[00:00:27] Hello dear listeners, Alicia here, back with Luke for our second Silo Season 2 Mailbag.

[00:00:32] We'll be talking spoilers for the first three episodes of this season this time, so make sure you're caught up with both the show and our breakdowns.

[00:00:41] And Luke, what's our spoiler policy otherwise?

[00:00:44] Okay, so Alicia has read all the books that go into making up the TV series Silo.

[00:00:51] I have read none of them.

[00:00:55] But Alicia will be talking about stuff that has happened in the books up to Season 2 Episode 3.

[00:01:01] So that includes stuff that happened last season.

[00:01:05] But we won't be talking about anything that happened in the books past that point.

[00:01:10] Right.

[00:01:12] And there are a spoiler, extra spoiler casts you can find in the book club.

[00:01:17] You'll find those links in the show notes for anyone who is interested in that extra layer of spoilers with all the book spoiler speculation.

[00:01:26] So full disclosure though, Luke and I do have screeners this year.

[00:01:30] We're not watching ahead of the episodes.

[00:01:32] We're recording for the episode breakdowns.

[00:01:34] So all of our speculation and those episodes are genuine.

[00:01:38] But since we need to wait until the episodes have actually aired and people have been able to watch them before we can do these mailbag roundups, Luke and I have watched a little bit ahead of where we're recording now.

[00:01:49] So we're recording through Episode 3.

[00:01:51] Full disclosure, we've watched through Episode 5.

[00:01:54] We're actually going to be recording the Episode 5 breakdown immediately after we finish this recording.

[00:02:00] But we promise not to give anything away, but just to resume our small tease.

[00:02:04] So Luke, now that we've watched five episodes, how would you rank the five episodes of the season so far?

[00:02:11] No spoilers.

[00:02:12] I know you're more ambivalent about Episode 4 than I am.

[00:02:15] Listeners will hear why in a few days, but we haven't talked about Episode 5 yet.

[00:02:19] I would go Episode 5, 3, 2, 1, 4.

[00:02:31] Okay.

[00:02:31] Okay.

[00:02:32] Wow.

[00:02:32] More than ambivalent about Episode 4, I guess.

[00:02:35] Yeah.

[00:02:35] Good to know you.

[00:02:37] Good to know you.

[00:02:37] I mean, it's creating on a curve.

[00:02:39] This is silo.

[00:02:40] It's all good.

[00:02:41] It's all good.

[00:02:42] Right.

[00:02:42] Right.

[00:02:43] For me, I don't know.

[00:02:45] I kind of am in the place right now where I feel like each episode is better than the last, I guess, because it keeps building on what's happened in the last episode.

[00:02:54] Yeah.

[00:02:55] Oh, and by the way, listeners, if you think me and Alicia aren't getting off on the fact that we know more than you do and that we've got screeners, you are so wrong.

[00:03:04] I am enjoying the power and sense of omniscience.

[00:03:08] Well, speak for yourself.

[00:03:09] I'm stressed about it.

[00:03:12] Fair enough.

[00:03:13] There are advantages also to watching live with everybody else.

[00:03:17] And like, for instance, I'm not posting as much about it on Blue Sky because, yeah.

[00:03:22] You got to be careful what you post.

[00:03:23] Exactly.

[00:03:24] Exactly.

[00:03:25] Yeah.

[00:03:25] Yeah.

[00:03:26] And we have to be a little careful here, but, but yeah, we, we, we are locked in.

[00:03:31] We are talking episodes one through three spoilers and no further.

[00:03:36] Yeah.

[00:03:37] But I can tell listeners things are definitely reaching a crescendo by mid season.

[00:03:42] So we do these mailbag episodes every week or two as we can work it into our schedule.

[00:03:47] So do keep sharing your thoughts on the rest of the season.

[00:03:50] You can send them to woolshiftdustpodcast at gmail.com.

[00:03:53] That is the best way to do it.

[00:03:55] It makes my life easier.

[00:03:57] Um, but we also, of course, want you involved in the discussion on, uh, discord and blue sky.

[00:04:02] You'll find all those links in the show notes.

[00:04:04] But again, today we are covering, we're going to be focusing mostly on episodes two order and episode three solo of the second season.

[00:04:15] So here we go.

[00:04:17] Now opening the listener feedback channel.

[00:04:21] So this feedback is mostly grouped by person, but it's, I'll admit, it's a little haphazard.

[00:04:27] So just come along for the ride and we'll be talking through episodes two and three, especially, but like through each other.

[00:04:35] So we've got first from John after episode two, he said, okay, Robert, I'm sorry, but you, my friend are number one on my list of evil and doom.

[00:04:44] I don't know.

[00:04:45] You and I kind of, um, well, I guess maybe we can't comment on that.

[00:04:50] No, I guess we can't, but, but John, it's taken you the whole of season one and three episodes of season two to come to the conclusion that Sims might be a bit of a wrong.

[00:05:02] Like where have you been John?

[00:05:05] What show have you been watching?

[00:05:06] Oh, I think he's always thought that, but maybe just, you know, well, it's like we say the sit, we say Sims Nard for a reason because they both have their moments.

[00:05:16] Yeah.

[00:05:16] They certainly do.

[00:05:19] So Dan G after episode two says, just finished the pod for episode two.

[00:05:25] And I really enjoyed your discussion regarding Bernard's reaction to Meadows, giving up alcohol.

[00:05:29] Well, he may have had concern.

[00:05:31] I read his reaction as mostly skeptical.

[00:05:34] She had only been sober for a few hours and I saw a bit of mild bemusement in Bernard's reaction to this news.

[00:05:40] What makes Robbins, uh, Tim Robbins portrayal so great is that there were many emotions mixed in some very subtle acting.

[00:05:49] Yeah.

[00:05:50] Agreed.

[00:05:51] Yeah.

[00:05:52] I think, I think that's right.

[00:05:54] I mean, Tim Robbins is a, you know, Tim Robbins is a, no, it was an Oscar.

[00:05:59] I'm not sure whether he's an Oscar winner, but he's certainly an Oscar nominated.

[00:06:03] He's one of the greatest actors alive.

[00:06:05] We can say that.

[00:06:06] Yeah, basically.

[00:06:07] Yeah.

[00:06:09] Yeah.

[00:06:09] No, I think, um, there's a lot of people who are commenting on his reaction as far as,

[00:06:13] yeah, as far as him being skeptical about Meadows giving up alcohol.

[00:06:17] Yeah.

[00:06:17] I'm with you on that.

[00:06:18] Um, yeah, I think that makes sense.

[00:06:21] And I mean, as far as we know, she's been drinking heavily for years as well.

[00:06:25] Yeah.

[00:06:25] Like 25.

[00:06:26] So yeah.

[00:06:27] Yeah.

[00:06:29] After episode three, Denji says that was fun.

[00:06:32] Zahn was great.

[00:06:32] Great to see the Meadows character develop more.

[00:06:35] I really like how so many of the characters have history between them.

[00:06:38] Meadows and Bernard Sims in the retired Raider.

[00:06:41] Uh, I guess that's Camille Knox and Shirley.

[00:06:45] And now Juliet and Solo.

[00:06:46] Oh, and the retired Raider, I guess is Reggie from.

[00:06:49] Yeah.

[00:06:50] Uh, the one who shot, uh, yeah.

[00:06:52] Knox and Shirley.

[00:06:54] And now Juliet and Solo are for the first time each meeting someone new to their world.

[00:06:58] Did Juliet speak more lines of dialogue in this one episode than she had in all previous episodes combined?

[00:07:05] Not a criticism.

[00:07:06] Just to see her speak so much was a new aspect of her character.

[00:07:09] I do not think we've seen.

[00:07:11] Yeah, let's pause there.

[00:07:12] I think, um, I think that's also why she, like her conversations with Solo are so adorably awkward.

[00:07:19] Yeah.

[00:07:20] Cause like, Solo has been on his own for 20 plus years.

[00:07:23] Mm-hmm.

[00:07:24] And Juliet is not a, you know, she's not a very verbal, um, person.

[00:07:29] She's not, you know, she says what she wants to do by doing things rather than by talking about it.

[00:07:36] Right.

[00:07:36] And now she's put in this position, especially we see in episode three where she has to really coax him out of hiding.

[00:07:44] Yeah.

[00:07:45] And that's not necessarily, she's not the one known for the honey tongue, you know?

[00:07:51] Yeah.

[00:07:52] So, uh, Dan says, love the pod for episode three.

[00:07:55] Great discussion, which was fun to listen to.

[00:07:57] I do not think it's such a stretch for the order to rely on mechanical to be blamed for the silos problems.

[00:08:03] A look at us history shows how this allegory plays out in the mid to late 1800s.

[00:08:09] Poor white people in the South were convinced by wealthy slaveholders to fight in a war that benefited the wealthy, not the poor.

[00:08:16] Just over a hundred years later, the country was convinced to go to war overseas to fight the communist boogeyman in Vietnam.

[00:08:25] A generation later, this quote unquote Southern strategy solidified the former Confederacy to vote based on social issues, not economic ones.

[00:08:33] Today we see immigrants and the LGBT community take the place of mechanical.

[00:08:38] They are to blame for the ills of the poor white people, we are told, and plenty of voters buy in.

