54:40 --> 54:49 [SPEAKER_03]: We also felt that there was a certain, you know, funjability for the leadership, which is there's the pack, but then there's the order, right?
54:49 --> 54:52 [SPEAKER_03]: And so that's, they don't, no one knows about that.
54:52 --> 54:53 [SPEAKER_03]: They know about it.
54:53 --> 54:58 [SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, that's really where the, the hard truths come in.
54:58 --> 54:59 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and then there's the directive.
55:00 --> 55:01 [SPEAKER_03]: And then there's the directive.
55:01 --> 55:03 [SPEAKER_03]: But, and there's a reveal on that in season four.
55:03 --> 55:06 [SPEAKER_03]: But the, um, and then there's the writer's room, which is above all of those.
55:08 --> 55:10 [SPEAKER_00]: And then the one you're am to rule the most.
55:10 --> 55:11 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah.
55:13 --> 55:16 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the problem with taking here's the two things.
55:16 --> 55:23 [SPEAKER_03]: The reason I took the credit created by was because when I did justified, I had developed for television by.
55:24 --> 55:26 [SPEAKER_03]: and then I saw the guys on Game of Thrones took creative by it.
55:26 --> 55:29 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, Jordan or Martin is still alive?
55:29 --> 55:31 [SPEAKER_03]: And he wrote the books, he created it.
55:31 --> 55:33 [SPEAKER_03]: And I was like, okay, you created it for television.
55:33 --> 55:34 [SPEAKER_03]: So I took that credit.
55:35 --> 55:35 [SPEAKER_03]: All fine and good.
55:36 --> 55:41 [SPEAKER_03]: The problem is I think from now on, I would take a credit scene, created for television by.
55:41 --> 55:53 [SPEAKER_03]: But even then, the reality is, it was created by you, and me, and Raymy, and Jess, and Jeff Wang, and Ingridetska, and all the people in that mini room, and then the broader next room.
55:53 --> 55:55 [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it is created by so many people.
55:55 --> 56:04 [SPEAKER_03]: I get to make the call, like, let's have this color and not that color, with the directors and with production designer, and it's sort of helping steer things.
56:04 --> 56:06 [SPEAKER_03]: But the real problem would take you create it by.
56:08 --> 56:12 [SPEAKER_03]: is when Connie and I first visited when she came to the set and we're in the production offices.
56:13 --> 56:15 [SPEAKER_03]: She just stopped and said, can I attention everyone?
56:16 --> 56:17 [SPEAKER_03]: Here is the creator.
56:18 --> 56:19 [SPEAKER_03]: And she didn't call me creator.
56:19 --> 56:20 [SPEAKER_03]: She called me creator.
56:21 --> 56:23 [SPEAKER_03]: And that then became my name for the rest of the run.
56:24 --> 56:30 [SPEAKER_03]: And wherever I had an office, where no matter what set or anything that or trailer, the sign would just say creator.
56:31 --> 56:36 [SPEAKER_03]: And so people just gave me such shit, and it's like that, but I support this.
56:37 --> 56:42 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm absolutely, I mean, it's like, it's hilarious, and it's also very true.
56:42 --> 56:49 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I think, like, this is the best my life has ever been because I get way too much threaded.
56:50 --> 56:51 [SPEAKER_01]: for something that I had very little to do with.
56:52 --> 57:08 [SPEAKER_01]: The people who worked on this spent, in grand-s case, only five years filming, but in other three years, you know, working on it, like by seven, you're, this part of the biggest investment professionally in one project in your life.
57:10 --> 57:12 [SPEAKER_03]: And it's been the best experience, hands down.
57:13 --> 57:15 [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely, hands down, top to bottom.
57:15 --> 57:17 [SPEAKER_01]: Totally, you've been able to work with me.
57:19 --> 57:23 [SPEAKER_01]: But I spent, I spent like eight months writing these books.
57:23 --> 57:31 [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm a small part of this show in my whole journey in this show.
57:31 --> 57:34 [SPEAKER_01]: I felt like a lucky passenger, like a tourist.
57:35 --> 57:40 [SPEAKER_01]: And it's been the best, this is the best experience in my life, professionally as well.
