Sidetrack - 100th Episode Extravaganza! (with David Lorehound)

How are we still doing this thing? To celebrate our 100th(ish) episode, we’ve brought in a heavy hitter: returning guest David from the Lorehounds. David picks our brains about our first two seasons, talking topics like our friendship, what we’ve learned from podcasting, conversations with our listeners, and why musicians always pretend to know albums they’ve never heard. Here’s looking forward to 200!

00:00 --> 00:18 [SPEAKER_02]: just like a good having to kiss the boot of the guy in episode four last so we by the way everybody what is this episode this is a free wheeling conversation about podcasting and this show thank you so much for for being here with us he said 20 minutes into the podcast right that's still brand right like what are we doing like a station identification
00:31 --> 00:31 [SPEAKER_02]: Hey, I'm Mark.
00:32 --> 00:34 [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm Nicole, and this is never mind the music.
00:35 --> 00:37 [SPEAKER_01]: What are we even doing today, Mark?
00:37 --> 00:39 [SPEAKER_02]: I actually don't know, David, what are we doing today?
00:39 --> 00:41 [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome, David, once again.
00:41 --> 00:41 [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.
00:42 --> 00:52 [SPEAKER_03]: I think we're talking because it's your... Bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump,
00:52 --> 00:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Is that even a big deal?
00:54 --> 00:55 [SPEAKER_01]: It feels like a big deal to me.
00:56 --> 00:58 [SPEAKER_03]: I think it's a big deal for you guys.
00:58 --> 01:02 [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, we're, I have no idea how many episodes the Laura Hounds have put out.
01:02 --> 01:04 [SPEAKER_03]: We're just a content mill.
01:04 --> 01:15 [SPEAKER_03]: But I think it's a big deal when it's like, it's not like your carousthwisher or some of these other broadcasters or filming like that, this is a big deal that you guys put out a hundred episodes.
01:15 --> 01:17 [SPEAKER_03]: That is kind of actually a big deal.
01:17 --> 01:20 [SPEAKER_03]: In the, hey, I have a podcast on the side world.
01:21 --> 01:27 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, we thought it was big enough deal that we had to invite one of the best to moderate this episode.
01:28 --> 01:40 [SPEAKER_02]: So moderate folks who don't already know this is David from the Lohound's David, of course, very notable podcaster on his own and in his own right with his allies in the Lohounds, but has also been on our pod a few times.
01:40 --> 01:40 [SPEAKER_02]: So
01:41 --> 01:53 [SPEAKER_02]: I think first would be the SNL episode maybe, and then you were on, you were on a sidetrack earlier this season talking about the generational music theorem, which does still come up randomly on pods from time to time.
01:54 --> 02:07 [SPEAKER_03]: honest, I think that it was such an interesting conversation, it was just such an interesting topic, a topical research, too, and it's like some of this stuff really works, then some of it doesn't apply, and I hear new music, I go, is that, you know, like it really has me thinking all the time.
02:07 --> 02:08 [SPEAKER_03]: Keeps giving.
02:08 --> 02:08 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
02:09 --> 02:19 [SPEAKER_02]: I think the question of whether this is a big deal or not leads me to one of sidestepped the fact that we have had bonus episodes like that SNL episode, which technically make
02:20 --> 02:35 [SPEAKER_02]: past the 100th, but this is the 100th numbered episode though the 100th like main pod with a song title a part of the title that probably would be in season four if we're all still alive.
02:36 --> 02:37 [SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know we're celebrating.
02:37 --> 02:49 [SPEAKER_03]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
02:51 --> 02:56 [SPEAKER_00]: I love how you don't even like humor that it's me that might on the spring.
02:57 --> 03:01 [SPEAKER_01]: It's not even anywhere in the assumption that Nicole's the keeper of the keys.
03:02 --> 03:03 [SPEAKER_02]: She has access to it.
03:03 --> 03:03 [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
03:03 --> 03:08 [SPEAKER_01]: So I messed up once I went through it once and he was like, can you actually not touch this?
03:08 --> 03:09 [SPEAKER_00]: No, actually love it.
03:09 --> 03:11 [SPEAKER_02]: I love it when you touch this spreadsheet, what I don't love it is you.
03:11 --> 03:17 [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
03:17 --> 03:42 [SPEAKER_02]: What I love is the we are prepping for season three everybody that's one of the the aspects of being at the end of season two and so we're planning it out and you've got a nice is we will is magenta the right color but a magenta column a magenta row means Nicole is suggesting an episode topic and I love it but what I don't love is if you like just drag something and move it to the end of the season or something and I'm like
03:45 --> 03:46 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I got it.
03:46 --> 03:51 [SPEAKER_01]: I just get really hyper focused on things and like I'm going to change everything, but then I realize that that's not my job here.
03:51 --> 03:53 [SPEAKER_03]: I did that one bit of summer time job.
03:54 --> 04:02 [SPEAKER_03]: I completely rearranged the office like on a Sunday morning or Saturday and my boss and in the other senior employee came in like there.
04:03 --> 04:03 [SPEAKER_03]: Fuck did you do?
04:03 --> 04:04 [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, I don't know.
04:04 --> 04:05 [SPEAKER_03]: I just cut it.
04:05 --> 04:06 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to take some time.
04:06 --> 04:08 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's better.
04:08 --> 04:10 [SPEAKER_03]: They were completely shocked.
04:10 --> 04:10 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
04:11 --> 04:12 [SPEAKER_01]: So that's the vibe.
04:12 --> 04:14 [SPEAKER_01]: What's the spreadsheet say, Mark?
04:14 --> 04:17 [SPEAKER_02]: The spreadsheet is confusing to me because the spreadsheet.
04:18 --> 04:20 [SPEAKER_02]: This spreadsheet is divided by season.
04:20 --> 04:31 [SPEAKER_02]: So I have a season one spreadsheet that has, if we start with our bonus episode at the beginning, that was like our 10-minute sneak peek or whatever, that starts on column eight and goes to column 68.
04:32 --> 04:36 [SPEAKER_02]: So with the bonus episodes, does that mean there's 60 in that episode?
04:36 --> 04:43 [SPEAKER_02]: And then season two goes from row, not column row four to, or this would be 48.
04:48 --> 05:10 [SPEAKER_02]: in raw account but that that doesn't make sense because you can just drop this in as long as we're ahead of the game you can just drop this in at the hundredth mark well I'm dropping it in next week so How long have you guys been podcast what's the date when's the first podcast the first podcast recorded that public is
05:11 --> 05:13 [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, the first those are two different things, right?
05:13 --> 05:18 [SPEAKER_02]: So the first published podcast is on September 10th, 2024.
05:19 --> 05:27 [SPEAKER_02]: But the earliest recorded podcast that survived to see the light of day is a dashboard confessional, right?
05:27 --> 05:29 [SPEAKER_02]: We have never done a dashboard confessional episode.
05:30 --> 05:32 [SPEAKER_02]: So it's going to be third eye blind.
05:35 --> 05:39 [SPEAKER_02]: We talked about how we did a massive dump of episodes before a season one debuted.
05:39 --> 05:43 [SPEAKER_02]: That episode was recorded on Groundhog Day 2024.
05:43 --> 05:48 [SPEAKER_02]: So February 2nd, and then the first episode released in September.
05:49 --> 05:53 [SPEAKER_03]: We're just shy of your two year anniversary for published podcast.
05:53 --> 05:53 [SPEAKER_03]: That's right.
05:53 --> 06:00 [SPEAKER_03]: This season ends just about two years after that is actually amazing in that you put out consistency.
06:01 --> 06:03 [SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, when I'm talking to other people in the industry,
06:04 --> 06:26 [SPEAKER_03]: and we're looking at scales of podcasts there's like this like 1% of 1% sort of big name stuff and you know if you go into your app and you're like what's popular you see a lot of those consistently like what's popular shows what's popular episodes big news outlets big bro podcasters and then the next tier down are podcasts that are bigger than the lore hounds
06:27 --> 06:34 [SPEAKER_03]: They're bigger and downloads, but they're not necessarily bigger in consistency and length of time and total episodes.
06:35 --> 06:45 [SPEAKER_03]: And so as you get down deeper in this level, most podcasts, like a lot of these, like literally are just some dads in a basement with a microphone, and they get like 10 downloads.
06:45 --> 06:48 [SPEAKER_03]: And they burn out after a couple of months or you know, whatever.
06:49 --> 06:56 [SPEAKER_03]: and that you've gone two years with over a hundred episodes that is abnormal.
06:56 --> 06:59 [SPEAKER_03]: That's like you're in the top 10 to 15 percent range.
06:59 --> 07:07 [SPEAKER_03]: Not in terms of download numbers, but in terms of we are putting consistent quality podcasts out into the space.
07:07 --> 07:33 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, we noticed that when we were thinking of a name for this podcast that was a long iterative process, because every name that we came up with, we'd search, search it out, to see if it was already taken, and a lot of them were like COVID projects that had three or four episodes out, and they also just wasted a great name because- Yeah, exactly exactly, exactly, totally, like I was somebody said something to me the other day,
07:35 --> 07:59 [SPEAKER_03]: You know, never mind mind and then if you look at the music right and then you look at the logo and it's a brain or it's ahead, you know, with the record player and it's like, you're the name and the logo are just so inspired and I just I love I don't know how the process came to naming the podcast John literally made up our name and like less than five minutes one week.
08:00 --> 08:03 [SPEAKER_01]: that's not what our process was.
08:03 --> 08:15 [SPEAKER_01]: If I could scroll back at the two years of ridiculous text messages between mean mark that are like, we both use the voice to talk, the voice to text things, so it's like it could be an email, but I
08:17 --> 08:19 [SPEAKER_01]: One of us isn't checking their email regularly.
08:19 --> 08:20 [SPEAKER_01]: So texting is the way.
08:20 --> 08:23 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like low key hate email.
08:23 --> 08:24 [SPEAKER_01]: No, I'm just not into it.
08:24 --> 08:26 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I'm just not into them over a email.
08:26 --> 08:33 [SPEAKER_01]: But if we could scroll back millions of pages of text messages to get to the conversation about choosing a name.
08:33 --> 08:35 [SPEAKER_01]: I would love to revisit some of the
08:36 --> 08:37 [SPEAKER_01]: the non-starred.
08:37 --> 08:38 [SPEAKER_03]: That would be a fun side track someday, right?
08:38 --> 08:43 [SPEAKER_03]: Like going through just looking like in, you know, a year or three or something, like, what were the names that we went through?
08:44 --> 08:45 [SPEAKER_03]: Like just going through the list.
08:45 --> 08:45 [SPEAKER_03]: That would be kind of a bad idea.
08:45 --> 08:47 [SPEAKER_02]: They're either bad or they're taken.
08:47 --> 08:55 [SPEAKER_02]: It's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's
08:55 --> 08:56 [SPEAKER_02]: methods.
08:56 --> 08:59 [SPEAKER_02]: You mentioned the logo, how cool the logo is.
08:59 --> 09:01 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's a good time as any to shout out.
09:02 --> 09:07 [SPEAKER_02]: Ari Wells, one of my oldest friends who's an awesome graphic designer from San Diego.
09:07 --> 09:10 [SPEAKER_02]: She's with agency called Heart Agency.
09:10 --> 09:12 [SPEAKER_02]: She designed this logo.
