Elysia and Luke wrap up their 2024 winter holiday miniseries on A Christmas Carol with a look at seven adaptations that offer twists on the original tale, from meta storytelling (00:04:36), to gender-swapped Scrooges (00:43:02), to trippy musicals that have landed on the favorites end of our lists (01:37:20).

[00:00:33] Hello and welcome one final time for 2024 to the Wool-Shift-Dust Winter Holiday Zone. Calling all Christmas Carol fans, bring an open mind to these adaptations because today things get a little bit weird. I'm Alicia and I'm here with Luke. And Luke we've reached our final episode of Project 2024 Christmas Carol. How do you feel?
[00:00:53] So I joked to you on Blue Sky, Alicia, that this is our Everest and we're about to reach the summit. This is the final assault.
[00:01:03] And then I just have to do all the editing, but that's okay.
[00:01:06] Yes, but the key thing is Alicia, I won't be doing that.
[00:01:12] You've reached the summit. I'm right behind you.
[00:01:14] I've reached my summit.
[00:01:17] Like enjoy the view. I'll be there. But you were saying, um, you, you watched all of these, including, we weren't sure if you're going to watch a new diva's Christmas Carol, but you're like, you know, in for penny, in for pounds.
[00:01:29] If you're going to, if you're going to, if you're going to do, if you're going to do a marathon, you've got to, you've got to complete it.
[00:01:34] You've got to finish that.
[00:01:36] Um, you were saying right before we started recording that this was a mixed bag, the films of this episode.
[00:01:44] Yes. Like I feel this is, I feel this is a, uh, this is a show where a movie version of the Sims Nard scale.
[00:01:52] Okay.
[00:01:53] The Sims Nard scale would be appropriate because it goes from the very, very good to the very, very bad.
[00:01:59] So we'll get to, I know which one you're going to put on the Sims Nard end, which in case anyone doesn't listen to our silo coverage, that's our portmanteau for the two biggest villains in the series.
[00:02:09] Um, so I know which film you would put there. We'll get to that in a minute, but which would you put on the Juliet end of the scale? The good end.
[00:02:15] Ooh, I think spirited. I enjoyed the heck out of spirited. Much more. I mean, this is the thing. I think it's also an expectations thing because I went into spirited, not really expecting to like it. I'm not the world's biggest, I'm not the world's biggest Will Ferrell fan.
[00:02:34] Mm-hmm.
[00:02:35] He said, um, I think a little Will Ferrell goes a long way.
[00:02:39] Mm-hmm.
[00:02:39] Um, but I actually enjoyed this.
[00:02:42] All right. Uh, yeah, I, I also really,
[00:02:45] really enjoyed it. So just, uh, laying out what exactly we're going to be covering in this episode and you can find, uh, you can find the list of all these in the show notes as well, but we're discussing the last seven films from this year, which is Scrooged from 1988, Flintstones Christmas Carol from 1994.
[00:03:04] It's Christmas Carol from 2012, a Divas Christmas Carol from 2000, a New Divas Christmas Carol from 2022, Scrooge, a Christmas Carol from 2022 on Netflix, and Spirited, the 2022 musical on Apple TV+.
[00:03:21] So this is seven we're covering today.
[00:03:22] You'll find links in the show notes where you can watch most of them, though you'll have to find a couple on this list yourself if you want to watch along since I can't legally share those links, but if we found them, so can you.
[00:03:31] And, um, of course, spoilers for all these films incoming, though, in most cases, you know the basic outline of the plot anyway, because it's a Christmas Carol.
[00:03:42] Although in some cases you really, really, you really don't know that much of the outline of the plot because they, they're only very loosely based on a Christmas Carol.
[00:03:52] Well, I think, yeah, in some cases there's only the loose outline of a plot to begin with.
[00:03:58] Yeah.
[00:04:01] All right.
[00:04:02] Well, we're going to go through the films in that order, and I've grouped them into little categories.
[00:04:07] We've got our meta films.
[00:04:09] We've got our gender swap Scrooge films.
[00:04:13] We've got our, and we've got our musicals here.
[00:04:17] Yeah, so we'll, we'll go through these films, give a little background, our hot takes and anything else we feel like shouting out from each.
[00:04:24] And, and we will be calling out some moments from the book and how they were translated to the screen.
[00:04:28] So any Supercaster Patreon subscribers are encouraged to start with the episode where we break down the novella there.
[00:04:36] Let's start with the meta movies.
[00:04:38] So, okay, Luke, here's where we're about to disappoint a bunch of people.
[00:04:43] Yes.
[00:04:44] Um, so the second most asked about movie that we got when we, you know, said we were doing this project.
[00:04:52] The first most asked about movie is Muppet Christmas Carol.
[00:04:54] We covered that.
[00:04:55] You heard that last or two episodes ago.
[00:04:57] Um, second most asked about movie was Scrooge from 1998 starring Bill Murray.
[00:05:03] Uh, let me just do a little background before I get into our feelings about it.
[00:05:07] So the director is Richard Donner and he had a background in TV, which I guess explains premise.
[00:05:12] Um, and he was also, but he's known for some directing some really great movies like the Omen, the 76 version, the Superman from 79, the Goonies lethal weapon.
[00:05:23] Um, so, and the writers on this though, where Mitch Glazer and Michael Donoghue, um, they were especially SNL writers Saturday night live.
[00:05:34] And so that's how they knew Bill Murray.
[00:05:36] So Bill Murray kind of trusted them more than he trusted the director is the vibe that I'm getting.
[00:05:41] Yeah.
[00:05:42] The, the, the internet research I did for this film suggested that Richard Donner and Bill Murray did not, did not get on at all.
[00:05:51] No.
[00:05:52] And it put it this way.
[00:05:54] They never worked together subsequently.
[00:05:56] So I think that says something.
[00:05:58] Hmm.
[00:06:00] Mitch Glazer, one of the writers, he did write a very Murray Christmas, which is a Christmas more recent Christmas special.
[00:06:05] I haven't watched it.
[00:06:06] Have you?
[00:06:07] No, no, I'm not sure that I'm especially keen on it, but, um, yeah, the reason why Michael Donoghue didn't write it with him is because he passed away in 1994.
[00:06:14] And unfortunately, so Scrooge of course played by Bill Murray, but he's actually a character named Frank Cross.
[00:06:20] He's a TV exec in this version and other noteworthy class cast members include Bobcat Goldthwait.
[00:06:29] He of the distinctive voice who has the strangest role in this.
[00:06:33] We'll get to it.
[00:06:34] Um, Carol Kane, who, uh, when she was Christmas past, right?
[00:06:39] Yeah, I think so.
[00:06:43] Hi, editor Alicia here popping in just to say we do know that she was the ghost of Christmas present and the cab driver was the ghost of Christmas past.
[00:06:52] We're going to say it wrong a couple more times before we correct ourselves.
[00:06:56] So just bear with us.
[00:06:57] You get what we're saying.
[00:06:59] The rest still stands.
[00:07:00] Okay, back to it.
[00:07:04] Alfre Woodward Woodard, who was maybe my favorite part.
[00:07:07] She just played a grounded character in the middle of all this.
[00:07:11] She's the crotchet character, basically.
[00:07:14] Um, Karen Allen, who played his love interest.
[00:07:16] Many cameos.
[00:07:18] Many cameos.
[00:07:20] It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Makeup and lost to Beetlejuice.
[00:07:24] I do think that's where, one place where it really excelled.
[00:07:27] Yeah, that's probably the only place it excelled.
[00:07:29] Damn.
[00:07:30] When you said nominated for an Oscar, my eyebrows shot to the top of my head.
[00:07:35] What could this possibly have been nominated for?
[00:07:38] Like makeup.
[00:07:39] Makeup.
[00:07:39] Oh, okay.
[00:07:39] Makeup makes sense.
[00:07:40] Yeah.
[00:07:42] Um, and it was a moderate financial success.
[00:07:44] You know, it earned about a hundred million versus 30 million for the reported budget.
[00:07:50] Six of that was for Murray.
[00:07:51] It got mixed reviews from the critics, um, with many of them calling it mean spirited, which
[00:07:57] doesn't surprise me.
[00:08:00] Yeah.
[00:08:01] Um, so yeah, Luke and I, um, we're, we're going to like make this a fun discussion, but,
[00:08:06] uh, I feel like we're going to shock some people with our opinion.
[00:08:10] Uh, we're actually starting this discussion at a low point for the two of us, but before
[00:08:16] people get upset with us, let's get into why we feel the way that we do.
[00:08:20] Um, we're acknowledging that I think this is the first time you watched it as well.
[00:08:24] Yeah.
[00:08:24] It's one of those films that is on TV every year.
[00:08:29] Particularly like it's on the film channels every year.
[00:08:33] And it's always like one of those, you know, one of those films you ought to watch.
[00:08:37] Now, I was really excited to watch it because it's kind of one of those things I've never
[00:08:41] got round to watch.
[00:08:42] Um, yeah, so yeah.
[00:08:47] Um, but I think, yeah, this me, the fact that we just watched it for the first time in 2024
[00:08:52] means we don't have the nostalgia associated with it that a lot of other people probably
[00:08:56] do.
[00:08:57] So we're coming from a different place.
[00:08:59] Um, I was a little bit kinder about this one.
[00:09:02] So let's start with my review.
[00:09:03] I gave it two stars out of five.
[00:09:05] And I said, honestly, I gave this half a star more than I would have myself because everyone
[00:09:10] else likes this film so much and it was nice to finally see what all the buzz is about.
[00:09:13] But I probably would have enjoyed this more watching it as a kid.
[00:09:18] Uh, but as this was the first time I've seen it, I'm afraid it hasn't aged very well.
[00:09:22] It definitely has its moments.
[00:09:24] I barked out a laugh twice, but slapsticks never been my particular brand of humor personally.
[00:09:29] And like, oh, look, she's hitting him.
[00:09:32] Ha ha.
[00:09:33] That's just, yeah, it's just me.
[00:09:35] That's a me thing.
[00:09:36] Um, and the story, to be honest, the story borders on incoherent at times, but there's
[00:09:40] reasons for that.
[00:09:41] We'll talk about that.
[00:09:42] Yeah.
[00:09:42] About the, you know, Murray Donner headbutting.
[00:09:45] Um, not to mention, I continue to how many, how positively icky many of the lines are featuring
[00:09:53] light racism, even more homophobia and especially misogyny.
[00:09:57] Like this is almost the least of it, but he makes out on TV with someone who, I don't know,
[00:10:03] was this his girlfriend?
[00:10:04] She was in the background touching him from time to time.
[00:10:06] And then we're supposed to root for him to get the other girl literally less than a minute
[00:10:10] later.
[00:10:12] I don't know.
[00:10:13] This film wasn't made for me and it makes me understand why a lot of people don't enjoy
[00:10:17] watching Bill Murray.
[00:10:18] So sorry, sorry to the fans, but yeah, gotta be honest with my opinion.
[00:10:21] I mean, I've got to say, I feel much better for my reaction to it, knowing that it wasn't
[00:10:26] just me being, um, sort of bar humbug towards it, that actually we are pretty much in agreement
[00:10:34] on this.
[00:10:34] All right.
[00:10:35] So let's listen to what you said.
[00:10:37] Well, I've just finished watching Scrooged.
[00:10:40] Um, this is a film I haven't seen before and it's one of those, in inverted commas, Christmas
[00:10:46] classics that I've kind of always wanted to watch, but never got round to it.
[00:10:53] I have to say, I wish I'd still not got round to it.
[00:10:57] Um, it's not quite as bad as Clarence was last year, but it's not far off.
[00:11:04] Every single line is delivered at the top of everybody's voices.
[00:11:09] At the entire movie.
[00:11:11] Marie Blaine, the director for that.
[00:11:13] It's really, really, really annoying.
[00:11:15] Um, obviously the plot is based on a Christmas Carol, but only very loosely.
[00:11:23] Um, the character Bill Murray is playing Francis Cross is just really, really, really annoying.
[00:11:35] There are maybe three good jokes in the entire film.
[00:11:43] I really didn't like this.
[00:11:45] It was so overblown and so overdone.
[00:11:49] And the direction is really choppy and the editing is really choppy.
[00:11:56] It's a real headache of a movie.
[00:12:00] Um, like I say, it's not quite as bad as Clarence, but it's not a film I'm ever going to watch again.
[00:12:06] I don't know why people like this.
[00:12:10] I really did not like it at all.
[00:12:15] So tell us what you really think, Luke.
[00:12:18] Yeah.
[00:12:19] Um, so yeah, I think I was being overly generous with the three good jokes because thinking about it, there's only really one time I really laughed.
[00:12:28] And that was when they were doing the trailers for the upcoming attractions at the beginning of the film.
[00:12:36] Because, um, Frank Cross, Murray's character, is a TV executive.
[00:12:40] And they were doing a trailer for a film called The Night the Reindeer Died.
[00:12:46] And it's like making a Christmas themed action movie.
[00:12:49] And the only reason I laughed is they've actually gone and made that movie.
[00:12:54] It's called Big Red One with The Rock and Chris Evans.
[00:12:57] They've actually gone and done it.
[00:12:59] That's now a real thing.
[00:13:02] I wonder if they were inspired by that.
[00:13:04] Yeah.
[00:13:06] But so Murray blames the director, Richard Donner, for the shouting thing that you were complaining about.
[00:13:12] And it is every line is delivered like this.
[00:13:15] Mm-hmm.
[00:13:16] Yeah.
[00:13:17] Apparently they really butted heads, the two of them, about the vision.
[00:13:20] And that probably goes a long way to explain the messy result.
[00:13:25] Um, in an interview the next year, Murray said that he shot a big, long, sloppy movie.
[00:13:31] And he said a lot of content that Murray had personally worked on with the writers was left on the cutting room floor.
[00:13:41] So he really threw Donner under the bus.
[00:13:43] But Donner's only said nice things about Murray for the most part.
[00:13:45] You know, he's like, oh, you know those creatives.
[00:13:48] They can be tricky.
[00:13:49] Yeah, they can be tricky to work with.
[00:13:51] But it's like, also, it felt like Bill Murray was like vamping a lot.
[00:13:56] There seemed to be a lot of improv.
[00:13:58] Mm-hmm.
[00:13:58] And like, I think particularly Karen Allen, you could tell on screen that she was not comfortable.
[00:14:04] Mm-hmm.
[00:14:05] Like, you could almost pick the moments when Murray was going off script, off-piste.
[00:14:11] I was uncomfortable with all the, like, I was uncomfortable for her just because it was such, like,
[00:14:17] it was constantly about groping all the various women who were there randomly for what reason.
[00:14:24] And then, just, yeah.
[00:14:26] And I mean, in this regard, it's actually worse than Clarence.
[00:14:29] Because Clarence is a bad movie, but it's not a mean-spirited one.
[00:14:32] Right.
[00:14:33] Clarence is the good kind of bad.
[00:14:34] Yeah.
[00:14:35] This is positively icky.
[00:14:50] Mm-hmm.
[00:14:51] Well, that'll do it too.
[00:14:52] For about 10 minutes in the middle of this.
[00:14:54] And I thought, do I want to rewind and start again?
[00:14:57] And it's like, no.
[00:14:58] No.
[00:14:59] I really don't want to put myself through this.
[00:15:01] Also, like, I'm sure he's a nice guy.
[00:15:04] I'm sure he's great to work with.
[00:15:06] I have never understood the appeal of Bobcat Goldfights.
[00:15:09] Aw.
[00:15:10] I find him incredibly annoying.
[00:15:14] I like him.
[00:15:15] I like him.
[00:15:16] Okay.
[00:15:18] But, yeah.
[00:15:19] So, Donna and Murray, though, they said that Carol Kane, you know, she's the one who did
[00:15:23] the Ghost of Christmas Pass.
[00:15:25] And actually, that was one of the things that works for me the least.
[00:15:28] I know someone else was saying recently they really like that.
[00:15:30] And sorry, you know, we all like different things.
[00:15:33] But I, just the slapstick thing, it was, the only humor was her just, like, bonking Bill
[00:15:39] Murray over and over with her wand in her wings and stuff.
[00:15:43] And I just, I didn't, oh, God.
[00:15:45] I just wanted it to be over.
[00:15:46] I didn't laugh for a second.
[00:15:48] Not my humor at all.
[00:15:49] And apparently, she was crying on set several times because she was frustrated about these
[00:15:55] scenes and the violence.
[00:15:57] Really?
[00:15:58] Mm-hmm.
[00:16:00] Yeah.
[00:16:00] I mean, this is the thing as well.
[00:16:02] You do a Christmas Carol adaptation and your Scrooge character isn't redeemed at the end
[00:16:09] of the film.
[00:16:10] Yeah.
[00:16:10] He just transitions from being one kind of asshole to a different kind of asshole.
[00:16:15] Yeah.
[00:16:16] But he did employ his actual real life brothers in this film.
[00:16:21] So we have Joel Murray cameos as a party guest.
[00:16:25] Brian Doyle Murray plays Frank's father.
[00:16:28] So it's funny his brother's playing his father.
[00:16:29] But anyway.
[00:16:29] And John Murray plays his on-screen brother, James.
[00:16:32] So I was like, I did think that looked a lot like him.
[00:16:35] And that explains it.
[00:16:36] That explains it.
[00:16:37] I did like that it opened with that fake-out opening scene with the Santa and the elves
[00:16:41] and the guns.
[00:16:42] Yeah.
[00:16:43] Leave agent!
[00:16:44] Leave agent!
[00:16:47] The one thing that I did laugh at was, you know, they showed in this opening montage,
[00:16:53] another thing was they were talking about this adaptation of A Christmas Carol that they're
[00:16:57] doing.
[00:16:58] And they're like, with Mary Lou Retton, who I remember being a popular gymnast before my
[00:17:04] time, but as Tiny Tim.
[00:17:08] He's like, oh my gosh, does that suck?
[00:17:09] But he wasn't even talking about that casting, which you have a gymnast as the sickly, crippled
[00:17:14] character.
[00:17:15] Yeah, or I...
[00:17:18] Okay.
[00:17:19] And also, because they do the bit at the end where Tiny Tim throws away the cane and she's
[00:17:23] like doing backflare.
[00:17:25] Yeah, exactly.
[00:17:26] That was funny.
[00:17:27] That was actually funny.
[00:17:28] Yeah.
[00:17:31] It is also, I don't know, the characterization.
[00:17:33] Like, I am the youngest president in the history of television for a reason.
[00:17:37] Like, a young Scrooge that hasn't had time to build as many regrets.
[00:17:40] Yeah.
[00:17:42] I don't...
[00:17:42] I just found him too mean.
[00:17:45] Well, the cast was great.
[00:17:47] It's not that he's too mean.
[00:17:49] It's just like, how can you do an adaptation of A Christmas Carol where the Scrooge character
[00:17:55] isn't really redeemed?