57:40 --> 57:41 [SPEAKER_01]: But I think,
57:43 --> 58:01 [SPEAKER_01]: My advice is to lean into the greater notion because you poured so much into this and I've told you privately, you know how much I love you and appreciate you, but I just think you've done amazing job and it's been life changing for me to have you involved in this.
58:01 --> 58:02 [SPEAKER_03]: It's been life changing for me.
58:02 --> 58:04 [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it's just such a team effort.
58:05 --> 58:06 [SPEAKER_03]: But anyway, let's go down your list.
58:06 --> 58:08 [SPEAKER_03]: So, we got sidetracked there.
58:11 --> 58:16 [SPEAKER_03]: The syndrome, the syndrome kind of, it's something, I believe we created, I can't remember if it's in the books.
58:17 --> 58:21 [SPEAKER_00]: We created it in ways of something when Charlotte's on some medication and she gets in trouble.
58:21 --> 58:25 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there's just, and honestly it was just something I love the answer.
58:26 --> 58:27 [SPEAKER_01]: A vector and this season.
58:28 --> 58:44 [SPEAKER_03]: then there's also just something that the judge says and see we think it's just the result of living in a place where you can't walk more than a couple hundred feet in the straight line you know that it's just something that gets created and we see it in buildings and it and yeah it's also better
58:45 --> 58:50 [SPEAKER_03]: He gets better because he's getting a better sense of the truth and actually having a reason.
58:50 --> 58:59 [SPEAKER_03]: So the syndrome kind of Peters out, Jenny Darment, one of the writers would always start bringing it up because this relates to the syndrome, but I'll be honest to kind of Peters out.
59:00 --> 59:01 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, okay.
59:02 --> 59:06 [SPEAKER_00]: I think we're going to probably hear about cryogenics and choice past shifts.
59:06 --> 59:07 [SPEAKER_00]: I'm assuming.
59:07 --> 59:07 [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
59:08 --> 59:12 [SPEAKER_00]: We saw a lot of who he sleeps a paper in that folder, the Victor had.
59:12 --> 59:21 [SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, well, I'm looking forward to, and I'm assuming Julie at coming to a reckoning of not remembering her father and meet Hank's possible role in that.
59:22 --> 59:34 [SPEAKER_03]: You know, I think we felt that with her getting the watch from Hank, um, that that was, I, you know, but we don't, you'll see what we do in season 4 and see if we drop the ball on that.
59:35 --> 59:35 [SPEAKER_03]: I will say this.
59:37 --> 59:40 [SPEAKER_03]: a lot of balls in the air, a lot of plates fitting.
59:40 --> 59:46 [SPEAKER_03]: We don't answer everything, but we answer, hopefully, all the big ticket items.
59:46 --> 59:51 [SPEAKER_03]: That one, we maybe didn't land that as well as we might have.
59:51 --> 59:57 [SPEAKER_03]: Now I feel bad, I'm gonna say we need to shoot a scene.
59:57 --> 01:00:01 [SPEAKER_00]: Will we see the light bulbs back in Carly's care?
01:00:03 --> 01:00:25 [SPEAKER_03]: No, I would say this, just the assumption is and when the show is done, if you do the timeline from when Juliet met the mayor and when Juliet became sheriff, let's say that that is or she fixes the gent, all that sort of thing in season one, from that to the
01:00:33 --> 01:00:44 [SPEAKER_03]: Um, so measured in much, yeah, I would say that that in terms of the light bulbs and stuff, tiny, this is a huge reveal, but it's not a, it's just that shit don't matter anymore.
01:00:44 --> 01:00:45 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
01:00:45 --> 01:00:45 [SPEAKER_00]: All right.
01:00:45 --> 01:00:48 [SPEAKER_00]: Will we find out about Bernard's technically 51 silos?
01:00:49 --> 01:00:50 [SPEAKER_01]: No, that's just a mistake.
01:00:50 --> 01:00:51 [SPEAKER_00]: That's just a mistake.
01:00:51 --> 01:00:51 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
01:00:52 --> 01:00:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, according according to Graham,
01:00:54 --> 01:00:54 [SPEAKER_01]: Kind of.
01:00:55 --> 01:01:01 [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm going to run with that and write in the 51st I low and it'll seem like it was all genius.
01:01:01 --> 01:01:04 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you made the 51st I low and call it Canada.
01:01:04 --> 01:01:05 [SPEAKER_03]: I will slap you.