09:12 --> 09:18 [SPEAKER_02]: She designed my band, the Slacket MX logo, which actually has a exist in physical reality.
09:18 --> 09:19 [SPEAKER_02]: Like, she created the character,
09:24 --> 09:27 [SPEAKER_02]: on a label maker that then is incorporated into our written logo.
09:28 --> 09:30 [SPEAKER_02]: She also designed my old band dream.
09:30 --> 09:33 [SPEAKER_02]: If you Google, Stalkenemix is easy to find.
09:33 --> 09:37 [SPEAKER_02]: But if you Google dream Hydra on Facebook, you'll see these dragons.
09:37 --> 09:38 [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, sorry.
09:38 --> 09:38 [SPEAKER_02]: I say dragons.
09:38 --> 09:39 [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, my God.
09:39 --> 09:39 [SPEAKER_02]: It's a Hydra.
09:40 --> 09:42 [SPEAKER_02]: And it's I love that logo so much.
09:42 --> 09:43 [SPEAKER_02]: She is such a good graphic designer.
09:44 --> 09:45 [SPEAKER_02]: And she does not get shattered out enough.
09:46 --> 09:49 [SPEAKER_01]: And she made a ton of mock-ups too.
09:49 --> 09:50 [SPEAKER_01]: Like that was one of maybe 50.
09:52 --> 09:52 [SPEAKER_01]: iteration.
09:52 --> 09:54 [SPEAKER_01]: And they're all good with that one's good.
09:54 --> 09:55 [SPEAKER_01]: And they're all good.
09:55 --> 09:57 [SPEAKER_01]: I'd like about the logo that we never really talked about.
09:57 --> 09:59 [SPEAKER_01]: I like that it's pink and blue.
09:59 --> 10:02 [SPEAKER_01]: And we offer like, I don't know, it's kind of like gender in a way.
10:02 --> 10:03 [SPEAKER_01]: That's interesting.
10:03 --> 10:13 [SPEAKER_03]: And I think matches our dynamic a little bit, but that's like a very, it's a record and the word and the stub of the word mind are the same color.
10:14 --> 10:14 [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
10:14 --> 10:15 [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
10:15 --> 10:17 [SPEAKER_03]: So the brain and the word mind are
10:18 --> 10:35 [SPEAKER_01]: The creative process worked in the naming of our podcast, and that we, we didn't suddenly, even though I probably wanted to a bunch of times, Mark never lets me settle for the first or second or tenth idea, and we push, push, push, and I think we landed in something that really feels genuine too.
10:36 --> 10:40 [SPEAKER_01]: like our personalities and the, I'll say the mission of this pot.
10:40 --> 10:47 [SPEAKER_01]: I've been in faculty meetings all morning, so I'm saying, I'm like, I'm using my big girl words and I'll try to turn it off.
10:47 --> 10:52 [SPEAKER_03]: But the other remarkable thing at this stage, two years and a hundred whatever episodes in,
10:53 --> 10:55 [SPEAKER_03]: is that you're still talking to each other.
10:55 --> 10:57 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you're still writing.
10:57 --> 10:59 [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like 10, 12, 10 years, maybe more.
10:59 --> 11:01 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but you haven't killed each other yet, right?
11:01 --> 11:03 [SPEAKER_02]: So like, because it's a lot of work.
11:03 --> 11:05 [SPEAKER_03]: It's a lot of work to produce a podcast.
11:05 --> 11:12 [SPEAKER_03]: There's a technical side, the pre and post productions, the publishing stuff, outlines.
11:13 --> 11:27 [SPEAKER_03]: Frick load of work and then there's you know, are we business and what do we do with revenue and all these things there's a lot that you're like Oh, let's have a podcast and then you're like, oh, no, this is like a way bigger endeavor than you think it might be It's not just talking into a microphone.
11:27 --> 11:28 [SPEAKER_02]: It has been 10 years.
11:28 --> 11:30 [SPEAKER_02]: I think that we've been friends.
11:30 --> 11:30 [SPEAKER_02]: I think
11:31 --> 11:39 [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it was so soon after I moved here that we were both bringing our then toddlers to the same day crazy.
11:39 --> 11:41 [SPEAKER_02]: So it's got to be about 10 years ago.
11:42 --> 11:48 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think I've talked about this on pods that I've had creative partnerships that it's not that they've obviously I've been in bands that have broken up.
11:48 --> 11:51 [SPEAKER_02]: But I've also been in partnerships.
11:51 --> 11:58 [SPEAKER_02]: where it's just so intense for so long that you have to kind of soft break up.
11:58 --> 11:59 [SPEAKER_02]: Cool, you have to cool down.
11:59 --> 12:00 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, totally.
12:00 --> 12:07 [SPEAKER_02]: I wrote a pop musical with a writer, name Alexander Castaneda, who's a great writer, since moved on to other industries.
12:08 --> 12:16 [SPEAKER_02]: but he wrote the book, I wrote the lyrics in the music, and we got it produced by a university student group, like I was really proud of it.
12:16 --> 12:23 [SPEAKER_02]: One of the best things I've ever written to this day in terms of some of those songs, I would say, and I almost kind of never talked.
12:23 --> 12:35 [SPEAKER_02]: Not that I never talked to them again, but it was like he wanted out on it at that point, because it was so intense, so all day, so long, so just emotionally draining, dealing with the other creators involved, that it wasn't even that it was,
12:36 --> 12:37 [SPEAKER_02]: negative experience.
12:37 --> 12:47 [SPEAKER_02]: It was just like so much that I never, even though I enjoyed working with him, I have never worked with him again, and not to say I never would, but I don't think we're that.
12:47 --> 12:52 [SPEAKER_02]: And I think we, and if season one was it was a lot doing look February.
12:56 --> 12:56 [SPEAKER_01]: It was a lot.
12:56 --> 13:00 [SPEAKER_01]: And we didn't like know what if it was going anywhere.
13:00 --> 13:03 [SPEAKER_02]: February to September, we recorded 50 episodes.
13:03 --> 13:04 [SPEAKER_01]: It was too many.
13:04 --> 13:09 [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe that's what the law hounds do because you guys have multiple week coverages.
13:09 --> 13:12 [SPEAKER_03]: But for us, it's like we're running down a hill.
13:13 --> 13:34 [SPEAKER_03]: Like if we start covering a show, we have to cover the show and that means turning out the show and so we're just we're letting gravity like we're like, you know, little kids, you know, when they run down the hill and then we get to the bottom like, and then we look up and there's another hill, I'm like, oh shit, so then we go up top of the hill and so it's a, you know, it's an entirely different pacing for us.
13:39 --> 13:42 [SPEAKER_02]: no offense, Nicole, that I'll share the producing role.
13:42 --> 13:49 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm happy to kind of have our division of labor, but I don't also have the capacity to be like, you know what, you take pro tools this week.
13:50 --> 13:56 [SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna take the next episode whereas you, John and Alicia, all I think kind of evenly split that load.
13:56 --> 13:57 [SPEAKER_02]: Am I incorrect?
13:57 --> 14:05 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we kind of have this thing of who's the lead or first chair and then that person whoever takes the lead on a podcast
14:10 --> 14:18 [SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, any pre-production scheduling, outlining, and sometimes then we'll split off the duties, we're like, okay, we'll all produce if you do the outlines, okay, cool, right?
14:18 --> 14:37 [SPEAKER_03]: So, but, and then because we all edit, and we all are reasonable with our editing skills, we all use three different programs as well, that breaks up the work a little bit, and then usually the person who edits is also the person who publishes, who actually puts it on to the platform and spits it out.
14:37 --> 15:01 [SPEAKER_01]: you know what for us I actually think we would have significantly more creative conflict if I edited and I just I think it's better left to mark he's much more detail oriented than I am and I think our podcast is a great song quality to it and I I would quit early to go to the beach and watch Love Island
15:03 --> 15:10 [SPEAKER_01]: or he to rivalry for the fifth time and he'll just hyper fixate and his basement and make a really good product like it's just our nature.
15:10 --> 15:15 [SPEAKER_01]: I think we'd fight a lot because he'd be like, you need to step it up and editing and it'd be like, I don't know it's boring.
15:15 --> 15:16 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to do it.
15:16 --> 15:17 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I just do.
15:18 --> 15:18 [SPEAKER_03]: There was some point.
15:18 --> 15:19 [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if you remember this market.
15:19 --> 15:25 [SPEAKER_03]: There was some point when you and I were talking about something and we're doing some crossover thing or something that was interrelated.
15:26 --> 15:48 [SPEAKER_03]: It might have been during season one still and we were debating stereo versus mono on podcasting and because we're voice only podcast and we don't care about audio quality and hearing stereo effects on this kind of stuff for us it's a smaller file it's a quicker processing you know when you process the audio file out of the editor and that kind of stuff and we were like on discord you and I were just like
15:56 --> 16:04 [SPEAKER_02]: And I think I was on to talk about the music in severance, and folks, you've got two ears most of us, right?
16:04 --> 16:09 [SPEAKER_02]: And we're listening to music that is created to take advantage of both of those ears.
16:09 --> 16:11 [SPEAKER_02]: And if it's collapsed, it should just be one file in the middle.
16:12 --> 16:13 [SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes things cancel out.
16:13 --> 16:17 [SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes a sound that is slightly out of phase with
16:17 --> 16:18 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, let's do it right.
16:18 --> 16:19 [SPEAKER_02]: We'll literally cancel out.
16:19 --> 16:28 [SPEAKER_02]: And so whatever we were listening to mono to my ears sounded like crap and I was probably really insistently like you got to do a stereo and you were like you can't do stereo.
16:28 --> 16:34 [SPEAKER_03]: We signed a contract the two lower pounds that we would never do stereo and it's written in stone.
16:35 --> 16:43 [SPEAKER_02]: It's been trying to time capsule and it was like it's literally existed since the 1960s you all could join us and do stereo and
16:44 --> 16:48 [SPEAKER_02]: I think Nicole's probably right, but it's not just me.
16:48 --> 16:53 [SPEAKER_02]: Like, so we've had some great guests on our second season, right?
16:53 --> 17:00 [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm not going to put it in a buddy on blast, but most of them are many of them are podcasters and audio professionals.
17:00 --> 17:04 [SPEAKER_02]: And there was one episode where the morning it came out.
17:04 --> 17:08 [SPEAKER_02]: This person texted me just like, my voice sounds terrible.
17:08 --> 17:10 [SPEAKER_02]: Can you do this, do that, do that?
17:11 --> 17:26 [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm like, you sound fine to me, but this person has the way that their voice sounds on the podcast, and I went in there, and I changed it, and I did a re-uplove, and I felt very seen in that moment, because that's how I am sometimes.
17:26 --> 17:28 [SPEAKER_03]: Like, working countered himself in the world.
17:28 --> 17:33 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like, and it was very healthy for him in a great growth moment.
17:33 --> 17:53 [SPEAKER_02]: There's millions of us just like a good having to kiss the boot of the guy in episode four last so we by the way everybody what is this episode this is a freewheeling conversation about podcasting and this show thank you so much for for being here with us he said 20 minutes into the podcast right that's still brand right like what are we doing like a station identification
17:56 --> 18:11 [SPEAKER_03]: I was so happy it wasn't just me, but yeah, sorry if I asked you out, but no, it was just a learning process because it was the same with John and with Alicia and then John Alicia and I like John and I had to go through something and then Alicia and John and I have to like figure each other out.