[00:08:43] And Paul Kent responded, having listened to it could be said, I'm now intrigued to hear Luke comments on that last part.

[00:08:50] Okay.

[00:08:51] I mean, well, thank you for listening to it could be said.

[00:08:54] We're always looking for, um, new listeners.

[00:08:58] Um, I mean, I think it's a little bit risky to draw straight parallels between our world and the silo because the silo is a much more precarious existence.

[00:09:11] Um, you know, it's an entirely artificial environment.

[00:09:16] Um, and whilst I, whilst I do take everything that was said there on board, the fact is that mechanical have much more leverage over the, the actual survival of the silo and the survival of all the people in it than any of the groups that were mentioned in that email.

[00:09:37] So whilst I think there are parts of silo that work as allegory for the real world.

[00:09:44] I also think it's a very different environment, literally a very different space.

[00:09:49] Um, and so I'm still not convinced about this whole idea about turning people against mechanical just because of the leverage mechanical have over everybody else.

[00:10:03] Yeah.

[00:10:05] Yeah.

[00:10:05] Yeah.

[00:10:06] I mean, I guess, yeah, it's not quite, I mean, I guess they're in a more abstract way.

[00:10:11] You could say for instance, with the immigrants now, um, immigrants often make up a lot of the, the workforce.

[00:10:18] So, you know, there's a current issue now where there's calls for mass deportations from the U S.

[00:10:25] Um, and, um, morality aside, just looking at the economic side of it, uh, there are great fears that, um, they, there's, there's reasoning that said it's to, uh, help ease, you know, the crunch on housing.

[00:10:41] Um, however, one of the issues with housing is that it is being built by the same people that they're trying to, um, deport.

[00:10:50] So that is going to get in the way of that.

[00:10:53] And it's, yeah, it's going to, um, it is shooting yourself in the foot to do things like this.

[00:10:58] And this does happen, but I suppose it's just so much more visible in the silo world because they literally.

[00:11:05] And so much more direct as well.

[00:11:08] Uh huh.

[00:11:08] I think is the issue.

[00:11:10] You don't have to like, you know, uh, think about it for a second to get it.

[00:11:14] It's like, but, uh, we can't talk about that, but we'll talk about an episode five, you know,

[00:11:22] We are being so careful.

[00:11:24] I know.

[00:11:25] See, this is hard.

[00:11:26] Yeah.

[00:11:28] Um, but I mean, in episode five, this is a question that will come up again.

[00:11:32] And well, I'll say we talked about it quite a lot in episode four too.

[00:11:35] Yeah.

[00:11:36] Um, but, uh, but I think we, yeah.

[00:11:38] So when you hear episode four, no Dan, that we, we had these conversations before getting

[00:11:43] your feedback and I do take that on board and I am trying to think about more, um, how this

[00:11:50] does fit with the real world analogy.

[00:11:51] And also I'm, I'm trying to, I know this is different for Luke's coming at it from the political

[00:11:56] science perspective and I'm trying not to be like, but in the book, even though you might

[00:12:01] hear me say that every time.

[00:12:04] Um, it's just, yeah, I, I, I, regardless, even when we get frustrated with how the show

[00:12:12] handles complex societal dynamics like that, the fact that it's asking these questions and

[00:12:18] pushing us to have these conversations says everything.

[00:12:21] Yeah.

[00:12:22] I think it does.

[00:12:23] Yeah.

[00:12:24] And that's why this is such a good show.

[00:12:26] Yeah.

[00:12:26] Well, one of the reasons, certainly one of the reasons, one of the reasons, obviously.

[00:12:30] Yeah.

[00:12:31] Okay.

[00:12:31] So Ashley S says after episode two, did anyone else notice the mention of OSHA in the order

[00:12:38] book, uh, Bernard referenced?

[00:12:39] You can only read the first few lines, but I thought that was very interesting.

[00:12:43] It states silo emergency action plan standard.

[00:12:46] Um, yeah, I, I have to say I should have paused and read.

[00:12:51] I know that, um, the graphic designers, um, like we talked about last season, Pippa, I

[00:12:56] forget her last name.

[00:12:57] Sorry.

[00:12:57] Uh, she specifically ended up writing a whole bunch of text for the pact.

[00:13:03] So maybe it was also her or someone else did the same for the order where they just filled

[00:13:07] in a bunch of the text.

[00:13:09] So there is stuff to read for the actors and for viewers who pause like that.

[00:13:13] So, um, yeah, I can see why it would be OSHA might be a basis for creating these plans.

[00:13:21] What do you think Luke?

[00:13:22] Yeah, no, that is interesting.

[00:13:24] Okay.

[00:13:25] And we can't rule out the possibility that the silos were originally built by the U S government.

[00:13:33] Hmm.

[00:13:33] Um, and therefore, you know, OSHA and other federal agencies might be canonical.

[00:13:40] Hmm.

[00:13:41] Um, in this universe.

[00:13:43] Yep.

[00:13:44] Yeah.

[00:13:44] So far, the only location clue we've gotten is a tour guide in Georgia.

[00:13:49] So Georgia is in the U S state, not the European country.

[00:13:54] Yeah.

[00:13:54] Um, and Ashley says also just a correction from the pod.

[00:13:58] I don't think Bernard watched until Juliet took the helmet off.

[00:14:02] He tells the screen device to stop after she gets close to the entry to silo 17.

[00:14:06] So I don't know if he recognized that he needs to act now before watching more, or if that's demonstrating him watching back the quote unquote video from Juliet suits after it already happened.

[00:14:16] It's unclear to me, but I thought that was interesting.

[00:14:20] Um, yeah, yeah.

[00:14:22] The timing because they did like the whole episode one in silo 17 and then the whole episode two in silo 18, how the timing lines up isn't clear.

[00:14:32] But considering that alarm goes off, that stupid alarm.

[00:14:38] Um, I guess he maybe was watching that live, but why would he stop watching then?

[00:14:45] But by the way, if I can find it, I'll share, I'll share an interview.

[00:14:49] I was reading with Graham Yost the other day.

[00:14:52] I should have.

[00:14:53] Okay.

[00:14:53] The showrunner.

[00:14:54] And he was saying that the original, one of the original ideas they had for season two was to keep, um, that bifurcated structure.

[00:15:05] One episode in one silo, one episode in another up until episode six and then bring them back together at the halfway point.

[00:15:14] But they basically gave up on that because they thought it'd be too infuriating for the audience.

[00:15:19] I agree.

[00:15:20] What do you think?

[00:15:22] Yeah, I think that's right.

[00:15:24] Yeah.

[00:15:24] I mean, even I already see with episode three people being like, Oh, few, because also people, well, I remember people have their favorite characters and a lot of people's favorite characters, Juliet, for instance.

[00:15:34] And then, you know, it's selling the other story short.

[00:15:38] Yeah.

[00:15:38] I like them together in the same story and also makes it more clear.

[00:15:42] They're playing out at the same time.

[00:15:43] Yeah.

[00:15:44] Yeah.

[00:15:47] So Ashley says, I was on the edge of my seat realizing what this could mean for Sims.

[00:15:51] Bernard clearly does not trust him beyond his current role.

[00:15:54] So I wonder what will come of that.

[00:15:55] And Camille, it seems the Sims household may be in trouble.

[00:15:59] I just rewatched and noticed the other three books.

[00:16:03] Mary Meadows has the story of Beowulf, a pre calculus textbook, and what appears to be a Collins English dictionary.

[00:16:11] So yeah, I think.

[00:16:14] I think that whatever supply this is Alicia speaking, I think whatever supply solo has where he's getting like his music from and his knowledge of.

[00:16:25] Oh, well, I guess we can't.

[00:16:26] And his reading, whatever his reading may be.

[00:16:29] Um, I think he's pulling from that Mary Meadows, you know, she was given free reign to pull from that same stockpile.

[00:16:37] Yeah.

[00:16:38] Um, I'd like to see some more modern literature being referenced.

[00:16:43] You know, I want to, I want a Dan Brown novel.

[00:16:45] Hmm.

[00:16:46] There's one of the relics or I don't know, like, yeah, silence of the lambs or something.

[00:16:52] Everything seems, everything seems to be sort of 19th century or early 20th century.

[00:16:58] Well, I guess it depends on who put the relics there.

[00:17:01] Did they come in accidentally with people or was it carefully supervised what was allowed?

[00:17:09] Oh, that's a question.

[00:17:11] Um, so Ashley says, correction, there are more than three books, but those are the only three I could identify.

[00:17:16] I could identify.

[00:17:17] Well, thank you for picking out those three.

[00:17:19] I didn't notice Beowulf or the pre-calc or yeah.

[00:17:22] Um, but that, okay.

[00:17:24] Mm hmm.

[00:17:25] And she says, I also found it interesting that judge Meadows first name is Mary, another biblical name.

[00:17:30] And so Bernard thinks Juliet is actually dead, right?

[00:17:33] We never saw confirmation that he watched her enter Silas 17.

[00:17:36] So I'm assuming at this point, he genuinely thinks she's dead.

[00:17:40] And yeah, that's my question because does he actually, because I guess he knows she went.

[00:17:46] And in there, but I guess, I guess he thinks there's no way she could survive in there.