[00:17:56] Like, what lesson has he learned at the end of this?
[00:17:59] Well, apparently they thought that it was New Yorkers couldn't really be fully redeemed.
[00:18:03] They could only be nice for a night.
[00:18:05] But yeah, we'll get to the end at the end.
[00:18:06] But...
[00:18:07] Oh.
[00:18:08] But okay, going back to the beginning.
[00:18:09] So we don't get the door knocker scene like we do in all the other adaptations.
[00:18:13] We do get a knock at the door.
[00:18:14] Fine.
[00:18:15] One thing this movie does really well is it leans into the ghost horror.
[00:18:20] And like that design for Marley, the rotting corpse was really great.
[00:18:24] I understand, again, why it got a nomination.
[00:18:27] And I like it that he's like, instead of the whole, you know, maybe it's indigestion speech
[00:18:32] from the book, he's like, oh, it's a hallucination brought on by booze, basically.
[00:18:39] I'm so confused, though, about his love life.
[00:18:42] So he has his ex, Claire, and they end up back together.
[00:18:45] But I thought she said at one point she was married.
[00:18:48] Or maybe I misunderstood that.
[00:18:50] And then there's this blonde in the office who is like constantly hanging around.
[00:18:53] Is that his girlfriend?
[00:18:54] Because he just ditched her and ignored her.
[00:18:56] And I don't understand.
[00:18:57] And there's this whole thing, this whole extended bit with the Ghost of Christmas Past, where
[00:19:03] we see Scrooge and Karen Allen's character, this whole like really long involved joke about
[00:19:11] her buying him a copy of the Kama Sutra for Christmas.
[00:19:15] It's like, what?
[00:19:19] I mean, you can buy that, but I don't understand what that's doing in the middle of this movie.
[00:19:23] Yeah, no, that's like that entire scene.
[00:19:26] It was, it was like a Saturday Night Live sketch.
[00:19:30] Just randomly dropped into the middle of the film.
[00:19:33] Like, no sense.
[00:19:34] But it was nice that we had a moment of seeing them as a happy couple and they open one present
[00:19:39] Christmas Eve.
[00:19:41] Which, is that a thing?
[00:19:42] That's something my family does, one present Christmas Eve.
[00:19:45] Is that a...
[00:19:45] No.
[00:19:46] No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
[00:19:47] No.
[00:19:48] No.
[00:19:49] Strong no.
[00:19:50] No.
[00:19:52] Strong no.
[00:19:53] Strong no.
[00:19:54] No.
[00:19:55] Everything Christmas morning then.
[00:19:58] Well, actually we'd be...
[00:19:59] Because my brother now has to drive over to mom and dad's, we've become one of those very
[00:20:04] restrained families that have dinner first and then open the presents.
[00:20:09] Okay.
[00:20:09] So we're allowed to open one present Christmas morning.
[00:20:12] Okay.
[00:20:13] Oh, okay.
[00:20:14] So it's a version of what we do.
[00:20:15] We do one present Christmas Eve and then Christmas this morning.
[00:20:19] Yeah.
[00:20:21] I just have to call out one stupid grammatical thing, but there's at one point, somebody asks,
[00:20:28] I think it was a waiter, are you him?
[00:20:29] And he says, are you he?
[00:20:31] And I hate when people make that correction because it's wrong.
[00:20:34] It's an object.
[00:20:35] It should be him.
[00:20:40] Anyway.
[00:20:42] Also, weirdly, Robert Mitchum turns up.
[00:20:44] Robert Mitchum turns up in this film.
[00:20:47] It's like the head of the network.
[00:20:50] It's like...
[00:20:50] Right.
[00:20:52] That's a weird piece of casting.
[00:20:55] Can I ask about the whole ghost thing?
[00:20:58] This seems to happen while he's in public.
[00:21:00] So it almost is like he's having hallucinations in public and then suddenly he comes to and
[00:21:05] he's somewhere else.
[00:21:06] Like, what are other people seeing him do?
[00:21:09] Well, this is what I mean about it being choppy.
[00:21:11] Like, it feels like it's a film with a load of scenes missing.
[00:21:16] The stuff is just not explained properly.
[00:21:19] Right.
[00:21:21] Because there's a whole bit with the ghost Christmas present, I think.
[00:21:27] I can't even tell which ghost it was.
[00:21:29] But I think it's the ghost of Christmas present with him in a sewer with a homeless person.
[00:21:36] Oh, yeah.
[00:21:37] That was one of the homeless people.
[00:21:39] I had to look that up because I was confused who's the dead guy in the sewer.
[00:21:42] And that was one of the homeless.
[00:21:44] And so I guess the ghost of Christmas present is Carol Kane because the past was the cab driver.
[00:21:49] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:21:50] Yeah.
[00:21:51] But yeah, I looked it up.
[00:21:52] And that was, remember at one point he goes and visits his ex-girlfriend at work and at the homeless shelter.
[00:22:00] Or someone takes him there because he looks so confused.
[00:22:03] And he's talking to those people.
[00:22:05] And I guess that's supposed to be a call back to, you know, the people who take Scrooge's stuff at the end of the book.
[00:22:11] But that was one of those guys in the sewer.
[00:22:14] Okay, well, thank you for telling me because I would never have worked that out in a million years.
[00:22:20] Yeah, I was so confused.
[00:22:22] I actually wrote in that moment in the books, I am so confused.
[00:22:27] But yeah, I did like the ghost of Christmas past as a cab driver.
[00:22:30] I thought that that was a clever way to do it.
[00:22:32] He was like, you know, doing full character acting there with his fake teeth and all.
[00:22:37] Yeah, I actually like the ghost of Christmas yet to come.
[00:22:40] His face is a television.
[00:22:42] I thought that was very well done.
[00:22:46] Yeah, and I liked though that, what's his name in this?
[00:22:52] Bill Murray.
[00:22:54] Frank Cross.
[00:22:54] Yeah, I like that Bill Murray's character, Frank Cross, that he says a thing, you know,
[00:22:59] where he knows the story of A Christmas Carol so that he knows what's expected of him.
[00:23:05] And then that raises the question, does it make it tougher to redeem him if he knows what's coming?
[00:23:10] Yeah.
[00:23:11] And we see, you know, they do some good updates to his backstory.
[00:23:15] You know, he's got the mean dad indeed.
[00:23:17] No boarding school though, but he got lost in TV rather than books,
[00:23:20] which makes sense because he became a TV producer later.
[00:23:25] Yeah, I still just wonder though what other people saw when he's going around these hallucinations
[00:23:30] because he suddenly comes to and they're like, we were talking to you.
[00:23:33] And like, what did you think he was like, they think he's losing it.
[00:23:37] But he always pushes people away when they call him out.
[00:23:39] That makes sense.
[00:23:41] We didn't mention this.
[00:23:43] What do you think there's this new producer who's brought in?
[00:23:46] And I guess he's supposed to be the sort of nephew equivalent in a way,
[00:23:50] although I guess that's also his brother.
[00:23:52] But he just comes in and is like really nice about it,
[00:23:56] but then also taking over his show.
[00:23:58] Yeah, well, no, I think he's trying to stab.
[00:24:00] I think the whole point is he's trying to stab Frank in the back.
[00:24:03] So I don't think he is.
[00:24:05] I don't think he's a, he's a,
[00:24:07] I don't think he is a version of any character in A Christmas Carol.
[00:24:11] I think they came up with him.
[00:24:13] Um, whole cloth.
[00:24:15] I thought he seemed genuinely nice, but maybe it was just, yeah.
[00:24:19] No, I thought he was just like sucking up to Frank.
[00:24:22] To Frank.
[00:24:23] Okay.
[00:24:25] All right.
[00:24:25] So, and then we get the ghost of Christmas present,
[00:24:28] which again, it's Carol Kane.
[00:24:29] It's a fairy, uh, very violent giant fairy.
[00:24:33] And, um, we get some callbacks.
[00:24:35] Like I didn't know her husband had died.
[00:24:37] Don't you remember that period where she wore black for a year?
[00:24:40] And that's actually one of the times I, I laughed out loud.
[00:24:42] That was my biggest laugh.
[00:24:44] It was, yeah,
[00:24:45] it was also more in line with the idea of Scrooge being callous rather than cruel
[00:24:49] because a lot of this leaned cruel, but that's just a, you know,
[00:24:53] someone who's not paying attention.
[00:24:55] Um, it was his brother instead playing the games in the present.
[00:24:59] That made sense.
[00:25:01] I, you know,
[00:25:02] I cringed obviously about the animal cruelty jokes with the mouse with the
[00:25:08] antlers, but then I totally forgot that they set up this thing where they
[00:25:12] wanted TV for cats, but then that ended up paying off at the end.
[00:25:15] So that was a good laugh.
[00:25:17] Yeah.
[00:25:18] Yeah.
[00:25:18] The TV for cats.
[00:25:19] It was the TV for cats.
[00:25:22] Did make me laugh.
[00:25:22] I think that was one of the other,
[00:25:24] one of the other two bits that made me laugh,
[00:25:26] but just a hot tip for cat owner superhero movies is TV for cats.
[00:25:32] They like when they fly around the screen.
[00:25:34] Okay.
[00:25:35] Okay.
[00:25:36] But I was most confused about,
[00:25:37] I like Bobcat Goldthwait,
[00:25:39] but I was so confused about his character.
[00:25:41] So he's fired in the beginning and then we just see him periodically.
[00:25:44] His life is just falling apart overnight.
[00:25:46] And then he shows up back at work with a gun.
[00:25:49] And is shooting at him while at the same time that Frank is going through the whole ghost future thing.
[00:25:59] Um, yeah, very confusing.
[00:26:02] We do get the,
[00:26:04] the ghouls under the future robes instead of the children want and ignorance.
[00:26:08] Yeah.
[00:26:08] That was,
[00:26:09] that was,
[00:26:09] that was very well done,
[00:26:12] but I really didn't like this movie.
[00:26:15] Oh,
[00:26:15] okay.
[00:26:16] Um,
[00:26:17] and Alfie Woodward Woodard,
[00:26:19] like I've barely spoke about her because she wasn't really given that much to do except that her,
[00:26:24] her son is the tiny Tim character.
[00:26:26] Obviously she's the cratchy character.
[00:26:28] Um,
[00:26:29] his name's Calvin and he doesn't speak.
[00:26:32] The scene where they dress him up as a Christmas tree and he looks so miserable and everyone else is laughing.
[00:26:37] I'm like,
[00:26:37] this is such a mean movie.
[00:26:39] And then later,
[00:26:40] instead of him being dead,
[00:26:42] he gets a vision of him older and institutionalized.
[00:26:45] And I just,
[00:26:46] I'm not sure that he would care.
[00:26:50] I do buy though.
[00:26:52] We see that Claire,
[00:26:53] his ex-girlfriend has become a bitch because he ruined her.
[00:26:56] And I can see,
[00:26:58] I like the idea that that's more horrifying than losing her is to like stop her from being a good person.
[00:27:04] Yeah.
[00:27:05] Yeah.
[00:27:06] And we get the,
[00:27:07] uh,
[00:27:08] burning in the coffin.
[00:27:09] I always think of that as a shout out to the Albert Finney movie.
[00:27:12] Oh yeah.
[00:27:13] Particularly in this case,
[00:27:15] definitely.
[00:27:15] Yeah.
[00:27:16] But I'm so baffled by the ending.
[00:27:18] So he gives his office to the guy with the gun,
[00:27:22] but he's getting fired anyway.
[00:27:24] And who is he helping at any point in this?
[00:27:28] Not even himself.
[00:27:29] He's not even helping himself.
[00:27:31] This is the thing.
[00:27:32] Like,
[00:27:33] he's not,
[00:27:35] he,
[00:27:36] he's not a better person at the end of the film than he was at the beginning.
[00:27:40] He's just an ass in a completely different,
[00:27:43] in a different way.
[00:27:45] And like you say,
[00:27:46] there's the whole bit with the,
[00:27:48] the,
[00:27:48] the girlfriend or the,
[00:27:50] the person we think is the girlfriend.
[00:27:53] And that is really icky.
[00:27:55] Really icky.
[00:27:57] And also,
[00:27:57] I really hope Karen Allen fired her agent after this film.
[00:28:01] Cause like,
[00:28:03] this is a,
[00:28:04] this,
[00:28:04] she is a better actress,
[00:28:07] a much better actress than what she's been given to do in this,
[00:28:11] in this film.
[00:28:12] So I hope her agent got fired after this,
[00:28:15] frankly.
[00:28:15] Yeah.
[00:28:16] Yeah.
[00:28:17] I did wonder if like,
[00:28:18] it was supposed to be,
[00:28:19] maybe it was him just imagining things in this version,
[00:28:23] but then he refers to,
[00:28:25] you know,
[00:28:25] the games he saw his brother playing on TV and they're like,
[00:28:28] Oh,
[00:28:28] wow.
[00:28:28] How does he know the answers?
[00:28:30] So it's confirmation.
[00:28:30] It's real.
[00:28:31] So yeah,
[00:28:32] I'm just,
[00:28:33] I'm,
[00:28:33] I'm left confused.
[00:28:35] Um,
[00:28:36] and you know,
[00:28:37] again,
[00:28:37] I'm really sorry to anyone listening.
[00:28:40] If this is a particular favorite film of yours,
[00:28:42] please send us an email.
[00:28:44] We'll shift us podcast at gmail.com.
[00:28:46] Let us know what we've missed or,
[00:28:48] you know,
[00:28:48] give it a good defense.
[00:28:50] We,
[00:28:50] we celebrate what people love and this is a movie that people love.
[00:28:54] Sorry.
[00:28:54] It's not the two of us.
[00:28:55] Yeah.
[00:28:56] Any more thoughts before we move on?
[00:28:58] Um,
[00:28:59] we're not,
[00:28:59] we're not,
[00:28:59] we're not saying you are bad people for liking the film.
[00:29:03] We're just saying we don't like this.
[00:29:05] We don't like the film very much.
[00:29:07] Yeah.
[00:29:07] Um,
[00:29:08] a lot of people love it.
[00:29:09] So it's,
[00:29:09] but yeah,
[00:29:10] whatever,
[00:29:11] whatever,
[00:29:11] whatever floats,
[00:29:12] whatever floats you boat.
[00:29:13] But,
[00:29:14] um,
[00:29:15] yeah,
[00:29:15] like I said,
[00:29:16] this is,
[00:29:17] this is definitely this year's version of Clarence,
[00:29:21] although they are both bad movies,
[00:29:24] but they're,
[00:29:24] they're bad in very different ways.
[00:29:27] I think this made me angrier because it's such a mean spirited,
[00:29:34] nasty.
[00:29:35] And also,
[00:29:36] frankly,
[00:29:36] I expect better from Richard Donner and Bill Murray.
[00:29:40] Hmm.
[00:29:41] You know,
[00:29:41] I don't know if I expect better from Bill Murray,
[00:29:44] but yeah.
[00:29:44] Oh,
[00:29:44] you're not,
[00:29:44] but you're not a Bill Murray fan.
[00:29:46] Eh.
[00:29:48] Okay.
[00:29:48] I think he kind of gives him,
[00:29:49] I don't know.
[00:29:50] Um,
[00:29:51] he seems like you tell,
[00:29:53] you hear these stories about him being cool and showing up places,
[00:29:55] but then I also hear stories about him being like icky around women and stuff.
[00:29:59] And then I see this movie and I'm like,
[00:30:00] well,
[00:30:01] yeah,
[00:30:01] yeah,
[00:30:01] you can kind of believe it.
[00:30:03] Hmm.
[00:30:05] Okay.
[00:30:05] I think we,
[00:30:06] we'll,
[00:30:06] we'll move on.
[00:30:07] All right.
[00:30:07] Let's move on to a movie that,
[00:30:09] uh,
[00:30:09] you definitely like better.
[00:30:11] And I like a whole lot better.
[00:30:12] And that's a Flintstones Christmas Carol from 1994.
[00:30:16] Um,
[00:30:16] this is the shortest movie on today's list.
[00:30:18] It's another meta movie because they are putting on a faithful adaptation as a play within the show.
[00:30:26] While Fred,
[00:30:27] who's playing Scrooge,
[00:30:28] his life mirrors the story because he's like gone full method to prepare for the role.
[00:30:33] Um,
[00:30:34] it's directed by Joanna Romerza,
[00:30:37] who also,
[00:30:38] by the way,
[00:30:38] directed a whole bunch of episodes of Captain Planet.
[00:30:41] He's a,
[00:30:42] but anyway,
[00:30:42] um,
[00:30:45] so you want to hear something disturbing.
[00:30:47] Uh,
[00:30:47] so I do this,
[00:30:49] this Christmas Advent calendar thing with the Academy of Death Racers,
[00:30:54] uh,
[00:30:54] just a film group I'm part of.
[00:30:56] And,
[00:30:56] uh,
[00:30:57] one of the prompts is always watch a film,
[00:31:01] you know,
[00:31:01] directed by a woman.
[00:31:03] And,
[00:31:03] you know,
[00:31:04] I go through the prompts and we had all these,
[00:31:06] these films that we had to watch.
[00:31:07] So I was trying to slot in the films that I had to watch for this and for the Lordhounds Netflix stuff into as many different categories.
[00:31:13] And I was looking for a film directed by a woman.
[00:31:16] And this is the only one out of all of the films we watched and all of the films I watched for the Lordhounds Netflix Christmas.
[00:31:24] Only one directed by a woman.
[00:31:26] Wow.
[00:31:27] Yeah.
[00:31:28] Yeah.
[00:31:29] And that's why that prompt is there.
[00:31:31] That's,
[00:31:31] that's disturbed.
[00:31:32] That's disturbing.
[00:31:33] Yeah.
[00:31:35] Uh,
[00:31:36] it was written by Glenn Leopold,
[00:31:38] who's a Hanna-Barbera regular.
[00:31:40] This is a Hanna-Barbera thing,
[00:31:41] obviously Flintstones and Scrooge is Fred Flintstone voiced by Henry Corden.
[00:31:47] Um,
[00:31:47] I definitely love this one.
[00:31:49] This one is a special favorite of mine.
[00:31:51] Uh,
[00:31:52] Luke,
[00:31:52] you were more Luke,
[00:31:53] Luke warm on it.
[00:31:54] Ha ha ha.
[00:31:55] Let's hear what you had to say.
[00:31:57] So I've done it.
[00:31:59] I've watched all the adaptations of the Christmas Carol that we're going to record on.
[00:32:05] Um,
[00:32:05] so this is me,
[00:32:07] uh,
[00:32:08] talking about the Flintstones.
[00:32:10] Bit of an odd adaptation,
[00:32:12] if I have to say.
[00:32:13] Although,
[00:32:14] for a children's cartoon,
[00:32:15] a remarkably faithful one,
[00:32:17] um,
[00:32:19] I don't really get why they have the sort of conceit that they're putting on community theater.