18:11 --> 18:20 [SPEAKER_03]: John and I've met each other in person maybe three or four times, I've met Marilyn and person once, John and I are family's friends and so we go back.
18:21 --> 18:24 [SPEAKER_03]: I think I met you guys once in person, yeah.
18:24 --> 18:39 [SPEAKER_03]: So we're doing all of this collaboration without having been in each other's spaces and where these flat two-dimensional or text-based people and so to learn like what are the things?
18:39 --> 18:42 [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, there's a lot of theory of mind stuff there, I would assume.
18:42 --> 18:44 [SPEAKER_03]: Like this is like straight up in your zone.
18:45 --> 18:55 [SPEAKER_03]: But it's like we're trying to figure each other out at distance in an intensely creative process where we're trying to get product out the door.
18:55 --> 18:59 [SPEAKER_03]: And again, for Laura Hound's, we're volume, it's a femoral.
19:00 --> 19:08 [SPEAKER_03]: How many people are listening to us, you know, and so we're just like about, you know, get the freaking podcast out the door, man, where your content is very different as well.
19:08 --> 19:10 [SPEAKER_01]: And we have the benefit.
19:11 --> 19:17 [SPEAKER_01]: of entering this project knowing each other pretty well, knowing each other professionally very well, yeah.
19:17 --> 19:27 [SPEAKER_01]: And how we handle each other in collaborative environments, like we had worked together on a very small, oh, maybe smaller scale projects before, but my school stuff.
19:28 --> 19:47 [SPEAKER_01]: So like from the minute we first met you and I had just really great banter we could just the app at each other for a long time and it always felt very organic so when we entered a space to be really intentional with the conversations I think it just allowed us a lot of room for growth of what was already a really great foundation.
19:48 --> 20:01 [SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's important to note that most of the time we record, we are not just talking heads on the screen that we are in person with each other, and I think that adds to a level of chemistry that we have just being in the same space with each other.
20:01 --> 20:11 [SPEAKER_01]: And honestly, this is going to get kind of sentimental mark, but I just genuinely enjoy spending time with you to the point that if we don't record for a while, I'm like, oh, I kind of like,
20:12 --> 20:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Do I miss Mark what a gross feeling.
20:16 --> 20:18 [SPEAKER_02]: Folks, we're recording on Tuesday.
20:18 --> 20:21 [SPEAKER_02]: So this episode's going to come out for us next week.
20:21 --> 20:25 [SPEAKER_02]: The episode that came out today was the Elana's more a set episode.
20:25 --> 20:27 [SPEAKER_02]: And I just peak peak.
20:28 --> 20:28 [SPEAKER_03]: Never mind the music.
20:29 --> 20:30 [SPEAKER_03]: By the way, I have a comment.
20:30 --> 20:30 [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
20:30 --> 20:35 [SPEAKER_02]: I like that episode a lot and I majorly uncomfortably overshare in that episode.
20:35 --> 20:41 [SPEAKER_02]: I really embarrassing story from my life and that would not have happened if we were recording remote.
20:42 --> 20:50 [SPEAKER_02]: I know I'm not trying to like doom the lorhounds to a lack of emotionality because you all record remote, but there is something about
20:51 --> 20:56 [SPEAKER_02]: The therapy session I'm getting with my friend is exploiting me.
20:56 --> 20:58 [SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying?
20:58 --> 21:00 [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, so I know I wouldn't feel comfortable.
21:00 --> 21:03 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, we talk about also telehealth, how effective is that?
21:03 --> 21:08 [SPEAKER_02]: I think I need like a person to like, feel
21:09 --> 21:32 [SPEAKER_02]: heard by sort of in a room that lets me at least open up a little bit and I don't know if honestly I don't know if that even those moments make the podcast better or not they're cathartic for me and I leave them in and kind of yolo right like we'll see if a student or my boss listens to this and judges me but like we've cut a lot of stuff out like there are sometimes we'll share things and then we take a beat and we're like actually
21:33 --> 21:35 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want any of that public, like, cut that out.
21:36 --> 21:38 [SPEAKER_02]: Not at all like that, but that has happened, yeah.
21:38 --> 21:38 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
21:38 --> 21:43 [SPEAKER_01]: Mainly it's sort of what we overshare, like personal identifiers, about lives, or like, oh, no.
21:43 --> 21:45 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't need to talk about anything.
21:45 --> 21:47 [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, my address, that includes these three numbers.
21:47 --> 21:48 [SPEAKER_02]: My phone number.
22:03 --> 22:09 [SPEAKER_03]: I threw out some questions, it's very unorganized thing, just ahead some thoughts as we were prepping for this.
22:09 --> 22:19 [SPEAKER_03]: And that was one of my questions is like, what have you each discovered about yourself through the process of podcasting?
22:19 --> 22:20 [SPEAKER_03]: I think a question.
22:21 --> 22:26 [SPEAKER_03]: People who stick with podcasting, it's fulfilling a path way of self-expression, right?
22:26 --> 22:28 [SPEAKER_03]: And it's a new form.
22:28 --> 22:29 [SPEAKER_03]: It's a new art form in a way.
22:29 --> 22:31 [SPEAKER_03]: It's a new way of creativity.
22:32 --> 22:36 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm finding ways that I'm creative that I never had expression for before.
22:37 --> 22:38 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm the very cerebral person.
22:38 --> 22:40 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm a very verbal person.
22:40 --> 22:45 [SPEAKER_03]: And podcasting, I'm like, oh, like, there is deep, deep creativity here.
22:45 --> 22:49 [SPEAKER_03]: When you can express feelings and have self-expression in these ways,
22:50 --> 22:51 [SPEAKER_03]: And you didn't have that before.
22:51 --> 22:56 [SPEAKER_03]: It's like, oh, I didn't, you know, you now know something that you didn't know before.
22:56 --> 22:58 [SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's it's a really interesting thing.
22:58 --> 23:04 [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm just curious to like, where have you guys ended up as people through the process of podcasting?
23:04 --> 23:05 [SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate that question.
23:05 --> 23:14 [SPEAKER_01]: And for me, like, I'm not sure if it's like new moments of discovery, but I've definitely been validated in a lot of stuff through the podcast process.
23:14 --> 23:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Like I knew.
23:16 --> 23:20 [SPEAKER_01]: As a teacher, I am good at making connections between different areas of content.
23:20 --> 23:28 [SPEAKER_01]: And people have told me that I'm quick-witted before and I never really got that or internalized it.
23:28 --> 23:35 [SPEAKER_01]: But sometimes I listen back on the podcast and I think I understand what that means now in a way that I didn't before.
23:35 --> 23:37 [SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was just like a weird, quick-witted.
23:37 --> 23:38 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, what does that even mean?
23:39 --> 23:41 [SPEAKER_01]: But now I listen to myself and like, oh, like,
23:42 --> 23:46 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I guess I'm quick-witted, and I think that that's a really cool thing to be.
23:47 --> 23:50 [SPEAKER_03]: And the fact that you can hear yourself is a new tool.
23:50 --> 23:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh, she is so cute and funny and smart.
23:54 --> 24:06 [SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes I listen to myself and I like listen to what Mark says, when I'm like listening back on the podcast driving, whatever, and I'll respond in my head and then Nicole on the radio has that same response and I'm like,
24:07 --> 24:12 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm really consistent with the same page with my think-thought process.
24:12 --> 24:14 [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not sure if that's a new creative discovery.
24:15 --> 24:15 [SPEAKER_01]: I have.
24:15 --> 24:18 [SPEAKER_03]: But it's a new appreciation of yourself that you've taken on.
24:18 --> 24:22 [SPEAKER_02]: I almost feel like I have not the opposite.
24:23 --> 24:23 [SPEAKER_02]: Uh-huh.
24:24 --> 24:25 [SPEAKER_02]: Now I'm not saying about you.
24:25 --> 24:26 [SPEAKER_02]: I'm saying about myself.
24:26 --> 24:31 [SPEAKER_02]: The kind of complimentary opposite experience of, I guess I've learned.
24:32 --> 24:38 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if humility is the right word, but I, in, very, very certain that I can't think of everything now.
24:38 --> 24:44 [SPEAKER_02]: Like, I will sit for four hours listening to one song a million times and deconstructing it.
24:44 --> 24:49 [SPEAKER_02]: And sometimes I've got charts that I'm doing by hand and stuff and figuring out the piano and recording these episodes.
24:49 --> 24:52 [SPEAKER_02]: And then you're like, oh yeah, it's the blue album and it's the blues and it's sad.
24:52 --> 24:55 [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm like, how the hell did I not think of that?
24:55 --> 25:00 [SPEAKER_02]: And like obviously, there's sometimes there's emotional, social, cultural things that you bring.
25:00 --> 25:06 [SPEAKER_02]: But sometimes it's even musical observations that like, I learned a long time to be humble about my musical opinions.
25:07 --> 25:07 [SPEAKER_02]: Really?
25:08 --> 25:09 [SPEAKER_02]: God, there's no more.
25:09 --> 25:12 [SPEAKER_02]: The more you, the more you train.
25:13 --> 25:14 [SPEAKER_02]: I think this is the way it should be.
25:14 --> 25:15 [SPEAKER_02]: At least it's way it was for me.
25:15 --> 25:24 [SPEAKER_02]: The more you realize just we talked about this on our episode about or with Rob Harvella just like being wrong about something like, I don't even, I won't even say, if you notice
25:25 --> 25:40 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't talk shit on our podcast like I don't ever say anything bad about a band really unless it's like a month I'll talk about people that seem to be monster people, but you're never gonna hear me say a song sucks because I know that in five years I might be like actually that's now my favorite song
25:41 --> 25:51 [SPEAKER_02]: And so, I've learned a long time ago not to judge a book by its cover in terms of music, but even just my insights on music, like I, it doesn't matter how much I can become an expert at a particular moment.
25:51 --> 25:53 [SPEAKER_02]: And someone can just walk up and be like, oh yeah, and that.
25:53 --> 25:57 [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm like, I can't believe I'm so my topic that I couldn't see that.
25:57 --> 26:03 [SPEAKER_02]: And that Nicole, you in particular, though, are guests have helped with that, too, have really like awakened to me to that?
26:03 --> 26:04 [SPEAKER_02]: I guess I could say.
26:04 --> 26:10 [SPEAKER_03]: I was listening to, I didn't finish it yet, but I was listening to the Lannis Morse episode today.
26:11 --> 26:17 [SPEAKER_03]: And somewhere deep in the, what are the verb tenses that you were talking about Mark?
26:17 --> 26:18 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that's the key word.
26:18 --> 26:19 [SPEAKER_03]: You were the one.
26:19 --> 26:21 [SPEAKER_03]: Motel auxiliary verbs, I think it was.
26:21 --> 26:22 [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, that's it.
26:22 --> 26:23 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my gosh.
26:23 --> 26:24 [SPEAKER_03]: Motel auxiliary.
26:24 --> 26:27 [SPEAKER_03]: And I just hearing Nicole's eyes.
26:27 --> 26:30 [SPEAKER_03]: I can physically hear, I can hear her eyes rolling back.
26:30 --> 26:42 [SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes it's really hard David, you know, sometimes it's just really hard and I appreciate my friend and his beautiful mind about music, but it's the, the pit the anecdotes.