[00:17:50] But yeah, I mean, the actual, is it, is it episode three where he actually says that?

[00:17:56] I'm what I'm getting.

[00:17:58] Cause he says to Meadows when they, that she's dead.

[00:18:02] Yeah.

[00:18:02] Yeah.

[00:18:02] When they meet in the, in the, the bunker that.

[00:18:06] Yeah.

[00:18:06] I think that was episode three.

[00:18:07] Yeah.

[00:18:08] Yeah.

[00:18:09] Yeah.

[00:18:09] That he said, but then again, I never know if he's lying to Meadows or not, you know?

[00:18:13] It's true.

[00:18:13] It's true.

[00:18:14] Any words that come out of his mouth could be a lie.

[00:18:16] This is very true.

[00:18:17] Yeah.

[00:18:17] Yeah.

[00:18:19] So after episode three, Ashley says, I loved seeing Juliet struggle to connect with Solo.

[00:18:25] The way he runs after her.

[00:18:26] My heart.

[00:18:27] So sweet.

[00:18:28] The reveal that had me most excited though, was that they confirmed the quote unquote medicine

[00:18:33] used to control people's memories.

[00:18:34] I wonder what the extent to which they can calibrate the dosages, but it sounds like Sims is comfortable

[00:18:41] knowing what he can get away with.

[00:18:43] And I would say with Sims, like, I don't know if I believe him on this or not either.

[00:18:48] No, I don't.

[00:18:49] I don't, I don't think you can, I don't think you can calibrate.

[00:18:52] Um, I just don't think you can calibrate drugs that precisely.

[00:18:57] I mean, I don't, I mean, we don't know what they are necessarily capable of, but I don't,

[00:19:03] yeah, he's just another one.

[00:19:04] Anytime he says something 50% chances to lie.

[00:19:08] Same with his wife, even though I like her.

[00:19:12] Uh, Ashley says another fascinating reveal from Meadows.

[00:19:15] The order states to blame mechanical and unite the rest of the silo against them.

[00:19:19] Wow.

[00:19:19] No wonder she feels so much guilt and shame for her years of service.

[00:19:23] Yeah.

[00:19:23] I think, I think Meadows is smarter than the order personally.

[00:19:27] I think Meadows has outgrown it.

[00:19:29] Mm hmm.

[00:19:30] Mm hmm.

[00:19:30] And maybe that's why she left.

[00:19:32] Yeah.

[00:19:33] There's also whatever the secret is that.

[00:19:35] Yeah.

[00:19:36] Um, Ashley asks, has anyone else been pondering whether people from other silos have successfully

[00:19:41] infiltrated 18 ever since Martha said she had a nightmare that everyone in the silo left

[00:19:46] her.

[00:19:46] I started to wonder if she wasn't originally from 18.

[00:19:49] If that's a dead end, I'm still thinking about the possibility or was there maybe a mass exodus

[00:19:55] from 18 through the door in the digger room back when the quote unquote rebellion happened.

[00:19:59] I don't know all fun things.

[00:20:01] I don't know all fun things.

[00:20:02] I'm wondering either way, Knox knows more than he's telling people.

[00:20:05] He, he says he knows what the names down in the tunnel mean now.

[00:20:09] I can't wait to find out what that means.

[00:20:12] Do you want to comment on the, um, idea of people infiltrating 18?

[00:20:17] Well, I mean, I think it's entirely possible.

[00:20:21] So at some point in like the deep history of the silos that there were was migration between

[00:20:30] the silos.

[00:20:30] Mm hmm.

[00:20:31] I mean, I've, I've said for, I've said all season long and I think I might've even said

[00:20:36] it in season one that I think the silos are connected in some way.

[00:20:41] Mm hmm.

[00:20:42] Or at least, at least have been connected in some way.

[00:20:46] Hmm.

[00:20:48] I'm not sure I buy Martha having come from another silo.

[00:20:52] I think that's probably too recent.

[00:20:55] Mm hmm.

[00:20:55] But it's certainly possible, like at some point in the distant past that, that people

[00:21:04] from other silos, the people from these 50 silos intermingled, intermarried, you know,

[00:21:11] were part of a much more cohesive home.

[00:21:16] Hmm.

[00:21:17] Yeah.

[00:21:18] So the, the tunnel down from the digger room is a show edition.

[00:21:22] So I am as lost on that as anyone else.

[00:21:26] Um, it seems to me unlikely that Martha or the others came from another silo, but I

[00:21:31] can't roll it out.

[00:21:33] I don't know.

[00:21:34] I don't know what the tunnels about.

[00:21:36] I need to find out.

[00:21:39] All right.

[00:21:40] So Ashley ends with my theory or hope is that Juliet and solo will make suits and leave

[00:21:45] silo 17 in time to run into slash save Meadows and bring her back to 18.

[00:21:50] I never even thought about Juliet coming back out 17 through the top.

[00:21:54] So now I've gotten my head about the timing of that and Meadows trip outside.

[00:22:00] Yeah.

[00:22:01] Yeah.

[00:22:02] Let's say that that is.

[00:22:04] Yeah.

[00:22:04] Well, I feel like I can't, there's books, spoiler things.

[00:22:07] I can't say, but, uh, yeah, they do seem to be pointing at something like that.

[00:22:14] Maybe.

[00:22:14] Yeah.

[00:22:14] Yeah.

[00:22:16] Um, so her Royal bubbliness says after episode two, Bernard came off as more human because

[00:22:22] I always thought he was omniscient on the silo, but this episode showed he wasn't at all.

[00:22:27] I think Bernard underestimates Sims on how perceptive he is.

[00:22:31] And that may become his undoing.

[00:22:32] As Luke said, one might just kill the other this season.

[00:22:36] What do you think?

[00:22:36] Do you think Bernard underestimates Sims?

[00:22:39] No, actually, I think he's got a very good handle on who Sims is.

[00:22:43] Yeah.

[00:22:44] But I don't think he's got as good a handle on what he might be capable of.

[00:22:49] Hmm.

[00:22:50] Um, I guess that's underestimating.

[00:22:53] Sort of, sort of.

[00:22:55] Um, but yeah, no, I don't, I don't think Sims is cleverer than Bernard thinks he is.

[00:23:00] He might be more ruthless than Bernard thinks he is.

[00:23:03] Hmm.

[00:23:04] Hmm.

[00:23:06] Oh, I think also Bernard may not realize at this point how much of a role Sims very clever

[00:23:15] wife plays.

[00:23:16] Yeah.

[00:23:17] His decision making.

[00:23:18] So maybe he's underestimating the Sims family unit as a whole.

[00:23:24] Yeah.

[00:23:25] Yeah.

[00:23:26] Uh, she continues.

[00:23:28] What do we think is running through the mind of Juliet's father as he just sits watching

[00:23:32] the screen the next day?

[00:23:34] This just made me think of how in real life, in the call for justice and truth, we completely

[00:23:39] lose sight of the people close to the victim and asking how they're feeling.

[00:23:43] Yeah.

[00:23:45] Uh, I'd like to see how he's like, um, taking comfort, I guess, in, we see him stage his own

[00:23:53] rebellion in the next episode with the, with the birth control and the, you know, not,

[00:23:58] uh, doing the code orange thing that he was told to do.

[00:24:01] So I think he's, he's being inspired by her.

[00:24:05] I think he's handling it very well considering, but it seems like anytime there's like a baby

[00:24:09] girl within arm's reach, he's cuddling.

[00:24:11] He's cuddled that baby.

[00:24:13] Yes.

[00:24:13] It's true.

[00:24:14] There's a lot, there's, there's a lot of, there's a lot of surrogate parents, surrogate

[00:24:18] parenting going on.

[00:24:19] Yeah.

[00:24:20] Yeah.

[00:24:21] And he's like, baby girls for everyone.

[00:24:22] Name the baby.

[00:24:26] Oh, oh, poor daddy.

[00:24:28] Dr. Nichols.

[00:24:29] Yeah.

[00:24:29] Good things for him.

[00:24:31] Luke wants him to die.

[00:24:32] Apparently I'm just kidding.

[00:24:33] I know.

[00:24:34] I don't want him to die.

[00:24:36] I just think you will.

[00:24:37] You just keep predicting it.

[00:24:38] Yeah.

[00:24:38] There's a difference.

[00:24:39] Yeah.

[00:24:41] All right.

[00:24:42] So, um, precious asks, does Bernard also desire a hot air balloon or he's a believer

[00:24:48] through and through come hell or high water.

[00:24:50] I'm deeply intrigued by judge Meadows and I want to know everything.

[00:24:53] And yeah, I think judge Meadows is like, like I said, it's show edition, but she like

[00:24:59] rapidly became my, maybe my favorite character this season.

[00:25:03] She's certainly the most enigmatic character.

[00:25:06] I think we've run into in the silo and like what, what she really wants and what she really

[00:25:13] believes are still something of a mystery.

[00:25:16] I just, I always love people who are both clever and willing to call bullshit.

[00:25:21] And she is both of those things to a T.

[00:25:26] I mean, in answer to your question, um, precious, I think Bernard believes in protecting the silo

[00:25:34] above all else.

[00:25:36] And that belief is pure and it's genuine.

[00:25:39] Yeah.

[00:25:40] Yeah.

