[00:00:00] A new Star Wars journey begins in the place all good journeys begin. At, well, the beginning.

[00:00:06] This Star Wars day I'm excited to introduce the new Star Wars Canon Timeline podcast where we will

[00:00:12] piece together the complete story of that galaxy far far away in timeline order from the dawn of

[00:00:18] the Jedi through the great unknown following the sequel trilogy. This is a podcast for both

[00:00:23] Star Wars super fans and complete newbies. Listen to the short intro episode now to hear how it works

[00:00:30] and what to expect over the coming weeks as we set the stage for the new television series,

[00:00:34] The Acolyte which we will be covering with weekly breakdowns. Subscribe to the Star Wars

[00:00:39] Canon Timeline podcast wherever you listen to take part in one of the most epic and

[00:00:44] expansive stories ever told following all the twists and turns from start to finish.

[00:00:49] May the fourth be with you all all month and beyond.

[00:00:57] Hello Wool-Shift Dust Fam, apologies for the long silence. For those of you who do not follow me on

[00:01:03] social media or haven't reached out via email, you deserve an update on what has been going on

[00:01:09] in my end and the plans for this podcast this spring. Basically I've had a rather rough start

[00:01:14] to the year most recently with a broken leg and that nasty neurovirus it's been going around

[00:01:19] but the injury most directly related to my ability to produce this podcast is the oral

[00:01:24] as in ear injuries I sustained on a flight in December. Essentially both of my eardrums burst

[00:01:31] severely affecting my hearing for a time and making audio editing almost impossible.

[00:01:35] Just a few notes on this by the way so first of all thank you to those of you who reached out

[00:01:40] to check in and express your support you don't know how deeply I appreciate that

[00:01:45] and just for anyone who's nervous about flying I want to assure you that I have taken

[00:01:49] hundreds of flights in my life and this is the first time anything like this has happened

[00:01:53] to me. It's directly related to some ongoing complications I have had from my experiences

[00:01:59] with long COVID however I've been grateful to be able to speak to a number of people who have

[00:02:04] also experiences which has helped me set my expectations for a slow gradual healing process

[00:02:09] but one that will most likely end with a full recovery and of course I have my doctor monitoring

[00:02:15] the situation in regular checkups too. In case anyone else finds themselves in a similar

[00:02:20] situation experiencing unbearable pain in their ears during landing I want to share this tip that

[00:02:25] listener Rick M shared with me just in case it ever helps anyone else in the future. He says

[00:02:31] regarding your airplane related hearing loss I can definitely relate I will never forget a flight

[00:02:37] I was on overseas where I had some kind of ear infection and as we were making our slow descent

[00:02:42] I felt the absolute worst ear pain I've ever experienced because of increasing air pressure.

[00:02:46] It was so bad my wife called the flight attendant over to help me and she did something really

[00:02:51] interesting. She brought over two plastic drink cups and she placed a hot washcloth into each cup

[00:02:56] and told me to hold it over my ears as we descended. It sounded weird and I'm sure I looked

[00:03:01] ridiculous but somehow the hot air in the cups helped control the pain and unfortunately I

[00:03:06] didn't suffer any hearing loss so yeah I'm definitely going to be remembering that tip

[00:03:09] in the future thank you Rick. Anyway it's time to retrain my ears to process sound normally which

[00:03:16] is an odd uncomfortable process and I don't have my full range and miss especially quieter midtones

[00:03:22] but getting back in the audio editing chair is definitely helping that along so obviously

[00:03:28] first and foremost I owe you all the wrap up to season one of beacon 23 which was recorded

[00:03:33] in December before my injuries and will be the next thing released in this feed

[00:03:37] and then the promised dune series beginning with a book and working through the adaptations as planned

[00:03:42] I just saw part two today and I'm really glad I've watched this before doing this series now

[00:03:47] I think it will change how I look at the prior adaptations especially part one

[00:03:51] and maybe even the books a little so I'm excited to get into that and make sure you're getting

[00:03:56] the most out of the new film and you go into part three and experts and are fully prepped

[00:04:01] for the new series dune prophecy expected to release on HBO this summer in the meantime

[00:04:06] I hope you'll enjoy the Oscars prep series we're currently releasing in the lower hounds feed