26:43 --> 26:47 [SPEAKER_03]: But this, you brought up the hidden track on that album.
26:57 --> 27:00 [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah, because I forgot about it completely, yeah, completely.
27:00 --> 27:10 [SPEAKER_03]: And then you were, but you were open to the fact that you forgot about it, when you were open to the fact that, oh, yeah, that I remember a little bit that that was a cool song or whatever.
27:10 --> 27:13 [SPEAKER_03]: And then, of course, I mean, I'm waiting and I'm waiting and then you drop it in and I'm like, OK, cool.
27:14 --> 27:40 [SPEAKER_03]: But like hearing that dynamic of where you actually were able to take something musically that Nicole had brought up and actually like be affected by it was like a really cool I don't I don't want to say evolution or step or just like it was a cool moment in me having listened to you guys over the last couple of years that was like a fresh moment and it it may have happened in other times but it caught me because I was listening for that
27:41 --> 28:08 [SPEAKER_01]: I think as professors were really primed for that that we're going to we live so much in our worlds and our job is to bring other people in and share the information with them and sometimes they have these aha moments in this outside perspective that you just never start from that angle and maybe in the first year or two of teaching I'd be really strong-armed about pushing my perspective but after years I I welcome other people's point of view and I think that that's the funnest part of the
28:11 --> 28:11 [SPEAKER_01]: too.
28:12 --> 28:14 [SPEAKER_02]: I love that positive way of...
28:14 --> 28:18 [SPEAKER_02]: I'll look because I again feel like I see this so differently.
28:19 --> 28:26 [SPEAKER_02]: I think I can't stress enough how much musicians are self-consciously acting like they know about whatever.
28:27 --> 28:52 [SPEAKER_02]: I could point this to being a grad student as a really acute example where someone would be like, oh yeah, Peter Maxwell Davies, eight songs from AdKing, you know that and everyone's like, yeah, and like, I'm like, make note to self, listen to Peter Maxwell Davies, like, everybody's pretending like they know everything, but I think what it is is with music, people are just really obsessed with certain artists and you can't be obsessed with every artist.
28:52 --> 28:54 [SPEAKER_02]: And so you're always, especially if you're dealing with a musician,
28:55 --> 29:10 [SPEAKER_02]: If you try to talk to me about what's a band that I know that like a lot like okay I know every single nickel creek song majorly released right and I could or things like that like and I'm a nickel I see you they're laughing at me like you people.
29:11 --> 29:27 [SPEAKER_02]: You're so wrong for not being canned, but like you could remember when the lighthouse tail was on country radio in 2002 or whatever and you're going to say I like Lincoln Creek and I'm going to be like well what do you think of rest of my life and you're going to and you might as a musician be like well maybe I should know that song so I'm going to be like yeah
29:28 --> 29:47 [SPEAKER_02]: And there's this temptation to always just be kind of yying, like one of my students will be like mentioning some Boston hardcore punk band that I should know about, and then I feel like I should know about, and I kind of have this temptation to smile and not and go, yeah, I can remember one time on our podcast, I lied to you.
29:49 --> 29:52 [SPEAKER_02]: by two confession and in editing it, I felt guilty.
29:52 --> 30:00 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't remember what it was, but I said, I caught myself saying I had heard some album before.
30:01 --> 30:02 [SPEAKER_02]: And I literally said, oh, yeah, I listened to that.
30:02 --> 30:04 [SPEAKER_02]: Like, oh, yeah, I've heard it or something like that.
30:05 --> 30:08 [SPEAKER_02]: And when I edited it, I was like, why did I say that?
30:08 --> 30:11 [SPEAKER_02]: Like, I heard the band, I've heard the singer who ever was.
30:11 --> 30:11 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't remember what it was.
30:12 --> 30:21 [SPEAKER_02]: I've heard the song, but why did I have to answer, and I just all it took in my edit was like, deleting that word, yeah, or that phrase.
30:21 --> 30:22 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I've heard it before.
30:23 --> 30:37 [SPEAKER_02]: To free myself of this pressure that I have, like, sure I can be humble about being introduced to things, but there's also this fear of not knowing something that everybody would view as essential that I know, and it's somehow a travesty that I don't know it.
30:37 --> 30:41 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, oh, you've never heard the Beatles before, like it would be this kind of wild thing.
30:41 --> 30:47 [SPEAKER_03]: So it's like double stacked for you because you're a professional and an academic.
30:48 --> 30:52 [SPEAKER_01]: triple stacked in a way kind of itself concept relies around his style of music.
30:52 --> 30:57 [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, and if I walked into the high fidelity music store with what's his name and what's his name?
30:57 --> 31:01 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and John Kusag right.
31:01 --> 31:03 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah, yeah, we know this bands.
31:03 --> 31:03 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
31:03 --> 31:05 [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you know, and everybody would have opinions about the music.
31:06 --> 31:13 [SPEAKER_03]: And you have you think of you stack a doubly because you're of your professor.
31:13 --> 31:23 [SPEAKER_02]: Right, we're when you're in, I mentioned grad school because it's worse when you're in context where people are kind of performing like everybody's kind of trying to especially some of the like conservatory kind of environments.
31:23 --> 31:26 [SPEAKER_02]: Everybody's like, we don't all have TA positions.
31:27 --> 31:29 [SPEAKER_02]: Only four of us out of the ten or whatever are going to get a T.A.
31:29 --> 31:30 [SPEAKER_02]: ship.
31:30 --> 31:33 [SPEAKER_02]: That's a lot of money you save better kind of show off a little bit.
31:33 --> 31:35 [SPEAKER_02]: That's the pressure of a little bit in these environments.
31:36 --> 31:37 [SPEAKER_02]: And we I want to talk in season three.
31:38 --> 31:39 [SPEAKER_02]: I've already got it.
31:39 --> 31:40 [SPEAKER_02]: It's in magenta on the schedule.
31:40 --> 31:42 [SPEAKER_02]: I think we're going to talk about the virus.
31:42 --> 31:44 [SPEAKER_02]: We always say like, let's talk about it.
31:44 --> 31:44 [SPEAKER_02]: We're going to talk.
31:44 --> 31:46 [SPEAKER_02]: We're going to complain about higher ed in the future.
31:46 --> 31:50 [SPEAKER_02]: And that kind of environment is one of the worst.
31:50 --> 31:55 [SPEAKER_02]: I think there are other environments where musicians are all kind of showing off a little bit.
31:56 --> 32:02 [SPEAKER_02]: I can't wait till I'm like lying to my kid, where one of my kids is going to be like, hey, did you hear the new dada da?
32:02 --> 32:03 [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm going to act, try to act cool and say it.
32:03 --> 32:08 [SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, I'm learning to stop myself and just be, no, I've never heard it.
32:08 --> 32:11 [SPEAKER_02]: That makes me a bad person help me be a good person.
32:11 --> 32:13 [SPEAKER_02]: Like that's what makes you a bad person.
32:13 --> 32:14 [SPEAKER_02]: But that's what I feel like.
32:15 --> 32:16 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, good shame.
32:16 --> 32:16 [SPEAKER_03]: Don't you?
32:16 --> 32:17 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, shame me.
32:17 --> 32:20 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to reframe it for you right reframing.
32:20 --> 32:28 [SPEAKER_01]: So when you say, oh, I've never heard it like you are giving that other person the gift of getting to share that information.
32:28 --> 32:40 [SPEAKER_01]: When you say to a student, he or she or they are telling you the name of that Boston rock band to prove their worth to you to prove to you the same feeling that you had as a grad student that they know everything.
32:40 --> 32:42 [SPEAKER_01]: They're they're citing the obscure band.
32:43 --> 32:59 [SPEAKER_01]: so they can show you that they're on the inside of this knowledge so when you say oh I don't know it can you share it with me you're putting them in a power position to let them teach you and that's like a developmentally formative moment to give to your student to give to your kid to let them teach you stuff
33:00 --> 33:13 [SPEAKER_02]: And I have them walk away being like, yeah, I am hot shit with my It's just, especially with the generational differences, like it's easy for me to just be like, I don't know the stuff you know and you don't know the stuff I know Let's share their pollen.
33:14 --> 33:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I was born in the 1900s.
33:15 --> 33:19 [SPEAKER_01]: So tell me more about this new band you discovered called sublime.
33:19 --> 33:20 [SPEAKER_01]: So segue segue.
33:23 --> 33:25 [SPEAKER_03]: What do your families think about your podcasting careers?
33:26 --> 33:28 [SPEAKER_03]: Because it's right.
33:28 --> 33:31 [SPEAKER_03]: I know whatever, you know, the endeavors about your podcast.
33:31 --> 33:35 [SPEAKER_02]: Dude, my wife, she does listen, maybe not to everything, but she listens.
33:36 --> 33:37 [SPEAKER_02]: She might not listen to that.
33:37 --> 33:48 [SPEAKER_02]: I think sometimes side tracks, she'll skip one, but high wife, she's so used to projects that don't necessarily pan out to when you direct benefit for the family, like whether it's
33:48 --> 34:05 [SPEAKER_02]: musical projects, creative academic projects, like I've got my paycheck and that's good and sometimes I can make some extra stuff on the side, but the fact is most of the creative projects I've done in the 20 plus years since I've known her have not led to any direct benefit for her.
34:05 --> 34:08 [SPEAKER_02]: So thank you for the permission to do stuff like this.
34:09 --> 34:11 [SPEAKER_02]: So she is supportive of this, but
34:14 --> 34:20 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think expectations that it's going to change anything because if it wasn't this, I'd be doing something else.
34:21 --> 34:22 [SPEAKER_02]: It'd be a never band I knew exactly.
34:23 --> 34:27 [SPEAKER_02]: So I'd be the other music project role-playing game system or something.
34:27 --> 34:29 [SPEAKER_02]: That's something else I want to talk about in the in the new season.
34:29 --> 34:31 [SPEAKER_02]: Not not role-playing, but role-playing as it interests X with teaching.
34:32 --> 34:33 [SPEAKER_02]: Anyways, sneak peek for that.
34:33 --> 34:34 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, Nicole, what do you think?
34:35 --> 34:36 [SPEAKER_02]: Does your husband listen?
34:36 --> 34:44 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he listens, but he'll like recommend it to people, he'll like tell friends about it, and his friends listen.
34:45 --> 34:54 [SPEAKER_01]: So if he listens, he's doing it very like under the radar, like we don't, we're not sitting around the dinner table and be like, oh, that'll last more set up, so it was great.
34:54 --> 34:55 [SPEAKER_01]: But there he's he's supportive.
34:56 --> 34:58 [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a cool thing to do.
34:59 --> 35:04 [SPEAKER_01]: And me and my husband always have loved music and we've always loved sharing new music with each other.
35:04 --> 35:11 [SPEAKER_01]: And we often share, we share Spotify so sometimes if he's in his car and I put Spotify on my phone at home.
35:12 --> 35:15 [SPEAKER_01]: I take over his radio and we listen to things together that way.
35:17 --> 35:20 [SPEAKER_01]: So he one day he texted me, he's like, what are you doing right now?
35:20 --> 35:21 [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, I'm just like working in the garden.
35:21 --> 35:24 [SPEAKER_01]: He's like, are you listening to like, Alison chains unplugged?
35:24 --> 35:26 [SPEAKER_01]: I sure am.
35:27 --> 35:28 [SPEAKER_01]: He's like, it's really, really good.