[00:25:41] Okay.

[00:25:42] So Abby, who is my cohost for the silo spoiler casts, uh, after episode two, she said the

[00:25:48] most shocking part to me was the fact that judge Meadows, Mary was Bernard's former shadow,

[00:25:53] a very interesting relationship.

[00:25:55] Still lots to find out.

[00:25:57] Why did she quit?

[00:25:58] How was that even possible or allowed?

[00:26:00] What secret is she hiding that Bernard doesn't know about?

[00:26:03] Was she working in judicial before she became temporarily Bernard's shadow and went back to her

[00:26:08] former job with a promotion to judge and the perks thereof?

[00:26:12] Also after 25 years in the bottle, she will have a rough time now with all the resolve

[00:26:17] about quitting that will not go smoothly.

[00:26:20] Bernard's skepticism is warranted.

[00:26:22] Very good acting from both.

[00:26:23] Talks about this a lot with Alicia on the episode two spoiler cast.

[00:26:26] So yeah.

[00:26:30] Thoughts.

[00:26:31] I mean, I do.

[00:26:33] Yeah.

[00:26:34] Uh, the question still remains like, what is the process, um, for the shadows in the

[00:26:43] TV show?

[00:26:44] What, how far did she get into that process?

[00:26:47] How much does she know?

[00:26:48] What does Bernard know that she doesn't?

[00:26:50] Why and how did she quit?

[00:26:52] Um, the episode four spoiler cast will be about shadowing the head of it and what all that

[00:27:00] entails.

[00:27:00] So there will be some speculation there, but we're still waiting to find out what the show

[00:27:06] answers to these questions are.

[00:27:07] And I mean, there must be a way of shadows quitting or being removed and replaced because

[00:27:15] it must happen all the time that you thought somebody was going to be an appropriate shadow

[00:27:20] and it turns out that they're not, or.

[00:27:22] Well, I would say.

[00:27:23] It just doesn't suit them.

[00:27:25] I would say that's not a problem for every other job in the silo except head of it because

[00:27:30] head of a, the shadow for the head of it ends up learning the secrets.

[00:27:36] That's true.

[00:27:38] Um, and I do think in that regard, you know, that the perks that we saw Mary, that we, you

[00:27:44] know, that we see her having the, um, the access to the relics and all that.

[00:27:48] I feel like that's not because she's a judge, but specifically because she's an ex shadow

[00:27:54] head of it.

[00:27:54] Like this is sort of a shut you up.

[00:27:57] Okay.

[00:27:58] Yeah.

[00:27:59] Yeah, exactly.

[00:28:00] Yeah.

[00:28:01] I think that's probably right.

[00:28:03] Right.

[00:28:03] So after episode three, Abby said, can they just move and sit in a more stable place rather

[00:28:08] than on that bridge?

[00:28:10] Just looking at that last shot of them on that narrow bridge is giving me vertigo.

[00:28:15] Steve's on is just perfect for this role and does the nervous hermit very well.

[00:28:19] He just craves connection with another real human being.

[00:28:22] Jules is sometimes blunt.

[00:28:23] Why are you alive?

[00:28:24] But also she gets it, especially being a longtime friend of Martha Walker, uh, gives her some

[00:28:30] experience and understanding.

[00:28:32] Another thought notice how Bernard talks about Jules as if he's so surprised that she figured

[00:28:37] stuff out beyond his analytics as if he can't conceive of another person in the 10,000 who

[00:28:44] can be as smart as him.

[00:28:46] Hopefully this underestimation of people will be his undoing.

[00:28:50] By the way, spoiler alert to Bernie boy, Holston figured out the cameras before Jules.

[00:28:55] Even with all the surveillance, you can't watch and know everything.

[00:28:59] Okay.

[00:28:59] I be, I am now going to call him Bernie boy until the show ends.

[00:29:07] Yeah.

[00:29:08] I mean, yeah, I think, um, this is, this is one thing that worries me about him and Meadows

[00:29:15] is that I personally, I think she's more clever than him.

[00:29:20] Like he's smart in, he's smart in the puzzle box kind of way, but she has more wisdom.

[00:29:26] I think in the way she's like, forget what, you know, he has to get instructions from a

[00:29:31] book and she's like, let's use our brains here for a minute, Bernie boy.

[00:29:35] And, um, let's think about like, maybe don't arrest someone from the down deep when they're

[00:29:41] on the verge of writing, you know?

[00:29:43] I mean, and just the fact that she is more clever than him is worrying to him.

[00:29:50] I'm sure.

[00:29:51] Yeah, I mean, I think Bernie boy is intelligent, but Meadows is wise.

[00:29:56] Yeah.

[00:29:56] Yeah, I think that's the distinction.

[00:29:59] Mhm.

[00:29:59] Agreed.

[00:30:27] Okay.

[00:30:31] Okay.

[00:30:32] So Rocky's in after episode two says someone better get her that damn hot air balloon.

[00:30:36] LOL.

[00:30:38] Interesting how Bernard is using Juliet's accomplishment as a positive.

[00:30:42] I like how he did that, but it obviously will backfire.

[00:30:45] I think Knox wants the guy in the down deep to make him a weapon.

[00:30:48] So he has the only one.

[00:30:50] Yeah.

[00:30:51] What do you think?

[00:30:51] So the guy in the down deep was again, the character's name is Mark Chambers.

[00:30:55] And he was the one in like the metal working shop who's used as the cool steampunk wheel.

[00:31:01] Yeah, the cool steampunk wheelchair.

[00:31:03] Yeah, possibly.

[00:31:06] Because like the metal working shop, they might be able to produce primitive firearms.

[00:31:12] So it wouldn't just be like, you know, a big lump of metal to hit somebody over the head with.

[00:31:17] They might be able to produce like a single shot rifle or a single shot pistol.

[00:31:24] I mean, we know that judicial has like actual guns, but yeah, they might be able to make their version of it or something.

[00:31:31] But then he asked Knox, asked Mark not to make weapons for anybody else who asked.

[00:31:37] But Mark kind of looked around before he said yes.

[00:31:39] So jury's out.

[00:31:41] Yeah.

[00:31:42] And that kind of implies that they have experience in making weapons or at least the know how to do it.

[00:31:48] I mean, I guess if you need to work metal, where else are you going to go?

[00:31:53] It's true.

[00:31:54] It's true.

[00:31:54] Awesome.

[00:31:56] After episode three, Rocky Zim says, I liked seeing Meadows watching the videos of life before the silo.

[00:32:02] I thought for a minute it could be Meadows as a kid, but that would be too long ago, I think.

[00:32:06] And yeah, I wanted to include this one just because I saw a lot of people speculating on what the videos were that she was watching.

[00:32:13] And I take it to be just it was it was all different sorts of families and stuff.

[00:32:18] I just take it to be a collection of home videos that's in the relics.

[00:32:22] Yeah.

[00:32:23] Just random home videos from the before times.

[00:32:26] Yeah.

[00:32:28] Satuichi says, Walker might be my favorite character.

[00:32:31] Full stop.

[00:32:32] Like, that's fair.

[00:32:33] I felt that needed to be heard.

[00:32:35] Yeah.

[00:32:43] Secret area below the silo where she fell asleep.

[00:32:47] Nice guy from way back after Mayor John's was poisoned.

[00:32:50] I tense up whenever someone is offered a drink.

[00:32:53] So, yes.

[00:32:55] Agreed.

[00:32:56] Agreed.

[00:32:56] Yeah.

[00:32:57] As far as Knox, I'm curious how you feel after episode three, Maureen, because I was saying that's where he was starting to get a redemption arc with me.

[00:33:06] Let's face it.

[00:33:07] We all did stupid stuff when we were kids.

[00:33:10] Yeah.

[00:33:11] Well, yeah.

[00:33:11] He was like in his 20s, but OK.

[00:33:14] He was at this stupid age of early 20s.

[00:33:16] We all did stupid stuff in our 20s as well.

[00:33:19] Yes.

[00:33:20] This is true.

[00:33:20] This is true.

[00:33:22] So just some we talked about this last season, but Paul Kent pointed out Billy Postlethright, Hank, is the son of the late British actor Pete Postlethright, who was a very familiar television actor here in the UK and movies.

[00:33:37] And Lestou said one of my favorite performances of his was The Usual Suspects.

[00:33:42] And Maureen D says he was also in the name of the father.

[00:33:46] I know you also.

[00:33:47] He was Mr. Kobayashi.

[00:33:50] Hmm.

[00:33:50] My favorite Pete Postlethright performance is in a film called Brassed Off, which also includes a very, very, very young Ewan McGregor, like a baby Ewan McGregor.

[00:34:02] I don't even know that movie.

[00:34:03] Okay.

[00:34:04] It's about a brass band at the Yorkshire Colliery competing in like, it's the typical like, you know, outsider competing in the big prestigious competition in the capital and they win.

[00:34:19] Okay.

[00:34:20] Okay.

[00:34:20] Yeah.

[00:34:21] I mean, I definitely, he was one of those faces that I knew, but I wasn't as familiar with him as you Brits are.

[00:34:27] Yeah.

[00:34:27] Like he's one of those guys that turns up that was in everything that was on British television in the nineties and early noughties.

[00:34:36] Yeah.