[00:04:11] in advance of the Oscar ceremony this Sunday March 10th much thanks to David for doing the editing

[00:04:17] on that basically this series is a chance for me to let my inner film fiend loose as we break

[00:04:23] down everything you need to know for the Oscars in three parts so stay tuned here to this

[00:04:28] episode for 15 minute teaser David and I put together to preview what to expect from the

[00:04:32] series and this is of course also an excellent time to catch up on older episodes in this feed

[00:04:38] including my Halloween coverage of Mike Planagans the fall of the house of usher on Netflix

[00:04:43] friend of the pod stew caught up on this series recently and this is what he had to say

[00:04:48] hi alicia watched the final episodes of the fall of the house of usher last night

[00:04:52] few what a great little mini series wonderful to see some modern gothic horror given the

[00:04:57] treatment it deserves great performances all around especially the kids so brilliantly

[00:05:02] awful that even though they meet grizzly ends you still have a little spark of sympathy for them

[00:05:07] especially when you realize the truly awful deal that daddy usher made gory but not overly so and

[00:05:14] the way the words and stories of poe were seamlessly weaved into the narrative was effortless

[00:05:19] always nice to see little Easter eggs along the way as well I've always been a horror buff

[00:05:23] but nothing for a long time has held my attention like this show did and I'm looking forward

[00:05:27] to seeing what Mike plan again has up its sleeve next so yeah I also really love this series you

[00:05:33] can hear all about it if you scroll back to Halloween and learn all about the poe Easter eggs buried

[00:05:39] in it but for now that's enough explanation and preamble I think did somebody say awards season

[00:05:47] please enjoy the preview episode here and then you will find the rest of the series

[00:05:52] on the Lorhounds feed episode one has already been released and episode two will be released in the

[00:05:57] morning hey there David here and Alicia you've probably noticed that this episode has a really

[00:06:03] short runtime well short for us anyway that's because it's just a teaser the Oscars are coming

[00:06:09] up and we're going to be releasing a three part prep series to help you get ready without spoiling

[00:06:15] any of the movies so we're just popping up here quickly to give you a heads up on what

[00:06:19] to expect from that the Oscars are coming up March 10th at 7 p.m. Eastern I'm guessing or is that

[00:06:25] is that going to be Pacific Eastern yeah Eastern okay broadcast by ABC in the United States and

[00:06:31] other channels around the world but if you go to the Oscars.org website you should be able to

[00:06:36] you know figure out where to watch them so what do we need to know about this three part series

[00:06:41] that you've cooked up for us the idea behind the entire series is that we're going to help you

[00:06:45] figure out what are the most interesting movies that you can watch at home to prep if however

[00:06:51] whatever your level of interest and maybe that's the most nominated ones we'll break that down for you

[00:06:56] or just whatever sounds like the most fun for you again we're going to tell you all of the

[00:07:00] behind the scenes stuff to get in on the water cooler conversations for award season and

[00:07:05] to make a respectable showing in any Oscar pools if you go in for that kind of thing

[00:07:11] you're a you're part of this group called the association of yeah this academy of death racers

[00:07:17] that's what it is yeah what is that about so death racers are people who watch all of the movies

[00:07:24] every Oscar season so um so that's 53 movies this year and yes I've watched them all wow um in fact

[00:07:31] yeah a bunch of us go even further and like I've watched also all of the BAFTA nominated movies

[00:07:35] all of the uh spirits nominated movies goodness where do folks find the uh death racer website

[00:07:44] there's two different websites if you yourself want to track your Oscar watching progress then

[00:07:50] you can find there's two websites there's the Oscars death race uh websites which I know was

[00:07:55] your preferred one right David I think it was just to share it with somebody else yeah it was

[00:08:01] really simple to see what was going on simple visual interface and if you want to and if you

[00:08:06] want all the statistics and are going above and beyond then there's deathrace tracking.com

[00:08:10] okay but if you want to just know more about the academy of death racers that's aodr.net

[00:08:17] and there's also a very active subreddit active especially this time of year and a discord

[00:08:23] so okay cool it maybe you can forward me those links and I'll put them in the show notes

[00:08:28] if people want to follow up on those okay great yeah cool all right so part one the headliner awards

