[00:00:00] Hey everybody, David from The Lorhounds here. John, Alicia and I are super excited to share with you

[00:00:06] the latest podcast to join the Lorhounds Network, Nevermind the Music. Mark and Nicole are two friends.

[00:00:14] They're also academics. Mark teaches music and Nicole teaches psychology and they put together this great podcast

[00:00:22] where they dig into various pop songs.

[00:00:25] The moment we heard their samples, we knew that this was exactly the kind of material that the Lorhounds community loves.

[00:00:34] John, Alicia and I have recorded an interview with Mark and Nicole and you can find that now on the main Lorhounds feed.

[00:00:44] Starting today, you can find the Nevermind the Music podcast by going to our website at thelorhounds.com

[00:00:50] or by searching for it in your podcast player.

[00:00:53] There's also links in the show notes for this episode. If you're on our discord,

[00:00:58] we've also set up a channel just for them over on our server, so I invite you to join the conversation there.

[00:01:06] Otherwise, take a listen to this five-minute intro that Mark and Nicole put together

[00:01:10] so you can get a sense of what their podcast is about. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

[00:01:17] It's a really great podcast and we're super excited to have them as part of our extended community.

[00:01:23] Could the tone of this intro be us trying to decide what the tone of the intro is?

[00:01:27] It's key that people know that we're like academics but that we're doing this irreverently.

[00:01:31] That's what I want them to know.

[00:01:33] Wait, are you recording now?

[00:01:35] Yeah.

[00:01:35] Are we recording right now or recording?

[00:01:37] We're recording the pre-conversation.

[00:01:39] Oh my gosh.

[00:01:44] Hi, I'm Nicole.

[00:01:45] And I'm Mark and this is Nevermind the Music.

[00:01:48] Hey Mark, do you ever notice that when you're listening to music,

[00:01:50] one part of the song just gets really stuck in your head and you like lumenate on it

[00:01:55] and you can't get it out of your head?

[00:01:56] Absolutely, and I've got some musical explanations for that, but I bet you have some

[00:02:01] psychological explanations for it.

[00:02:03] I totally do.

[00:02:04] Anybody remember in high school or middle school or even college,

[00:02:08] you had that professor that would every now and then just like waste a lot of time talking about random stuff.

[00:02:14] Yeah, but it's us.

[00:02:15] Half the time you're like, uh, we have a test tomorrow, but most of the time you're like, yeah.

[00:02:20] Yeah, like...

[00:02:21] He's wasting time.

[00:02:23] That's this podcast.

[00:02:24] I think it is, yeah.

[00:02:25] I do that in my classes.

[00:02:26] Like...

[00:02:27] I'm notorious for that, that I have people like aware off track right now and like, okay.

[00:02:32] But you say, oh gosh, nerd.

[00:02:33] You say, that's right, that student.

[00:02:36] But you say notorious, like it's bad.

[00:02:38] That's where the meaningful learning happens.

[00:02:41] I think so.

[00:02:41] Someone raised their hand and they start talking about hardcore punk when I was teaching a lecture on Beethoven

[00:02:45] and we go on this 20 minute sidetrack that I feel like people are going to remember that better

[00:02:51] than if we just stuck to the plan.

[00:02:53] I think so.

[00:02:53] I mean, maybe that's ADHD, but I'm not sure.

[00:02:56] And I think that...

[00:02:57] You're not a psychologist or anything.

[00:03:00] A psychologist.

[00:03:00] Oh wait a minute.

[00:03:01] We are two friends, one a psychology professor, the other a music professor, talking about a song over a beer.

[00:03:09] Maybe we drank too much coffee.

[00:03:10] When we first started, I told you when I...

[00:03:12] The first thing I do when I listen to a new song is I read the lyrics and you told me I was listening to music wrong.

[00:03:17] Oh no, I did not tell you that.

[00:03:19] Are you kidding?

[00:03:19] You said you're like listening to it wrong and I was like, how could it be wrong?

[00:03:24] If I said that, I have edited it out of the podcast in shame because I did not mean to say that.

[00:03:30] Yeah, like what you're doing it wrong.

[00:03:31] I was like, well, what's the right way?

[00:03:33] Mark, what are some of like the different songs that we've talked about so far in this pod?

[00:03:37] Well, there's that time that we started talking about The Signed by Ace of Bass and I wanted to talk about how they do some cool key changes from major to minor

[00:03:46] and then you started talking about Jung's collective unconscious.

[00:03:50] How did we get there?

[00:03:52] It made sense at the time.

[00:03:54] I don't honestly mark a lot...

[00:03:55] So I've written down the topics of the episodes.

[00:03:56] Yeah, I don't even remember half the things that we talked about on here.

[00:03:59] So what about the episode where we talk about how the way a Dua Lipa song's melody is built is analogous to the various personality components of a person?

[00:04:07] That was really cool.

[00:04:08] We talked about how you take a foundation and keep adding and adding and adding on to it and that myriad of sound creates this really complex texture, like the myriad of our personalities created with our life experiences.

[00:04:21] What I love about this podcast is I think I know why a piece of music works the way it works and I bring us onto the table and I'm like, let me show you a cool chord or let me show you a cool melodic trick

[00:04:31] and you tell me actually why.

[00:04:34] There's like a brain thing going on.

[00:04:36] We're talking about a catchy melody and you're like, let's talk about intrusive thoughts for a second.

[00:04:42] That conversation got weird though, that intrusive thought conversation.

[00:04:45] And then sometimes we talk about things so much that we go on rants and we had to create whole sidetrack episodes.

[00:04:51] We listened to Party in the USA and talked about coming of age and stereotypes and how you fit in certain places but not other places.

[00:04:59] Do you remember the sidetrack?

[00:05:00] What was the sidetrack on that?

[00:05:02] How much you hate Los Angeles and love Boston?

[00:05:04] Well I just think that people in Boston are kind but not nice.

[00:05:08] Don't spoil it, don't spoil it, save it.

[00:05:10] I'm just saying, there are differences. I'm a Boston girl and you're an LA guy and that's...

[00:05:15] LA guy?

[00:05:16] My San Diego family and friends are spinning in their... wait they're fine, they're in San Diego.

[00:05:24] They're not mad.

[00:05:24] They're not listening, they're too busy.

[00:05:26] No, they're too busy just being nice to everybody.

[00:05:29] I like the sidetrack about how I had a really lousy high school music teacher, even though I'm the professional musician

[00:05:36] and you had a really awesome high school music teacher.

[00:05:39] I had the best high school music teacher.

[00:05:41] That's right, he'll get a whole episode later.

[00:05:53] Never mind the music is part of the Lorhounds Network.

[00:05:56] We launch on Tuesday, September 10th with three full episodes featuring Paramore, Ace of Bass and Bone Thugs in Harmony.

[00:06:05] Be sure to subscribe now so you don't miss any episodes when they drop.

[00:06:08] Tell us what you think by sending an email at nevermusicpod at gmail.com.

[00:06:13] We're also on social media at Never Music Pod.

[00:06:16] So the theme music stopped about 15 seconds ago so we'll see you then.

[00:06:21] Thanks for listening.