[00:34:36] Yeah.

[00:34:37] And Maureen also points out Rick Gomez, Patrick Kennedy was in Band of Brothers playing a great character that did impressions, which I've heard.

[00:34:45] I know people recognize Rick Gomez from other things.

[00:34:48] Oh shit.

[00:34:49] Really?

[00:34:49] You know who he is?

[00:34:50] He was gonorrhea.

[00:34:53] He was gonorrhea?

[00:34:54] Oh my God.

[00:34:55] What's the character's name?

[00:34:56] I didn't watch Band of Brothers.

[00:34:57] The character's name was Garnier, so everybody called him gonorrhea.

[00:35:03] Of course he is.

[00:35:05] Oh, how stupid of me not to recognize it.

[00:35:09] Oh man.

[00:35:11] Well, I do want to see him in more stuff after seeing his performance in this show.

[00:35:15] He really made me laugh.

[00:35:17] Oh wow.

[00:35:18] I can't believe I didn't pick up on that.

[00:35:23] Yeah.

[00:35:23] I guess he's Ben and other stuff.

[00:35:25] Yeah.

[00:35:25] Yeah.

[00:35:27] Okay.

[00:35:28] Do 71,

[00:35:28] AKA Stu says,

[00:35:30] just watch the app and I will definitely be watching again this weekend and pausing the moment.

[00:35:35] Bernard opens the order.

[00:35:36] So this is about episode two.

[00:35:38] From the get go.

[00:35:39] This episode was just fire.

[00:35:40] I am just going to gush over season two,

[00:35:43] just cracking TV.

[00:35:44] If David gets the chance to watch,

[00:35:47] can't remember if he is or not,

[00:35:48] would be interested in his take on some of the production work in episodes one and two.

[00:35:53] Episode one seemed close in tight and almost claustrophobic,

[00:35:57] reflecting Jules and her journey into Silo 17.

[00:36:00] Whereas in episode two,

[00:36:02] it felt really cinematic,

[00:36:03] even in the scenes of one to ones.

[00:36:06] Loving what the showrunners are doing

[00:36:08] and the differences between what's on screen and what's in the books is really interesting.

[00:36:12] Will we see Meadows taking the long walk?

[00:36:15] Oh,

[00:36:16] and I have to say,

[00:36:17] Hank is turning out to be a real quote unquote company man in this episode.

[00:36:22] Episode two,

[00:36:22] again,

[00:36:23] bro side with mechanical,

[00:36:24] or you might become a copper.

[00:36:29] Um,

[00:36:30] and then after he says done my rewatch of episode two and I'm with Alicia.

[00:36:34] It was a lovely tender moment of doc Nichols,

[00:36:38] cradling the baby girl,

[00:36:39] showing the deep feelings he is holding in check about Jules,

[00:36:42] such a fleeting moment,

[00:36:44] but beautifully played on second viewing.

[00:36:46] I withdraw my statement about Hank being a company man.

[00:36:49] He's just a guy getting by trying not to upset the apple cart.

[00:36:53] He's good people in a bad situation.

[00:36:56] The judge is certainly a complex character and loving the dynamic between her and Bernard.

[00:37:01] Is she the only other person in the silo he respects?

[00:37:04] Certainly seems that way.

[00:37:05] Rebellion is starting to spread and I don't think Foxy Noxy is going to be able to contain it.

[00:37:10] I got strong flashbacks to the expanse when Bernard was walking down the silo and spotted the Juliet lives graffiti.

[00:37:17] All I could think was remember the count.

[00:37:21] So,

[00:37:22] yeah,

[00:37:23] I mean,

[00:37:24] I'm glad you came around on Hank.

[00:37:26] Yeah,

[00:37:27] I mean,

[00:37:27] Hank is rapidly becoming one of my favorite characters.

[00:37:31] He is in a tough position.

[00:37:33] He is in a tough position,

[00:37:34] but I do think,

[00:37:35] I think it's hearts in the right place.

[00:37:37] And I think,

[00:37:37] I think it's the same with like,

[00:37:38] he knocks and Shirley,

[00:37:40] all of their hearts are in the right place,

[00:37:42] but like,

[00:37:42] can they get their methodology or aligned?

[00:37:45] Yeah.

[00:37:45] You know,

[00:37:46] because they're all,

[00:37:46] they all feel pulled with different,

[00:37:49] you know,

[00:37:49] they all think doing the right thing looks a little differently than each other at this point.

[00:37:53] Yeah,

[00:37:54] I think that's right.

[00:37:55] Yeah.

[00:38:24] All right.

[00:38:25] tape.

[00:38:26] If it is in his best interest,

[00:38:27] even if they were an item before,

[00:38:29] he is the snakiest snake that ever snaked.

[00:38:34] I have to agree.

[00:38:37] Ashley says,

[00:38:37] I agree with you at the TCS that,

[00:38:40] uh,

[00:38:40] they have a history and it's the closest thing Bernard might have had to a relationship,

[00:38:44] but I still ultimately believe that Bernard would betray Meadows to protect an uprising,

[00:38:49] uh,

[00:38:50] to prevent an uprising.

[00:38:51] Maureen D says also,

[00:38:53] if a second person goes over the hill,

[00:38:55] that could cause an uprising as well.

[00:38:57] And he must figure out that she will die any,

[00:39:00] and he must figure that she will die anyway.

[00:39:02] Sub-Zero says,

[00:39:03] should we start shipping Bernard in Meadows?

[00:39:07] Bernardows?

[00:39:08] Maynard.

[00:39:09] And I point out that her first name is Mary.

[00:39:11] So I suggested Marnard,

[00:39:12] but for Elisa Wins,

[00:39:14] she says their couple name is Burnary.

[00:39:17] What do you think?

[00:39:18] Burnary.

[00:39:19] Yeah.

[00:39:19] Are you on board with Burnary?

[00:39:21] Yeah,

[00:39:22] I'm here for the Burnary.

[00:39:23] Yeah.

[00:39:24] Here for the Burnary.

[00:39:25] Feel the Burnary.

[00:39:26] Feel the Burnary.

[00:39:27] Yeah.

[00:39:28] All right.

[00:39:28] After episode two,

[00:39:29] Sub-Zero said,

[00:39:30] I'm not sure how he's getting the helmet feed from so far away.

[00:39:33] It's not Bluetooth.

[00:39:34] There has to be a satellite link or something akin to a cell

[00:39:37] tower.

[00:39:38] Maybe we have someone with an IT background on here that can chime in.

[00:39:42] I'm fascinated by the stark contrast of the analog lives for the citizens of

[00:39:47] the silo juxtaposed with all this high tech gear being used to control them.

[00:39:51] And yeah,

[00:39:52] we see quite a difference in the level of technology between first of all,

[00:39:58] now we've seen like the highest level of technology in that secret bunker room.

[00:40:02] Yeah.

[00:40:03] Which by the way,

[00:40:04] I have to point out that someone else pointed out that if you look as their show,

[00:40:10] a wide shot of that bunker room,

[00:40:12] the version that Bernard's in,

[00:40:14] obviously we haven't seen inside solo set.

[00:40:15] Um,

[00:40:16] there is a door in the back on the right,

[00:40:19] a closed door.

[00:40:20] Ah,

[00:40:20] okay.

[00:40:21] So just,

[00:40:22] yeah,

[00:40:22] that was pointed out to me that it's there.

[00:40:24] So I'm passing that on.

[00:40:25] And,

[00:40:26] uh,

[00:40:26] yeah.

[00:40:27] So that bunker complex could be larger than what we've seen on screen.

[00:40:31] Right.

[00:40:31] Which makes me feel better for solo.

[00:40:33] He's been in there 25 years.

[00:40:35] Well,

[00:40:35] it might explain where all the chicken stout is coming from.

[00:40:38] Maybe,

[00:40:39] maybe.

[00:40:40] Yeah.

[00:40:41] Yeah.

[00:40:41] I don't think it's in the drawers around them that we,

[00:40:43] um,

[00:40:45] but yeah,

[00:40:46] so we see that's the highest level of technology that we've seen.

[00:40:49] And also we see that,

[00:40:51] um,

[00:40:52] the projector that,

[00:40:53] uh,

[00:40:53] Mary is watching those home videos on that looks a little bit ahead of our

[00:40:57] time.

[00:40:58] Yeah.

[00:40:59] I think we mentioned that in the,

[00:41:00] yeah.

[00:41:02] And then,

[00:41:03] and then we see a jump down to what's what the janitor's closet see with the

[00:41:08] watcher see the,

[00:41:10] and,

[00:41:10] um,

[00:41:11] that's,

[00:41:12] it's still video,

[00:41:13] but it's,

[00:41:13] you know,

[00:41:14] it's slightly rather than being slightly ahead of us.

[00:41:16] It's maybe on point with us,

[00:41:18] maybe slightly behind,

[00:41:19] slightly behind.

[00:41:20] Yeah.

[00:41:21] Yeah.

[00:41:21] And then versus the rest of the silo who they don't even have cameras for

[00:41:25] pictures.

[00:41:26] They're like drawing their loved ones to hang on the walls because they

[00:41:29] don't,

[00:41:29] I mean,

[00:41:29] they,

[00:41:30] they do have computers.