[00:08:34] talk to me about what our first podcast is going to cover and how we're gonna work through all of this

[00:08:40] you know it's a it's a lot of movies it's a lot of movies 53 yeah so we're going to start with

[00:08:46] of course the best picture 10 because these are the movies that are nominated for most of the awards

[00:08:51] so we're just going to lay the groundwork we're going to talk about them in the order of the

[00:08:55] number of nominations that they have got it and then we're also going to touch on in that episode

[00:09:00] the other you know so-called above-the-line categories like directing acting and writing

[00:09:07] okay yeah we'll make sure that you're up on the favorites to win and you know what the

[00:09:12] category controversies are in the most popular awards cool and then to make it a little bit

[00:09:16] more interesting since I personally have not seen all of the the above-the-line nominations

[00:09:22] we have decided to chat with a few people from the community and some other folks that we know to

[00:09:32] share some voices and thoughts from you know from the wider community I know that your

[00:09:37] father is going to be talking about Killers of the Flower Moon that's very cool you want to set

[00:09:42] that up a little bit uh yeah so I've already recorded an interview with my father about

[00:09:47] he's so he lives in Oklahoma and you know his grandfather um my great grandfather was part of

[00:09:54] you know he got one of these oil allotments wow okay and my father's very into the history

[00:10:00] he's read the book multiple times he's watched the movie now multiple times and uh he had a lot

[00:10:05] to say he actually prefers the book sorry the movie to the book wow that's really interesting

[00:10:10] very cool that'll be a cool interview and I know we're going to talk to Marilyn about Barbie

[00:10:14] she was an OG collector of the uh the Barbies way back when so I'm sure yeah I can't wait to hear what

[00:10:20] she thinks of the movie absolutely and then we've got a few other community members that we've

[00:10:24] reached out to on our discord uh folks who have expressed opinions or thoughts about movies um

[00:10:31] you know where they've really shared something that was important to them or they had a really

[00:10:35] cool insight so yeah really excited to hear some more voices from the wider Lorhounds

[00:10:41] listening community okay so part two the hidden gems what's this get what's this podcast gonna be

[00:10:49] about so yeah these are these are kind of my favorite categories every year because these

[00:10:53] are the movies that I probably wouldn't otherwise watch well one of the categories is animation

[00:10:58] of course I would watch those but the other categories are international documentary and

[00:11:02] short films okay these are yeah movies that you'd probably miss and for me they're windows

[00:11:08] into other worlds so we're gonna give you the spoiler free tips on what's been nominated uh where

[00:11:14] to find it and you know anything that sparks your interest you can you can have a horse in the

[00:11:20] race when it comes to oscar day okay sounds good and we've got some more um outside interviews as

[00:11:25] well you've reached out to some of the folks that you're friends with in the death racer

[00:11:30] community and and other professional and personal contacts so we're going to get some

[00:11:34] wider even wider perspective on those absolutely yeah great in part three the blockbusters aka the

[00:11:41] technical awards those are blockbusters so the technical awards are the they're also called the

[00:11:47] below the line awards and they're the ones that are dominated when they push those off on the other

[00:11:51] night right then a whole other award ceremony for those or well no no they they would if and

[00:11:57] if they were to jettison any awards they would be these but but these are these are the biggest

[00:12:01] these are the headliners of the technical of the tech god and okay but i mean calling them the

[00:12:06] technical awards may not make it sound that appealing to a lot of people but these are basically

[00:12:10] first of all it's going to be all of the best picture nominees and right the biggest movies

[00:12:15] that most of you have probably watched this year you know like uh napoleon and the creator

[00:12:19] movies we've covered even um and these are the awards that are actually rewarding people for

[00:12:27] making movies look and sound the way they look and sound so these are people who make movies good

[00:12:31] yeah so we've got cinematography visual effects production design editing sound and music uh so

[00:12:37] yeah we're going to i know genre's gonna talk uh be joining us to talk to you and then uh we're

[00:12:42] gonna have some yeah again some other members of from the community and beyond with some insight

[00:12:47] into the different categories jedi jedi bob is prepping to talk to us about sound yeah great

[00:12:53] yeah that'll that'll be nice and again we're still pulling together all of those people

[00:12:58] and getting those files sorted out and that kind of stuff so we don't want to say too much because