01:01:05 --> 01:01:10 [SPEAKER_00]: It's watching, it's watching, D.C. We're Puerto Rico.
01:01:10 --> 01:01:15 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no, the it was this weird thing we got into is like,
01:01:16 --> 01:01:24 [SPEAKER_03]: We wanted groups of silos, and it was seven groups of seven, which, nice 49, and then the solid one, that's 50.
01:01:25 --> 01:01:35 [SPEAKER_03]: But there's, because of that, I think there is one group that actually has eight in it, and it's just, oh my God, the argument, yeah, I would tell you, and you might know this.
01:01:35 --> 01:01:42 [SPEAKER_03]: If you were to say to Eric Abelino or Jess Blair, just an almost any writer who was on set, just the word levels,
01:01:43 --> 01:01:46 [SPEAKER_03]: they'll start to shutter because what level is this on?
01:01:46 --> 01:01:47 [SPEAKER_03]: What level is that on?
01:01:47 --> 01:02:00 [SPEAKER_03]: But if this is about, so yeah, so that and poor Eric, if you mentioned the generator to him, he still just gets that was a rough go for the writer on the set.
01:02:00 --> 01:02:04 [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, well, I think the 51st silo is really the fringe made along the way.
01:02:07 --> 01:02:09 [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we thought that there might be an answer.
01:02:09 --> 01:02:10 [SPEAKER_00]: I'll say it's a book
01:02:14 --> 01:02:18 [SPEAKER_03]: Um, you know, what interesting you would say that that gets mentioned in season four.
01:02:18 --> 01:02:18 [SPEAKER_03]: I will say that.
01:02:18 --> 01:02:19 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
01:02:19 --> 01:02:19 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
01:02:19 --> 01:02:20 [SPEAKER_00]: All right.
01:02:20 --> 01:02:26 [SPEAKER_00]: Um, the length of the project for 100 years of light bulbs, 500 years of project.
01:02:26 --> 01:02:29 [SPEAKER_03]: They really didn't give enough light bulbs to season eight.
01:02:29 --> 01:02:29 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
01:02:30 --> 01:02:33 [SPEAKER_00]: I, I, I, I, I probably, there was like, theft along the way.
01:02:33 --> 01:02:37 [SPEAKER_03]: And that's just like lack of, you know, we, you didn't, you know, we didn't bad wiring.
01:02:38 --> 01:02:47 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, um, any, there's a line we are hoping for from Jimmy where you sure do weddings fast, how about funerals any religious activity from silo 18.
01:02:49 --> 01:02:56 [SPEAKER_03]: No, so there's something that you did in dust of this sort of religious cult coming up.
01:02:57 --> 01:03:04 [SPEAKER_03]: And we decided to stay away from anything religious because we didn't want to get into that.
01:03:05 --> 01:03:05 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
01:03:06 --> 01:03:08 [SPEAKER_00]: Any silos in the 40 range?
01:03:10 --> 01:03:10 [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
01:03:11 --> 01:03:22 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and so I would, I have to ask even though I think I know the answer, but just for the record, rumors are going around about a spin-off series in the works.
01:03:22 --> 01:03:30 [SPEAKER_00]: Now we know that you've been working on these books that you plan to release after the show to expand the silo world.
01:03:30 --> 01:03:32 [SPEAKER_00]: Any merit to the rumors.
01:03:32 --> 01:03:39 [SPEAKER_01]: Now, my guess is that's what caused the rumors, but I have no idea what people are talking about with the spin-off.
01:03:39 --> 01:03:46 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just writing books over excited about season four and that's as much as I do.
01:03:48 --> 01:04:03 [SPEAKER_03]: I would say that we would be really remiss if we didn't consider something that's, especially with the success of season three that we would be kind of stupid not to at least consider what other stories could be tell could be told.
01:04:03 --> 01:04:13 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Luke's pitch, my co-host is that Holston and Alice in prequel story where Patrick Kennedy and Deer Darling not dead yet Doris are their neighbors.
01:04:13 --> 01:04:15 [SPEAKER_00]: That's his pitch, just putting it up there.
01:04:15 --> 01:04:16 [SPEAKER_01]: That's now we could be a very different person.