[00:41:32] So they have,

[00:41:32] they have very basic like eighties computers.

[00:41:35] I would have said like seventies dos kind of,

[00:41:38] yeah.

[00:41:39] Yeah.

[00:41:41] Um,

[00:41:42] well,

[00:41:42] late seventies is still like room falls,

[00:41:44] but yeah.

[00:41:44] Like,

[00:41:45] yeah.

[00:41:45] It's sort of late eighties.

[00:41:46] Yeah.

[00:41:47] Uh,

[00:41:48] first generation kind of Mac.

[00:41:49] Yeah.

[00:41:50] Yeah.

[00:41:51] Yes.

[00:41:52] But,

[00:41:52] uh,

[00:41:53] and they,

[00:41:53] they know the rest of the silo knows photographs exist because they have

[00:41:57] photographs on their IDs,

[00:41:58] but they don't have cameras at home.

[00:42:00] And most of them have no idea that there's cam like video cameras

[00:42:05] monitoring them all over.

[00:42:06] That's something Juliet was,

[00:42:08] had her mind blown by.

[00:42:09] They've never seen a video.

[00:42:10] Do you think there are silo wide pong tournaments?

[00:42:14] Pong tournament?

[00:42:15] Yeah.

[00:42:15] You know,

[00:42:15] with the,

[00:42:16] with the computer,

[00:42:16] like the,

[00:42:18] the two lines and button the ball backwards and forwards.

[00:42:22] Um,

[00:42:23] I can't,

[00:42:24] I can't imagine that they leave communications between computers to open.

[00:42:30] I can tell you,

[00:42:31] they haven't said much about it in the show,

[00:42:32] but I can tell you in the books,

[00:42:34] um,

[00:42:34] they've already talked a lot by this point about how expensive it is to send

[00:42:37] electronic messages,

[00:42:39] which is Juliet figures out is before she takes her walk,

[00:42:42] she figures out like,

[00:42:44] Oh,

[00:42:44] they're blocking us from communicating freely.

[00:42:47] Duh.

[00:42:48] Yeah.

[00:42:49] Cause that's actually one thing we haven't seen a lot of.

[00:42:52] We've seen festivals in the silo,

[00:42:55] but we haven't seen much of what people do in their free time.

[00:43:00] Yeah.

[00:43:00] I mean,

[00:43:01] I guess they must make music.

[00:43:03] Um,

[00:43:04] what would people do?

[00:43:05] Lo-fi.

[00:43:06] I mean,

[00:43:06] I guess they must have like wooden toys.

[00:43:08] Yeah.

[00:43:09] The wooden toys.

[00:43:09] There's probably some kind of sports.

[00:43:13] Right.

[00:43:13] Well,

[00:43:13] we saw it.

[00:43:14] We've seen like the race to the top and stuff.

[00:43:16] Yeah.

[00:43:16] And I would think like,

[00:43:16] I think like you probably have something like squash,

[00:43:19] you know,

[00:43:19] when you're hitting things up against the wall and it's bouncing back.

[00:43:23] Right.

[00:43:24] Stuff like that.

[00:43:25] Yeah.

[00:43:25] Yeah.

[00:43:26] Yeah.

[00:43:27] I bet.

[00:43:28] Oh,

[00:43:28] there must be a squash court somewhere.

[00:43:29] That would be a good one.

[00:43:30] Yeah.

[00:43:31] People out,

[00:43:31] you know?

[00:43:32] Yeah.

[00:43:32] Yeah.

[00:43:34] Hmm.

[00:43:34] Probably boxing and combat.

[00:43:36] Yeah.

[00:43:37] Yeah.

[00:43:39] Uh,

[00:43:39] Sub-Zero continues about episode two.

[00:43:41] In general,

[00:43:42] a great episode that lays the groundwork for the season.

[00:43:44] The growing rebellion in the down deep reminds me of the tailies from

[00:43:47] snow piercer.

[00:43:48] You really want to root for the down deepers because they are laying it on

[00:43:52] thick with the Bernard slash judicial or evil vibes.

[00:43:55] However,

[00:43:55] we also saw what happened to silo 17 when the rebellion succeeded.

[00:43:59] So as a viewer and non book reader,

[00:44:01] I'm conflict.

[00:44:02] I'm conflicted as to what outcomes I should be rooting for.

[00:44:05] They're keeping the mystery alive.

[00:44:07] Even with all the revelations and that's good storytelling,

[00:44:10] but if they do another episode without Rebecca Ferguson,

[00:44:13] I'm going to riot laughing emoji.

[00:44:16] Um,

[00:44:17] yeah,

[00:44:18] I mean the laying it on thick parts,

[00:44:20] I think that's maybe where you and I are chafing a bit about,

[00:44:24] you know,

[00:44:24] what we talked about the previous discussion about the pinning it on

[00:44:28] mechanical,

[00:44:29] but it's just a little bit on the nose,

[00:44:32] but I do,

[00:44:33] it is.

[00:44:33] Yeah.

[00:44:34] It is very interesting.

[00:44:35] And,

[00:44:36] and,

[00:44:36] uh,

[00:44:37] and from the books,

[00:44:37] by the way,

[00:44:38] just this question of like,

[00:44:40] they are the brilliant villains.

[00:44:42] Sims snored,

[00:44:43] you know,

[00:44:43] we,

[00:44:43] we keep calling them the bad guys.

[00:44:45] Um,

[00:44:46] but at the same time,

[00:44:47] as we see in silo 17,

[00:44:50] they are doing it for a reason and they are legitimately Bernard,

[00:44:54] at least new,

[00:44:56] who knows Sims motivations other than,

[00:44:58] uh,

[00:44:58] getting a promotion.

[00:44:59] But Bernard,

[00:45:00] um,

[00:45:02] does legitimately think this is what will,

[00:45:06] uh,

[00:45:07] lead to the long-term survival of the silo.

[00:45:09] And cause he knows what can happen.

[00:45:11] Yeah.

[00:45:13] So after,

[00:45:14] uh,

[00:45:15] episode three,

[00:45:15] sub zero says Meadows is definitely on her own team.

[00:45:18] She's with Bernard for her own benefit.

[00:45:21] I thought for a minute that they were going to be a dynamic duo,

[00:45:24] but now I'm not sure the partnership is going to last very long.

[00:45:27] Uh,

[00:45:28] and there's a childlike quality to solo.

[00:45:31] That's both disconcerting and heartwarming at the same time.

[00:45:34] He's deeply guarded,

[00:45:35] but also craves companionship.

[00:45:37] Steve's on killing it.

[00:45:39] And there are way safer places to sit than on a makeshift bridge,

[00:45:43] hanging out over a chasm with no guardrails.

[00:45:48] I think we're finding out who in our audience has got claustrophobia,

[00:45:52] has got,

[00:45:52] uh,

[00:45:53] acrophobia.

[00:45:54] Yeah.

[00:45:55] Acrophobia.

[00:45:56] Yeah.

[00:45:56] Yeah.

[00:45:57] Acrophobia.

[00:45:57] Acrophobia.

[00:45:59] Um,

[00:46:00] okay.

[00:46:00] Rebecca fan says after episode two,

[00:46:02] I enjoyed the second episode quite a lot.

[00:46:04] Tim Robbins and Harriet Walter were the MVPs for me.

[00:46:07] I wonder if Bernard knows he is a bad public speaker.

[00:46:11] LOL.

[00:46:12] Well,

[00:46:12] I did miss Juliet.

[00:46:13] I love how she haunted the episode.

[00:46:15] Yeah.

[00:46:16] Well put.

[00:46:16] She still,

[00:46:17] even though she wasn't in that episode,

[00:46:19] she hung over it for sure.

[00:46:21] I thought Bernard,

[00:46:22] I,

[00:46:23] everyone always says Bernard's a bad speaker,

[00:46:24] but I didn't think his speech at the,

[00:46:26] um,

[00:46:26] at the funeral last season was bad either,

[00:46:28] but I guess this shows I'm an awkward person.

[00:46:31] So.

[00:46:31] Yeah.

[00:46:31] And actually I thought that the speech at the funeral was pretty awkward.

[00:46:36] I thought this one,

[00:46:37] the,

[00:46:37] this one was actually quite effective.

[00:46:39] Hmm.

[00:46:40] And like where he was talking to Meadows later on about sort of running it,

[00:46:46] treating it as a series of calculations.

[00:46:48] And I love the,

[00:46:49] I love the fake hecklers.

[00:46:51] That is such a,

[00:46:53] um,

[00:46:54] that is such a power move to,

[00:46:56] uh,

[00:46:57] to know,

[00:46:57] you know,

[00:46:58] to have,

[00:46:59] to hire your own hecklers.

[00:47:00] Right.

[00:47:01] Yeah.

[00:47:03] Yeah.

[00:47:03] It shows confidence.

[00:47:04] Like,

[00:47:04] yeah,

[00:47:05] you can have people say the things,

[00:47:07] the worst things people are thinking.

[00:47:08] Cause I know I could,

[00:47:09] yeah,

[00:47:10] I know.

[00:47:10] I know I've got an answer.

[00:47:12] Yeah.

[00:47:12] Mm hmm.

[00:47:13] Mm hmm.