[00:13:02] we couldn't get things sort of lined up a little bit right okay so i was just looking at the

[00:13:07] oscars death race website and trying to think about um the things that i have seen i've seen

[00:13:13] i just saw american fiction loved it so good i've seen barbie i've seen half of killers

[00:13:20] of the flower moon i've seen maestro um i really want to watch oppenheimer and i'm not sure that i'm

[00:13:27] gonna be able to fit in past lives poor things the holdovers are our zone of interest so but i i'm

[00:13:33] here who is it somebody was just on the discord saying that they saw zone of interest in

[00:13:37] was that adrian i think yeah there's adrian yeah yeah who and saying how powerful it was

[00:13:43] and how usually incredible it is it is very powerful and actually it's coming out on video

[00:13:48] on demand on the 20th okay well there you go that's good yeah and poor things is coming out on

[00:13:54] video on demand on the 27th so those are the last two big ones that were a little bit more difficult

[00:13:59] to watch and now they're gonna be a little easier to watch at home and i just have to always plug

[00:14:03] poor things is only i mean sorry uh past lives is only nominated for two oscars but it is the

[00:14:08] emotional favorite of a lot of people including myself so if you okay if uh if you want to

[00:14:14] know why everyone's gushing about this film it's hard to describe but you just i think i'm gonna

[00:14:21] have to sign up on the death race website here because it looks like it has some really cool

[00:14:25] ways to track your movies and stuff like that as well yeah exactly it would be kind of fun i wouldn't

[00:14:30] mind maybe for myself like is a personal goal i don't know that i'll be able to do it before

[00:14:34] the oscars but you know within this calendar year to see at least the 10 best picture

[00:14:40] nominations that would be kind of a fun fun goal i'm not traditionally a big oscars tracker i mean

[00:14:48] i think they're interesting and i've always had an awareness and sort of paid a little bit of

[00:14:53] attention to them but it was until you pitched this idea for these podcasts that i started to get

[00:14:58] a little bit more engaged in interest you know have my interest build in in the process a

[00:15:04] little bit and it's kind of like the super bowl for entertainment for movies right it's a it's a

[00:15:09] absolutely we call it our super bowl for sure right and you compared it to fantasy sports at one

[00:15:14] point which i mean which i see i see what you mean but there actually is if people want to take

[00:15:18] it to that level there's also you're a little late for this season but there's something called red

[00:15:22] carpet rosters where you actually do oh wow you're drafting your own team and follow them

[00:15:28] through the award season yeah that's very cool awesome what about you you are you are a i think

[00:15:33] you're a bigger film buff than i am i love film but i'm not i've never been a buff right i've

[00:15:38] never been right you know uh as into it as and i same with television i've always loved television

[00:15:44] i've watched a lot of television through my life gen X or latke kid i think that makes you a buff

[00:15:49] right yeah well but it wasn't until i started podcasting i think i've always had the i always

[00:15:54] had the desire but then podcasting has really helped me sharpen my um my thoughts and my

[00:16:00] critiques and my engagement in shows and so i just haven't had the same for films but of

[00:16:05] course we used to go to the movies we would see a dozen movies in a year easily easily oh

[00:16:11] because you know that's where you went to see really interesting stuff television was just

[00:16:16] pablum right it was just sort of the oatmeal of the uh of the cultural conversation but it

[00:16:21] was the movies that really sparked your interest and took your imagination away so what's your

[00:16:27] what's your what's your hook for oscars what is what drives alicia for the oscars stuff um

[00:16:33] i mean when i guess it comes from childhood like i used to watch the oscars with my family and you

[00:16:38] know it's even now no kind of a monocultural event thing yeah exactly and that it is less so that

[00:16:44] although i feel like this year it feels like they have nominated more widely seen movies okay and

[00:16:51] i'm seeing a broader interest in the oscars again so i hope that that because i do think it's

[00:16:57] it doesn't need to just be for people who have watched hundreds of movies in a year

[00:17:01] and a lot of these movies are are they're approachable in some ways they're American fiction was so easy

[00:17:09] to to watch and be a participant when we went we kind of did a double date with some friends of

[00:17:14] ours we left our kids alone to take care of themselves and we went out for you know an adult