01:04:17 --> 01:04:39 [SPEAKER_03]: more Patrick Kennedy I'm all I think he's his own spent off yeah so i mean that that was simply you know i like funny shows and i can tell that silo is not going to be a funny show and it's like i need at least one character who can land up and it's like nobody better than Rick Gomez i mean i've been working with him with his band of brothers and
01:04:40 --> 01:04:41 [SPEAKER_03]: And he's Jason Gray's a little big.
01:04:41 --> 01:04:43 [SPEAKER_03]: He steals every scene he's in.
01:04:43 --> 01:04:46 [SPEAKER_00]: I just learned that he and Steve's on have a production company together.
01:04:47 --> 01:04:48 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, oh yeah.
01:04:48 --> 01:04:50 [SPEAKER_03]: And I thought they'd been friend for years.
01:04:50 --> 01:04:52 [SPEAKER_03]: They only met like 2014 or something.
01:04:52 --> 01:04:58 [SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, they worked it when Rebecca and I met with Steve on Zoom.
01:04:58 --> 01:05:03 [SPEAKER_03]: He and Rick had worked at a whole gag for him to do on the Zoom.
01:05:03 --> 01:05:04 [SPEAKER_03]: And it was hilarious.
01:05:04 --> 01:05:06 [SPEAKER_03]: It was about roasting marshmallows and stuff.
01:05:06 --> 01:05:07 [SPEAKER_03]: And it was just all.
01:05:08 --> 01:05:20 [SPEAKER_03]: weird and funny, and it's like, oh, there's Steve's on here, and the thing about Rebecca is, you know, English, not her first language and stuff, and she is one of the funniest people I've ever met in my life.
01:05:20 --> 01:05:25 [SPEAKER_03]: She is just hysterical, but on camera and in the show, she's Juliette.
01:05:25 --> 01:05:35 [SPEAKER_03]: Juliette is not a laugh a minute, but in the scenes with Kennedy and the scenes with Jimmy, man, she just
01:05:38 --> 01:05:41 [SPEAKER_03]: they just absolutely just house on fire.
01:05:41 --> 01:05:49 [SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy watching Rebecca on set because she'll be tracking jokes between tapes and you're like, how are you going to get back in a character?
01:05:49 --> 01:05:52 [SPEAKER_01]: And then as soon as it's action time, she's july at.
01:05:53 --> 01:05:59 [SPEAKER_01]: And then in between, she's backs and you're like, it's, I have no acting abilities.
01:05:59 --> 01:06:05 [SPEAKER_01]: I understand how people do that, but watching some of the top of their game, do that is really, really disconcerting.
01:06:06 --> 01:06:12 [SPEAKER_03]: And they're all different, you know, there were some people who would really sort of be alone and do their stuff.
01:06:12 --> 01:06:16 [SPEAKER_03]: And then after the end of the day, it was just all, you know, sunshine and brightness.
01:06:16 --> 01:06:20 [SPEAKER_03]: But if it was deep dark stuff, they would be in there.
01:06:21 --> 01:06:26 [SPEAKER_03]: There's stuff that happens in season four where someone found Jess Hennick outside just sitting down.
01:06:28 --> 01:06:29 [SPEAKER_03]: nodding back in for.
01:06:30 --> 01:06:30 [SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
01:06:31 --> 01:06:31 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
01:06:31 --> 01:06:32 [SPEAKER_00]: That episode.
01:06:32 --> 01:06:33 [SPEAKER_00]: I can imagine.
01:06:33 --> 01:06:33 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
01:06:33 --> 01:06:35 [SPEAKER_03]: What we call the hell, I will tease that.
01:06:36 --> 01:06:37 [SPEAKER_03]: There's something we call the hell in episode.
01:06:38 --> 01:06:38 [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
01:06:39 --> 01:06:39 [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
01:06:40 --> 01:06:40 [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
01:06:40 --> 01:06:47 [SPEAKER_00]: Why no, Luke's very eager to micro host is he's dying to know what happened to Helen because we do find out in shift.
01:06:47 --> 01:06:50 [SPEAKER_00]: So I I'm very eager to see how it's handled as well.
01:06:51 --> 01:06:53 [SPEAKER_00]: I am curious about whether there's any
01:06:57 --> 01:07:11 [SPEAKER_00]: that's a character from the book who didn't make it in except that maybe Sam, the Daniel's friend from his military days seems like it almost mixed in but anyway bordering on future book boiler territory so I'll watch it.