[00:32:26] Why not just do a straight adaptation of the Christmas Carol?
[00:32:31] I'm not sure I see what having the,
[00:32:36] the community theater bit adds to the story.
[00:32:40] But it's always nice to watch the Flintstones.
[00:32:43] I always love the machines and gadgets that are dinosaur powered.
[00:32:50] Um,
[00:32:51] I particularly like the sewing machine and the,
[00:32:55] uh,
[00:32:56] the wind machine that is a,
[00:32:58] uh,
[00:32:59] um,
[00:33:00] that is a woolly mammoth.
[00:33:01] Um,
[00:33:02] so yeah,
[00:33:03] I enjoyed it well enough.
[00:33:05] It's somewhere towards the middle of the adaptations we've looked at.
[00:33:11] It's okay.
[00:33:12] Not bad.
[00:33:14] I watched it actually two years in a row.
[00:33:17] I watched it last year and then I watched it again this year for,
[00:33:19] for this.
[00:33:20] So last year when I watched it,
[00:33:22] I gave it three and a half stars and I said underrated Christmas Carol,
[00:33:25] adaptation and a fun blast from the past past.
[00:33:28] I love the play within a play structure that blurs the lines of reality.
[00:33:32] And I'd forgotten what a philandering nin,
[00:33:35] nim can poop.
[00:33:36] Fred is hashtag Wilma deserves better.
[00:33:39] I'm adding to this,
[00:33:40] to my private list of Christmas films to revisit in the coming years.
[00:33:43] And then I revisited it right away this year.
[00:33:46] And I gave it four stars this year.
[00:33:48] And I said,
[00:33:48] this one really does seem to take some nods from Scrooged as well.
[00:33:51] I watched this one right after Scrooged,
[00:33:53] by the way,
[00:33:54] Fred even tries to kiss someone else.
[00:33:56] Ick,
[00:33:56] but at least this is portrayed as bad behavior here.
[00:33:59] And somehow,
[00:34:00] despite being 40 minutes shorter,
[00:34:02] it really does manage to pack more into a more coherent story.
[00:34:06] The meta aspect is better blended,
[00:34:08] both giving us a surprising amount from the original text with Stone Age puns,
[00:34:12] of course,
[00:34:13] and showing us how that is mirroring Fred's current reality,
[00:34:17] blurring the lines with magical realism.
[00:34:19] The additions like the bedrock flu and Wilma carrying the whole show add extra fun.
[00:34:24] In short,
[00:34:25] I already liked this one,
[00:34:26] but watching it right after Scrooged makes me like it even more.
[00:34:29] Those poor animals though.
[00:34:33] This is actually the fourth Flintstones Christmas special that was released.
[00:34:36] Were you a Flintstones fan growing up?
[00:34:38] Um,
[00:34:40] I could take or leave the Flintstones.
[00:34:42] It wasn't like I would watch it if it was on TV,
[00:34:45] but it wasn't something I would go and like actively find.
[00:34:50] Um,
[00:34:51] so kind of,
[00:34:53] um,
[00:34:54] I do think if I'm honest,
[00:34:55] I was,
[00:34:57] I'm probably suffering from a little bit of Christmas,
[00:34:59] Christmas Carol fatigue,
[00:35:00] um,
[00:35:01] by,
[00:35:02] by the time I watched this.
[00:35:03] So I may not have given it,
[00:35:05] I may not have given it a completely fair shot.
[00:35:08] Like I said,
[00:35:08] in the voicemail,
[00:35:09] it was the last,
[00:35:10] it was the last adaptation I watched.
[00:35:13] So I think,
[00:35:14] I think I might've liked it better had I watched it sort of earlier on in the,
[00:35:19] in the process.
[00:35:20] Cause yeah,
[00:35:21] I,
[00:35:21] I,
[00:35:21] I think if I'm being completely,
[00:35:23] uh,
[00:35:24] honest,
[00:35:24] I'm suffering from Christmas Carol fatigue a little bit at this point.
[00:35:27] Hmm.
[00:35:28] That makes sense.
[00:35:29] Yeah.
[00:35:30] Do you,
[00:35:31] I mean,
[00:35:31] uh,
[00:35:31] you were iffy on the home meta play within the show aspect,
[00:35:35] but,
[00:35:35] um,
[00:35:36] I,
[00:35:36] I feel like it did that better than Scrooge because it actually shows us more of
[00:35:41] the play and how that mirrors Fred's real life.
[00:35:43] I think it did it better than the man who invented Christmas too.
[00:35:46] What do you think about that?
[00:35:49] So the thing is,
[00:35:51] if it's a play within a play,
[00:35:53] they then have the best special effects.
[00:35:56] Yeah.
[00:35:56] Of any play that's ever been put on.
[00:35:59] Oh yeah.
[00:35:59] Because,
[00:36:00] um,
[00:36:00] like when Fred,
[00:36:02] when Fred is being taken around,
[00:36:03] uh,
[00:36:04] Pilthdown,
[00:36:05] by the way,
[00:36:06] that,
[00:36:06] that is a very funny joke.
[00:36:08] Um,
[00:36:09] that,
[00:36:09] that,
[00:36:09] that they keep referring to Pilthdown,
[00:36:12] because Pilthdown man,
[00:36:14] Neanderthals,
[00:36:15] um,
[00:36:16] but actually Pilthdown man is a fake.
[00:36:19] Oh,
[00:36:19] it's been proven.
[00:36:21] It's been proven to be a hoax anyway,
[00:36:23] but like when they're taking him around Pilthdown,
[00:36:25] Fred and the ghosts are transparent.
[00:36:28] Right.
[00:36:29] Like,
[00:36:29] yeah.
[00:36:29] So is this a play?
[00:36:32] Is it,
[00:36:32] is it?
[00:36:33] Maybe I'm being overly critical here,
[00:36:36] but.
[00:36:36] Well,
[00:36:36] that's why I would call it magical realism,
[00:36:38] but I love that.
[00:36:39] And I think,
[00:36:40] yeah,
[00:36:40] I like weird more than you do.
[00:36:41] And we're going to,
[00:36:42] that's probably going to come up a couple of times today.
[00:36:45] Okay.
[00:36:46] Um,
[00:36:46] but yeah,
[00:36:47] the play part though,
[00:36:48] it's quite accurate.
[00:36:49] It uses a lot of the classic lines,
[00:36:51] but you know,
[00:36:52] with the stone age puns and,
[00:36:54] um,
[00:36:54] Marbly.
[00:36:55] Yeah.
[00:36:56] Marbly.
[00:36:56] Yeah.
[00:36:57] And,
[00:36:58] and crag it instead of.
[00:37:01] And the Scrooge,
[00:37:02] he really does seem more oblivious than intentionally cruel.
[00:37:06] Yes.
[00:37:06] Other than the trying to kiss another woman thing.
[00:37:08] We'll just,
[00:37:09] and the twist of this one is that he does Fred Flintstone.
[00:37:15] Obviously he has a family and it's his own family who needs his love,
[00:37:19] not another family per se.
[00:37:22] Yes.
[00:37:23] And by the way,
[00:37:24] how cute Bam Bam and pedal,
[00:37:26] um,
[00:37:26] pebble.
[00:37:27] Always,
[00:37:27] always.
[00:37:28] Okay.
[00:37:29] And I liked,
[00:37:30] you know,
[00:37:30] there was a little,
[00:37:32] just the slightest bit of slapstick in this,
[00:37:34] you know,
[00:37:34] when the spirit bonks Scrooge on the window by quote unquote accident,
[00:37:38] as she's taking him out,
[00:37:39] that feels it was Wilma,
[00:37:40] by the way.
[00:37:41] So it feels earned,
[00:37:41] not stupid.
[00:37:42] I really laughed at that.
[00:37:44] Not just like,
[00:37:44] Oh,
[00:37:44] make it stop.
[00:37:46] Um,
[00:37:47] I do think Fred is the least likable character,
[00:37:49] but of course that's the point.
[00:37:51] Uh,
[00:37:51] Mr.
[00:37:52] Slate,
[00:37:52] Fred's boss says he should have played Scrooge and Betty's like,
[00:37:55] that'd be typecasting.
[00:37:57] So he plays Marbly,
[00:37:59] which makes sense also because he's his boss and also a jackass.
[00:38:03] Yeah.
[00:38:04] And,
[00:38:04] and like one of the act,
[00:38:06] one of the actresses that gets the bedrock bug is like clearly trying to seduce Fred.
[00:38:12] Yeah.
[00:38:13] Which is a bit weird.
[00:38:14] Yeah.
[00:38:15] Well,
[00:38:15] that's what I was saying.
[00:38:15] And he almost kisses her like,
[00:38:17] no,
[00:38:17] not cool.
[00:38:19] Um,
[00:38:20] I always love Barney.
[00:38:22] Uh,
[00:38:22] he plays both Kragit and Fezziwig.
[00:38:25] And of course he's Fred's conscience always.
[00:38:28] And yeah,
[00:38:29] at Bam Bam,
[00:38:30] obviously made to play tiny Tim.
[00:38:32] Yeah.
[00:38:33] But it's super cute at the end.
[00:38:35] Bam Bam chokes on,
[00:38:36] he's got the one line he's been practicing the whole,
[00:38:38] the whole movie.
[00:38:39] And then at the end he chokes and Pebble steps in and says it for him.
[00:38:43] Yeah.
[00:38:44] Oh,
[00:38:44] but,
[00:38:44] but speaking of magical realism at one point.
[00:38:47] So of course,
[00:38:49] you know,
[00:38:49] Flintstones was on for so long that,
[00:38:51] um,
[00:38:52] there are older versions of,
[00:38:54] uh,
[00:38:54] Pebbles and Bam Bam that exist out there too.
[00:38:56] And so the older version of Pebbles shows up at one point,
[00:38:59] like as,
[00:39:00] as you know,
[00:39:01] a teenager,
[00:39:02] adult,
[00:39:02] young adult Pebbles.
[00:39:04] And Fred's like Pebbles as Fanny.
[00:39:06] And,
[00:39:08] and that's just,
[00:39:09] you know,
[00:39:09] they,
[00:39:10] they were just winking at us with all this,
[00:39:12] just,
[00:39:13] you know,
[00:39:13] it wasn't meant to be super realistic because it's about dinosaurs who make
[00:39:18] special effects.
[00:39:19] So,
[00:39:19] yeah.
[00:39:21] I like the bedrock flu twist,
[00:39:23] bedrock bug.
[00:39:24] Yeah.
[00:39:24] The bedrock bug.
[00:39:25] Yeah.
[00:39:26] Yeah.
[00:39:27] By the way,
[00:39:28] I didn't like 1994.
[00:39:30] It looks much,
[00:39:31] because it's,
[00:39:32] it's still done in that kind of sixties animation style that the
[00:39:36] original Flintstones cartoons.
[00:39:39] So it looks much older than 1994.
[00:39:42] There was also,
[00:39:43] I'm not sure which version you watched.
[00:39:46] There is a,
[00:39:46] um,
[00:39:47] there's a version that you can find,
[00:39:49] uh,
[00:39:50] online.
[00:39:51] That's considerably worse quality than if you find another version,
[00:39:54] you can watch locally on your computer.
[00:39:57] Okay.
[00:39:58] Uh,
[00:39:59] just in terms of preservation of the video.
[00:40:02] I love that.
[00:40:03] Of course I love Wilma in general,
[00:40:05] and I love that she was the MVP of this and got acknowledged for it.
[00:40:09] Like she was the costume doing the costumes and then she had to step in to
[00:40:12] play several of the parts.
[00:40:13] And then at the end,
[00:40:15] the,
[00:40:15] she is given the flowers instead of Fred,
[00:40:19] which as it should be.
[00:40:21] And he's like,
[00:40:21] Oh,
[00:40:22] Oh yeah.
[00:40:22] I guess no,
[00:40:23] that's fair.
[00:40:23] Yeah.
[00:40:24] And also John Rhys Davis,
[00:40:26] uh,
[00:40:26] voice Gimli himself as the voice of the director.
[00:40:30] It's like,
[00:40:30] Oh,
[00:40:32] that's cool.
[00:40:33] I love,
[00:40:34] yeah.
[00:40:35] when,
[00:40:35] when they're talking in the final scene in,
[00:40:37] within the play,
[00:40:38] Wilma,
[00:40:39] who at this point is playing bells,
[00:40:41] like,
[00:40:41] of course you're a changed man.
[00:40:42] It's in the script,
[00:40:44] Scrooge.
[00:40:44] And the director is off screen looking at a script.
[00:40:47] He's like,
[00:40:47] none of this is in my script.
[00:40:52] Hmm.
[00:40:53] Uh,
[00:40:54] and,
[00:40:54] and of course,
[00:40:55] you know,
[00:40:55] there's always the bit in the book where Scrooge wants to buy a turkey
[00:41:00] bigger than tiny Tim or whatever.
[00:41:02] And then,
[00:41:02] yeah,
[00:41:02] of course a turkey source.
[00:41:04] That's the biggest turkey in any adaptation.
[00:41:08] And I like,
[00:41:09] he gets the kid to bring the presents to his own family instead of the
[00:41:12] cratchit.
[00:41:13] So it's just,
[00:41:13] yeah.
[00:41:14] I hope that kid got a really generous tip.
[00:41:16] Yeah.
[00:41:17] Yeah.
[00:41:18] He was put through it.
[00:41:19] He was really,
[00:41:20] yeah,
[00:41:21] really,
[00:41:22] yeah.
[00:41:22] Good to Fred.
[00:41:23] You can tell this is,
[00:41:24] you can tell this was done in an age before online shopping as well.
[00:41:28] Cause like the last minute rush to the department store for Christmas
[00:41:33] shopping is definitely a thing.
[00:41:34] Yeah.
[00:41:35] Right.
[00:41:35] Well,
[00:41:35] I guess people still do that because,
[00:41:37] you know,
[00:41:37] at the,
[00:41:38] especially in recent years,
[00:41:39] it takes so long to ship things.
[00:41:41] If you haven't bought Christmas presents by now,
[00:41:43] as we're recording even,
[00:41:45] um,
[00:41:46] yeah,
[00:41:47] you're going to be in trouble.
[00:41:49] Um,
[00:41:50] any final thoughts on Flintstones?
[00:41:52] Um,
[00:41:53] like I say,
[00:41:53] I would like to go back and watch it when I haven't just watched a load of
[00:41:58] other adaptations.
[00:41:59] That's fair.
[00:42:00] Of a Christmas Carol.
[00:42:01] Cause I,
[00:42:01] I do think I was,
[00:42:03] I may not be,
[00:42:04] I may not have been entirely fair to it.
[00:42:06] Okay.
[00:42:07] Okay.
[00:42:07] At that point.
[00:42:08] No,
[00:42:08] it's fair.
[00:42:09] It's not perfect.
[00:42:10] I just,
[00:42:10] I don't know.
[00:42:11] I really enjoy that one.
[00:42:12] And I like the weird thing.
[00:42:14] Like I'm not,
[00:42:15] I'm not a huge fan of magical realism.
[00:42:16] To be honest.
[00:42:18] Like,
[00:42:18] are they doing a play or are they not?
[00:42:20] Are they doing a play or are they not doing a play?
[00:42:23] I mean,
[00:42:24] but it's,
[00:42:25] it's,
[00:42:25] you know,
[00:42:26] where they use dinosaurs as.
[00:42:31] I don't know where my brain draws these lines.
[00:42:36] All right.
[00:42:39] That's fair.
[00:42:40] That's fair.
[00:42:40] Well,
[00:42:41] I recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it to give it a watch yourself.
[00:42:44] You can find it online and yeah,
[00:42:47] let us know what you think.
[00:42:49] This is a good spot to take a break.
[00:42:51] And when we get back,
[00:42:52] we're going to dive into the gender swapped Christmas carols,
[00:42:56] which are some of the most cheesily,
[00:42:59] cringely fun.
[00:43:01] See you in a sec.
[00:43:02] We're going to go to the next one.
[00:43:03] We're going to go to the next one.
[00:43:04] And that's why we've switched to Shopify.
[00:43:06] The platform,
[00:43:07] the before Shopify used,
[00:43:08] has used regularly updates,
[00:43:10] which have led to the point,
[00:43:12] that the shop didn't work.
[00:43:13] Finally,
[00:43:14] our Nemo Boards shop makes
[00:43:15] the mobile device a good figure.
[00:43:17] And the illustrations on the boards
[00:43:19] come now much clearer,
[00:43:20] what is also important
[00:43:21] and what our brand also makes.
[00:43:24] Start your test today.
[00:43:26] For 1 Euro pro Monat
[00:43:27] auf shopify.de slash radio.
[00:43:36] Okay,
[00:43:37] Luke,
[00:43:38] we've got three
[00:43:39] gender swapped Christmas carols
[00:43:41] on the menu.
[00:43:42] The first one was
[00:43:43] proposed by you.
[00:43:45] It is
[00:43:46] It's Christmas Carol,
[00:43:48] which I know you especially
[00:43:49] wanted to watch
[00:43:50] because of the
[00:43:51] because of the title.
[00:43:53] Yeah,
[00:43:53] just because of the title.
[00:43:54] No other reason.
[00:43:55] What about Carrie Fisher?
[00:43:56] I didn't even know
[00:43:57] when I saw the title
[00:43:58] that Carrie Fisher was in it.
[00:43:59] Although,
[00:44:00] when you listen to my voice note,
[00:44:01] that is a massive bonus.
[00:44:04] Yeah.
[00:44:05] So,
[00:44:06] yeah,
[00:44:07] I really like this.
[00:44:10] It's not a perfect adaptation.
[00:44:12] It's very hallmark,
[00:44:14] but
[00:44:14] it's a lot of fun.
[00:44:17] Okay,
[00:44:18] let's
[00:44:19] yeah,
[00:44:20] let's start with
[00:44:21] your thoughts on it.
[00:44:23] So,
[00:44:24] I just finished watching
[00:44:25] It's Christmas Carol
[00:44:26] starring the late,
[00:44:28] great Carrie Fisher.
[00:44:29] Uh,
[00:44:30] this is definitely
[00:44:31] a twist
[00:44:32] on a Christmas Carol.
[00:44:34] Um,
[00:44:36] it is
[00:44:38] Eve
[00:44:39] played by
[00:44:40] Carrie Fisher
[00:44:42] who is
[00:44:43] acting as
[00:44:44] the ghosts
[00:44:45] of Christmas past,
[00:44:47] present,
[00:44:47] and future
[00:44:48] because of budget cuts
[00:44:50] in the afterlife.
[00:44:51] Haunting her
[00:44:54] protégé,
[00:44:55] Carol
[00:44:55] Huffler,
[00:44:57] who is,
[00:44:59] uh,
[00:44:59] the owner of a publishing company.
