[00:00:00] Hey Wool-Shift Dustians!
[00:00:02] A little news.
[00:00:03] So today, on the day that this drops, we have a new podcast officially launching on the Lorehounds
[00:00:10] network and that is Nevermind the Music.
[00:00:14] So Nevermind the Music is two academics with a sense of humor who get together and talk
[00:00:20] about music through the lens of psychology and musicology and more.
[00:00:24] Get a taste of it right here, right now in the five minute preview that follows and then
[00:00:30] you'll find a link in the show notes where you can subscribe in your podcatcher of choice
[00:00:34] to hear more.
[00:00:35] And of course also stay subscribed here because coming up in October we have our Dune book
[00:00:41] breakdown and of course in November Silo Season 2 begins and we've been very busy, Abby
[00:00:49] and I on the book club finishing off the books and the short stories in our rewatch of Season
[00:00:55] 1 to prep.
[00:00:56] So we are ready to go.
[00:00:58] More news to follow in that soon.
[00:01:00] Alright, enjoy this quick first look at Nevermind the Music.
[00:01:06] Could the tone of this intro be us trying to decide what the tone of the intro is?
[00:01:10] It's key that people know that we're like academics but that we're doing this irreverently.
[00:01:14] That's what I want them to know.
[00:01:16] What would we say?
[00:01:17] Are you recording now?
[00:01:18] Yeah.
[00:01:18] Are we recording right now or recording?
[00:01:20] We're recording the pre-conversation.
[00:01:22] Oh my gosh.
[00:01:23] The pre-party.
[00:01:26] Hi, I'm Nicole.
[00:01:28] And I'm Mark and this is Nevermind the Music.
[00:01:31] Hey Mark, do you ever notice that when you're listening to music one part of the song
[00:01:35] just gets really stuck in your head and you like lumenate on it and you can't get
[00:01:38] out of your head?
[00:01:39] Absolutely and I've got some musical explanations for that but I bet you have some psychological
[00:01:44] explanations for it.
[00:01:46] I totally do.
[00:01:47] Anybody remember in high school or middle school or even college you had that professor
[00:01:53] that would every now and then just like waste a lot of time talking about random stuff.
[00:01:57] Yeah, but it's us.
[00:01:58] And half the time you're like, uh we have a test tomorrow but most of the time you're
[00:02:02] like yeah he's wasting time.
[00:02:06] That's this podcast.
[00:02:07] I think it is.
[00:02:08] I do that in my classes.
[00:02:09] I'm notorious for that that I have people like wear off track right now and like
[00:02:14] okay and like gosh nerd.
[00:02:16] You say that's right.
[00:02:17] That student but you say notorious like it's bad.
[00:02:21] That's where the meaningful learning happens.
[00:02:23] I think so.
[00:02:24] When someone raised their hand and they start talking about hardcore punk when I was teaching
[00:02:28] a lecture on Beethoven and we go on this 20 minute sidetrack that I feel like people
[00:02:32] are going to remember that better than if we just stuck to the planet.
[00:02:35] I think so.
[00:02:36] I mean maybe that's ADHD but I'm not sure and I think that-
[00:02:40] You're not a psychologist or anything?
[00:02:43] I'm not a psychologist.
[00:02:43] Oh wait a minute.
[00:02:44] We are two friends, one a psychology professor, the other a music professor talking about a song
[00:02:50] over a beer.
[00:02:52] Maybe we drank too much coffee.
[00:02:53] When we first started I told you when I- the first thing I do when I listen to a new song
[00:02:57] is I read the lyrics and you told me I was listening to music wrong.
[00:03:00] Oh no I did not tell you that.
[00:03:02] Are you kidding?
[00:03:02] You said you're like you're listening to it wrong and I was like how could it-
[00:03:05] how could it be wrong?
[00:03:07] If I said that I have edited it out of the podcast in shape because I did not mean to say that.
[00:03:12] Yeah you're like why are you doing it wrong?
[00:03:14] I was like well what's the right way?
[00:03:16] Mark what are some of the different songs that we've talked about so far in this pod?
[00:03:21] Well there's that time that we started talking about The Sign by Ace of Bass and I wanted
[00:03:25] to talk about how they do some cool key changes from major to minor and then you
[00:03:30] started talking about Jung's collective unconscious.
[00:03:33] How did we get there?
[00:03:35] It made sense at the time.
[00:03:37] I don't honestly-
[00:03:38] So I've written down the topics of the episodes.
[00:03:39] Yeah I don't even remember half the things that we talked about on here.
[00:03:42] So what about the episode where we talk about how the way a Dua Lipa songs melody is built
[00:03:46] is analogous to the various personality components of a person?
[00:03:49] Yeah that was really cool.
[00:03:51] We talked about like how you take like a foundation and keep adding and adding and
[00:03:55] adding on to it and that myriad of sound creates this really complex texture like
[00:04:00] the myriad of our personalities created with our life experiences.
[00:04:04] What I love about this podcast is I think I know why a piece of music works the
[00:04:09] way it works and I bring us on to the table and I'm like let me show you a cool
[00:04:12] chord or let me show you a cool melodic trick and you tell me actually why.
[00:04:17] There's like a brain thing going on like we're talking about a catchy melody
[00:04:21] and you're like let's talk about intrusive thoughts for a second.
[00:04:24] That conversation got weird though that intrusive thought.