01:07:12 --> 01:07:17 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think the betrayal comes from founders rather than from a friend.
01:07:18 --> 01:07:21 [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the shift books actually were at least three separate novels so there's
01:07:26 --> 01:07:28 [SPEAKER_01]: to adapt all that for TV.
01:07:28 --> 01:07:29 [SPEAKER_01]: Thank goodness.
01:07:29 --> 01:07:33 [SPEAKER_01]: Otherwise, no one would go out and buy the books right now.
01:07:33 --> 01:07:35 [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'm running over the time that I promised you guys.
01:07:36 --> 01:07:42 [SPEAKER_00]: Let me just wrap up with two one just in general, wanted to ask a cue.
01:07:42 --> 01:07:44 [SPEAKER_00]: We talked, I mentioned the silo books.
01:07:44 --> 01:07:49 [SPEAKER_00]: You know that you're holding them off until after any sand news that we can share with the fans.
01:07:50 --> 01:07:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's probably the next novel that comes out.
01:07:53 --> 01:07:57 [SPEAKER_01]: I've got an anthology of short stories that should be out in the next six weeks or so.
01:07:57 --> 01:08:09 [SPEAKER_01]: And then San hopefully in the first quarter of next year, but nothing silo related until I don't want books coming out in the middle of the show coming out.
01:08:09 --> 01:08:11 [SPEAKER_01]: So it's not even going to be after the finale.
01:08:11 --> 01:08:16 [SPEAKER_01]: I'll let the show breathe for a few months and the chatter to die down on that
01:08:19 --> 01:08:23 [SPEAKER_01]: You only get one chance to make a show like this and I don't want to step on it at all.
01:08:25 --> 01:08:28 [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'm looking forward to that and also I love the silo short stories to be on it.
01:08:28 --> 01:08:35 [SPEAKER_00]: So I hope some of the lore from that maybe makes it into the show, but also a few do more short stories.
01:08:35 --> 01:08:36 [SPEAKER_00]: That's that would be.
01:08:36 --> 01:08:39 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I have done some there there are in some special additions.
01:08:40 --> 01:08:41 [SPEAKER_01]: I think there's a
01:08:43 --> 01:08:51 [SPEAKER_01]: Harper College, and there's like stories of written just for different additions here and there, and so it's like poking line if you want to go try to collect them all.
01:08:51 --> 01:08:58 [SPEAKER_01]: I think there's like three more outside of the one G, probably no of like in the air in the mountains in the woods.
01:08:58 --> 01:09:02 [SPEAKER_01]: There's there's there's several other ones out there circulating as well.
01:09:03 --> 01:09:04 [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
01:09:05 --> 01:09:05 [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, all right.
01:09:05 --> 01:09:07 [SPEAKER_00]: I need to hunt these down there.
01:09:07 --> 01:09:08 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
01:09:13 --> 01:09:14 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, they're actually in additions.
01:09:14 --> 01:09:16 [SPEAKER_01]: They're like in special print additions.
01:09:17 --> 01:09:21 [SPEAKER_01]: And we can email back and forth.
01:09:22 --> 01:09:26 [SPEAKER_01]: I honestly don't even know whether they all are because different countries are doing different additions all the time.
01:09:27 --> 01:09:28 [SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes they'll ask me, I think.
01:09:29 --> 01:09:35 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, Barnes and Noble did their own edition of the of the books and they asked me if I'd write a short story for that and I did.
01:09:36 --> 01:09:37 [SPEAKER_01]: So it's only in that version.
01:09:38 --> 01:09:38 [SPEAKER_01]: And I kind of like that.
01:09:38 --> 01:09:44 [SPEAKER_01]: I love the, the, uh, the scarcity rather than just everything everywhere, you know.
01:09:45 --> 01:09:51 [SPEAKER_00]: Right, yeah, that's tricky with the Barnes and Noble because they're not here in Europe, so I don't have access to them then.
01:09:51 --> 01:09:54 [SPEAKER_00]: But I know people have been helpful with like star war stories in that regard.
01:09:55 --> 01:10:00 [SPEAKER_00]: So listeners, if you found any of these let me know and yeah, you will definitely email you about them.