[00:47:14] And after episode three,

[00:47:16] Rebecca fan says,

[00:47:17] I love Juliet and solo.

[00:47:18] Let them be the rest of the show.

[00:47:20] Laughing emoji.

[00:47:21] I,

[00:47:22] I love Juliet and solo,

[00:47:23] but I have to say personally,

[00:47:25] I'm even more intrigued in what's going on in 18.

[00:47:28] I guess it's because there's more pieces moving over there.

[00:47:31] Yeah.

[00:47:31] I think so.

[00:47:32] I love 18 is the,

[00:47:34] it's kind of the heart of the show.

[00:47:36] Although I mean,

[00:47:37] the heart of the show is also Juliet.

[00:47:40] Yeah.

[00:47:41] Yeah.

[00:47:41] Yeah.

[00:47:42] Skeptical face from Luke.

[00:47:43] Yeah.

[00:47:43] Skeptical face.

[00:47:44] Okay.

[00:47:45] Okay.

[00:47:46] Well,

[00:47:46] I mean,

[00:47:47] I think,

[00:47:47] yeah,

[00:47:47] this just goes to show you that this really is an ensemble show.

[00:47:52] Yes.

[00:47:52] As much as Rebecca Ferguson is clearly number one on the call sheet.

[00:47:56] Yes.

[00:47:58] Um,

[00:47:59] so two kids,

[00:48:00] two dogs,

[00:48:01] AKA Nancy says after episode two,

[00:48:03] disappointed with this episode because of the Meadows plot line.

[00:48:07] What is going on?

[00:48:08] Were they lovers who had a fallout?

[00:48:10] Why this now?

[00:48:11] Why speak in so many riddles?

[00:48:13] Just say what you mean.

[00:48:15] 25 years of drinking every day.

[00:48:17] Somebody check her liver.

[00:48:18] Really miss Juliet.

[00:48:21] Um,

[00:48:22] and after episode three,

[00:48:24] great episode.

[00:48:25] So glad,

[00:48:25] glad that improved for you,

[00:48:26] Nancy,

[00:48:27] uh,

[00:48:28] love the scenes with Julia and solo the most.

[00:48:31] I'm listening to the pod and had to stop to make a comment about the Pez

[00:48:34] dispenser,

[00:48:35] but Nard does know what it is.

[00:48:37] And season one,

[00:48:38] he looks it up in a book.

[00:48:39] And I just want to point out that this Nancy may not be what you're thinking of

[00:48:45] the book.

[00:48:46] He looks it up in.

[00:48:47] Um,

[00:48:47] so the book that he looked it up in last season is it was a book that was

[00:48:54] created by the people who live in the silo over time where they documented all

[00:48:58] of the relics that they basically took back into custody.

[00:49:03] Uh,

[00:49:03] so this is not like,

[00:49:06] like it's,

[00:49:07] I,

[00:49:07] it's not a book that would come from before the before times,

[00:49:12] you know,

[00:49:13] and we also see that it's handwritten and things like that.

[00:49:15] So I think Bernard in that case,

[00:49:18] he was not looking up what the Pez dispenser does,

[00:49:21] but rather he was looking up the chain of ownership.

[00:49:24] And that was how he figured out that George was the last one to be documented

[00:49:29] having it and trace that to Juliet.

[00:49:31] Yeah.

[00:49:34] Uh,

[00:49:34] the TCS says after episode three,

[00:49:37] and it's all after episode three from here on out.

[00:49:40] Um,

[00:49:41] it seems like judge Meadows is way smarter than Bernard,

[00:49:43] almost in three steps ahead kind of way.

[00:49:47] And her ability to look past the order is seemingly unique.

[00:49:50] I love her so much at this point.

[00:49:52] And yes,

[00:49:53] I agree.

[00:49:55] Wise.

[00:49:55] As we said,

[00:49:56] wise.

[00:49:57] And yes,

[00:49:58] don't just read instructions from a book.

[00:49:59] Think about them.

[00:50:03] Sherry says the Jane Carmody cleaning video on the hard drive was from 200 years ago.

[00:50:08] That really surprised me.

[00:50:09] So yeah,

[00:50:10] good catch Sherry.

[00:50:10] We didn't mention that in our,

[00:50:13] uh,

[00:50:13] breakdown,

[00:50:14] but,

[00:50:15] um,

[00:50:16] but indeed,

[00:50:16] yeah,

[00:50:16] Bernard kind of has a throwaway mention.

[00:50:18] He's,

[00:50:19] he says some,

[00:50:20] uh,

[00:50:21] Mary asks him what was on the hard drive that he destroyed.

[00:50:23] And he said,

[00:50:24] some 200 year old cleaning video beyond that.

[00:50:27] I don't know.

[00:50:28] And yes,

[00:50:29] we know the rebellion happened 140 years ago and we knew that this was from before the rebellion.

[00:50:35] So apparently it was from 60 years before the rebellion.

[00:50:40] Yeah.

[00:50:41] Unless he was just saying a number.

[00:50:45] Yeah.

[00:50:45] I mean,

[00:50:45] maybe it's like the,

[00:50:47] um,

[00:50:48] the thing in like ancient Greek history where they,

[00:50:51] where they say 10,000,

[00:50:52] where really that just is a stand in for a lot.

[00:50:56] Right.

[00:50:56] Right.

[00:50:57] Yeah.

[00:50:57] Yeah.

[00:50:58] Could go other way,

[00:50:59] but I mean,

[00:50:59] we know it's at least 140 years because he said the hard drive is from before the rebellion.

[00:51:03] Rebellion.

[00:51:04] Yeah.

[00:51:05] Paul Kent says in the Bernard slash Meadows scene and the high tech looking room,

[00:51:10] which incidentally looks like a Damien Hirst installation.

[00:51:13] It does a little bit.

[00:51:15] Yeah.

[00:51:15] I half anticipated a mystery voice to suddenly emerge from the video screen.

[00:51:19] Like how from 2001 space odyssey.

[00:51:23] Yeah.

[00:51:24] I can imagine that.

[00:51:25] I'm sorry,

[00:51:27] Bernard.

[00:51:27] I can't do that.

[00:51:29] Yeah,

[00:51:29] exactly.

[00:51:30] Oh,

[00:51:30] how creepy would that make it?

[00:51:34] Oh,

[00:51:35] but you can imagine also of like the head of it is so lonely because like he can't really

[00:51:40] talk to anyone about this stuff he knows.

[00:51:44] Yeah.

[00:51:44] No,

[00:51:44] it's gotta be very wearing.

[00:51:46] Yeah.

[00:51:47] You would just have this like AI companion.

[00:51:50] And so Paul continues.

[00:51:52] Meadows has this 25 year secret that I'm dying to find out.

[00:51:56] So there are more twists to come.

[00:51:58] Maybe we'll get a Meadows flashback.

[00:52:00] Shirley's mom.

[00:52:01] Who knows?

[00:52:02] Could Bernard and Meadows have had a child years ago,

[00:52:05] but he doesn't know.

[00:52:06] I mean,

[00:52:07] he thought she had birth control in,

[00:52:09] but didn't.

[00:52:10] And Maureen D says it would be ironic if Shirley was his daughter.

[00:52:13] What do you think?

[00:52:15] I've just got like,

[00:52:16] uh,

[00:52:17] you know,

[00:52:17] like the,

[00:52:18] uh,

[00:52:18] the scene in,

[00:52:19] um,

[00:52:19] Empire Strikes Back now with Bernard and Shirley.

[00:52:23] No,

[00:52:24] I am your first daughter.

[00:52:26] Oh,

[00:52:30] um,

[00:52:31] I mean,

[00:52:32] that seems like a stretch theory to me,

[00:52:34] but I like it.

[00:52:35] Keep them coming.

[00:52:36] I definitely,

[00:52:37] yeah,

[00:52:37] it is a bit of a stretch,

[00:52:38] but I like it.

[00:52:39] I wanted to.

[00:52:42] Uh,

[00:52:42] Chumba Rooney says,

[00:52:44] I'm thinking after Bernard lets Meadows go out,

[00:52:47] he's going to secretly give her the shitty tape or put a secret hole in her

[00:52:51] suit or something so that when she goes out,

[00:52:53] she will die so that he can try to put the idea that it's not going to be

[00:52:56] nice outside out of people's heads.

[00:52:58] I don't trust Bernard to do what he promised.

[00:53:01] He's always trying to spin everything.

[00:53:03] What's he going to tell the silo when Meadows is suddenly missing?

[00:53:07] He's got to have something up his sleeve.

[00:53:10] Yeah,

[00:53:11] we can't really talk about that.

[00:53:14] Yeah.

[00:53:15] I mean,

[00:53:16] don't trust Bernard seems like a way to go.

[00:53:19] Yeah.

[00:53:20] Um,

[00:53:21] we can't really say anything.

[00:53:23] Hmm.

[00:53:24] But David Mack says,

[00:53:25] I don't trust Bernard at all,

[00:53:26] but I also get the sense that if he's going to do right by anyone,

[00:53:30] it would be Meadows.

[00:53:31] I really like what they've done with Bernard and the show as a character.

[00:53:35] And sub zero ends by saying,

[00:53:37] I think Bernard and Meadows trust each other as much as it is possible for them

[00:53:41] to trust anyone,

[00:53:42] not saying they won't betray each other,

[00:53:44] but it would only be for what they consider,

[00:53:47] consider to be an absolute necessity.

