Back in August 2021, Steve and Anthony from Properly Howard Movie Reviews (an affiliate of The Lorehounds) invited David, John and Elysia on to discuss the Denis Villeneuve movie, Dune Part 1.
Dune Part 2 has been released in the theaters and The Lorehounds are planning to do a Oneshot review. Ahead of that we thought we would re-release this podcast for Part 1 to help set the stage for Part 2.

[00:00:00] Hey everybody, David from The Lorehounds here.
[00:00:02] A quick note about this podcast.
[00:00:05] This is a re-release from the properly Howard movie review
[00:00:10] feed, which is one of our affiliates.
[00:00:13] Back in August 2021, Steve and Anthony
[00:00:17] invited myself, John, and Alicia over
[00:00:20] to talk about the Denis Villeneuve
[00:00:23] version of the Dune movie, which is now Dune part 1. The legends are true. Overbelling power. The sauce of destiny. Yes! The most legendary sauce has arrived as McDonald's transforms into the anime world of Wic Donalds. The greatest flavors unite in all new savory chili McDonald's sauce to make your 10 piece Wic nuggets fries and Sprite ultra powerful.
[00:01:40] Unlock manga comics with every meal
[00:01:42] and sit down for a new anime short every week only
[00:01:44] at Wic Donalds.
[00:01:46] Ba-da-ba-ba-ba.
[00:01:47] Go! Dust and John and David from the Lorehounds are with us. And if you want to skip all the nonsense, we actually start talking about the film at about minute 12. You know, you're going to miss us talking about G.I. Joe a bit, but choose your own adventure. We're able to collect any data to see who just tunes in
[00:03:02] for the nonsense and actually podcast? I did. I did want clarification on the last one. What was it? It was like half, half done or better luck next time.
[00:04:21] Oh yeah. You don't know he may be lost sick or scared. You mean he might be dangerous. That's right If we don't know we leave him alone and we don't get bit now I know and no one is half the battle After battle, I mean they also had I grew up on Shira and they had at the end of every episode It was that little sprite Lee figure that would teach you lessons from the episode
[00:05:41] That wasn't snarf snarf. That's correct
[00:05:44] And he man had what had those as well and he would get a little his version of the orco probably, oh, maybe six or seven times. I've seen the 84 movie more times than I can count. And I've watched the 21 movie maybe four times now, I think. Okay. All right. And Alicia, if I understand correctly, you will be launching a Dune book podcast shortly, right?
[00:07:03] Yes. Starting in August, basically. Yeah.
[00:08:04] All right. I don't know why that's a tough one for me. All right. Let's go ahead and jump into Dune here. So Steve, this is a question for you. I will give you all of the dime bags
[00:08:10] of spice that you could ever want. But for every dime bag, you get a face boil.
[00:08:17] This is just an anti-meth campaign, right?
[00:08:21] I don't know, man little bit too on the nose. Yeah, what if he just like burst into song in the middle of the film that would have been the only thing that could have possibly made a good film better. Watching that there were plenty of moments where I actually thought it would like it behaves like it's a musical porno in many ways, but it delivers none of the music or
[00:09:44] the pornography.
[00:09:45] It's like so like the way that it's the virgin eyes, I guess. All right. We need to add that to our old man movies list, John. That is a classic that you must watch someday. I make John watch movies as part of our Patreon exclusive podcast. Nice. Yeah, I was thinking about it being a good pick for it.
[00:11:03] So David, let's stay with you. 84 Dune before this week. Love it. Yeah, I was watching it on double speed, which is pretty fun to watch the Baron Parkkonen bouncing around in his little bubble suit throughout the set. Yeah, I did. And I was trying to catch up on the Yodorowsky
[00:12:25] documentary before we started, but feels deserved of this story. The bigness of it, the enormity, the, you cannot come. I'm a mere mortal tiny little human being, and I cannot comprehend the size of a guild highliner. And I felt that in this movie. What are the sort of the pyramid palace?
[00:13:43] What's that place called?
[00:13:44] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:13:45] On the dune planet.
[00:13:46] I think it's the advantage of because you can get that inner monologue. But this was a of the Wheel of Time plays with it a little bit. Just that is one of my favorite things in any kind of fantasy. All right. Let's maybe let's jump in there because I feel like there were so many stories when I was growing up that was sort of playing with some kind of messianic figure.
[00:16:24] And it was over and over and over again. was messing with messianic typology in some way. I don't know, I just kind of feel like it's a little bit risky to try to make that work with modern film. David, you were gonna say? No, let Alicia go, because both her and I are biting our thumbs right now because we have so much to say. We talked about saving things for the end
[00:17:42] that might be spoilers from future books,
[00:17:44] and maybe this is, but let's just say that
[00:17:46] this series as a whole especially, and I'll let you finish for sure. I feel like in this film, I was totally invested. And I wasn't like rolling my eyes thinking, Oh, geez, they're gonna do this again. So like, I'm hooked. Like I kind of I'm kind of just fascinated to see what they do with the trope. But I'm sorry, go ahead, Alicia. No, I was just gonna ask David how he was going to dance around that topic.