01:10:00 --> 01:10:03 [SPEAKER_00]: Um, do you anything else that you're working on right now that you'd like to mention.
01:10:05 --> 01:10:28 [SPEAKER_01]: uh... i'm i'm just writing so much right now just uh... tons of short shorsing to do something for uh... light speed magazine with judges of atoms of god uh... he's doing a kickstarter on a new anthology and he and hired kicking around we've done three uh... triptics or two triptics uh... six books so we've edited of other people's works and some of mine were included and we're gonna uh... do another
01:10:34 --> 01:10:38 [SPEAKER_01]: and a lot of TV and don't stop in development that will probably never get made, but still fun to work on.
01:10:39 --> 01:10:46 [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I saw Spielberg has the sandwrights Spielberg do it.
01:10:46 --> 01:10:52 [SPEAKER_00]: Graham, is there anything else that so season four coming in July anything else that you want to mention?
01:10:53 --> 01:10:59 [SPEAKER_00]: And any member of the silo crew that you'd like to shout out or team that you don't think
01:11:01 --> 01:11:08 [SPEAKER_03]: Um, there's nothing I can talk about because I don't believe anything's real and so even the actors are saying the lines on a set.
01:11:10 --> 01:11:31 [SPEAKER_03]: Um, you know, what, the name of the pops of the mind is Reka and Reka's are on set for Targerfer and there's posts coming out where she and other people, which is like a stream of, you know, 10 photographs and if you look for her and get her name and you see it on Instagram, just incredible photographs of the whole production of the show.
01:11:32 --> 01:11:38 [SPEAKER_03]: Um, she was one of the beloved people on the show and, you know, just a real,
01:11:39 --> 01:11:42 [SPEAKER_03]: calming sweet wonderful presence with just a brilliant eye.
01:11:43 --> 01:11:51 [SPEAKER_03]: And, um, yeah, I don't know if that heard that there was so many people as he who knows, like everyone on the crew, just you just
01:11:52 --> 01:12:00 [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe I remember Poppy with the sound, and she would just go, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, and it's like, you know, what that, that shit helps a writer, you know?
01:12:00 --> 01:12:10 [SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, there was just so many people, Tony, the first lady that worked with Michael Dinner's unit, one of the most wonderful people.
01:12:10 --> 01:12:14 [SPEAKER_03]: She would say, give her morning talk, and then she would say, make it so.
01:12:14 --> 01:12:31 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, everyone would go, it's like Picard and she said no, it dates before that and it's from the Patrick O'Brien books, the Aubrey mature and Valerie make it so, so it's she, my god and her mother did make up for for the Muppet Show.
01:12:31 --> 01:12:56 [SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, it just needs all these lives and these people in Europe just part of this and I was only there a week a month and he was there a couple times a year or so and then Yeah, it was they make it so yeah, they make it so you know all these people have worked a lot of amazing shows but that everyone to a person when we were doing the route which was like a three day festivity in London
01:12:57 --> 01:13:14 [SPEAKER_01]: Like everyone to a person said it was the most like family they ever had and the most fun they ever had and there's something really special about the dynamics in the chemistry of the casting crew like something really unique happened on the cello and That's pretty rare
01:13:15 --> 01:13:16 [SPEAKER_00]: I think it comes across on screen.
01:13:16 --> 01:13:18 [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's one reason.
01:13:18 --> 01:13:25 [SPEAKER_00]: Of course, yeah, there's the mind blowing literal bombs going off and people waking off in cryo and committing genocide and all that.
01:13:25 --> 01:13:32 [SPEAKER_00]: But I think, honestly, the reason people care about things like that is because we spend all season learning to care about Daniel and Helen.
01:13:32 --> 01:13:37 [SPEAKER_00]: So we care, I'll say, my most improved character from the book to screen is Helen.
01:13:37 --> 01:13:43 [SPEAKER_00]: I love what, just when we extend with her, I love the journalism background.
01:13:45 --> 01:14:01 [SPEAKER_00]: And just, you know, I really knew it was coming at the end of Episode 9 and it's still ripped my heart out and it's because obviously so much love goes in from the cast, from the crew, from you guys into creating these characters and making us feel them.
01:14:02 --> 01:14:03 [SPEAKER_03]: But at least we know that.