[00:45:02] It is your typical
[00:45:03] hallmark
[00:45:04] movie
[00:45:05] in that
[00:45:06] everything looks amazing,
[00:45:08] all the houses
[00:45:10] look amazing,
[00:45:11] everything is amazing.
[00:45:14] Um,
[00:45:14] I'm not quite sure
[00:45:16] it really gets
[00:45:17] the moral
[00:45:18] of a Christmas Carol
[00:45:19] because
[00:45:20] the moral
[00:45:22] of this story
[00:45:23] seems to be
[00:45:24] that
[00:45:26] Carol
[00:45:27] Scrooge
[00:45:28] can't be a better,
[00:45:29] different person
[00:45:30] unless she ends up
[00:45:31] with
[00:45:32] an ex-boyfriend
[00:45:34] she dumped
[00:45:34] a decade ago.
[00:45:36] And
[00:45:37] with it being
[00:45:38] a hallmark movie,
[00:45:40] guess what
[00:45:41] the outcome
[00:45:41] of that is?
[00:45:43] Anyway,
[00:45:43] I quite enjoyed it.
[00:45:46] Carrie Fisher
[00:45:46] is clearly
[00:45:47] so much better
[00:45:49] than the material
[00:45:50] she's been given
[00:45:51] to work with.
[00:45:52] It's untrue.
[00:45:54] And
[00:45:55] she does steal
[00:45:56] every scene
[00:45:57] she's in
[00:45:58] completely.
[00:46:00] But yeah,
[00:46:01] it's a hallmark movie.
[00:46:02] It is what it is.
[00:46:03] It does what it says
[00:46:04] on the tin.
[00:46:05] It was enjoyable
[00:46:06] for an hour and a half.
[00:46:09] Okay.
[00:46:10] So yeah,
[00:46:11] as you said,
[00:46:11] it is a hallmark movie.
[00:46:13] Yeah,
[00:46:13] I need to correct that
[00:46:14] from the intro
[00:46:16] episode.
[00:46:16] I was wrong.
[00:46:17] It was a movie
[00:46:19] made by Hallmark.
[00:46:20] I'm sorry,
[00:46:21] I got that wrong.
[00:46:22] And aired on Hallmark
[00:46:23] in 2012,
[00:46:24] by the way,
[00:46:25] in case we didn't say it.
[00:46:25] It was directed
[00:46:26] by Michael M. Scott
[00:46:27] and written by
[00:46:28] William Pennick
[00:46:29] and Christopher Say.
[00:46:31] And I looked
[00:46:32] through their portfolios
[00:46:33] and they seem to do
[00:46:34] especially a lot
[00:46:35] of Christmas movies
[00:46:36] and one of them
[00:46:36] does some horror.
[00:46:38] Scrooge was played
[00:46:39] by Emmanuel Valier.
[00:46:41] Valier,
[00:46:42] I guess is how
[00:46:42] you say her last name.
[00:46:43] She's the one,
[00:46:44] I know her face
[00:46:45] but I've seen her
[00:46:46] in things
[00:46:46] but um,
[00:46:47] and she's Carol.
[00:46:49] Yeah,
[00:46:49] so Scrooge is Carol
[00:46:50] because it's Christmas
[00:46:52] Carol.
[00:46:54] There's only one spirit
[00:46:55] as you said
[00:46:55] because of the budget cuts
[00:46:56] and so that's
[00:46:57] Carrie Fisher
[00:46:58] who's playing
[00:46:59] Eve Mailer
[00:46:59] instead of Marley.
[00:47:02] And uh,
[00:47:03] when did,
[00:47:04] how did you hear
[00:47:04] about this movie,
[00:47:06] Luke?
[00:47:06] No,
[00:47:07] I just literally
[00:47:07] like googled
[00:47:09] Hallmark adaptations
[00:47:11] of A Christmas Carol
[00:47:12] and the first one
[00:47:13] that came up with
[00:47:13] was It's Christmas Carol
[00:47:15] and it's like
[00:47:15] yes,
[00:47:16] yes,
[00:47:17] that's going
[00:47:18] on the list.
[00:47:19] Just the title alone
[00:47:20] it's going
[00:47:20] on the list.
[00:47:22] Yeah.
[00:47:23] Um,
[00:47:24] so my Letterboxd review
[00:47:26] I gave it 2.5
[00:47:27] out of 5 stars.
[00:47:28] I said pure
[00:47:29] but a heart,
[00:47:29] you know,
[00:47:30] I get,
[00:47:30] it's a pure
[00:47:30] Hallmark cheese
[00:47:31] with a side
[00:47:32] of Carrie Fisher,
[00:47:32] maybe the most cringe
[00:47:34] and least faithful
[00:47:35] adaptation of A Christmas Carol
[00:47:36] I've watched
[00:47:37] during this project.
[00:47:38] Side note,
[00:47:39] this is before I watched
[00:47:40] A New Diva's Christmas Carol
[00:47:41] but I enjoyed it
[00:47:42] well enough anyway.
[00:47:45] I like,
[00:47:46] so in this iteration
[00:47:47] they are editors
[00:47:48] as in book editors
[00:47:50] instead of money counters.
[00:47:51] They have a company
[00:47:52] called Springwood Publishing.
[00:47:55] I love the fashion
[00:47:56] by the way,
[00:47:56] very 2012 fashion.
[00:47:58] They have all these belts
[00:47:59] like I have so many belts
[00:48:00] upstairs that I hardly
[00:48:01] wear anymore
[00:48:02] but I was really
[00:48:03] into belts for a while.
[00:48:07] Yeah,
[00:48:07] all the awkward cheese,
[00:48:09] there's built-in
[00:48:09] commercial breaks.
[00:48:11] Oh,
[00:48:12] Carson Kressley
[00:48:13] shows up too.
[00:48:14] Oh,
[00:48:14] is that the guy
[00:48:15] from Queer Eye
[00:48:16] for the Straight Guy?
[00:48:17] Yeah,
[00:48:17] yeah,
[00:48:18] and he's Fred
[00:48:19] and so Fred
[00:48:20] is the name
[00:48:21] that's normally
[00:48:22] given to the nephew
[00:48:23] and the nephew
[00:48:23] is usually the one
[00:48:24] who's like,
[00:48:25] oh,
[00:48:26] my uncle's not
[00:48:27] such a bad guy,
[00:48:28] he only hurts himself,
[00:48:29] let's support him.
[00:48:30] In this case,
[00:48:31] he's like,
[00:48:31] let's rebel,
[00:48:33] I hate her,
[00:48:34] let's start a new company.
[00:48:36] Like,
[00:48:37] he's anti-Fred
[00:48:37] but he's the one
[00:48:38] called Fred.
[00:48:39] Also,
[00:48:40] there's this whole
[00:48:41] running thing
[00:48:42] throughout the film
[00:48:43] that Carol is obsessed
[00:48:46] with only publishing
[00:48:47] books that sell well
[00:48:49] and all the other
[00:48:50] employees want to
[00:48:52] publish literature
[00:48:53] and it's like,
[00:48:54] I need to introduce
[00:48:56] you people
[00:48:56] to the concept
[00:48:57] of the idea
[00:48:57] that a book
[00:48:58] can sell well,
[00:48:59] be commercially successful,
[00:49:00] Carol,
[00:49:01] and be good.
[00:49:03] Right.
[00:49:03] This is not a binary,
[00:49:05] this is not a binary choice.
[00:49:07] I can tell you
[00:49:08] that this was not
[00:49:09] written by people
[00:49:10] in the literary world
[00:49:11] because Carol was really,
[00:49:13] well,
[00:49:13] first of all,
[00:49:13] it's like,
[00:49:14] when she meets
[00:49:15] and we'll talk about
[00:49:16] the guy,
[00:49:17] but when she,
[00:49:18] we see in the past
[00:49:20] her meeting him
[00:49:20] and falling in love,
[00:49:21] they bond over
[00:49:23] only reading
[00:49:23] cliche classics
[00:49:24] and then he's like,
[00:49:26] let me blow your mind
[00:49:26] with this book,
[00:49:28] A Hundred Years of Solitude.
[00:49:29] She's like,
[00:49:30] never heard of it.
[00:49:30] Like,
[00:49:30] you are a publisher
[00:49:31] who's never heard
[00:49:32] of A Hundred Years of Solitude?
[00:49:34] No,
[00:49:34] no,
[00:49:34] but there's an even
[00:49:35] better bit
[00:49:36] that demonstrates
[00:49:36] the thing.
[00:49:37] She's supposed to be
[00:49:38] into Dickens
[00:49:38] and Dostoevsky.
[00:49:39] Right.
[00:49:40] She has to look up
[00:49:41] the plot.
[00:49:42] Right.
[00:49:43] Exactly.
[00:49:45] Because Hallmark viewers,
[00:49:47] we have to assume,
[00:49:48] have consumed
[00:49:49] no other culture
[00:49:50] outside of the Hallmark universe.
[00:49:52] It's their only
[00:49:53] movie subscription channel.
[00:49:54] So we need to make sure
[00:49:55] that everybody's
[00:49:55] on the same page.
[00:49:57] Yeah.
[00:49:58] Yeah.
[00:50:00] But I do think
[00:50:01] I liked the whole bit
[00:50:02] with her,
[00:50:02] or her assistant
[00:50:03] is this woman
[00:50:04] named Kendra
[00:50:05] and she's basically
[00:50:06] blocking her
[00:50:07] from moving to London.
[00:50:08] She wants to move
[00:50:09] to London
[00:50:09] to be with her boyfriend,
[00:50:10] Zach,
[00:50:10] and she thinks
[00:50:12] she's helping her
[00:50:13] by blocking her
[00:50:13] from following a guy
[00:50:15] or whatever,
[00:50:15] but she's also
[00:50:16] just being selfish
[00:50:16] and that seemed
[00:50:17] like a proper
[00:50:17] Scrooge characterization.
[00:50:21] She's also,
[00:50:22] her mom is still alive
[00:50:24] and she is being
[00:50:25] taken care of
[00:50:26] by a woman
[00:50:28] named Gloria.
[00:50:29] So this is this
[00:50:30] whole new factor
[00:50:31] in there.
[00:50:32] But I did notice
[00:50:33] when Gloria
[00:50:33] and her mother
[00:50:34] were together,
[00:50:35] her mom says
[00:50:35] she watches
[00:50:36] the 1951 Scrooge
[00:50:38] movie every year.
[00:50:40] The one that's
[00:50:41] my new baby.
[00:50:42] Yes.
[00:50:44] And then,
[00:50:45] of course,
[00:50:45] the other
[00:50:46] main character
[00:50:47] in this
[00:50:48] is Ben Woodley
[00:50:49] who is an author
[00:50:50] and at one point
[00:50:51] she said
[00:50:52] she's the only person
[00:50:53] she ever loved
[00:50:53] and it's like,
[00:50:54] okay,
[00:50:54] well,
[00:50:54] what about mom?
[00:50:55] But fine.
[00:50:56] They did break up
[00:50:57] because she wanted
[00:50:58] to pursue money
[00:50:58] so that's faithful.
[00:51:01] Eve Mailer
[00:51:01] as a ghost
[00:51:02] just looks normal.
[00:51:03] She just puts
[00:51:04] on a cloak
[00:51:04] for the futures.
[00:51:05] So I'm glad
[00:51:06] that they call
[00:51:07] out the budget
[00:51:07] in the beginning.
[00:51:09] Yeah.
[00:51:10] Yeah.
[00:51:13] Yeah,
[00:51:14] so
[00:51:16] what's her favorite?
[00:51:17] Carol is convinced
[00:51:18] this is all a dream
[00:51:19] and which makes sense.
[00:51:21] But Eve's telling her,
[00:51:23] yeah,
[00:51:23] they are the board
[00:51:24] of correctors,
[00:51:25] the spiritual entities
[00:51:26] who oversee
[00:51:27] the balance of things.
[00:51:28] People like me
[00:51:29] have been coming down
[00:51:30] here to help
[00:51:31] people like you
[00:51:32] for generations
[00:51:33] and then she says
[00:51:34] about Charles Dickens,
[00:51:35] Chuck was an incredibly
[00:51:36] sweet guy
[00:51:37] but he had a tendency
[00:51:38] to embellish.
[00:51:39] Three ghosts
[00:51:39] instead of one,
[00:51:41] turkey instead
[00:51:41] of a slab of mutton.
[00:51:45] Yeah,
[00:51:46] I do like,
[00:51:47] we'll come back
[00:51:48] to this
[00:51:49] in Spirited
[00:51:50] but I do like,
[00:51:51] and I like this
[00:51:52] with It's a Wonderful Life
[00:51:54] last year,
[00:51:54] the whole idea
[00:51:55] of the afterlife
[00:51:56] having like
[00:51:56] bureaucratic structures.
[00:51:58] Yeah,
[00:51:59] yeah,
[00:51:59] exactly.
[00:51:59] It's very funny
[00:52:00] to me.
[00:52:01] Yeah,
[00:52:02] and Beetlejuice
[00:52:03] is like that too,
[00:52:03] yeah.
[00:52:04] Yeah.
[00:52:05] Carol says
[00:52:06] she always thought
[00:52:06] Scrooge was the victim
[00:52:07] which is like,
[00:52:08] okay,
[00:52:08] sure.
[00:52:09] But she still
[00:52:10] had to look up
[00:52:10] the plot.
[00:52:11] Yeah.
[00:52:13] We do get
[00:52:14] a Star Wars reference
[00:52:15] when Carol can't
[00:52:15] remember Christmas
[00:52:16] Carol,
[00:52:16] she makes,
[00:52:17] Carrie Fisher
[00:52:18] makes a Star Wars
[00:52:19] reference,
[00:52:19] so wink,
[00:52:20] wink.
[00:52:21] Yeah,
[00:52:21] wink,
[00:52:22] wink,
[00:52:22] nudge,
[00:52:22] nudge.
[00:52:23] I noticed
[00:52:24] that it's also
[00:52:25] like Scrooge
[00:52:26] in the sense
[00:52:27] that like
[00:52:27] her hallucinations
[00:52:28] or whatever
[00:52:29] started a party
[00:52:30] so people just
[00:52:30] think she's
[00:52:31] losing it.
[00:52:32] Yeah,
[00:52:34] yeah.
[00:52:34] I do like the,
[00:52:36] it's very well done
[00:52:37] when she goes back
[00:52:38] into the past.
[00:52:39] Mm-hmm.
[00:52:40] They've got like
[00:52:40] the movie theater
[00:52:41] with Back to the Future
[00:52:43] and the newspaper
[00:52:44] with,
[00:52:45] you know,
[00:52:46] Reagan names
[00:52:46] first female
[00:52:47] Supreme Court
[00:52:48] Justice Sandra Day
[00:52:49] O'Connor.
[00:52:50] For me,
[00:52:51] it was the break dancers.
[00:52:52] Like,
[00:52:52] how do you know
[00:52:52] it's 80s?
[00:52:53] Like,
[00:52:53] look,
[00:52:53] there's break dancers
[00:52:55] in their dress
[00:52:55] like MC Hammer.
[00:52:58] There's leg warmers.
[00:53:00] Look,
[00:53:00] that's how you know
[00:53:01] it's 1985.
[00:53:01] 85.
[00:53:04] But okay,
[00:53:05] one weird thing
[00:53:06] is so
[00:53:06] if Eve,
[00:53:08] Eve was her old boss
[00:53:09] and she's supposed
[00:53:09] to be playing
[00:53:10] the Marley role,
[00:53:11] it seems like Eve
[00:53:12] was a good person
[00:53:12] while she was alive
[00:53:13] and this movie
[00:53:15] defines a good person
[00:53:16] by saying
[00:53:16] you should read
[00:53:17] more good novels
[00:53:18] instead of just
[00:53:19] caring about
[00:53:20] making money.
[00:53:21] And also,
[00:53:22] And Carol grew
[00:53:23] the business
[00:53:23] after her death.
[00:53:24] So why is Eve
[00:53:25] coming,
[00:53:26] you know,
[00:53:27] why is she,
[00:53:28] the story
[00:53:29] is that Marley
[00:53:30] says don't let
[00:53:31] happen to you
[00:53:31] what happened to me
[00:53:32] and here she's like
[00:53:33] I was good
[00:53:34] but I just want to help you.
[00:53:35] but you've gone off the road.
[00:53:36] Also,
[00:53:37] it seems to define
[00:53:37] good person as
[00:53:38] must be romantically
[00:53:40] involved with
[00:53:41] brackets,
[00:53:42] ideal partner
[00:53:43] as well.
[00:53:43] Well,
[00:53:44] that's hallmark.
[00:53:45] Like I said
[00:53:45] in the voice footage,
[00:53:47] I'm not sure
[00:53:47] they quite understand
[00:53:48] the moral
[00:53:49] of A Christmas Carol
[00:53:50] because it is like
[00:53:52] that it would be
[00:53:52] it would be like
[00:53:53] it would be like
[00:53:54] Scrooge
[00:53:54] in a straight adaptation,
[00:53:56] you know,
[00:53:56] going to Bell's
[00:53:57] house at the end
[00:53:58] of the book
[00:53:59] rather than
[00:53:59] rather than
[00:54:01] Cratchit's.
[00:54:02] Also,
[00:54:03] like he's a
[00:54:05] the boyfriend character
[00:54:06] is a struggling
[00:54:07] novelist
[00:54:08] and they're both
[00:54:09] you know,
[00:54:10] in the past
[00:54:10] they're both
[00:54:11] short of money
[00:54:12] but they
[00:54:13] so they move
[00:54:13] into this
[00:54:14] supposedly run-down
[00:54:15] apartment
[00:54:16] which looks
[00:54:17] amazing
[00:54:18] in the way
[00:54:19] that all
[00:54:19] hallmark homes
[00:54:20] do
[00:54:20] where she buys
[00:54:22] him this
[00:54:22] really expensive
[00:54:23] antique
[00:54:25] typewriter
[00:54:26] as well.
[00:54:28] No.
[00:54:29] I have to say
[00:54:30] at the end
[00:54:31] I paused
[00:54:32] and read
[00:54:32] the first page
[00:54:33] of Ben's
[00:54:34] book
[00:54:34] that was supposed
[00:54:35] to be so brilliant
[00:54:35] it was going to
[00:54:36] change everybody's
[00:54:37] life
[00:54:37] and I'm sorry
[00:54:37] that's not going
[00:54:38] to be a bestseller.