35:28 --> 35:32 [SPEAKER_01]: So it's been like a really fun way to connect.
35:33 --> 35:44 [SPEAKER_01]: But just because I find myself listening to different music as a result of this project, and being like kind of turned on and like feeling activated towards different types of music, which is very welcome.
35:45 --> 35:48 [SPEAKER_01]: So I think he's getting the by-product of that, which is kind of cool.
35:51 --> 36:14 [SPEAKER_03]: for never mind the music record in blocks right you you'll you'll bundle up and you'll you'll pre record a bunch of stuff but then every once in a while there's a little blood brain barrier transfer crossing happening and you guys are on a regular series coverage with us right television show which is a weekly commitment
36:15 --> 36:16 [SPEAKER_03]: it's different.
36:16 --> 36:17 [SPEAKER_03]: It's watching the show.
36:18 --> 36:20 [SPEAKER_01]: It's a lot like when we didn't play our best together.
36:20 --> 36:21 [SPEAKER_01]: It was great.
36:21 --> 36:22 [SPEAKER_01]: I really enjoyed it.
36:22 --> 36:26 [SPEAKER_01]: It was like, it felt much more pressure than we have.
36:26 --> 36:26 [SPEAKER_03]: Interesting.
36:27 --> 36:29 [SPEAKER_01]: And I know we record we're getting better.
36:30 --> 36:41 [SPEAKER_01]: I think season one, we did have to just do like marathon recording sessions and definitely that was for me challenging like endurance wise to be so fun and witty for so long.
36:41 --> 36:41 [SPEAKER_01]: Right.
36:41 --> 36:41 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
36:42 --> 36:44 [SPEAKER_03]: Pouring your energy into the competition.
36:45 --> 36:47 [SPEAKER_01]: Do like two episodes on a sidetrack.
36:47 --> 36:49 [SPEAKER_01]: We found just like our sweet spot for recording session.
36:50 --> 37:00 [SPEAKER_01]: we know when to call it if like we're just kind of losing steam for the day we'll know when to say like let's pick it up next time and we're trying to build our schedule to not put so much pressure on ourselves.
37:01 --> 37:15 [SPEAKER_01]: But I will say like to go back to the family piece I think that my family's really thankful because before when we would all hang out like our families would get together and mark and I would just shop talk and yapp and I know my
37:19 --> 37:24 [SPEAKER_01]: spiraling about higher ed stuff and we're just me and Mark's wife or vibing too, but it's different.
37:24 --> 37:26 [SPEAKER_01]: So I think that they're just thankful.
37:27 --> 37:31 [SPEAKER_01]: My family's thankful for me to have a space to just have get it out of my head.
37:31 --> 37:32 [SPEAKER_01]: So it's right.
37:32 --> 37:33 [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not talking to them.
37:35 --> 37:37 [SPEAKER_02]: The negative bill is I haven't hung out with your husband in a long time.
37:38 --> 37:41 [SPEAKER_02]: The families don't get together because you and I get it out of our system enough.
37:41 --> 37:42 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
37:42 --> 37:48 [SPEAKER_02]: So, so are my eldest and your daughter have grown apart in the years, sadly, as they become middle schoolers.
37:48 --> 37:50 [SPEAKER_01]: But that was organic too.
37:50 --> 37:56 [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that my daughter's now would be more into playing and hanging out with your daughter and not your son.
37:56 --> 37:58 [SPEAKER_01]: And they used to like, nap holding hands at dinner.
37:58 --> 37:59 [SPEAKER_01]: Like they would just,
38:00 --> 38:04 [SPEAKER_01]: They'd be on the mats together and they'd be getting yelled at because they were talking too much and no one else could sleep.
38:05 --> 38:07 [SPEAKER_01]: So, they have whatever we have, I think.
38:07 --> 38:08 [SPEAKER_02]: I miss Nath.
38:08 --> 38:09 [SPEAKER_01]: I miss Nath.
38:09 --> 38:10 [SPEAKER_01]: I miss Nath.
38:10 --> 38:10 [SPEAKER_03]: I miss Nath.
38:11 --> 38:12 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
38:12 --> 38:13 [SPEAKER_03]: It's funny.
38:13 --> 38:19 [SPEAKER_03]: Nicole, because during Pluribus, your daughter would come into the room and sit on the thing behind you or whatever.
38:20 --> 38:23 [SPEAKER_03]: You know, my daughter's growing up was like, yeah, my dad's a podcaster, you know.
38:24 --> 38:25 [SPEAKER_03]: It's like, oh, what is this?
38:25 --> 38:26 [SPEAKER_03]: This is a weird thing.
38:26 --> 38:28 [SPEAKER_03]: And I work from home, both my wife and I work from home.
38:30 --> 38:41 [SPEAKER_03]: her use and growing up is going to be radically different from mine where both my parents worked nine to five jobs out of the house and we were home alone and all that kind of stuff.
38:41 --> 38:42 [SPEAKER_03]: So it's just funny.
38:42 --> 38:43 [SPEAKER_03]: It's interesting to think about stuff.
38:43 --> 38:55 [SPEAKER_01]: My kid thinks it's cool that I have a podcast like she brags about it a little bit to her friends or and I share if her friends are talking about a song and we'll go, I did a podcast about that song and they're always like,
38:57 --> 38:59 [SPEAKER_01]: Do your students listen?
38:59 --> 38:59 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
39:00 --> 39:00 [SPEAKER_01]: They do.
39:02 --> 39:03 [SPEAKER_02]: I think mostly no.
39:03 --> 39:05 [SPEAKER_02]: They're every now and then.
39:05 --> 39:06 [SPEAKER_02]: Somebody will make a mention.
39:07 --> 39:10 [SPEAKER_02]: Like I posted on the course website, a link or whatever, but I don't.
39:11 --> 39:14 [SPEAKER_02]: The fact is some of it would actually be quite relevant and helpful.
39:14 --> 39:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
39:16 --> 39:17 [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if I went to your lectures.
39:17 --> 39:18 [SPEAKER_03]: Well, I was talking to my podcast.
39:18 --> 39:19 [SPEAKER_03]: I did a lot of things.
39:19 --> 39:19 [SPEAKER_03]: I did a lot of things.
39:20 --> 39:20 [SPEAKER_03]: I did a lot of things.
39:20 --> 39:20 [SPEAKER_03]: I did a lot of things.
39:20 --> 39:21 [SPEAKER_03]: I did a lot of things.
39:21 --> 39:21 [SPEAKER_03]: I did a lot of things.
39:21 --> 39:22 [SPEAKER_03]: I did a lot of things.
39:22 --> 39:23 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:23 --> 39:24 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:24 --> 39:25 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:25 --> 39:25 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:25 --> 39:26 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:26 --> 39:27 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:27 --> 39:28 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:28 --> 39:30 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:30 --> 39:30 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:30 --> 39:32 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:32 --> 39:33 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:33 --> 39:34 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:34 --> 39:34 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:34 --> 39:37 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:37 --> 39:38 [SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of things.
39:38 --> 39:38 [SPEAKER_02]: I
39:40 --> 39:45 [SPEAKER_02]: I have found for the, like if I want to talk about a lot of more set, syncopation, right?
39:45 --> 39:49 [SPEAKER_02]: I've got these pretty cool examples of songs to illustrate that.
39:50 --> 39:56 [SPEAKER_02]: And they might be better than whatever I actually have in my original lesson plan, just because I've had more time to cook them.
39:57 --> 40:01 [SPEAKER_02]: And so it's like, gosh, I kind of wish I could just make the students all listen, but I don't.
40:01 --> 40:03 [SPEAKER_03]: some of them have heard it.
40:03 --> 40:06 [SPEAKER_03]: It's creepy when the professors like here's my series of books.
40:06 --> 40:08 [SPEAKER_03]: You must buy them to call it.
40:09 --> 40:09 [SPEAKER_03]: Totally.
40:09 --> 40:14 [SPEAKER_01]: I often crowd source information for podcasts if it's like a band.
40:14 --> 40:19 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know when I know we're recording or I was talking about cold branding on the pit.
40:19 --> 40:20 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah right.
40:20 --> 40:23 [SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, what do you guys know about this?
40:23 --> 40:24 [SPEAKER_01]: Really nothing.
40:24 --> 40:25 [SPEAKER_01]: Like we've never heard it.
40:25 --> 40:25 [SPEAKER_01]: But
40:27 --> 40:39 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, or if I know, I use as a way in to students sometimes if they seem disconnected or I'm a little bit worried about them and I noticed that they have a Justin Bieber t-shirt on.
40:39 --> 40:44 [SPEAKER_01]: I'll say, oh, like, hey, I'm recording an episode about Justin Bieber this week.
40:44 --> 40:49 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, what's your favorite Justin Bieber song or like what's, you know, so I use it as a trick.
40:49 --> 40:50 [SPEAKER_02]: I think.
40:51 --> 40:57 [SPEAKER_02]: You, your situation, whether it's professionally or family-wise, there's a little more novelty.
40:57 --> 41:05 [SPEAKER_02]: This, this for me, is it business where everybody is performing and everybody's got their different ways.
41:05 --> 41:11 [SPEAKER_02]: They're performing like, whether I have a student who's in a band maybe, but also they're do some theater.
41:11 --> 41:15 [SPEAKER_02]: They do some acting like, this is a little less unique maybe.
41:15 --> 41:17 [SPEAKER_02]: So to this, and the same thing has,
41:17 --> 41:22 [SPEAKER_03]: overtaken academic circles like their tons of academic podcasts.
41:22 --> 41:37 [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure I'm not the only person at my college with a podcast, but like in the same way that my family does my kid think it's cool like that I'm a podcast or I don't know does my kid think it's cool that I'm in a band like which of those is is more cool for my kids?
41:37 --> 41:39 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know maybe they're both an uncool
41:44 --> 41:47 [SPEAKER_02]: though we're talking about the brain and psychology.
41:48 --> 41:51 [SPEAKER_02]: It's sort of like, is framed still around songs.
41:51 --> 41:54 [SPEAKER_02]: It's framed as a music podcast, at least the main episodes are.
41:55 --> 41:58 [SPEAKER_02]: And so I'm not gonna see a music major and be like, oh yeah, music.
41:58 --> 42:00 [SPEAKER_02]: You know what I have a music put like, where is you?
42:00 --> 42:02 [SPEAKER_02]: If you see that Justin Bieber, be sure.
42:03 --> 42:07 [SPEAKER_02]: That is an awesome opportunity to connect on the music side of it with me.
42:07 --> 42:14 [SPEAKER_02]: It would almost be like my student would have to have a t-shirt that has like a picture of Carl Jung on it.
42:14 --> 42:16 [SPEAKER_02]: And then I can be like, oh, I have a psychology podcast, right?
42:17 --> 42:18 [SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean?
42:18 --> 42:24 [SPEAKER_02]: It's a weirder segue with me because we're always talking about songs, right?
42:24 --> 42:29 [SPEAKER_01]: It does make me appear cooler to my students to say I have a music podcast.
42:29 --> 42:30 [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
42:30 --> 42:35 [SPEAKER_01]: It is my definitely my fun fact that I share around the icebreaker table.
42:35 --> 42:40 [SPEAKER_01]: And for you, it's just, it's a, maybe coded is more obligatory in your service.