01:14:04 --> 01:14:10 [SPEAKER_03]: Peter Gabriel in his son, we're saying that's, you know, it's the important thing that's the important.
01:14:10 --> 01:14:14 [SPEAKER_03]: I've laid for a room, but it's fun talking to you, fun talking to you always.
01:14:14 --> 01:14:16 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, thank you so much.
01:14:16 --> 01:14:20 [SPEAKER_03]: It's been the best, it's been the best, it's been the best run of my career.
01:14:21 --> 01:14:23 [SPEAKER_03]: You guys, cheers, thank you so much.
01:14:23 --> 01:14:24 [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you so much, thank you.
01:14:24 --> 01:14:25 [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you so much, thank you.
01:14:25 --> 01:14:26 [SPEAKER_00]: Bye.
01:14:26 --> 01:14:26 [SPEAKER_01]: Good luck, more luck.
01:14:35 --> 01:14:37 [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you again, Graham Yost and Hugh Howie.
01:14:37 --> 01:14:47 [SPEAKER_00]: I will keep this outro brief, Luke and I will again be back within the week with our mailbag wrap up and then a separate episode after that breaking down this season for teaser.
01:14:47 --> 01:15:00 [SPEAKER_00]: So if you're listening to this episode as it's released, you do still have a day or so if you want to send in your thoughts and theories for the final mailbag as well to woolshiftustpodcast at gmail.com you'll find that linked in the show notes.
01:15:00 --> 01:15:10 [SPEAKER_00]: Books boilers are okay in your emails, but then those elements will be discussed in the separate book club season wrap, which will come out after the two episodes with Luke.
01:15:10 --> 01:15:19 [SPEAKER_00]: So listen to the regular episodes for more information about the book club if you're wondering what that is and the new member shout out as well.
01:15:20 --> 01:15:29 [SPEAKER_00]: And please do join us also for the discussion on the lower-hounds discord where you'll find separate spoiler chats per episode plus a separate chat for book discussions.
01:15:30 --> 01:15:43 [SPEAKER_00]: And after these final silo season three episodes, Luke and I will go back to our Dune coverage and in January, we will do full silo style coverage of Neural Mancer on Apple TV.
01:15:43 --> 01:15:50 [SPEAKER_00]: So that means Abbey and I are going to talk books, Abbey lives in Tokyo where the TV show like the movie is set.
01:15:50 --> 01:16:06 [SPEAKER_00]: And Luke after some discussion has agreed to go spoiler free for the public episodes so that we can have the fun tinfoil hot time as well for this show and then I think we will follow up with some book episodes with Luke after the fact.
01:16:07 --> 01:16:10 [SPEAKER_00]: So stay tuned for all of that.
01:16:10 --> 01:16:22 [SPEAKER_00]: Of course, in the meantime, do check out the other podcasts in the Lower Hounds Network, parent pod, the Lower Hounds is doing weekly lanterns coverage, which I recommend to any silo fans.
01:16:22 --> 01:16:24 [SPEAKER_00]: I will be joining for the season wrap over there.
01:16:25 --> 01:16:29 [SPEAKER_00]: They also just released into the west, a special episode about Katherine O'Hara and an
01:16:32 --> 01:16:44 [SPEAKER_00]: And I will be hosting a forgotten island episode about the new animated movie coming up soon with Palo Filipino American who's going to talk us through Filipino mythology, so that will be fun.
01:16:45 --> 01:16:49 [SPEAKER_00]: And there will be some film festival coverage coming up as well.
01:16:49 --> 01:16:55 [SPEAKER_00]: And then in October, John and I will start weekly vision quest coverage and clay face as well.
01:16:56 --> 01:17:00 [SPEAKER_00]: not to mention all the fun spooked over stuff, both in that feed and this one.
01:17:01 --> 01:17:12 [SPEAKER_00]: If that's not enough rings of power fans, you should know that rings and rituals just started there, rings of power season two, rewatch pod, leading up to the launch of season three in November.
01:17:13 --> 01:17:20 [SPEAKER_00]: Dungeons and due rags is also covering lanterns on a weekly basis and you have time to catch up
01:17:25 --> 01:17:26 [SPEAKER_00]: And that's it.
01:17:26 --> 01:17:32 [SPEAKER_00]: Luke and I will be back in your ear soon with more Silent Talk and until then, I think you how he said it best.