[00:17:19] meal and and then we even saw a movie it was really great but the theater was

[00:17:23] moving there was like a lot of people at our little local movie theater and theater was

[00:17:28] full enough that we actually had to like strategize where we were going to sit it wasn't packed because

[00:17:32] it's a huge space but you know it was it felt really good and it feels like there's a lot of

[00:17:38] conversation about oscars right now like you're saying no exactly and i think they've made maybe

[00:17:43] a more concerted it also helps that too of like i was talking to you before there's a big four

[00:17:48] films that um i would recommend that if you want to be up on the oscars with the least

[00:17:55] amount of work the four films you should target are oppenheimer poor things killers of the flower

[00:18:00] moon and barbie and i'm throwing in past lives just because i'm always throwing in past lives

[00:18:06] but these are the ones nominated for the most and you know obviously we have the whole

[00:18:10] barb and hymer phenomenon this year we know that's a lot of people have seen especially

[00:18:15] those two movies you know killers of flower moons also scorsese movie a lot of people

[00:18:19] have seen that it's just available on apple and maestro that got a big thing i know for

[00:18:24] my uh my in-laws that for them it was a very moving thing because the subject matter is their you

[00:18:30] know part of their life that was an integral part of of their growing up and you know and i'm just

[00:18:35] thinking too about this we've watched a lot of television you know through the pandemic and up

[00:18:41] to now and they're talking about you know peak tv like i think the the number of scripted shows

[00:18:46] that are coming out this year is actually markedly down a little bit from from past things so you

[00:18:51] know the whole streaming thing is is working itself out but then you know seeing barbie

[00:18:57] seeing american fiction seeing maestro it reminded me of what movies are there are

[00:19:05] different things they're they're this complete story that's packed into an hour and a half to

[00:19:11] three hours you know let's let's bring the time down the runtime right um but in and you know

[00:19:17] the the whole beginning middle and end and it just it's compelling and it's visually

[00:19:22] can be a visual feast and it's just in this really nice packaged thing and so i think right i i'm

[00:19:27] starting to fall back in love with movies a little bit right well i think i think also one of the

[00:19:33] movies for me so my two movies of the year are i've said past lives enough that's that's like

[00:19:39] tells me what film is from the the way that you can subtly represents the ineffable beauty in life

[00:19:49] and love you know this sort of intangible thing that you can only represent by showing the story

[00:19:55] of someone's life play out got it um but then on the other hand my other favorite film of the year

[00:20:01] it's poor things and that for me is just wow the encompassing everything that a movie can be you

[00:20:07] know just wild fantasy but also juggling with complex ideas about what does it mean to be

[00:20:15] an independent person and our need to control others and how do we develop ourselves nature

[00:20:20] versus nurture but you know in this technicolored fantasy yeah i'm gonna have to see that now because

[00:20:25] it got kind of mixed the yeah got mixed things but visually well the uh the i think that there's

[00:20:32] one thing that and so your your ghost lathmos he's already he's just one of my favorite directors

[00:20:37] he's also the one who did the lobster the favorite dog tooth the killing of a sacred deer and

[00:20:45] he's can be a tough swallow for especially sorry some american audiences just because he there's

[00:20:51] there's a lot of story things there's a lot of sex important things and also there's

[00:20:55] you know it brings up questionable morals because that's the point right so it's based on

[00:21:01] a book and it actually got me to go back and pick up and at least like thumb through the book and

[00:21:06] there's a website also that you can explore the book and it's you know he's taking the source

[00:21:11] material and combining it with ideas that he's examined in past movies and it's it's very it

[00:21:16] asks a lot of complex moral questions and not everyone's comfortable with that and i get it

[00:21:20] sure right yeah if for for some folks the movies are entertainment and escapism as opposed to

[00:21:26] challenge and yeah but it also has mark ruffalo being very silly in a funny way

[00:21:32] very cool great well this has been a fun conversation i guess this is kind of what you

[00:21:36] could look forward to when we get into the actual podcasts and and talking about the

[00:21:41] actual movies our plans are to get is to get uh the first one out sometime the week of the 18th

[00:21:48] and then for the next two to drop within the next two weeks before the oscars on the

[00:21:52] 10th so that you're fully briefed before the big show happens so be sure to check out our main feed