42:40 --> 42:44 [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, yeah, one, yeah, one interesting little sign question goes on.
42:44 --> 42:47 [SPEAKER_01]: How does she have time to do it all?
42:48 --> 42:51 [SPEAKER_02]: I actually think in certain circles what is more
42:53 --> 43:16 [SPEAKER_02]: unique or whatever about our show is that our show is kind of like the coffee table book of analysis like it's not academic like just the fact and this is not to spoil the academic higher ed bashing episode but like the fact that we talk about pop songs would be in of itself controversial in some music departments in this country right the fact that we're not talking about
43:17 --> 43:26 [SPEAKER_02]: classical music or jazz or something like that is already transgressive to a certain extent, and that we're talking about it in a very detailed way.
43:27 --> 43:34 [SPEAKER_02]: So the fact that it's kind of like pop both in the topic, but also are kind of casual way.
43:34 --> 43:36 [SPEAKER_02]: We're casually taking something very seriously.
43:37 --> 43:51 [SPEAKER_02]: That is actually more unique where I bet there's a lot of people with doctorates in what I have a doctor it in who might have a podcast that's very seriously and earnestly talking about this stuff, but not talking about all-annis more set, right?
43:51 --> 43:54 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and they're not as fun and funny as we are.
43:54 --> 43:57 [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe there do we need to give them a chance, but probably not.
43:58 --> 43:59 [SPEAKER_01]: No, no thanks.
44:13 --> 44:17 [SPEAKER_03]: When you guys sent us your demo reel as it were, hey man, hey, take a listen.
44:18 --> 44:21 [SPEAKER_03]: I remember I was like, is that like something?
44:21 --> 44:22 [SPEAKER_02]: Probably like when was that summer?
44:23 --> 44:24 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
44:24 --> 44:27 [SPEAKER_03]: When you had, there's an email, so I know I have the email somewhere.
44:28 --> 44:38 [SPEAKER_03]: And then Anthony from Properly Howard and Electric Bucaloo texted me and he was like, you got to sign these guys.
44:39 --> 44:39 [SPEAKER_03]: Sign out.
44:41 --> 44:44 [SPEAKER_03]: And I was like, I don't think I had listened to the demos yet at that point.
44:45 --> 44:47 [SPEAKER_03]: And then I was like, huh, okay.
44:47 --> 44:53 [SPEAKER_03]: Well, if Anthony's texting me, like, I got a, like, he doesn't, this is like out of character behavior.
44:53 --> 44:56 [SPEAKER_03]: And then it was just like, oh, yeah, no question.
44:56 --> 44:59 [SPEAKER_03]: Hands down, these are our people, this is our tribe.
44:59 --> 45:01 [SPEAKER_03]: We need to bring these people into our tribe.
45:01 --> 45:04 [SPEAKER_03]: July 10th, 2024, and I misspelled Alicia.
45:05 --> 45:10 [SPEAKER_02]: And it's crazy because to this day, thank you, Anthony.
45:11 --> 45:12 [SPEAKER_02]: I have never met Anthony.
45:15 --> 45:24 [SPEAKER_02]: with you all on little things for the last two years and have never intersected with Anthony at all so thank you for that text There is at some point in the future.
45:24 --> 45:26 [SPEAKER_03]: You and he are going to be on a podcast together.
45:26 --> 45:26 [SPEAKER_03]: Cool.
45:26 --> 45:29 [SPEAKER_03]: So you joined
45:30 --> 45:53 [SPEAKER_03]: not only a sort of a publishing platform and a creator's circle, right, where we're all kind of buttressing each other and sort of helping each other through these weird, idiosyncratic things of getting audio out onto the internet, but you also joined a conversational community, a virtual water cooler.
45:54 --> 45:55 [SPEAKER_03]: of people.
45:56 --> 46:04 [SPEAKER_03]: And this isn't like, I'm not asking to go up the community or, or, you know, hash it out within you, particular whatever somebody on the discord or email.
46:05 --> 46:08 [SPEAKER_03]: But I'm, I'm curious is to like, whoa, you've entered this world.
46:08 --> 46:11 [SPEAKER_03]: Like, what was that orientation like for you suddenly?
46:11 --> 46:16 [SPEAKER_03]: There's people talking, you know, it's one thing to put out podcasts out into the world.
46:17 --> 46:21 [SPEAKER_03]: And you don't, you might get a trickle email every once in a while or some social media
46:22 --> 46:29 [SPEAKER_03]: But to then be part of an ongoing conversation in dialogue with a random group of internet strangers.
46:30 --> 46:31 [SPEAKER_03]: Like, what is that like?
46:31 --> 46:35 [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know what that is like because we built John and I were part of a discord community of another podcast.
46:36 --> 46:41 [SPEAKER_03]: So we already had that experience and then so we were kind of like Athena popping out as Zeus's head.
46:41 --> 46:43 [SPEAKER_03]: We're like, oh, we're already sort of pre-formed, we're good to go.
46:44 --> 47:12 [SPEAKER_01]: And then when we created our discord it was just like a whole bunch of people just came over and there was just like we just keep talking about the thing but you guys just sort of just came into this thing like that had to be weird it was a little bit weird for me all all that for me i don't love i'm not going to call discord social media i don't know discord feels like it is made up of very genuine interactions it has kind of like a reddit type of field to me that you know that there are real people they're not like hiding behind
47:13 --> 47:14 [SPEAKER_01]: false narratives of who they are.
47:14 --> 47:18 [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that your community or our community and just court is very genuine.
47:18 --> 47:21 [SPEAKER_01]: The never mind the music channel.
47:21 --> 47:23 [SPEAKER_01]: If I'm the I always get the no one could drama.
47:23 --> 47:26 [SPEAKER_01]: Never mind the music channel and just court is a great environment.
47:26 --> 47:31 [SPEAKER_01]: We share a lot of really cool information adding on to conversations in the podcast.
47:32 --> 47:33 [SPEAKER_01]: And that's been very nice.
47:34 --> 47:39 [SPEAKER_01]: I did find like when I do like going on floor, but it was a wider audience.
47:40 --> 48:03 [SPEAKER_01]: And I found for me, I did have to kind of just engage with that broader community because it did get, it was just intense, like the number of just the number of the volume alone and it turned off the notifications and I never run the music channel, there's like two notifications a day and it's like, cool, it's, you know, these are people that we're having conversations with and it's usually, uh, oh, hey, did you hear the song or oh, this is cool.
48:03 --> 48:04 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
48:04 --> 48:07 [SPEAKER_01]: two kids, two dogs, it's like, I love Taylor stuff too.
48:07 --> 48:09 [SPEAKER_01]: Like, you know, it's just like really hip-hop.
48:09 --> 48:16 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, when we're doing Presti showed, like deep intense shows, like severance and and harvest people.
48:16 --> 48:21 [SPEAKER_03]: It's like scratching people, scratching the other word, but it's affecting people, people are reacting to it.
48:21 --> 48:23 [SPEAKER_03]: And they are sharing the really intense up.
48:24 --> 48:28 [SPEAKER_03]: Our discord is show, this isn't a brag, it's just a reality.
48:29 --> 48:31 [SPEAKER_03]: It's a big landscape is what I should say.
48:31 --> 48:32 [SPEAKER_03]: It's a complex landscape.
48:34 --> 48:39 [SPEAKER_03]: canyons and valleys and mountains and all of this kind of stuff and there's people all over it and I'll scroll down the list.
48:39 --> 48:43 [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, and I see, you know, there's all of these conversations going on.
48:43 --> 48:48 [SPEAKER_03]: I don't engage with, um, I engage with maybe a tenth of what's going on.
48:48 --> 48:49 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
48:49 --> 48:50 [SPEAKER_03]: I can't handle the volume.
48:50 --> 48:50 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
48:50 --> 48:52 [SPEAKER_01]: And I have to protect my piece.
48:52 --> 48:53 [SPEAKER_01]: And that's what it was.
48:53 --> 48:55 [SPEAKER_01]: I found that it was like unhealthy for me.
48:55 --> 48:55 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
48:56 --> 49:04 [SPEAKER_01]: to really dig into like a parasocial relationship with folks on discord in those very large, very very active threads.
49:04 --> 49:04 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
49:04 --> 49:09 [SPEAKER_01]: It just wasn't didn't feel healthy to like, I would be worried about some of the things that they brought up.
49:09 --> 49:12 [SPEAKER_01]: I'd be like worried and concerned about them.
49:12 --> 49:14 [SPEAKER_02]: I can tell you're talking about specifically there.
49:14 --> 49:19 [SPEAKER_01]: I was talking about blurbists or like, yeah, in some of the other stuff too, but yeah, blurbists specifically.
49:19 --> 49:30 [SPEAKER_03]: For me, because I have the microphone and a host chair, I almost see it as a place of like, no, that's, this is where you, the community get to call or say it.
49:31 --> 49:32 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm talking enough.
49:32 --> 49:33 [SPEAKER_03]: That's a job, you know.
49:34 --> 49:39 [SPEAKER_03]: I'll share a thing or an observational post, and cool, hey, there's beautiful, you know, shots set up on the scene or whatever.
49:40 --> 49:43 [SPEAKER_03]: But I do try to, to tread lightly because I don't want to over crowd this.
49:43 --> 49:44 [SPEAKER_03]: I want
49:44 --> 49:47 [SPEAKER_03]: That's in space for the community to interact with the community.
49:47 --> 49:51 [SPEAKER_01]: That's exactly what I say to my students in our required online discussion forums.
49:51 --> 49:52 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just going to chime in.
49:53 --> 49:56 [SPEAKER_01]: I got a monitor to them and make sure it's like a safe space for everyone.
49:56 --> 50:00 [SPEAKER_01]: But when I comment it's like someone's mom's saying, Exactly.
50:00 --> 50:01 [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
50:01 --> 50:03 [SPEAKER_01]: And it just feels ruins the tone.
50:04 --> 50:04 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
50:04 --> 50:05 [SPEAKER_01]: But mainly I just...
50:06 --> 50:07 [SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be my work.
50:07 --> 50:08 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
50:08 --> 50:08 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
50:08 --> 50:09 [SPEAKER_02]: It's a lot of work.
50:09 --> 50:09 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
50:10 --> 50:12 [SPEAKER_02]: For me, so I'm not really a social media guy.
50:14 --> 50:15 [SPEAKER_02]: I am a lurker in forums.
50:16 --> 50:18 [SPEAKER_02]: And I have always been a lurker.
50:18 --> 50:22 [SPEAKER_02]: So whether it's red or sound by that, can we just send that?
50:23 --> 50:24 [SPEAKER_03]: I would add some flair.
50:24 --> 50:25 [SPEAKER_03]: We need some discord flair there.
50:25 --> 50:26 [SPEAKER_03]: There's a lurker.
50:26 --> 50:35 [SPEAKER_02]: You know who you are for every person who's posting for every person who's writing in, there are dozens of people that are just reading it or listening to the podcast.
50:35 --> 50:38 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, hundreds of people that are listening and not writing in, right?
50:38 --> 50:42 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I see our download numbers and the versus the volume of email feature.
50:42 --> 50:43 [SPEAKER_03]: It is, it's
50:43 --> 50:47 [SPEAKER_03]: And it's almost a fixed percentage, right?
50:47 --> 50:53 [SPEAKER_03]: Like as a, you know, your amount of email and feedback will grow as the podcast download.