[00:54:41] I know I wasn't
[00:54:42] supposed to
[00:54:42] pull it
[00:54:43] like I
[00:54:44] paused
[00:54:44] and I
[00:54:45] read things
[00:54:45] in silo
[00:54:46] and they
[00:54:46] actually
[00:54:46] deepen my
[00:54:47] appreciation
[00:54:48] in this
[00:54:48] case
[00:54:48] I'm like
[00:54:49] oh
[00:54:49] hallmark
[00:54:52] but oh
[00:54:53] we didn't
[00:54:53] mention also
[00:54:54] that she
[00:54:54] had
[00:54:55] Tanya
[00:54:55] was one
[00:54:55] of her
[00:54:56] assistants
[00:54:56] she fired
[00:54:57] and she
[00:54:57] had kids
[00:54:58] and
[00:55:00] oh and
[00:55:01] about her
[00:55:02] I
[00:55:02] one thing
[00:55:03] I did
[00:55:03] like
[00:55:03] okay
[00:55:04] a positive
[00:55:04] thing
[00:55:04] is that
[00:55:06] she says
[00:55:06] about
[00:55:07] I don't like
[00:55:07] that she says
[00:55:08] this obviously
[00:55:08] but I think
[00:55:09] it's very
[00:55:09] characteristic
[00:55:10] of Scrooge
[00:55:10] she says
[00:55:11] I love
[00:55:11] my mom
[00:55:12] I pay
[00:55:12] for everything
[00:55:13] time is
[00:55:14] expensive
[00:55:14] and I can
[00:55:15] see her
[00:55:16] really believing
[00:55:16] that like
[00:55:17] that's how
[00:55:17] that's her
[00:55:18] love language
[00:55:18] is paying
[00:55:19] for things
[00:55:20] yeah
[00:55:21] but she
[00:55:22] must really
[00:55:22] have been
[00:55:23] a crappy
[00:55:23] ex
[00:55:24] if she didn't
[00:55:24] know who
[00:55:25] her ex's
[00:55:25] sister was
[00:55:26] I found
[00:55:29] the grave
[00:55:30] at the end
[00:55:30] anticlimactic
[00:55:31] too
[00:55:31] yeah
[00:55:32] I gotta say
[00:55:33] the grave
[00:55:33] at the end
[00:55:34] it's a bit
[00:55:35] anticlimactic
[00:55:36] but I thought
[00:55:36] that the
[00:55:37] assistant
[00:55:38] you know
[00:55:39] she
[00:55:39] because
[00:55:40] actually
[00:55:40] the thing
[00:55:41] is
[00:55:41] the thing
[00:55:42] is
[00:55:42] actually
[00:55:43] Carol
[00:55:43] is
[00:55:44] Carol
[00:55:44] kind of
[00:55:45] doubles
[00:55:45] as both
[00:55:45] Scrooge
[00:55:46] and Marley
[00:55:47] in this
[00:55:48] in this
[00:55:49] sort of telling
[00:55:50] because
[00:55:50] it's the
[00:55:51] assistant
[00:55:51] that she
[00:55:52] no
[00:55:53] she succeeds
[00:55:54] in making
[00:55:54] the assistant
[00:55:55] into
[00:55:55] this hard
[00:55:57] self-contained
[00:55:59] uber
[00:55:59] successful
[00:56:00] publishing
[00:56:02] person
[00:56:03] so it's
[00:56:03] this weird
[00:56:04] Carol is
[00:56:04] this weird
[00:56:05] combination
[00:56:06] of both
[00:56:06] Scrooge
[00:56:07] and Marley
[00:56:08] and I
[00:56:09] thought
[00:56:09] the actor
[00:56:11] playing
[00:56:11] the assistant
[00:56:12] actually
[00:56:13] really
[00:56:13] nailed
[00:56:15] that
[00:56:15] because
[00:56:16] there's
[00:56:16] this whole
[00:56:17] thing of
[00:56:17] I didn't
[00:56:18] bring
[00:56:18] flowers
[00:56:19] I know
[00:56:19] you would
[00:56:19] have
[00:56:20] thought
[00:56:20] it
[00:56:21] was
[00:56:21] wasteful
[00:56:22] or
[00:56:22] something
[00:56:22] like
[00:56:22] that
[00:56:23] I
[00:56:23] thought
[00:56:24] that
[00:56:24] was
[00:56:25] actually
[00:56:25] quite
[00:56:25] effective
[00:56:26] no
[00:56:26] I
[00:56:26] quite
[00:56:27] like
[00:56:27] Kendra
[00:56:27] and I'm
[00:56:28] glad
[00:56:28] that
[00:56:28] she
[00:56:28] got
[00:56:29] she
[00:56:29] eventually
[00:56:30] at the
[00:56:30] end
[00:56:30] actually
[00:56:31] she
[00:56:31] doesn't
[00:56:31] get
[00:56:32] transferred
[00:56:32] to
[00:56:32] London
[00:56:32] like
[00:56:33] she
[00:56:33] asked
[00:56:33] instead
[00:56:33] she gets
[00:56:34] a
[00:56:34] one
[00:56:34] year
[00:56:35] sabbatical
[00:56:35] to do
[00:56:36] writing
[00:56:36] which
[00:56:36] I'm like
[00:56:37] she can
[00:56:38] give her
[00:56:39] the job
[00:56:39] and she
[00:56:40] can
[00:56:40] also
[00:56:40] do
[00:56:40] writing
[00:56:42] I don't
[00:56:42] know
[00:56:43] what
[00:56:43] you
[00:56:43] this
[00:56:43] is
[00:56:44] this
[00:56:44] magical
[00:56:44] hallmark
[00:56:45] reality
[00:56:45] where
[00:56:46] if
[00:56:46] you
[00:56:46] just
[00:56:46] write
[00:56:46] a
[00:56:47] book
[00:56:47] you'll
[00:56:47] immediately
[00:56:47] earn a
[00:56:48] bunch
[00:57:03] of
[00:57:08] if
[00:57:08] I
[00:57:08] could
[00:57:08] write
[00:57:08] that
[00:57:09] book
[00:57:10] that
[00:57:11] Hallmark
[00:57:12] call me
[00:57:12] I'll
[00:57:28] make
[00:57:29] in the
[00:57:29] adaptations
[00:57:29] I
[00:57:30] like
[00:57:31] that
[00:57:31] Tanya
[00:57:31] and her
[00:57:31] daughter
[00:57:32] keep
[00:57:32] shutting
[00:57:32] the
[00:57:33] door
[00:57:33] in
[00:57:33] her
[00:57:33] face
[00:57:33] I'm
[00:57:33] like
[00:57:34] that's
[00:57:34] fair
[00:57:34] this
[00:57:34] is
[00:57:35] fair
[00:57:36] even
[00:57:36] the
[00:57:37] child
[00:57:37] is
[00:57:37] like
[00:57:37] no
[00:57:40] she's
[00:57:40] still
[00:57:41] reluctant
[00:57:41] to give
[00:57:41] the
[00:57:42] whole
[00:57:42] office
[00:57:42] benefits
[00:57:43] at the
[00:57:43] end
[00:57:43] but
[00:57:43] eventually
[00:57:44] relents
[00:57:45] but
[00:57:46] I
[00:57:46] have
[00:57:46] questions
[00:57:46] about
[00:57:47] they
[00:57:47] actually
[00:57:48] really
[00:57:48] planned
[00:57:49] the
[00:57:49] revolt
[00:57:50] like
[00:57:50] Carson
[00:57:51] Kressler
[00:57:51] and
[00:57:52] you know
[00:57:52] the other
[00:57:53] assistants
[00:57:53] and whatever
[00:57:54] the other
[00:57:55] staff
[00:57:55] they'd
[00:57:56] already
[00:57:57] called
[00:57:57] all
[00:57:57] their
[00:57:58] clients
[00:57:58] and said
[00:57:59] do you
[00:57:59] want to
[00:58:00] leave
[00:58:00] with me
[00:58:00] so now
[00:58:01] they have
[00:58:01] to call
[00:58:02] them all
[00:58:04] the coup
[00:58:05] is off
[00:58:05] we got
[00:58:05] benefits
[00:58:06] and also
[00:58:07] like
[00:58:07] also
[00:58:08] like
[00:58:09] Carol
[00:58:10] makes
[00:58:10] the
[00:58:11] entire
[00:58:11] staff
[00:58:11] of the
[00:58:12] publishing
[00:58:13] company
[00:58:13] come in
[00:58:14] on Christmas
[00:58:15] day
[00:58:15] yeah
[00:58:16] why
[00:58:17] like
[00:58:18] there's
[00:58:18] nothing
[00:58:19] for
[00:58:19] there'll
[00:58:19] be
[00:58:19] nothing
[00:58:20] for
[00:58:20] them
[00:58:20] to do
[00:58:20] and also
[00:58:21] at the
[00:58:22] end
[00:58:22] it's
[00:58:22] not
[00:58:22] go
[00:58:23] home
[00:58:23] and
[00:58:23] everybody
[00:58:23] spend
[00:58:24] time
[00:58:24] with
[00:58:24] your
[00:58:24] farmers
[00:58:24] no
[00:58:25] it's
[00:58:25] coming
[00:58:25] to the
[00:58:26] office
[00:58:26] and we'll
[00:58:26] have a
[00:58:27] massive
[00:58:27] Christmas
[00:58:27] dinner
[00:58:27] together
[00:58:28] it's
[00:58:28] like
[00:58:28] if I'm
[00:58:29] an employee
[00:58:30] of that
[00:58:30] company
[00:58:31] screw that
[00:58:31] I'm going
[00:58:32] home and
[00:58:33] having
[00:58:33] Christmas
[00:58:33] dinner
[00:58:33] with my
[00:58:34] family
[00:58:34] thank you
[00:58:35] very much
[00:58:35] to be
[00:58:36] honest
[00:58:36] there's
[00:58:36] a few
[00:58:38] there's
[00:58:38] a few
[00:58:39] where
[00:58:39] this
[00:58:39] comes up
[00:58:41] even
[00:58:41] also the
[00:58:42] next one
[00:58:43] yeah
[00:58:43] before
[00:58:44] do you
[00:58:44] have any
[00:58:44] final thoughts
[00:58:45] about
[00:58:45] It's
[00:58:45] Christmas
[00:58:45] Carol
[00:58:46] before we
[00:58:46] get
[00:58:46] into
[00:58:47] the
[00:58:47] next
[00:58:47] no
[00:58:47] except
[00:58:48] it's
[00:58:48] always
[00:58:48] really
[00:58:49] nice
[00:58:49] to see
[00:58:49] Carrie
[00:58:50] Fisher
[00:58:50] in
[00:58:51] stuff
[00:58:52] that
[00:58:52] isn't
[00:58:52] Star Trek
[00:58:53] Star Wars
[00:58:54] isn't
[00:58:55] Star Wars
[00:58:55] leave that
[00:58:57] in
[00:58:58] yeah
[00:58:59] it's
[00:58:59] stuff
[00:58:59] that
[00:58:59] isn't
[00:58:59] Star Wars
[00:59:00] and like
[00:59:02] she just
[00:59:04] brings
[00:59:04] an element
[00:59:06] of
[00:59:08] class
[00:59:09] gravitas
[00:59:10] I don't
[00:59:10] know what
[00:59:11] you want
[00:59:11] to call
[00:59:11] it
[00:59:11] but she
[00:59:12] just
[00:59:12] raises
[00:59:13] the level
[00:59:13] of the
[00:59:14] whole
[00:59:14] film
[00:59:15] she's
[00:59:16] just
[00:59:16] like
[00:59:18] she just
[00:59:19] has
[00:59:19] it
[00:59:20] whatever
[00:59:20] it
[00:59:30] I
[00:59:30] really
[00:59:31] like
[00:59:31] her
[00:59:31] daughter
[00:59:31] too
[00:59:31] Billy
[00:59:32] Lord
[00:59:32] I'd
[00:59:33] like
[00:59:33] to
[00:59:33] see
[00:59:33] her
[00:59:34] more
[00:59:34] stuff
[00:59:34] too
[00:59:34] she's
[00:59:35] been
[00:59:35] especially
[00:59:36] good
[00:59:36] in
[00:59:36] like
[00:59:37] American
[00:59:38] horror
[00:59:38] story
[00:59:38] and
[00:59:38] stuff
[00:59:39] okay
[00:59:41] all right
[00:59:42] moving
[00:59:42] on to
[00:59:43] a
[00:59:44] diva's
[00:59:45] Christmas
[00:59:45] Carol
[00:59:45] from
[00:59:46] 2000
[00:59:46] this
[00:59:47] was
[00:59:47] a
[00:59:48] VH1
[00:59:48] production
[00:59:49] and it
[00:59:50] was
[00:59:50] directed
[00:59:51] and written
[00:59:51] by
[00:59:52] Richard
[00:59:52] Shankman
[00:59:53] who
[00:59:53] Richard
[00:59:54] Shankman
[00:59:55] he's
[00:59:55] probably
[00:59:56] best
[00:59:56] known
[00:59:56] for
[00:59:56] the
[00:59:56] man
[00:59:56] from
[00:59:57] earth
[00:59:57] my
[00:59:57] personal
[00:59:58] favorite
[00:59:58] of
[00:59:58] his
[00:59:58] is
[00:59:59] Abraham
[00:59:59] Lincoln
[00:59:59] versus
[01:00:00] zombies
[01:00:00] and
[01:00:02] the
[01:00:02] Scrooge
[01:00:03] in this
[01:00:03] one
[01:00:03] was
[01:00:03] Vanessa
[01:00:04] Williams
[01:00:04] who's
[01:00:05] Ebony
[01:00:05] Scrooge
[01:00:06] which is
[01:00:06] very smart
[01:00:07] I get it
[01:00:08] I see
[01:00:08] what you
[01:00:08] did there
[01:00:09] other
[01:00:10] notable
[01:00:10] casts
[01:00:11] includes
[01:00:11] Chili
[01:00:12] from
[01:00:12] you know
[01:00:13] TLC
[01:00:15] Brian
[01:00:16] McNamara
[01:00:16] as
[01:00:17] Bob
[01:00:17] Cratchit
[01:00:18] and
[01:00:18] Kathy
[01:00:18] Griffin
[01:00:19] as
[01:00:19] the
[01:00:19] ghost
[01:00:20] of
[01:00:20] Christmas
[01:00:20] past
[01:00:21] so
[01:00:22] all
[01:00:22] right
[01:00:22] let's
[01:00:22] check
[01:00:23] in
[01:00:23] first
[01:00:23] with
[01:00:23] what
[01:00:24] Luke
[01:00:24] thought
[01:00:25] about
[01:00:25] it
[01:00:25] after
[01:00:26] he
[01:00:26] watched
[01:00:26] okay
[01:00:28] so I
[01:00:28] just
[01:00:29] finished
[01:00:29] watching
[01:00:29] the
[01:00:30] 2000s
[01:00:31] version
[01:00:31] of
[01:00:33] a
[01:00:33] Christmas
[01:00:34] diva's
[01:00:35] Christmas
[01:00:35] Carol
[01:00:37] I
[01:00:38] haven't
[01:00:38] laughed
[01:00:39] at any
[01:00:40] of the
[01:00:41] adaptations
[01:00:41] as much
[01:00:42] as I
[01:00:42] laughed
[01:00:42] at that
[01:00:43] the
[01:00:45] truly
[01:00:45] inspired
[01:00:46] choice
[01:00:47] to make
[01:00:49] the whole
[01:00:49] of
[01:00:50] a
[01:00:51] Christmas
[01:00:51] yet
[01:00:51] to
[01:00:52] come
[01:00:52] a
[01:00:53] Christmas
[01:00:54] yet
[01:00:54] to
[01:00:54] come
[01:00:54] bit
[01:00:55] a
[01:00:55] behind
[01:00:56] the
[01:00:56] music
[01:00:56] special
[01:00:57] speaking
[01:00:57] as
[01:00:58] somebody
[01:00:58] who
[01:00:58] used
[01:00:58] to
[01:00:58] watch
[01:00:59] behind
[01:00:59] the
[01:00:59] music
[01:00:59] a
[01:01:00] lot
[01:01:00] I
[01:01:01] laughed
[01:01:01] so
[01:01:02] hard
[01:01:02] at that
[01:01:02] I
[01:01:03] had
[01:01:03] to
[01:01:03] pause
[01:01:03] the
[01:01:03] movie
[01:01:06] it's
[01:01:07] just
[01:01:07] it's
[01:01:07] really
[01:01:08] funny
[01:01:10] it
[01:01:10] definitely
[01:01:11] falls
[01:01:11] into
[01:01:11] the
[01:01:12] so
[01:01:12] bad
[01:01:12] it's
[01:01:12] good
[01:01:13] category
[01:01:13] also
[01:01:14] Cratchit
[01:01:15] and
[01:01:15] Scrooge
[01:01:15] are
[01:01:16] sleeping
[01:01:16] together
[01:01:18] that's
[01:01:18] a
[01:01:19] weird
[01:01:19] bit
[01:01:20] of
[01:01:20] adaptation
[01:01:21] didn't
[01:01:22] see
[01:01:22] that
[01:01:22] twist
[01:01:23] coming
[01:01:24] Vanessa
[01:01:25] Williams
[01:01:26] is
[01:01:26] great
[01:01:27] as
[01:01:27] Ebony
[01:01:27] Scrooge
[01:01:28] although
[01:01:29] I
[01:01:29] have
[01:01:29] to
[01:01:43] good
[01:01:43] jokes
[01:01:44] there's
[01:01:44] a
[01:01:44] particularly
[01:01:45] good
[01:01:45] joke
[01:01:45] at the
[01:01:46] beginning
[01:01:46] where
[01:01:46] they
[01:01:46] are
[01:01:46] clearly
[01:01:47] taking
[01:01:47] the
[01:01:48] mick
[01:01:49] and
[01:01:49] they
[01:01:49] are
[01:01:49] clearly
[01:01:51] pastiching
[01:01:51] Mariah
[01:01:52] Carey's
[01:01:53] all I
[01:01:53] want
[01:01:53] for
[01:02:13] the
[01:02:13] fun
[01:02:16] and
[01:02:17] the
[01:02:17] V
[01:02:17] film
[01:02:18] they
[01:02:19] were
[01:02:19] used
[01:02:19] judiciously
[01:02:20] yes
[01:02:21] it's
[01:02:22] hammy
[01:02:23] with
[01:02:23] wooden
[01:02:23] acting
[01:02:24] from
[01:02:24] many
[01:02:24] of
[01:02:24] the
[01:02:24] non
[01:02:25] Vanessa
[01:02:25] Williams
[01:02:25] actors
[01:02:26] but
[01:02:26] it
[01:02:26] shows
[01:02:27] surprising
[01:02:27] respect
[01:02:28] for
[01:02:28] the
[01:02:28] source
[01:02:28] material
[01:02:29] which
[01:02:29] the
[01:02:30] writers
[01:02:30] have
[01:02:30] clearly
[01:02:30] actually
[01:02:31] read
[01:02:31] all in
[01:02:32] all
[01:02:32] a
[01:02:33] likable
[01:02:33] take
[01:02:33] I
[01:02:33] can
[01:02:34] see
[01:02:34] myself
[01:02:34] revisiting
[01:02:35] again
[01:02:35] I
[01:02:36] just
[01:02:36] don't
[01:02:36] get
[01:02:36] why
[01:02:36] it's
[01:02:37] so
[01:02:37] hard
[01:02:37] to
[01:02:37] find
[01:02:37] and
[01:02:38] why
[01:02:39] don't
[01:02:39] we
[01:02:39] get
[01:02:39] to
[01:02:40] enjoy
[01:02:40] Vanessa
[01:02:40] Williams
[01:02:41] in
[01:02:41] more
[01:02:41] films
[01:02:42] in
[01:02:42] general
[01:02:43] so
[01:02:44] yes
[01:02:44] I
[01:02:45] came
[01:02:45] out