[00:19:03] Yeah, I think I have to go back to one of the things that they did wrong in this film.
[00:20:05] all of the Bene Gesserit secrets by his mother.
[00:20:10] And so when he gets and, but see then there's an and there is that there's the Missionaria Protectiva,
[00:20:13] which the Bene Gesserit went out into the universe
[00:20:17] and seeded mythology throughout the universe, such that
[00:20:21] if one of their people or their plans ever,
[00:20:26] somebody needed an out or an escape, I've watched the 84 version just the other day, you know, in preparation for this. And I had, I realized I'd sort of like romanticized, like imagining like scenes that I was, were cut from the 21 version versus the book. I had sort of thought like, Oh, well they're in the 84 version. I'm like, no, they're not. You know, what is actually the most complete version is the sci-fi version from 2000.
[00:21:41] Oh, the mini series.
[00:21:42] Yeah.
[00:21:43] I mean, it's cheesy production effects, but it The sound, like I just felt like, and it could be like, I was cooped up with COVID for, you know, a good two years or something. So I was sort of ready to get back in the theater, but just the, just the beauty of this film, it just looks amazing.
[00:23:02] Like I said, the sound, the scale of it, it was, I'm so glad
[00:23:06] it was on the big screen.
[00:23:07] Absolutely. nuance of the original work. Yeah, that's a hard thing to do. Villainy had to make a movie that you could see without reading the books and understanding. And we talked to John and I talked about that a lot with our rings of power coverage is where do you, what choices do you have to make to hit
[00:24:20] your central themes and, but still won't be able to watch something that
[00:24:24] is watchable.
[00:25:22] fading back into the stars as she continues to talk.
[00:25:24] And then we get a space hemorrhoid.
[00:25:30] So I don't know. I that that's sort of my answer, John.
[00:25:32] What do you what do you think about that?
[00:25:34] Well, I think it's time we all just admit that a lot of us would pay money
[00:25:38] to go see premieres of TV shows in the theaters.
[00:25:41] And if movie theaters want to stay open, maybe they should just let people
[00:25:45] watch HBO on Sunday night in a theater.
[00:25:48] That'd be interesting. not to see it in the theater with people on the big screen. But anyway, I'll get off this. No, I mean, that's fair. I mean, I watched it on a TV. I didn't see it in the theater. So I don't know. I don't know what this looked like in IMAX. All right. Let me ask everyone if there's one tweak that you could make. David, you've already touched on something that you didn't think that they didn't want.
[00:27:03] But if there was...
[00:27:04] Yeah, yeah, I don't know if you've noticed, we as a people, we're dumber lately.
[00:28:20] Give it another 8,000 years.
[00:28:24] I'm actually impressed that we're able to speak it all.
[00:28:27] Alicia, what about you? the amount that they that they overlay their whispered thoughts like i feel like everything is either like either people are screaming or whispering. I found that some of the funniest lines to some of the funny mother but with these i got rather i guess by better instincts i rather like this to go whatever was i just love.
[00:30:41] This is diet doom, right? And new new doom.
[00:30:44] Yeah.
[00:30:44] And so and I have mountain doom and I liked to do it all day.
[00:30:49] We and so I like this.
[00:30:51] So and but I do think you know, it's kind of hard to know now
[00:30:55] that I think I'm a little bit cloudified.
[00:30:57] Like I listen to what you're talking about and doing a little
[00:30:59] bit of research for this podcast.
[00:31:01] There are elements that I think I would have wanted to see a
[00:31:05] little bit more like maybe a little bit more of the other worlds kind of behind it. Like, cause while the scale was big, the universe didn't feel as big as I think maybe the novels have created it to be. I think in one of the things that they got wrong is they waited to green light part two until they saw
[00:32:24] the box numbers. well enough to get another one because I did feel invested, but I also was invested in the sense that I know that there's more that I want to find out and hopefully that gets revealed. And so in some ways, maybe they'll be a little bit more nuanced even in another film because now that it's been
[00:33:40] greenlit, you can kind of explore the space, handle a lot of word salad, a lot of proper nouns. I can say neir nayath arnoniyad. I can say telleran ryod. But I cannot keep track of all of these proper nouns. And they needed to slow it down. Because
[00:35:01] I was like, he's a what? He's a Benedict Cumber. I would have liked it better if they would have just kept to the original story. And then there are people like us who haven't read the books who just wanted the storytelling to be clearer and more simple and I don't know.