50:53 --> 50:54 [SPEAKER_03]: So we can tell when we're hitting a big show.
50:55 --> 50:57 [SPEAKER_03]: When, and then you get all kinds of random stuff to it.
50:57 --> 50:59 [SPEAKER_03]: Ooh, it gets a little weird.
50:59 --> 51:00 [SPEAKER_02]: So a little weird.
51:00 --> 51:00 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
51:00 --> 51:03 [SPEAKER_02]: How many years into the lower housing?
51:03 --> 51:04 [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not changing the subject.
51:04 --> 51:10 [SPEAKER_02]: How many years into the lower housing experiment were you to, at the time, and then eventually three, when we joined?
51:10 --> 51:12 [SPEAKER_02]: Were you two years deep at that point?
51:12 --> 51:13 [SPEAKER_02]: three, three.
51:13 --> 51:13 [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
51:13 --> 51:19 [SPEAKER_02]: So I had listened to you all since the beginning and only sent one email.
51:19 --> 51:24 [SPEAKER_02]: And I sent an email about like Melcore's discord and music or whatever.
51:24 --> 51:25 [SPEAKER_02]: And I remember I remember.
51:25 --> 51:26 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
51:26 --> 51:30 [SPEAKER_02]: And that is an example kind of a how I tend to interact with these communities.
51:30 --> 51:33 [SPEAKER_02]: So for me, the discord thing is cool.
51:34 --> 51:35 [SPEAKER_02]: Like I love looking at our channel.
51:35 --> 51:35 [SPEAKER_02]: I will
51:36 --> 51:46 [SPEAKER_02]: I will look through and lurk a bit in some of the other channels, but the truth is I'm often watching the episodes like a couple of days later than everybody else, so it's hard for me to buy the time I get in.
51:46 --> 51:47 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't want to get spoiled.
51:47 --> 51:51 [SPEAKER_02]: So I won't go on like a house with a dragon thread until I've watched the whole episode.
51:51 --> 51:55 [SPEAKER_02]: And then by then the conversation is like, we've gone practically, right?
51:55 --> 51:55 [SPEAKER_02]: But...
51:56 --> 52:02 [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's interesting like we tend to get more feedback on discord and we tend to get more questions for email.
52:03 --> 52:06 [SPEAKER_02]: So like people on email will more be like a stand alone.
52:07 --> 52:08 [SPEAKER_02]: Here's something I just went to the show.
52:08 --> 52:09 [SPEAKER_02]: What do you think about this?
52:09 --> 52:14 [SPEAKER_02]: Whereas feedback folks are often not always but often reacting to what they're hearing.
52:14 --> 52:20 [SPEAKER_02]: You know, not always again like John brought up earth wind and fire a couple of weeks ago in that episode by the way.
52:20 --> 52:21 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was a lot of fun.
52:22 --> 52:22 [SPEAKER_02]: Have you watched it yet?
52:23 --> 52:23 [SPEAKER_02]: Me, no.
52:23 --> 52:25 [SPEAKER_01]: No, I listened to your episode.
52:25 --> 52:26 [SPEAKER_01]: You guys have to see it.
52:26 --> 52:26 [SPEAKER_02]: It's great.
52:27 --> 52:33 [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, if you're a kind of jealous of how naturally you and John had banter.
52:33 --> 52:37 [SPEAKER_01]: I was kind of hoping that it would be like a really bad
52:38 --> 52:43 [SPEAKER_01]: But then I started thinking like, oh, am I going to get like you haven't opened podcasting Mary, do you not have a naga mish?
52:43 --> 52:47 [SPEAKER_02]: Man, I feel like we are, but Brooklyn's just close enough.
52:47 --> 52:50 [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe we could do this a couple times in person a couple times.
52:50 --> 52:57 [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, your voice is like just vibing together in a really nice, like, you know, it was fun having a mongon on it.
52:57 --> 52:59 [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, it's funny too.
52:59 --> 53:01 [SPEAKER_02]: Look at the community is cool for me.
53:01 --> 53:01 [SPEAKER_02]: It's it's just.
53:02 --> 53:17 [SPEAKER_02]: I feel bad, actually, because I do try to keep up with it in comment and stuff, but so many of the comments that I would make, I end up saying, like, cool, we'll talk about it on the pod, right, like, because I don't want to, like, if someone's bringing up a thing that's really fascinating.
53:17 --> 53:20 [SPEAKER_02]: We probably should talk about it on our next mail bag, right?
53:20 --> 53:24 [SPEAKER_02]: So I feel like when things really start cooking, then I have to disengage.
53:24 --> 53:27 [SPEAKER_02]: And I chime in more than you do in a coal, but I even...
53:27 --> 53:28 [SPEAKER_02]: It's not just the...
53:28 --> 53:30 [SPEAKER_02]: Try not to ruin the conversation.
53:30 --> 53:35 [SPEAKER_02]: It's like, if people want our opinions, if we've got strong opinions, maybe we just got a savior for the mic, right?
53:35 --> 53:35 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
53:36 --> 53:41 [SPEAKER_03]: We get it's funny, because the discord is the place where it's like, oh, I actually get to interact with the...
53:42 --> 53:49 [SPEAKER_03]: people I'm listening to like they're actually present and so there's it's weird thing but then we're not trying to step on their space for them to talk among themselves.
53:49 --> 53:55 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah it's a really interesting thing that like takes us off the podcasting pedestal and so it's amongst the people.
53:55 --> 54:07 [SPEAKER_03]: Well I think that's a principle that's in operation whether implicitly or explicitly within our community we don't feel Alicia John and I I'm going to speak for us.
54:08 --> 54:11 [SPEAKER_03]: We don't feel that we have power over our community.
54:11 --> 54:15 [SPEAKER_03]: We're not a rogan or a swisher or whoever.
54:15 --> 54:18 [SPEAKER_03]: We're not like authoritatively saying things.
54:19 --> 54:21 [SPEAKER_03]: We are with our community.
54:21 --> 54:33 [SPEAKER_03]: And we're just the personalities within this community that have the wear with all in the desire to sit behind a microphone for two hours while our spouses are like, what are you doing?
54:35 --> 54:49 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, I'm recording, you know, we're the ones that are into this format for whatever reason, but there are some people on our discord who's points of view and discord and email.
54:50 --> 54:54 [SPEAKER_03]: Remember during the pet, we had a woman who's a nurse wrote in and giving us her perspective.
54:55 --> 55:05 [SPEAKER_03]: There are people, real people in that choose to congregate in this community that have just incredible insights that like you said Mark before, I will never have had that insight.
55:05 --> 55:09 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we've had those experiences too that sometimes people chime in, it's like,
55:10 --> 55:15 [SPEAKER_02]: It's not, or it's just, what's the point of being alive if you know everything already, you know, I'm supposed to keep learning.
55:30 --> 55:32 [SPEAKER_03]: I think we're coming up on some time here.
55:32 --> 55:34 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm just a little curious.
55:34 --> 55:45 [SPEAKER_03]: I want to give you guys some space to cook on what's happening in season three like how is the format changing or what are some things that you want to drop to get folks excited about.
55:45 --> 55:46 [SPEAKER_03]: Welcome back.
55:46 --> 55:47 [SPEAKER_01]: Has the spread sheets.
55:48 --> 55:59 [SPEAKER_02]: So we have already planned out most of I've already having second thoughts and I'm gonna change a few things But we've already planned out at least the rough and you're feeling you're learning the the rattle, right?
55:59 --> 56:02 [SPEAKER_03]: You know, there's like it needs to be tight, but it also has to have some looseness to it.
56:02 --> 56:02 [SPEAKER_03]: So
56:03 --> 56:03 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
56:03 --> 56:10 [SPEAKER_02]: Season two, what happened was, because I think, in terms of our recording schedule, it's probably going to be similar.
56:10 --> 56:11 [SPEAKER_02]: Well, well, like, oh, it's spring break.
56:12 --> 56:12 [SPEAKER_02]: Let's record twice.
56:13 --> 56:14 [SPEAKER_02]: And then that, that'll get us through May.
56:14 --> 56:17 [SPEAKER_02]: And then we won't record again for the next month and a half.
56:17 --> 56:20 [SPEAKER_02]: Not counting the exception being sidetracks like this and stuff.
56:20 --> 56:23 [SPEAKER_02]: We, we've often done like immediately before they come out.
56:23 --> 56:27 [SPEAKER_02]: But what happened in season two was the first half was
56:31 --> 56:36 [SPEAKER_02]: But the episode we were going to do like a lanus mora set or whatever, which is what just came out.
56:36 --> 56:39 [SPEAKER_02]: That one might have moved around might have been subbed out for a different song.
56:39 --> 56:43 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think specifically, but there's more change in the second half.
56:43 --> 56:45 [SPEAKER_02]: So I expect the second half is going to change.
56:45 --> 56:48 [SPEAKER_02]: But the first couple months are pretty planned out.
56:49 --> 56:49 [SPEAKER_02]: I am.
56:50 --> 57:05 [SPEAKER_02]: recording new ad music that I'm almost done with Nicole do you want to just listen when everybody listens or do you want me to because it's done before the seasons I'm doing it now because it's a last time that you played it for me.
57:05 --> 57:08 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think people want to sidetrack of that again.
57:09 --> 57:11 [SPEAKER_01]: I think the people do want that.
57:11 --> 57:13 [SPEAKER_01]: I mean David you're the people what do you think?
57:14 --> 57:15 [SPEAKER_03]: I think it would be a fun sidetrack.
57:15 --> 57:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
57:16 --> 57:17 [SPEAKER_02]: Let me think about it.
57:17 --> 57:18 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's like little on the inside tracks.
57:19 --> 57:24 [SPEAKER_03]: It's the, it's the, it's the, what do people want Nicole, they want authenticity.
57:24 --> 57:25 [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
57:25 --> 57:25 [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
57:25 --> 57:26 [SPEAKER_03]: And their parasocial relationships.
57:26 --> 57:30 [SPEAKER_01]: They want to feel like they're part of part of our relationship.
57:30 --> 57:30 [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
57:30 --> 57:32 [SPEAKER_02]: So what else is changing?
57:32 --> 57:34 [SPEAKER_02]: We are, um, we are doing.
57:35 --> 57:42 [SPEAKER_02]: We are going to do some multi-guessed episodes that we do games and things and- Correct, okay.
57:42 --> 57:46 [SPEAKER_02]: And we're actually going to do at the end of this season.
57:46 --> 57:49 [SPEAKER_02]: We're going to do the two of us a quiz episode.
57:49 --> 57:52 [SPEAKER_02]: But we might work some of that stuff in with guests as well.
57:52 --> 57:55 [SPEAKER_02]: Just so we commented on this in our Linus episode.
57:55 --> 57:59 [SPEAKER_02]: maybe we've got too many list episodes in season two.
57:59 --> 58:00 [SPEAKER_02]: I think over.
58:01 --> 58:03 [SPEAKER_03]: I can hear it, Nicole, I heard it.
58:03 --> 58:06 [SPEAKER_01]: I heard it every time because I kept feeling like the rules were changing.
58:06 --> 58:12 [SPEAKER_01]: Like we'd prep and we'd get there and mark over is so prepared and I'm just left.
58:12 --> 58:13 [SPEAKER_03]: But you're quick-witted.
58:13 --> 58:14 [SPEAKER_01]: The left and the dust?