[00:53:49] And yeah,

[00:53:51] I think,

[00:53:51] I mean,

[00:53:51] I,

[00:53:52] that's the vibe I get to,

[00:53:53] I think that's fair to say,

[00:53:54] like it's,

[00:53:56] you know,

[00:53:56] it's much like,

[00:53:57] I don't think either of them trusts a single soul on this planet,

[00:54:00] but,

[00:54:01] um,

[00:54:02] they have more of a connection with each other than anyone else for what

[00:54:05] it's worth.

[00:54:08] If only for the,

[00:54:09] if only for the fact that they both know things and nobody else knows.

[00:54:14] Right.

[00:54:15] But there seems to be more connection than that.

[00:54:18] Like,

[00:54:18] let's,

[00:54:18] uh,

[00:54:19] look back at the suit measuring scene.

[00:54:23] That's hot.

[00:54:28] It really felt like an excuse just to get close to her,

[00:54:31] but yeah,

[00:54:32] but I don't trust him as far as I can throw him and I can't throw him at all

[00:54:34] because Tim Robbins is like twice my size.

[00:54:38] You're like nine feet tall.

[00:54:40] Yeah.

[00:54:43] So,

[00:54:44] okay.

[00:54:44] That was final thoughts.

[00:54:46] I think we'll avoid adding too many final thoughts of our own since as we

[00:54:49] said,

[00:54:49] we watched a couple episodes ahead,

[00:54:50] but just suffice it to say,

[00:54:52] I think you're all asking the right questions.

[00:54:55] And,

[00:54:55] uh,

[00:54:56] of course not all the questions are answered in the next two episodes

[00:54:58] either.

[00:54:59] Um,

[00:55:00] anything you want to add?

[00:55:02] Only the,

[00:55:03] only the,

[00:55:04] I'm,

[00:55:04] I'm always very grateful for all the time people take to,

[00:55:08] to write to us.

[00:55:10] So thank you for everybody,

[00:55:12] whether we read your comments out or not.

[00:55:15] Um,

[00:55:15] thanks for taking the time.

[00:55:17] Very much appreciated.

[00:55:19] Yes.

[00:55:20] Yes.

[00:55:20] And yes,

[00:55:20] I'm sorry if I missed your feedback.

[00:55:23] Uh,

[00:55:23] there's been quite the discussion going on on discord and other media.

[00:55:27] So I hope you all jump in.

[00:55:28] If you want to make sure I don't miss sharing your thoughts,

[00:55:32] then please email them to we'll shift us podcast at gmail.com.

[00:55:36] And you'll find that link in the show notes.

[00:55:38] Voicemails are also welcome or encouraged.

[00:55:41] And yeah,

[00:55:42] we'll be getting started.

[00:55:43] I'm already starting to gather up for the next feedback round up.

[00:55:46] So,

[00:55:47] uh,

[00:55:47] in the meantime,

[00:55:48] please do also come chat with us on blue sky and discord.

[00:55:51] And you'll find those links in the show notes too.

[00:55:53] And,

[00:55:53] uh,

[00:55:54] check out my spoiler cast discussion with Abby for this week in the book club.

[00:55:57] The topic this week is solo's backstory,

[00:56:00] and that's available to all subscribers and season pass holders.

[00:56:04] I'd like to extend a warm welcome to the new silence and stories.

[00:56:08] And I will shout out the newest members by name during the regular weekly

[00:56:12] breakdowns,

[00:56:13] which again,

[00:56:14] Luke and I are recording a couple of weeks ahead of time.

[00:56:16] So,

[00:56:17] uh,

[00:56:17] if your name,

[00:56:18] it takes a couple of weeks to call out your name,

[00:56:20] then you know why.

[00:56:21] Um,

[00:56:22] and if you are not interested in the full subscription package,

[00:56:26] which includes of course those spoiler casts,

[00:56:28] but also our seasonal episodes,

[00:56:30] like we've got one coming up,

[00:56:32] breaking down a Christmas Carol from Charles Dickens,

[00:56:35] the novella plus including an audio drama from in a short story he wrote

[00:56:39] before that,

[00:56:40] that seems to have been sort of a practice round for Christmas Carol.

[00:56:44] Um,

[00:56:45] and then of course,

[00:56:46] future Dune episodes that subscribers have access to all of that.

[00:56:50] As long as they're subscribed,

[00:56:51] if you're only interested in the silo stuff,

[00:56:55] there are season pass options where you just pay a low one-time fee just for

[00:57:00] access to the first season plus the books or the second season spoiler casts

[00:57:04] or a reduced price for the combination thereof.

[00:57:07] And you'll find all those links in the show notes as well so that you can

[00:57:11] explore those options and see if any of that is for you.

[00:57:15] Um,

[00:57:15] of course you don't have to pay to listen to this.

[00:57:18] Um,

[00:57:19] if you enjoyed this listen and feel like you got something out of it,

[00:57:22] you can help us without spending a dime.

[00:57:26] Uh,

[00:57:26] just share this episode with other people you think might be interested and

[00:57:29] leave us a positive review wherever you're listening.

[00:57:31] It really helps more people find the podcast and do also check out the rest of

[00:57:36] the network.

[00:57:37] there's weekly Dune prophecy breakdowns on the lore hounds feed,

[00:57:41] which I'm taking part of.

[00:57:42] And Luke,

[00:57:43] how are you feeling about at the point we're recording?

[00:57:46] We've now seen two episodes of doom prophecy.

[00:57:49] How do you feel?

[00:57:50] I've only seen the first episode.

[00:57:51] Oh,

[00:57:51] okay.

[00:57:52] With a second one.

[00:57:53] Okay.

[00:57:53] So we already got your thoughts on that.

[00:57:55] Okay.

[00:57:57] Um,

[00:57:58] and also we have a skeleton crew is about to start as we're recording and

[00:58:03] John's going to be leading some coverage of that on the lore hounds feed as

[00:58:07] well.

[00:58:08] Um,

[00:58:08] I'm definitely going to throw in some thoughts,

[00:58:10] but you know,

[00:58:10] it's been,

[00:58:11] it's quite busy right now.

[00:58:12] So I skeleton crews,

[00:58:14] definitely one of the shows I've been most excited about coming out.

[00:58:18] So I'm definitely going to be sending in thoughts for every episode they do.

[00:58:21] I think it's going to be mostly John and Marilyn though.

[00:58:25] Okay.

[00:58:25] And lots of other stuff happening on the lore hounds feed as always do also

[00:58:30] check out the rest of the,

[00:58:32] um,

[00:58:32] the rest of the feeds in the network properly.

[00:58:35] Howard just started there.

[00:58:36] A few good movies season with all movies with star,

[00:58:41] the feature stars of a few good men.

[00:58:43] There's also,

[00:58:44] of course my own,

[00:58:45] the star Wars Canon timeline project,

[00:58:47] uh,

[00:58:47] podcast,

[00:58:47] which is a project telling all of star Wars in timeline order.

[00:58:51] And,

[00:58:52] uh,

[00:58:52] we've got radioactive ramblings.

[00:58:54] They're covering arcane.

[00:58:55] They're covering Ghibli.

[00:58:56] They're covering,

[00:58:56] covering the red rising books and nevermind the music where music theory.

[00:59:02] I know I'm not supposed to call that Mark.

[00:59:04] Sorry.

[00:59:04] Uh,

[00:59:05] music composition meets psychology.

[00:59:08] And of course,

[00:59:09] Luke,

[00:59:10] your own,

[00:59:10] it could be said we've got Paul Kent's listening.

[00:59:13] Yeah.

[00:59:13] So thanks for that,

[00:59:14] Paul.

[00:59:15] Um,

[00:59:16] I'm,

[00:59:16] I'm really busy,

[00:59:17] uh,

[00:59:18] marking papers at the moment.

[00:59:20] And my car,

[00:59:21] this stuff.

[00:59:22] Yeah.

[00:59:23] I'm doing this stuff.

[00:59:24] Um,

[00:59:24] my co-host Simon Alvey,

[00:59:25] uh,

[00:59:26] works in public relations.

[00:59:28] So this is his busiest time of the year,

[00:59:30] but we were talking the other day and we are going to try and record something relatively soon.

[00:59:36] Cause we've got a lot of stuff,

[00:59:38] um,

[00:59:39] happening at the moment in UK politics.

[00:59:41] So we really feel like we need to weigh in.

[00:59:43] So watch this space.

[00:59:45] Yeah.

[00:59:46] Okay.

[00:59:47] Any final thoughts before we sign out?

[00:59:50] No,

[00:59:51] just thanks again to everybody for the feedback.

[00:59:53] Okay,

[00:59:54] great.

[00:59:54] Well,

[00:59:55] we'll be back in your ears for our episode four breakdown on Friday.

[00:59:59] And we promise we'll bring your suit with the good tape.

[01:00:03] And let's get one second break.

[01:00:03] let's get one second break.

[01:00:03] Okay.imerkрезりますCD

[01:00:03] and RPMs, we'll move okay.

[01:00:03] will be finished after the last break. My foot, we'll

[01:00:03] page. Yes, after the long