[00:36:23] I feel like you, you, you really so awesome. It should be the title of a movie on its own. Like what are you talking about? Just for anybody who hasn't John and anybody else who hasn't seen the 84 movie, the Atreides forces have this device they can attach to their throat and then they can focus their sound
[00:37:41] and they have a little handheld unit
[00:37:43] that can then shoot sound lasers basically. Would you be able to help us with who the Atreides are, who the Harkonnens are, and what the empire is, and what is the relationship between these sort of major power groups? I mean, yeah, so think of it like a triangle, basically, where the emperor ostensibly is
[00:39:01] and wants to be the one in control,
[00:39:04] but then at the same time,
[00:39:05] you have these very out so that, yeah, he can be more powerful. And should I think of the Emperor as sort of like,
[00:40:22] sort of a Palpatine kind of figure who's almost all powerful?
[00:40:25] No. I mean, I think if he were,
[00:41:26] I guess, because I think that on the surface, you kind of think, well, if spice is sort of the...
[00:41:27] Think of spice as oil.
[00:41:29] Most important aspect.
[00:41:30] Okay.
[00:41:31] Well, I know, but the emperor seems to be willing to punt on spice production in order
[00:41:37] to get this war going.
[00:41:39] They stockpiled.
[00:41:40] Right.
[00:41:41] Okay.
[00:41:42] That's helpful.
[00:41:43] He knew he was setting up, so it's a long... No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No!
[00:43:00] No!
[00:43:01] No!
[00:43:02] No!
[00:43:03] No!
[00:43:04] No!
[00:43:05] No!
[00:43:06] No!
[00:43:07] No!
[00:43:08] No! I guess is the problem part of the problem with doing a part one without telling us that apart is coming right? That was that was a big one Device didn't work. Yeah, I guess I would have but I like that They made as it was in day as Johnny is the one who opened with the narration and says iron on which is What happens in the 84 film in the books though?
[00:44:23] Yeah
[00:44:24] Well, you should let's say with you a Howard film? Um, I'm going to give it, uh, I'm going to give it a Howard plus two, probably because of scale and, uh, just, uh, overall just how consistent
[00:45:42] I've, I felt with the, with the tone.
[00:45:44] Um, and the 84 one, but I have a lot of problems with a lot of Howard films. So yeah, I think it was better than the average Ron Howard film. What about you, John? I'm gonna come in. I'm gonna say it's properly Howard. It's about a Ron Howard film, you know?
[00:47:00] It's got its good moments. It's got its bad moments. It entertains me, and then it doesn't.
[00:48:05] Get to know it. So I love this film loved it a lot. Yeah, I'm gonna jump into there Yeah, so I this was only the second time I watched this one
[00:48:09] And I was my schedule has been kind of wonky
[00:48:12] so I ended up watching it like to like 1 30 in the morning last night and I
[00:48:18] I was just I was like
[00:48:21] You know you watch them the second time the first time you see the sort of same thing as you ain't at the knee
[00:48:25] It's like okay, I'm kind of kind of giving this a shot. Let's go and I was taken by it
[00:49:23] those devices that will lift up the spice harvesters.
[00:49:24] Ariel.
[00:49:25] Yeah. The carry all that for the first time you saw those sort of ballooned vertical
[00:49:29] blimps that extended above.
[00:49:32] I love that.
[00:49:33] That's a show.
[00:49:34] I mean, there are carry all's in the harvesters and then the balloon
[00:49:39] lifting thing, that's a movie invention.
[00:49:42] Cause he never, he never really explains it in the, in the
[00:49:45] books as far as I can recall.
[00:49:46] So it's a, I agree.
[00:49:47] I think it's a brilliant adaptation.
[00:50:47] first part. So we don't have the entire series in mind. Is there half the battle one to grow on moment? Let's start with you, David. Don't ever make a bargain with the mustache twirling bad guy
[00:50:54] and think that they're going to actually deliver what they promise to you. So Dr. Yui, sorry dude,
[00:51:02] take a lesson. Don't believe the Baron. Alicia?
[00:52:03] Fantastic. Steve, you got a half a battle one to grow on.
[00:52:05] Hey, spice and moderation kids.
[00:52:09] Little bit to relax. Don't overdo it. Exactly. You know, like I said, maybe get the CBD spice, right?
[00:52:12] Just a little something to take the edge off.
[00:52:16] Well, this has been a delightful conversation.
[00:52:19] I feel like I, I just love this movie and I feel like,
[00:52:23] I feel like I could really benefit just dropped. I'm hype. Yeah, I figured. All right. All right. And Wheel of Time. And Wheel of Time. Steve, next week we are, we're doing RoboCop. Oh baby. So, so I'm looking for it. I don't, I think I might've seen a few scenes from the RoboCop remake, but I just watched
[00:53:40] the original RoboCop for the first time.
[00:53:42] Which is insane to me.
[00:53:43] It's insane to me that this is your first time watching RoboCop.
[00:53:46] You can't call yourself a Gen Xer, Anthony. I'm going to be a little bit more