58:14 --> 58:15 [SPEAKER_02]: You can't tell me.
58:15 --> 58:17 [SPEAKER_02]: Did you listen to the episode where you did the happy birthday thing?
58:17 --> 58:18 [SPEAKER_02]: Did you listen to that?
58:18 --> 58:19 [SPEAKER_01]: No, I know.
58:19 --> 58:21 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm getting a lot of attention.
58:21 --> 58:23 [SPEAKER_01]: That is a violation of the rules.
58:23 --> 58:24 [SPEAKER_01]: And that's fine.
58:24 --> 58:27 [SPEAKER_01]: But I think I more than made up for it with my other examples.
58:27 --> 58:28 [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, you're gonna have to listen to it.
58:28 --> 58:30 [SPEAKER_01]: It's also quite, quite strong.
58:31 --> 58:33 [SPEAKER_01]: So can we just stop with the happy birthday?
58:33 --> 58:39 [SPEAKER_01]: There's so much, but this is why I'm not on discord because people were like Nicole was out of bounds on that.
58:39 --> 58:46 [SPEAKER_01]: That was like, and I respect your point of view, but man, oh man, the happy birthday song is awful.
58:46 --> 58:50 [SPEAKER_02]: less I'm dead, I don't think anybody's disagreeing with you on that.
58:50 --> 58:53 [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, sure feels like they are.
58:54 --> 58:55 [SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of more of the same though.
58:55 --> 59:04 [SPEAKER_02]: I think the difference is in terms of the main content, the difference is between season one and two are going to be stronger than the differences between season two and three because I feel like
59:05 --> 59:12 [SPEAKER_02]: We're pretty happy with just the actual episode content, maybe list aside.
59:12 --> 59:12 [SPEAKER_03]: I like the format.
59:12 --> 59:19 [SPEAKER_03]: I like the, yeah, whatever you did in season two to kind of loosen it up and flow.
59:19 --> 59:22 [SPEAKER_03]: And it is, I do my wife likes to listen.
59:22 --> 59:28 [SPEAKER_03]: We like to listen on car rides to you guys together, like that's like of the few podcasts that she will listen with me.
59:29 --> 59:31 [SPEAKER_03]: Never mind the music is one because she's also music nurse.
59:31 --> 59:41 [SPEAKER_03]: She's a music nerd as well and her father was a psychiatrist so it fits and then, but it's like it's, yeah, it's like we're writing in the car with Mark and Nicole.
59:41 --> 59:41 [SPEAKER_03]: It's kind of fun.
59:41 --> 59:44 [SPEAKER_03]: So I like the way that you've changed the format in that regard.
59:44 --> 59:47 [SPEAKER_01]: I think we're learning to like trust ourselves more.
59:47 --> 59:51 [SPEAKER_01]: I think season one we're very like we're both very organized, believe it or not.
59:52 --> 59:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Like we like things buttoned up.
59:53 --> 59:56 [SPEAKER_01]: We like everything sorted out and comforts us.
59:58 --> 01:00:23 [SPEAKER_01]: and when things aren't planned, I think we both get a little disregulated but I think we're learning that not having a strong plan can be the plan and just know and trust that we'll get it done like maybe there's room for sidetracks that are more reactionary that we a documentary pops up and we don't need to outsource Sean to take it because I don't have bandwidth to do it
01:00:27 --> 01:00:37 [SPEAKER_01]: and trust that when the two of us get together, it's going to create good to great content no matter what, because we're... You know the, the thing is, poet philosopher Rumi.
01:00:37 --> 01:00:40 [SPEAKER_01]: I actually, that's bonkers, because just the other night...
01:00:41 --> 01:00:42 [SPEAKER_03]: It's hard to collect if some conscious.
01:00:43 --> 01:00:48 [SPEAKER_01]: I was out with girlfriends and we were like, we met a baby, it's weird, we met a baby named Rumi.
01:00:49 --> 01:00:50 [SPEAKER_01]: I know, it's weird.
01:00:50 --> 01:00:51 [SPEAKER_01]: We were out in Davis Square.
01:00:51 --> 01:00:52 [SPEAKER_00]: There's a dream guy.
01:00:53 --> 01:00:53 [SPEAKER_01]: No.
01:00:53 --> 01:01:03 [SPEAKER_01]: We were out in Davis Square dinner outside place and there was this guy walking a baby around and the baby was like very young so we were like talking to the guy about this baby, whatever.
01:01:03 --> 01:01:05 [SPEAKER_01]: And he goes, oh, his name's Rumi, like the poet.
01:01:06 --> 01:01:10 [SPEAKER_01]: And then we like spent an hour reading Rumi poetry to each other and me and my friends.
01:01:10 --> 01:01:11 [SPEAKER_03]: There you go.
01:01:11 --> 01:01:21 [SPEAKER_03]: Well, I'm going to start off with a new drop of single line of internet source stuff thing, but as as you start to walk on the way the way appears, I love that.
01:01:21 --> 01:01:21 [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
01:01:21 --> 01:01:30 [SPEAKER_03]: So like when we were just on family vacation, my wife wants to like structure and organize things and I'm like, let's just show up in the city and like figure out what happens and like stuff happened.
01:01:30 --> 01:01:35 [SPEAKER_03]: Like we so we found the balance in our family relationship where we can do both.
01:01:35 --> 01:01:36 [SPEAKER_03]: And I feel like you guys are getting there too.
01:01:36 --> 01:01:39 [SPEAKER_03]: Like you have a plan and structure, but then you can drop in an earth
01:01:40 --> 01:01:42 [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, ah, spontaneity, oh, that's great.
01:01:42 --> 01:01:44 [SPEAKER_03]: You can react to real-time events.
01:01:44 --> 01:01:45 [SPEAKER_03]: That's great.
01:01:45 --> 01:01:54 [SPEAKER_03]: Like, I love the fact that you can do both and to be able to accommodate, oh, there was a cool thing that happened that we should talk about that's concurrent.
01:01:55 --> 01:01:58 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that there's so much opportunity there.
01:01:58 --> 01:02:02 [SPEAKER_01]: And we often kick ourselves when we don't take those opportunities.
01:02:02 --> 01:02:05 [SPEAKER_01]: And I think we're now we're at a place that we can trust ourselves.
01:02:05 --> 01:02:08 [SPEAKER_01]: Really, because you've done years and over a hundred podcasts.
01:02:08 --> 01:02:11 [SPEAKER_03]: You've got that whatever a thousand hours bullshit, right?
01:02:11 --> 01:02:16 [SPEAKER_03]: You're like, you hit a level of confidence and comfort in process and production.
01:02:17 --> 01:02:26 [SPEAKER_03]: It was like, I remember when when my after our daughter turned to my wife and I were like, oh, like we can we can sleep, everything's fine.
01:02:26 --> 01:02:27 [SPEAKER_03]: We don't have to freak out about it.
01:02:27 --> 01:02:31 [SPEAKER_03]: Like, there's just a at a point and you're just like, oh, okay, everything's going to be fine.
01:02:32 --> 01:02:32 [SPEAKER_03]: We're good.
01:02:32 --> 01:02:33 [SPEAKER_03]: Like we got through the heart.
01:02:33 --> 01:02:35 [SPEAKER_01]: Parenting tricky because as soon as you figure it out, it's just changing.
01:02:35 --> 01:02:37 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the case again, right podcast.
01:02:37 --> 01:02:38 [SPEAKER_03]: Hopefully it's easier.
01:02:38 --> 01:02:38 [SPEAKER_03]: Sorry, Mark.
01:02:38 --> 01:02:39 [SPEAKER_03]: You have probably some more to say.
01:02:40 --> 01:02:50 [SPEAKER_02]: our community can definitely help in that regard too, because like we said before, John posting about that earthman in fire dock is the reason that we did that.
01:02:50 --> 01:02:54 [SPEAKER_02]: But I try, I can't keep track of what's happening.
01:02:54 --> 01:02:59 [SPEAKER_02]: And like, I would love to know when a dock is about to come out.
01:03:00 --> 01:03:05 [SPEAKER_02]: If anybody knows, like, hey, next month this earthman and fire dock is coming out for example.
01:03:06 --> 01:03:10 [SPEAKER_02]: That's a great time for us to schedule in, not even a bonus episode, but just go, you know what?
01:03:10 --> 01:03:13 [SPEAKER_02]: Let's do a regular sidetrack episode about that.
01:03:13 --> 01:03:20 [SPEAKER_02]: So if people, anybody has like a resource that tells us everything or have you, do not have the show tracker?
01:03:20 --> 01:03:22 [SPEAKER_02]: It does the show tracker have that kind of stuff, too?
01:03:23 --> 01:03:23 [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
01:03:23 --> 01:03:25 [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it's it's community sourced.
01:03:25 --> 01:03:29 [SPEAKER_03]: It's open and we it was subscriber only, but then we opened it.
01:03:29 --> 01:03:31 [SPEAKER_03]: Sub zero is the keeper of it.
01:03:32 --> 01:03:35 [SPEAKER_03]: And so it's a matter of people filtering stuff to him.
01:03:35 --> 01:03:41 [SPEAKER_02]: If anybody's uploading music docs adding music docs to the show tracker, that would be super helpful.
01:03:41 --> 01:03:50 [SPEAKER_03]: We can create a new it's easy enough in the notion thing to create a new thing that's a documentary, you know, music documentary, you can tag it and filter and search for that kind of stuff.
01:03:50 --> 01:04:09 [SPEAKER_03]: I don't, I'm not tracking those things like I'm tracking for like blurb us here, you know, severance house the dragon, but like we could add in that that would be a totally fine thing to do if people listening to this on the nevermind the music channel on the discord have intel about stuff like that.
01:04:09 --> 01:04:09 [SPEAKER_03]: Totally.
01:04:10 --> 01:04:15 [SPEAKER_03]: They could post it and they can tag sub zero and then it can get added to the list.
01:04:16 --> 01:04:16 [SPEAKER_03]: There he goes.
01:04:18 --> 01:04:18 [SPEAKER_01]: There's a way.
01:04:20 --> 01:04:22 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to use my position and speak for the community.
01:04:22 --> 01:04:27 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm just very grateful that you guys decided to join in our tribe.
01:04:27 --> 01:04:31 [SPEAKER_03]: And I've had Mark, I listen to music now in a wholly different way.
01:04:31 --> 01:04:33 [SPEAKER_03]: I don't understand half the shit that you'd darker about.
01:04:34 --> 01:04:37 [SPEAKER_03]: But I am like, like the house of the dragon thing, either.
01:04:37 --> 01:04:39 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like the cello, the violins, the things.
01:04:40 --> 01:04:52 [SPEAKER_03]: And I would have never triggered on any of that, wherever my miss attributions are to like what this how it works and does things, if I hadn't had your thing.
01:04:52 --> 01:05:04 [SPEAKER_03]: And Nicole, like I just love hanging out with you and talking about psychobabble bullshit and being so full and had great time on
01:05:07 --> 01:05:13 [SPEAKER_03]: And I just, um, so, you know, on behalf of our community, we're just so glad that you guys are here.
01:05:13 --> 01:05:16 [SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to get weepy if I keep talking.
01:05:16 --> 01:05:16 [SPEAKER_03]: So,
01:05:17 --> 01:05:38 [SPEAKER_02]: We don't like to cry here so no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