[01:02:45] of
[01:02:45] this
[01:02:45] with
[01:02:46] a
[01:02:46] renewed
[01:02:46] love
[01:02:47] of
[01:02:47] Vanessa
[01:02:47] Williams
[01:02:48] especially
[01:02:49] yeah
[01:02:50] like I
[01:02:50] say
[01:02:50] I
[01:02:51] think
[01:02:51] I
[01:02:51] I'm
[01:02:51] not
[01:02:52] saying
[01:02:52] this
[01:02:53] has
[01:02:54] any
[01:02:54] relation
[01:02:54] to
[01:02:54] what
[01:02:55] Vanessa
[01:02:55] Williams
[01:02:55] is
[01:02:56] like
[01:02:56] as
[01:02:56] a
[01:02:56] person
[01:02:57] I've
[01:02:57] never
[01:02:57] met
[01:02:57] Vanessa
[01:02:58] Williams
[01:02:58] I don't
[01:02:58] know
[01:02:58] what
[01:02:59] she's
[01:02:59] like
[01:02:59] but
[01:02:59] she's
[01:03:00] very
[01:03:00] good
[01:03:00] at
[01:03:00] playing
[01:03:01] these
[01:03:01] kind
[01:03:01] of
[01:03:01] bitchy
[01:03:02] mean
[01:03:04] characters
[01:03:04] she's
[01:03:05] kind
[01:03:05] of
[01:03:05] played
[01:03:06] the
[01:03:22] it's
[01:03:23] quite
[01:03:23] narrow
[01:03:23] and
[01:03:24] like
[01:03:24] I
[01:03:25] said
[01:03:25] she's
[01:03:25] better
[01:03:26] as
[01:03:27] the
[01:03:27] bitchy
[01:03:27] deavery
[01:03:28] Scrooge
[01:03:29] than
[01:03:29] the
[01:03:30] redeemed
[01:03:30] Scrooge
[01:03:31] at the
[01:03:31] end
[01:03:31] like
[01:03:32] like
[01:03:32] I
[01:03:32] said
[01:03:32] in
[01:03:32] the
[01:03:32] voice
[01:03:33] I
[01:03:34] was
[01:03:34] like
[01:03:35] I
[01:03:36] used
[01:03:36] to
[01:03:36] love
[01:03:36] behind
[01:03:37] the
[01:03:37] music
[01:03:37] I
[01:03:38] watched
[01:03:39] a lot
[01:03:39] behind
[01:03:39] the
[01:03:40] music
[01:03:40] and
[01:03:41] that
[01:03:41] whole
[01:03:41] section
[01:03:42] of
[01:03:42] Christmas
[01:03:42] yet
[01:03:43] to
[01:03:43] come
[01:03:43] as
[01:03:43] a
[01:03:43] behind
[01:03:43] the
[01:03:44] music
[01:03:44] episode
[01:03:45] just
[01:03:46] I
[01:03:48] laughed
[01:03:48] so
[01:03:49] hard
[01:03:49] at
[01:03:49] that
[01:03:49] I
[01:03:50] was
[01:03:50] in
[01:03:51] stitches
[01:03:54] I
[01:03:56] expected
[01:03:56] this
[01:03:57] to be
[01:03:57] more
[01:03:57] of a
[01:03:58] musical
[01:03:58] going
[01:03:59] in
[01:03:59] just
[01:03:59] I
[01:04:00] thought
[01:04:00] yeah
[01:04:00] that
[01:04:00] it's
[01:04:00] gonna
[01:04:01] be
[01:04:01] like
[01:04:01] a
[01:04:01] straight
[01:04:01] up
[01:04:01] musical
[01:04:02] but
[01:04:02] it
[01:04:02] wasn't
[01:04:02] really
[01:04:02] it
[01:04:03] was
[01:04:03] just
[01:04:03] it's
[01:04:03] about
[01:04:04] a
[01:04:04] singer
[01:04:05] I
[01:04:05] love
[01:04:05] how
[01:04:05] basically
[01:04:06] all
[01:04:06] these
[01:04:06] we're
[01:04:07] talking
[01:04:07] about
[01:04:07] today
[01:04:07] have
[01:04:08] them
[01:04:08] doing
[01:04:08] something
[01:04:09] in
[01:04:09] the
[01:04:09] arts
[01:04:10] instead
[01:04:10] of
[01:04:10] counting
[01:04:11] money
[01:04:11] because
[01:04:11] these
[01:04:12] films
[01:04:12] are
[01:04:12] all
[01:04:12] made
[01:04:13] by
[01:04:13] artists
[01:04:15] but
[01:04:15] yeah
[01:04:15] she
[01:04:16] she's
[01:04:16] a
[01:04:22] it's
[01:04:22] not
[01:04:22] a
[01:04:22] musical
[01:04:24] moment
[01:04:24] but
[01:04:25] it's
[01:04:25] not
[01:04:25] like
[01:04:25] people
[01:04:25] stop
[01:04:26] and
[01:04:26] dance
[01:04:26] or
[01:04:26] something
[01:04:27] just
[01:04:28] sometimes
[01:04:28] she sings
[01:04:28] on stage
[01:04:29] but yeah
[01:04:30] she's
[01:04:30] ebony
[01:04:31] she's
[01:04:31] a diva
[01:04:32] bitchy
[01:04:32] singer
[01:04:33] and
[01:04:34] they
[01:04:34] open
[01:04:35] filming
[01:04:35] a music
[01:04:36] video
[01:04:36] in France
[01:04:37] which we
[01:04:37] never see
[01:04:38] outside
[01:04:38] so they
[01:04:39] seem like
[01:04:40] they imported
[01:04:40] some real
[01:04:40] French
[01:04:41] people
[01:04:41] to be
[01:04:43] there
[01:04:43] in the
[01:04:43] cast
[01:04:44] but I
[01:04:44] do not
[01:04:44] believe
[01:04:44] for a
[01:04:45] second
[01:04:45] that was
[01:04:45] filmed
[01:04:45] in France
[01:04:46] but then
[01:04:47] they have
[01:04:48] to make
[01:04:48] the joke
[01:04:50] she demands
[01:04:51] French toast
[01:04:52] and they're
[01:04:52] like
[01:04:53] qu'est-ce que c'est
[01:04:53] French toast
[01:04:54] which of course
[01:04:57] that's obviously
[01:04:58] not what they
[01:04:59] call it
[01:05:00] it's called
[01:05:01] pain perdu
[01:05:01] in French
[01:05:02] lost
[01:05:03] lost
[01:05:04] bread
[01:05:04] yeah
[01:05:04] basically
[01:05:05] yeah
[01:05:05] but no
[01:05:06] I just
[01:05:06] like
[01:05:07] if you
[01:05:07] if you
[01:05:08] ever watch
[01:05:08] the video
[01:05:09] for all
[01:05:09] I want
[01:05:10] for Christmas
[01:05:10] they are
[01:05:11] clearly
[01:05:11] taking
[01:05:12] the mick
[01:05:12] out of
[01:05:13] that
[01:05:13] in a
[01:05:13] huge
[01:05:14] way
[01:05:14] with a
[01:05:14] coughing
[01:05:15] in the
[01:05:16] fake
[01:05:16] snow
[01:05:17] and yeah
[01:05:18] that
[01:05:18] made me
[01:05:20] laugh
[01:05:21] yeah
[01:05:22] and also
[01:05:23] they come
[01:05:24] back to
[01:05:25] Mariah Carey
[01:05:26] later on
[01:05:27] in the
[01:05:27] VH1 special
[01:05:28] she stole
[01:05:30] Mariah Carey's
[01:05:31] dress
[01:05:31] she had to
[01:05:32] go on stage
[01:05:32] in her
[01:05:33] underwear
[01:05:33] not that
[01:05:35] you could
[01:05:35] tell the
[01:05:37] difference
[01:05:38] yeah
[01:05:41] one thing
[01:05:42] I like
[01:05:42] about this
[01:05:42] twist too
[01:05:43] is that
[01:05:43] they
[01:05:44] they talk
[01:05:45] about how
[01:05:46] Christmas
[01:05:46] is actually
[01:05:47] a really
[01:05:47] commercial
[01:05:48] holiday
[01:05:48] so
[01:05:49] you know
[01:05:49] it's not
[01:05:50] Scrooge
[01:05:50] I'm going
[01:05:51] to ignore
[01:05:51] Christmas
[01:05:52] it's
[01:05:52] Scrooge
[01:05:53] I'm going
[01:05:53] to use
[01:05:54] Christmas
[01:05:55] to milk
[01:05:56] some money
[01:05:56] because it's
[01:05:57] a really
[01:05:57] lucrative
[01:05:57] time of
[01:05:58] year
[01:05:58] so that's
[01:05:59] why she
[01:05:59] forces people
[01:06:00] to work
[01:06:00] on Christmas
[01:06:02] but is she
[01:06:03] the first
[01:06:04] Scrooge
[01:06:04] we've seen
[01:06:05] who's actually
[01:06:05] being embezzled
[01:06:06] from
[01:06:06] yes
[01:06:07] I mean
[01:06:08] this is
[01:06:08] the thing
[01:06:09] like
[01:06:11] obviously
[01:06:11] it's mean
[01:06:12] to make
[01:06:12] people
[01:06:13] work
[01:06:13] Christmas
[01:06:13] and you
[01:06:14] shouldn't
[01:06:14] do it
[01:06:15] but in
[01:06:15] some ways
[01:06:16] this version
[01:06:17] of Scrooge
[01:06:17] is sympathetic
[01:06:18] because this
[01:06:18] version of Scrooge
[01:06:19] is having
[01:06:19] financial problems
[01:06:21] right
[01:06:22] like yeah
[01:06:23] and she
[01:06:24] apparently
[01:06:25] doesn't look
[01:06:25] twice
[01:06:26] at her
[01:06:26] own
[01:06:26] accounting
[01:06:27] because
[01:06:27] she's
[01:06:27] like
[01:06:28] the
[01:06:28] accountant
[01:06:28] says
[01:06:29] that
[01:06:29] all this
[01:06:30] money
[01:06:30] we make
[01:06:30] disappears
[01:06:31] it turns
[01:06:32] out her
[01:06:33] accountant
[01:06:33] is stealing
[01:06:34] from her
[01:06:34] yeah
[01:06:35] it's
[01:06:35] disappearing
[01:06:35] into his
[01:06:36] pocket
[01:06:37] um
[01:06:38] but I do
[01:06:39] like the
[01:06:39] fact
[01:06:39] that
[01:06:40] like
[01:06:40] she
[01:06:40] stays
[01:06:41] in all
[01:06:41] the
[01:06:41] luxury
[01:06:42] hotels
[01:06:42] and by
[01:06:43] the way
[01:06:43] I would
[01:06:45] not want
[01:06:45] to stay
[01:06:45] in that
[01:06:46] hotel
[01:06:46] I'd be
[01:06:47] I'd be
[01:06:47] terrified
[01:06:47] of breaking
[01:06:48] something
[01:06:49] like the
[01:06:49] room is
[01:06:50] filled
[01:06:51] with
[01:06:52] antiques
[01:06:53] and stuff
[01:06:54] or
[01:06:55] antiques
[01:06:56] and inverted
[01:06:56] commas
[01:06:57] it's like
[01:06:57] I'd be
[01:06:58] afraid of
[01:06:58] breaking
[01:06:58] something
[01:06:59] um
[01:07:00] yeah I
[01:07:01] mean the
[01:07:01] big
[01:07:02] changes
[01:07:02] that
[01:07:03] Scrooge
[01:07:03] and
[01:07:03] Cratchit
[01:07:04] have a
[01:07:04] romantic
[01:07:05] history
[01:07:05] which
[01:07:06] right
[01:07:06] yeah
[01:07:07] no
[01:07:08] right
[01:07:08] so Bob
[01:07:09] is also
[01:07:10] Belle
[01:07:10] but
[01:07:11] and he's
[01:07:12] also
[01:07:12] married
[01:07:13] but then
[01:07:13] I'm also
[01:07:14] there's some
[01:07:15] point where
[01:07:15] he's like
[01:07:16] rubbing her
[01:07:16] shoulders
[01:07:16] I'm like
[01:07:17] wait a
[01:07:17] minute
[01:07:17] is he still
[01:07:18] trying to
[01:07:18] get with her
[01:07:19] because he
[01:07:19] is like
[01:07:20] he's also
[01:07:20] calling on
[01:07:21] the phone
[01:07:21] with his
[01:07:21] wife
[01:07:22] Kelly
[01:07:22] and I
[01:07:23] feel like
[01:07:23] Kelly
[01:07:24] doesn't
[01:07:24] deserve
[01:07:24] this
[01:07:25] and they
[01:07:25] do
[01:07:25] have a
[01:07:25] sick
[01:07:26] son
[01:07:26] named
[01:07:26] Tim
[01:07:27] and yeah
[01:07:28] and like
[01:07:29] marital
[01:07:29] problem
[01:07:29] and this
[01:07:30] is the
[01:07:30] thing
[01:07:31] that
[01:07:31] this
[01:07:31] film
[01:07:32] has a
[01:07:32] real
[01:07:32] um
[01:07:33] like
[01:07:34] tonal
[01:07:35] problem
[01:07:36] because
[01:07:36] it
[01:07:37] shifts
[01:07:38] really
[01:07:39] drastically
[01:07:40] at points
[01:07:40] from being
[01:07:41] this quite
[01:07:42] light-hearted
[01:07:43] knockabout
[01:07:45] um
[01:07:45] VH1
[01:07:47] film
[01:07:47] to all of
[01:07:48] a sudden
[01:07:48] going
[01:07:48] really
[01:07:53] problems
[01:07:54] uh
[01:07:54] the
[01:07:55] ghost
[01:07:55] of
[01:07:55] christmas
[01:07:56] past
[01:07:56] ebony
[01:07:57] and her
[01:07:57] sister
[01:07:58] are um
[01:07:59] placed in
[01:08:00] foster care
[01:08:01] because
[01:08:02] their dad
[01:08:03] is an
[01:08:04] alcoholic
[01:08:04] right
[01:08:05] and like
[01:08:05] I get
[01:08:07] that that's
[01:08:07] an updating
[01:08:08] of
[01:08:08] the
[01:08:09] the
[01:08:10] ghost
[01:08:11] of
[01:08:11] christmas
[01:08:11] past
[01:08:12] but it
[01:08:12] is
[01:08:13] way
[01:08:13] way
[01:08:14] darker
[01:08:14] in tone
[01:08:15] than the
[01:08:16] rest
[01:08:16] of the
[01:08:16] film
[01:08:16] it's
[01:08:17] like
[01:08:18] that
[01:08:19] came
[01:08:19] out
[01:08:19] of
[01:08:19] left
[01:08:19] field
[01:08:20] that
[01:08:20] feels
[01:08:21] like
[01:08:22] he
[01:08:22] should
[01:08:22] be
[01:08:22] in a
[01:08:22] different
[01:08:23] movie
[01:08:24] well maybe
[01:08:24] I like
[01:08:25] that about
[01:08:25] it
[01:08:25] that it
[01:08:26] feels
[01:08:26] more
[01:08:27] grounded
[01:08:27] like
[01:08:28] you can
[01:08:28] be
[01:08:28] silly
[01:08:28] and also
[01:08:29] serious
[01:08:29] at the
[01:08:29] same
[01:08:30] time
[01:08:30] and those
[01:08:30] are my
[01:08:30] favorite
[01:08:31] types
[01:08:31] of
[01:08:31] films
[01:08:31] yeah
[01:08:32] yeah
[01:08:33] but also
[01:08:34] um
[01:08:35] there is a
[01:08:36] scene
[01:08:36] obviously
[01:08:36] um
[01:08:37] when she's
[01:08:37] in the
[01:08:37] hotel
[01:08:38] where
[01:08:38] um
[01:08:39] she's
[01:08:40] mixing
[01:08:40] i think
[01:08:41] sleeping
[01:08:41] pills
[01:08:42] and
[01:08:42] alcohol
[01:08:43] um
[01:08:43] which is
[01:08:44] not a
[01:08:45] good
[01:08:45] which is
[01:08:45] not
[01:08:45] a
[01:08:46] good
[01:08:46] idea
[01:08:46] by the
[01:08:46] way
[01:08:47] um
[01:08:48] and
[01:08:48] yeah
[01:08:49] so there's
[01:08:49] a whole
[01:08:50] riff
[01:08:50] throughout
[01:08:51] the film
[01:08:51] that she's
[01:08:52] hallucinating
[01:08:52] and she
[01:08:53] may well
[01:08:53] she may
[01:08:54] actually
[01:08:54] well be
[01:08:55] hallucinating
[01:08:56] yeah
[01:08:56] yeah
[01:08:58] well so
[01:08:58] one twist
[01:08:59] we have to
[01:08:59] talk about
[01:09:00] is that
[01:09:00] she had
[01:09:01] two best
[01:09:02] friends
[01:09:02] growing up
[01:09:03] um
[01:09:04] she had
[01:09:05] she had
[01:09:06] marley
[01:09:07] m-a-r-l-i
[01:09:09] and this
[01:09:09] ends up
[01:09:10] being the
[01:09:10] one who
[01:09:10] plays
[01:09:11] the
[01:09:11] marley
[01:09:11] ghost
[01:09:12] role
[01:09:12] later
[01:09:13] on
[01:09:13] when she
[01:09:13] died
[01:09:13] in a
[01:09:14] car
[01:09:14] accident
[01:09:14] 10
[01:09:14] years
[01:09:15] ago
[01:09:15] not
[01:09:15] seven
[01:09:15] um
[01:09:16] and then
[01:09:16] the other
[01:09:17] friend
[01:09:17] was
[01:09:18] terry
[01:09:18] who
[01:09:20] terry
[01:09:20] is
[01:09:20] kind
[01:09:21] of
[01:09:21] like
[01:09:21] we
[01:09:21] have
[01:09:22] a
[01:09:22] tim
[01:09:22] who's
[01:09:22] sick
[01:09:23] but also
[01:09:23] terry
[01:09:24] is
[01:09:24] sick
[01:09:25] so
[01:09:25] terry
[01:09:26] is
[01:09:26] also
[01:09:26] tiny
[01:09:26] tim
[01:09:27] but
[01:09:39] other
[01:09:39] tony
[01:09:39] died
[01:09:40] so
[01:09:40] okay
[01:09:40] it is
[01:09:41] actually
[01:09:41] it's
[01:09:42] it's
[01:09:43] quite
[01:09:43] faithful
[01:09:43] but also
[01:09:44] like
[01:09:44] doing
[01:09:44] some
[01:09:45] twists
[01:09:45] that we
[01:09:46] don't
[01:09:46] see
[01:09:46] in any
[01:09:46] other
[01:09:47] adaptations
[01:09:48] yeah
[01:09:48] and by
[01:09:49] the way
[01:09:50] chili
[01:09:50] from
[01:09:50] tlc
[01:09:51] is
[01:09:51] playing
[01:09:51] marley
[01:09:52] right
[01:09:53] it's
[01:09:53] the
[01:09:53] she
[01:09:55] walks
[01:09:56] in
[01:09:56] in
[01:09:56] this
[01:09:56] kind
[01:09:57] of
[01:09:57] sort
[01:09:58] of
[01:09:59] slightly
[01:09:59] faux
[01:10:00] bondage
[01:10:00] outfit
[01:10:00] and there's
[01:10:01] this great
[01:10:01] line
[01:10:01] i thought
[01:10:02] the chains
[01:10:03] went when
[01:10:03] you broke
[01:10:03] up with
[01:10:04] that guy
[01:10:04] from
[01:10:04] piramide
[01:10:06] i liked
[01:10:07] you
[01:10:07] that she
[01:10:07] has the
[01:10:08] chains
[01:10:09] but it's
[01:10:09] a nod
[01:10:09] it's a
[01:10:10] fashion
[01:10:10] accessory
[01:10:10] but
[01:10:11] it is
[01:10:11] yeah
[01:10:12] and she
[01:10:13] she pops
[01:10:13] off her
[01:10:14] head
[01:10:14] instead
[01:10:14] of her
[01:10:15] jaw
[01:10:15] and she
[01:10:15] pops
[01:10:16] off her
[01:10:16] face
[01:10:16] at one
[01:10:17] point
[01:10:17] she's
[01:10:17] like
[01:10:17] this
[01:10:17] is
[01:10:17] what
[01:10:17] i
[01:10:17] really
[01:10:18] look
[01:10:18] like
[01:10:18] yeah
[01:10:20] yeah
[01:10:21] um
[01:10:21] but we
[01:10:22] do
[01:10:22] get
[01:10:22] you know
[01:10:23] so we
[01:10:23] we
[01:10:23] have
[01:10:24] ebony
[01:10:25] celebrating
[01:10:26] christmas
[01:10:26] in new
[01:10:26] york
[01:10:27] in her
[01:10:27] fancy
[01:10:27] hotel
[01:10:28] room
[01:10:28] while
[01:10:28] the rest
[01:10:28] of
[01:10:29] of her
[01:10:29] crew
[01:10:30] is staying
[01:10:30] in some
[01:10:31] crap
[01:10:31] hotel
[01:10:31] and um
[01:10:32] she says
[01:10:33] yeah she
[01:10:34] does say
[01:10:35] the thing
[01:10:35] like homeless
[01:10:36] the homeless
[01:10:36] might be better
[01:10:37] off if they
[01:10:37] died versus
[01:10:38] living in the
[01:10:38] rat hole
[01:10:39] shelters
[01:10:39] if the
[01:10:40] shelters
[01:10:40] are so
[01:10:40] awful
[01:10:41] like damn
[01:10:42] that's
[01:10:43] very scroge
[01:10:43] uh
[01:10:44] we see
[01:10:45] the face
[01:10:45] in the
[01:10:46] hotel
[01:10:46] historical
[01:10:47] portrait
[01:10:47] instead of
[01:10:48] the door
[01:10:48] knocker
[01:10:49] and we
[01:10:50] see she
[01:10:50] does have
[01:10:50] a lonely
[01:10:51] diner
[01:10:51] but it's
[01:10:52] a lonely
[01:10:52] and very
[01:10:53] picky
[01:10:53] room service
[01:10:54] dinner
[01:10:54] like if
[01:10:55] she's treating
[01:10:55] people like
[01:10:56] that how
[01:10:56] much spit
[01:10:57] do you
[01:10:58] think she
[01:10:58] consumes
[01:10:59] lots
[01:10:59] on a
[01:10:59] monthly
[01:11:00] basis
[01:11:00] lots
[01:11:00] of spit
[01:11:02] she was so
[01:11:03] obnoxious
[01:11:06] oh what did
[01:11:07] you think of
[01:11:08] Kathy Griffin
[01:11:08] as the ghost
[01:11:09] of Christmas
[01:11:09] past
[01:11:11] it didn't
[01:11:12] like it
[01:11:13] wasn't like
[01:11:13] Kathy Griffin
[01:11:14] isn't really
[01:11:15] a not
[01:11:16] somebody I'm
[01:11:16] familiar with
[01:11:17] oh no
[01:11:18] um to be
[01:11:19] honest so
[01:11:20] yeah I
[01:11:20] thought I
[01:11:21] thought that
[01:11:22] bit was
[01:11:22] fine I
[01:11:23] enjoyed I
[01:11:24] enjoyed the
[01:11:25] whole movie
[01:11:25] and like
[01:11:27] I say it
[01:11:27] was it
[01:11:27] was the
[01:11:27] ghost of
[01:11:28] Christmas
[01:11:28] yet to
[01:11:28] come
[01:11:30] yeah
[01:11:30] that absolutely
[01:11:31] cracked me
[01:11:33] up
[01:11:34] um so
[01:11:35] Kathy Griffin
[01:11:35] is someone
[01:11:36] who I grew
[01:11:37] up watching
[01:11:37] and I always
[01:11:38] quite liked
[01:11:38] her but in
[01:11:39] this I
[01:11:39] don't know
[01:11:40] I just it
[01:11:41] didn't really
[01:11:41] work for me
[01:11:42] so much I
[01:11:42] didn't there
[01:11:43] was one line
[01:11:44] that really
[01:11:44] made me laugh
[01:11:45] was which was
[01:11:45] when she was
[01:11:46] like Ebony
[01:11:47] says stop
[01:11:48] haunting me
[01:11:49] and the ghost
[01:11:49] says stop
[01:11:50] being so
[01:11:50] hauntable
[01:11:54] but it is
[01:11:56] noticeable
[01:11:56] Ebony had a
[01:11:57] good childhood
[01:11:57] with two
[01:11:58] best friends
[01:11:58] although she
[01:11:59] stayed behind
[01:11:59] at school to
[01:12:00] practice singing
[01:12:01] it was her
[01:12:01] choice to stay
[01:12:02] behind wasn't
[01:12:03] really that she
[01:12:03] was left
[01:12:04] behind but
[01:12:05] she did have
[01:12:05] that especially
[01:12:06] mean dad
[01:12:07] what did you
[01:12:08] think of the
[01:12:09] the ghost of
[01:12:09] Christmas present
[01:12:10] was a British
[01:12:11] rock star
[01:12:11] complete with
[01:12:12] groupies
[01:12:13] yeah I
[01:12:13] could do
[01:12:14] without the
[01:12:14] ghost of
[01:12:15] Christmas present
[01:12:16] to be honest
[01:12:17] yeah I mean
[01:12:18] I like the
[01:12:19] idea more
[01:12:20] than I liked
[01:12:20] the execution
[01:12:21] of it
[01:12:22] but it made
[01:12:23] sense you know
[01:12:23] it's a different
[01:12:24] sort of indulgence
[01:12:25] decadence you
[01:12:26] know I think
[01:12:27] that's right
[01:12:27] yeah
[01:12:27] yeah
[01:12:29] um
[01:12:29] it's just not
[01:12:30] very Christmassy
[01:12:31] is it
[01:12:31] yeah
[01:12:33] yeah well
[01:12:34] it's not
[01:12:34] that's not the
[01:12:35] problem it's
[01:12:36] just the I
[01:12:36] think the it
[01:12:37] felt a little
[01:12:37] icky to me
[01:12:38] yeah and
[01:12:39] also like
[01:12:41] you know
[01:12:42] I think you
[01:12:43] said in your
[01:12:43] review a bit
[01:12:44] of wooden
[01:12:44] acting and I
[01:12:45] think the ghost
[01:12:46] of Christmas
[01:12:47] present definitely
[01:12:47] falls into that
[01:12:48] category
[01:12:49] for sure
[01:12:50] for sure
[01:12:51] but yeah
[01:12:52] this is where
[01:12:52] she sees like
[01:12:53] the hotel
[01:12:55] where the crew
[01:12:55] is staying
[01:12:55] she didn't
[01:12:56] realize it
[01:12:56] was a dump
[01:12:57] she didn't
[01:12:57] care of
[01:12:58] course
[01:12:58] um
[01:12:59] and we got
[01:13:00] there's a new
[01:13:01] girl also who's
[01:13:02] joined the crew
[01:13:03] who's she
[01:13:04] gives the
[01:13:04] tiny Tim line
[01:13:05] about god bless
[01:13:06] us everyone
[01:13:07] and uh
[01:13:08] she's she's
[01:13:09] really positive
[01:13:10] but it's because
[01:13:11] she's fresh
[01:13:12] and she hasn't
[01:13:12] had to endure
[01:13:13] anything yet
[01:13:14] we see her in
[01:13:15] the VH1 thing
[01:13:15] though where she
[01:13:16] gets kind of
[01:13:17] more cynical
[01:13:18] and jaded
[01:13:18] but when they
[01:13:19] when they go in
[01:13:20] the really nasty
[01:13:20] hotel it's like
[01:13:21] they've got a
[01:13:22] fridge and then
[01:13:23] she opens the
[01:13:23] fridge and it's
[01:13:24] the nasty
[01:13:24] awful like
[01:13:26] inside of a
[01:13:27] fridge
[01:13:27] oh it's just
[01:13:28] like frozen
[01:13:29] solid ice
[01:13:30] so you can't
[01:13:30] fit anything in
[01:13:31] there
[01:13:31] yeah
[01:13:34] and you know
[01:13:35] there's the bit
[01:13:35] in the books
[01:13:36] where the people
[01:13:37] are stealing
[01:13:37] Scrooge's stuff
[01:13:38] at the end
[01:13:38] well now we
[01:13:39] have her
[01:13:39] accountant
[01:13:39] is still
[01:13:40] is stealing
[01:13:41] her stuff
[01:13:41] while she's
[01:13:41] still alive
[01:13:42] yes
[01:13:44] they do go
[01:13:45] to a soup
[01:13:45] kitchen
[01:13:46] which is
[01:13:47] uh
[01:13:47] the it's
[01:13:48] rare that
[01:13:48] the christmas
[01:13:49] present part
[01:13:50] of these
[01:13:50] adaptations
[01:13:51] visits the
[01:13:52] poor
[01:13:52] which is
[01:13:52] like
[01:13:53] that's one
[01:13:53] of the
[01:13:53] parts of
[01:13:54] the book
[01:13:54] is they
[01:13:54] go around
[01:13:55] to a lot
[01:13:55] of the
[01:13:55] random
[01:13:56] poor
[01:13:56] people
[01:13:57] for as you
[01:13:57] pointed out
[01:13:58] what like
[01:13:58] a fortnight
[01:13:59] or no
[01:13:59] like 12
[01:13:59] days
[01:14:01] um
[01:14:01] yeah
[01:14:01] and then
[01:14:03] yeah
[01:14:03] her niece's
[01:14:03] party at
[01:14:04] the charades
[01:14:04] very classic
[01:14:05] stuff
[01:14:06] um
[01:14:06] and the
[01:14:06] present's
[01:14:07] parting words
[01:14:08] is two
[01:14:08] killers
[01:14:08] ignorance
[01:14:09] and greed
[01:14:10] keep your
[01:14:10] eye out
[01:14:11] for them
[01:14:11] and runs
[01:14:12] away
[01:14:12] so that's
[01:14:13] awesome
[01:14:14] not right
[01:14:15] from the
[01:14:15] book but
[01:14:16] like an
[01:14:16] update of
[01:14:16] the book
[01:14:17] yeah
[01:14:17] yeah
[01:14:17] you know
[01:14:19] i love
[01:14:19] the behind
[01:14:20] the music
[01:14:21] that they
[01:14:21] interviewed
[01:14:22] her but
[01:14:22] they wouldn't
[01:14:23] air the
[01:14:23] footage
[01:14:25] ouch
[01:14:27] um
[01:14:27] it this
[01:14:28] it is
[01:14:28] different in
[01:14:29] she knows
[01:14:29] it's her
[01:14:30] own death
[01:14:31] right away
[01:14:31] usually scourge
[01:14:32] doesn't
[01:14:33] is like in
[01:14:33] denial it's
[01:14:34] about his
[01:14:34] death
[01:14:34] yeah
[01:14:35] trapped in
[01:14:36] her room
[01:14:37] there's no
[01:14:37] visible ghost
[01:14:38] it's just the
[01:14:39] tvs you say
[01:14:39] and her diary
[01:14:41] was sold
[01:14:41] that is the
[01:14:42] worst
[01:14:42] that is way
[01:14:43] worse than
[01:14:44] having your
[01:14:44] bed curtain
[01:14:45] stolen
[01:14:46] but then yeah
[01:14:47] there's a
[01:14:47] light from the
[01:14:48] bed that you
[01:14:49] see that
[01:14:49] decaying body
[01:14:50] like whoa
[01:14:51] i didn't expect
[01:14:51] them to go
[01:14:52] full body
[01:14:52] horror there
[01:14:53] and then she
[01:14:53] sucked into
[01:14:54] the tv
[01:14:54] yeah look
[01:14:55] this is the
[01:14:56] thing it
[01:14:57] like i said
[01:14:58] before it's
[01:14:58] this really
[01:14:59] light fluffy
[01:15:01] um movie
[01:15:02] with a lot
[01:15:03] of with a
[01:15:03] lot of sort
[01:15:04] of you know
[01:15:05] a lot of
[01:15:05] sort of
[01:15:06] good sort
[01:15:07] of knock
[01:15:07] about um
[01:15:08] sort of
[01:15:09] verbal jokes
[01:15:10] and it all
[01:15:11] feels quite
[01:15:11] sort of light
[01:15:12] and insignificant
[01:15:13] and then all of
[01:15:14] a sudden
[01:15:14] every so often
[01:15:15] it will take
[01:15:15] these really
[01:15:16] violent swerves
[01:15:17] into wow
[01:15:19] that's much
[01:15:19] darker than i
[01:15:20] was
[01:15:20] that's much
[01:15:21] darker than i
[01:15:22] was expecting
[01:15:22] i think that's
[01:15:23] why i like it
[01:15:23] does keep you
[01:15:24] on your toes
[01:15:25] yeah
[01:15:27] yeah so
[01:15:28] okay so the
[01:15:28] happy ending
[01:15:29] that we get
[01:15:30] is well she
[01:15:31] calls out to
[01:15:31] boy and it's
[01:15:32] a carriage driver
[01:15:33] and he's like
[01:15:33] who you call
[01:15:34] him boy
[01:15:35] sorry i
[01:15:35] haven't got
[01:15:36] my glasses
[01:15:37] um but she
[01:15:38] calls kelly
[01:15:39] bob's wife to
[01:15:40] do some things
[01:15:41] for her and
[01:15:42] asks bob not
[01:15:43] to get on the
[01:15:43] plane which
[01:15:44] why would he
[01:15:44] not says
[01:15:45] mary uh
[01:15:46] says mary
[01:15:47] christmas and
[01:15:47] he's like
[01:15:48] thanks it's
[01:15:48] sarcastic and
[01:15:49] bob's plane is
[01:15:50] luckily delayed
[01:15:51] because he was
[01:15:52] not going to
[01:15:52] listen to her
[01:15:53] and meanwhile
[01:15:54] while she's
[01:15:55] like it's oh
[01:15:55] we have to
[01:15:56] make sure he
[01:15:56] doesn't go on
[01:15:57] the plane but
[01:15:58] i'll just tell
[01:15:59] him not to and
[01:16:00] then i'm gonna
[01:16:00] go to my am
[01:16:01] america appearance
[01:16:04] and she's
[01:16:05] sending cds to
[01:16:06] children's hospitals
[01:16:07] wants to do
[01:16:08] more desperately
[01:16:09] seeking ideas
[01:16:10] that was nice
[01:16:11] she's like no
[01:16:11] really no
[01:16:12] genuinely i
[01:16:13] want ideas
[01:16:13] and they're
[01:16:14] like okay
[01:16:16] also love am
[01:16:17] america because
[01:16:18] we can't do
[01:16:18] good more
[01:16:19] we can't do
[01:16:20] good morning
[01:16:20] right
[01:16:22] close enough
[01:16:24] she ends up
[01:16:25] buying scalped
[01:16:26] tickets to her
[01:16:26] own concert
[01:16:27] so that uh
[01:16:28] her crew can
[01:16:29] have their
[01:16:29] family come
[01:16:30] and she calls
[01:16:31] in a fired
[01:16:32] chef so she
[01:16:33] had fired this
[01:16:34] chef and she
[01:16:35] calls him and
[01:16:36] she's like i
[01:16:36] want to rehire
[01:16:37] you tonight and
[01:16:38] make a turkey
[01:16:38] dinner for a
[01:16:39] hundred like way
[01:16:40] to ruin this
[01:16:40] guy's christmas
[01:16:43] he's probably had
[01:16:44] a nice christmas
[01:16:45] like if you want
[01:16:46] to be nice
[01:16:46] say come back
[01:16:48] next week
[01:16:48] yeah exactly
[01:16:51] and she does
[01:16:52] she goes to
[01:16:52] see her niece
[01:16:53] can't stay but
[01:16:54] maybe for one
[01:16:55] game of charades
[01:16:56] but then yeah
[01:16:57] christmas dinner
[01:16:58] while the concert
[01:16:59] is beginning
[01:17:00] and the backup
[01:17:01] singers are
[01:17:01] eating
[01:17:03] yeah like
[01:17:03] they're gonna go
[01:17:04] on stage and
[01:17:05] puke
[01:17:06] yeah can this
[01:17:07] not wait until
[01:17:07] after the show
[01:17:08] well it's really
[01:17:08] bad for the
[01:17:08] vocal cords
[01:17:09] yeah
[01:17:10] yeah
[01:17:11] but that stage
[01:17:12] was just gonna
[01:17:12] be a slicker
[01:17:13] vomit
[01:17:15] at least ernie's
[01:17:16] arrested
[01:17:18] ernie being the
[01:17:18] accountant
[01:17:19] yeah
[01:17:20] yeah
[01:17:22] and she says
[01:17:23] at the end
[01:17:23] sometimes all it
[01:17:24] takes is a
[01:17:25] night
[01:17:25] is a night
[01:17:27] of no sleep
[01:17:28] uh yeah
[01:17:29] not um
[01:17:30] not i think
[01:17:30] it's a night
[01:17:31] of like
[01:17:31] uh a night
[01:17:32] of like bad
[01:17:33] uh poor sleep
[01:17:34] bad sleep
[01:17:34] something
[01:17:35] no yeah
[01:17:36] she says
[01:17:37] something like
[01:17:37] sometimes all
[01:17:38] it takes is a
[01:17:39] is a night
[01:17:39] of no sleep
[01:17:40] to make your
[01:17:41] head straight
[01:17:41] everything seems
[01:17:42] clearer in the
[01:17:42] morning and
[01:17:43] say kids
[01:17:43] do not follow
[01:17:44] this advice
[01:17:45] this is so
[01:17:46] untrue
[01:17:47] sleep will always
[01:17:49] make it seem
[01:17:49] better in the
[01:17:50] morning
[01:17:51] oh but we
[01:17:52] get marley
[01:17:53] the ghost
[01:17:53] at the concert
[01:17:54] and she
[01:17:54] invites the
[01:17:55] live terry
[01:17:56] who looks
[01:17:56] like she's
[01:17:57] doing a little
[01:17:57] better to sing
[01:17:58] with her
[01:17:59] tim's already
[01:18:00] better a year
[01:18:00] later and
[01:18:01] everyone's
[01:18:01] together but
[01:18:02] no new love
[01:18:03] for ebony
[01:18:05] clearly not
[01:18:06] i kind of
[01:18:08] admire that about
[01:18:09] it but i'm also
[01:18:09] like oh vanessa
[01:18:11] williams deserves
[01:18:11] love
[01:18:13] i'm sure she's
[01:18:14] fine in real
[01:18:14] life
[01:18:14] yeah i'm sure
[01:18:15] i'm sure vanessa
[01:18:17] williams is doing
[01:18:17] fine
[01:18:20] any other
[01:18:21] thoughts on this
[01:18:21] one
[01:18:22] just i enjoyed
[01:18:23] the heck
[01:18:24] it's not the
[01:18:25] best it's not
[01:18:26] the best movie
[01:18:27] we looked at by
[01:18:28] any manner of
[01:18:29] means but i
[01:18:29] enjoyed the
[01:18:30] heck out of it
[01:18:31] yeah i recommend
[01:18:32] seeking it out
[01:18:33] there's basically
[01:18:34] like one place you
[01:18:35] can find it
[01:18:35] online i'll link
[01:18:36] that in the
[01:18:36] notes i don't
[01:18:37] know why it's
[01:18:38] so difficult to
[01:18:38] find because if
[01:18:40] you look up a
[01:18:41] christmas sorry a
[01:18:42] diva's christmas
[01:18:43] carol more
[01:18:44] often you're going
[01:18:46] to find the new
[01:18:46] one a new
[01:18:47] diva's christmas
[01:18:48] carol from
[01:18:49] 2022 so
[01:18:50] 22 years
[01:18:51] later and
[01:18:52] yes we
[01:18:53] watched this so
[01:18:53] that you don't
[01:18:54] have to unless
[01:18:55] you did in
[01:18:56] which case i'm
[01:18:56] sorry slash
[01:18:57] you're welcome
[01:18:58] this one's also
[01:18:59] a vh1 production
[01:19:00] this one by the
[01:19:02] way doesn't even
[01:19:02] have a wikipedia
[01:19:03] page out of all
[01:19:04] of the films that
[01:19:05] we've covered this
[01:19:06] is the only one
[01:19:06] that doesn't have
[01:19:07] a wikipedia page
[01:19:08] of its own
[01:19:08] somehow that feels
[01:19:09] right
[01:19:11] so the director
[01:19:13] is rusty
[01:19:14] kundeev who
[01:19:15] he also directed
[01:19:16] this year's meet
[01:19:17] me next christmas
[01:19:18] which is one of
[01:19:19] the new netflix
[01:19:19] ones this year
[01:19:20] the writer was
[01:19:22] idrea walden and
[01:19:24] it looks like she's
[01:19:25] otherwise done
[01:19:25] kid stuff i'm not
[01:19:26] familiar with um
[01:19:27] and scrooge is
[01:19:29] ashanti who's
[01:19:30] called aphrodite
[01:19:31] because this film
[01:19:33] missed the point
[01:19:34] about doing
[01:19:35] about doing puns
[01:19:37] on the original
[01:19:37] names
[01:19:38] i think i think
[01:19:39] this film missed
[01:19:40] the point
[01:19:41] yeah
[01:19:41] and punt
[01:19:43] yeah
[01:19:44] um and the
[01:19:46] movie also features
[01:19:46] we get a cameo
[01:19:47] from mel b
[01:19:48] we get uh
[01:19:49] vivica a fox
[01:19:50] and robin gibbons
[01:19:51] playing prominent
[01:19:53] roles as two of
[01:19:54] the spirits who
[01:19:55] will get into that
[01:19:56] whole thing but
[01:19:56] first let's check
[01:19:58] in on what you
[01:19:59] said after watching
[01:20:00] this for the first
[01:20:00] time
[01:20:01] so i've just
[01:20:02] finished watching
[01:20:03] the 2024 version
[01:20:04] of a diva's
[01:20:05] christmas carol
[01:20:06] this is the least
[01:20:08] faithful adaptation
[01:20:10] of all the ones
[01:20:11] i've watched
[01:20:12] um it's as if
[01:20:13] the writers
[01:20:15] have never read
[01:20:16] a christmas carol
[01:20:17] but they might
[01:20:18] just have glanced
[01:20:19] at a wikipedia
[01:20:20] entry for it
[01:20:22] um
[01:20:22] not even
[01:20:24] it's kind of a
[01:20:25] bit of a
[01:20:25] mere film
[01:20:27] it's got nowhere
[01:20:28] near the wit
[01:20:28] of the vanessa
[01:20:30] williams version
[01:20:31] um ashanti
[01:20:33] is
[01:20:34] i hate to say
[01:20:35] this but she's
[01:20:36] not a very good
[01:20:37] actor
[01:20:37] she doesn't have
[01:20:38] great screen
[01:20:39] presence
[01:20:39] it's a pretty
[01:20:41] incoherent movie
[01:20:42] um
[01:20:44] it's probably
[01:20:44] my
[01:20:45] it's probably
[01:20:46] my second
[01:20:47] least favorite
[01:20:48] after scrooged
[01:20:50] that we've
[01:20:51] watched
[01:20:51] it's
[01:20:52] it doesn't have
[01:20:53] the mean spiritedness
[01:20:54] of scrooge
[01:20:55] but it certainly
[01:20:56] has the
[01:20:56] incoherence
[01:20:57] um
[01:20:58] the plot
[01:20:59] is quite
[01:21:00] difficult to
[01:21:01] follow
[01:21:01] it has very
[01:21:03] little to do
[01:21:04] with christmas
[01:21:04] it is the
[01:21:05] least christmassy
[01:21:06] christmas movie
[01:21:07] i think i've
[01:21:08] ever seen
[01:21:09] like
[01:21:11] it could take
[01:21:12] place at any
[01:21:13] time of year
[01:21:14] christmas is
[01:21:15] entirely
[01:21:16] incidental to
[01:21:17] the plots
[01:21:22] yeah i mean
[01:21:23] this is being
[01:21:23] produced by
[01:21:24] idris elba
[01:21:25] and like
[01:21:27] i just hope
[01:21:28] idris produces
[01:21:29] better material
[01:21:30] in future
[01:21:31] because this
[01:21:31] is rubbish
[01:21:32] um it does
[01:21:33] have a nice
[01:21:34] cameo from
[01:21:34] melby
[01:21:35] it's always
[01:21:36] nice to see
[01:21:36] a spice girl
[01:21:37] doing well
[01:21:38] but yeah
[01:21:39] other than
[01:21:39] that i didn't
[01:21:40] enjoy this
[01:21:40] at all
[01:21:43] so in
[01:21:44] idris elba's
[01:21:44] defense he
[01:21:45] was an
[01:21:45] exec producer
[01:21:46] but the
[01:21:47] exec producer
[01:21:47] in charge of
[01:21:48] production was
[01:21:48] megan fillmore
[01:21:49] i looked that
[01:21:50] up but um
[01:21:51] i can see why
[01:21:52] they use
[01:21:52] idris elba's
[01:21:53] name
[01:21:54] yeah
[01:21:54] but
[01:21:56] yeah so
[01:21:57] here's a
[01:21:58] question is
[01:21:58] like so
[01:21:59] even leaving
[01:22:00] aside a
[01:22:00] christmas carol
[01:22:01] the novella
[01:22:02] and that
[01:22:02] story itself
[01:22:03] how much
[01:22:04] of a
[01:22:04] remake is
[01:22:05] this even
[01:22:05] of diva's
[01:22:06] christmas carol
[01:22:07] that we were
[01:22:07] just talking
[01:22:07] about
[01:22:08] not not
[01:22:09] not very
[01:22:09] and i mean
[01:22:11] i mean i think
[01:22:13] i was being a
[01:22:14] little bit harsh
[01:22:15] in that in
[01:22:16] that voice
[01:22:17] message
[01:22:17] because it's
[01:22:19] certainly like
[01:22:21] like i said
[01:22:22] it's not
[01:22:23] got the
[01:22:24] the meanness
[01:22:25] of scrooged
[01:22:26] um
[01:22:27] it just felt
[01:22:29] kind of
[01:22:30] pointless
[01:22:30] i don't
[01:22:31] know
[01:22:32] i don't
[01:22:33] know why
[01:22:34] this film
[01:22:34] exists
[01:22:35] i don't know
[01:22:36] like who is
[01:22:37] this film
[01:22:37] for what
[01:22:38] what's its
[01:22:39] audience
[01:22:40] who is this
[01:22:41] who is this
[01:22:42] meant to appeal
[01:22:42] to because
[01:22:44] it's it's
[01:22:45] sort of too
[01:22:46] a shorty
[01:22:47] fans i guess
[01:22:48] yeah it's
[01:22:48] too adult
[01:22:49] themed to
[01:22:49] be a
[01:22:50] kids movie
[01:22:50] it's too
[01:22:52] um it's
[01:22:54] too sort
[01:22:55] of juvenile
[01:22:56] to be a
[01:22:57] movie for
[01:22:59] adults i think
[01:23:00] it's yeah
[01:23:01] i don't know
[01:23:02] what its
[01:23:02] audience is
[01:23:03] supposed to
[01:23:03] be
[01:23:03] hmm
[01:23:05] yeah so
[01:23:06] i also
[01:23:07] wasn't terribly
[01:23:08] kind to it
[01:23:09] um i gave
[01:23:10] it a 1.5
[01:23:11] stars on
[01:23:11] letterboxd
[01:23:12] out of
[01:23:12] five i
[01:23:13] said i
[01:23:13] didn't hate
[01:23:13] this however
[01:23:14] bad the
[01:23:14] writing and
[01:23:15] acting was
[01:23:16] but it
[01:23:16] in no way
[01:23:17] lives up to
[01:23:17] the 2000
[01:23:18] film after
[01:23:18] which it's
[01:23:19] named there
[01:23:20] are nods to
[01:23:21] that film and
[01:23:21] even bearer ones
[01:23:22] to a christmas
[01:23:23] carol but the
[01:23:24] writers of this
[01:23:25] movie have
[01:23:25] clearly never
[01:23:26] had an interest
[01:23:27] in reading
[01:23:27] dickens novella
[01:23:28] so yeah it's
[01:23:30] really silly and
[01:23:31] made me smile
[01:23:32] every now and
[01:23:33] then but i
[01:23:33] almost feel like
[01:23:34] i need to
[01:23:34] re-watch the
[01:23:35] vanessa williams
[01:23:36] movie again to
[01:23:37] scrub this one
[01:23:37] out of my
[01:23:38] head but i
[01:23:39] won't because
[01:23:40] i'm free that's
[01:23:41] the end of my
[01:23:41] christmas carol
[01:23:41] watch project
[01:23:42] now to finish
[01:23:43] watching now to
[01:23:44] finish producing
[01:23:44] the podcast
[01:23:45] episode
[01:23:45] so this was
[01:23:46] my final film
[01:23:47] that i watched
[01:23:48] i went out
[01:23:48] on a low
[01:23:49] yeah but
[01:23:51] yeah it's
[01:23:52] it's a very
[01:23:53] mtv vh1
[01:23:55] production
[01:23:55] vashanti is
[01:23:57] aphrodite
[01:23:57] she's a total
[01:23:58] bitch she
[01:23:59] hates her
[01:24:00] uh she has
[01:24:02] this song
[01:24:03] called shine
[01:24:03] or whatever and
[01:24:04] she hates it
[01:24:05] and she's now
[01:24:06] become this
[01:24:07] simon cowell
[01:24:08] like judge
[01:24:08] on a
[01:24:09] um reality
[01:24:11] competition show
[01:24:12] called pop
[01:24:12] pop the
[01:24:12] question
[01:24:14] yeah
[01:24:14] and they're
[01:24:15] putting on a
[01:24:15] christmas show
[01:24:17] and her poor
[01:24:18] assistant i felt
[01:24:19] bad for her
[01:24:20] assistant who it
[01:24:21] turns out is like
[01:24:21] her best friend
[01:24:22] from growing up
[01:24:23] femi um and
[01:24:24] she's like following
[01:24:25] aphrodite around
[01:24:26] trying to make
[01:24:27] nice with the
[01:24:28] people that
[01:24:29] aphrodite is
[01:24:29] mean to
[01:24:31] she's really
[01:24:31] i had no idea
[01:24:32] that they were
[01:24:33] best friends
[01:24:33] from childhood
[01:24:34] like oh
[01:24:35] yeah they
[01:24:35] said that
[01:24:35] completely
[01:24:36] passed me
[01:24:36] by
[01:24:38] for a minute
[01:24:38] i thought they
[01:24:39] were like
[01:24:39] sisters because
[01:24:40] they showed
[01:24:40] them together
[01:24:40] as children
[01:24:41] but then
[01:24:41] no okay
[01:24:42] it's her
[01:24:42] best friend
[01:24:42] yeah
[01:24:44] and then
[01:24:45] so there's
[01:24:45] this contestant
[01:24:46] on the show
[01:24:47] named brianna
[01:24:48] mccallister
[01:24:49] who also has
[01:24:50] a girlfriend
[01:24:50] named kira
[01:24:51] and kira
[01:24:51] is definitely
[01:24:52] the tiny tim
[01:24:53] of this film
[01:24:54] and then we
[01:24:55] also find out
[01:24:55] aphrodite is
[01:24:56] waiting for a
[01:24:57] message from a
[01:24:57] guy so this
[01:24:58] is another one
[01:24:58] you need to be
[01:24:59] so this is
[01:25:00] the vanessa
[01:25:00] williams is
[01:25:01] one is in
[01:25:02] contrast to
[01:25:02] this where
[01:25:03] she ended
[01:25:03] up her happy
[01:25:04] ending was
[01:25:05] just her
[01:25:05] making other
[01:25:06] people happy
[01:25:06] which is
[01:25:07] more scrooge
[01:25:08] and this
[01:25:09] one you know
[01:25:10] she's got to
[01:25:11] be with the
[01:25:11] guy or
[01:25:13] yeah not a
[01:25:14] happy ending
[01:25:15] yeah nice
[01:25:16] mel b cameo
[01:25:16] she was a tv
[01:25:17] host which
[01:25:19] makes sense
[01:25:21] and yeah
[01:25:22] ashanti's
[01:25:23] very bitchy
[01:25:24] no hugs
[01:25:24] gotta fix
[01:25:25] this set
[01:25:25] um we see
[01:25:26] three balls
[01:25:27] of there's
[01:25:27] some just
[01:25:27] wild set
[01:25:29] pieces in
[01:25:29] here like
[01:25:30] there's three
[01:25:30] balls of light
[01:25:31] scouting her
[01:25:31] for the haunt
[01:25:32] and then she
[01:25:32] gets caught
[01:25:33] in a giant
[01:25:34] snow globe
[01:25:34] like it's
[01:25:36] so random
[01:25:38] um and then
[01:25:39] the three diva
[01:25:40] spirits they
[01:25:42] are they travel
[01:25:43] together and
[01:25:44] they are not
[01:25:44] at all the
[01:25:46] three spirits
[01:25:46] we're used to
[01:25:47] they're
[01:25:47] accessorized to
[01:25:48] the max by
[01:25:49] the way i
[01:25:50] used to be
[01:25:50] addicted to
[01:25:50] this fashion
[01:25:51] game called
[01:25:52] covet and
[01:25:53] it looks i
[01:25:54] recognize a
[01:25:54] lot of what
[01:25:55] they're wearing
[01:25:55] from covet by
[01:25:56] the way but
[01:25:56] um they
[01:25:58] they haunt
[01:25:59] together they're
[01:26:00] very nice and
[01:26:01] they have cheesy
[01:26:02] banter and
[01:26:03] their names are
[01:26:04] bastia the
[01:26:05] celestial spirit
[01:26:06] of truth
[01:26:07] sarah the
[01:26:08] celestial guide
[01:26:09] to compassion
[01:26:10] and zero
[01:26:11] celestial guide
[01:26:12] to service
[01:26:13] and together
[01:26:14] they make
[01:26:15] love what did
[01:26:17] you think of
[01:26:17] the three
[01:26:17] spirits even
[01:26:18] putting dickens
[01:26:19] we have to
[01:26:19] put dickens
[01:26:20] aside um
[01:26:23] yeah i mean
[01:26:24] it was it
[01:26:25] was it was
[01:26:26] it was fine
[01:26:27] it was fine
[01:26:29] it was it
[01:26:30] was it was
[01:26:31] they were nice
[01:26:31] yeah it was
[01:26:32] perfectly meh
[01:26:34] um yeah i
[01:26:37] mean i i
[01:26:38] really don't
[01:26:38] know what to
[01:26:38] say about this
[01:26:39] movie either in
[01:26:40] like its
[01:26:40] individual parts
[01:26:41] or as a whole
[01:26:43] because it just
[01:26:44] sort of it just
[01:26:45] sort of washed
[01:26:45] over me
[01:26:46] uh-huh i
[01:26:47] wasn't i
[01:26:48] wasn't offended
[01:26:48] by it i
[01:26:49] wasn't like
[01:26:50] angry with it
[01:26:51] i wasn't i
[01:26:53] wasn't anything
[01:26:54] with this film
[01:26:55] it just right
[01:26:56] it just sort of
[01:26:57] was i think
[01:27:00] the one of
[01:27:01] the most
[01:27:02] interesting
[01:27:02] relationships in
[01:27:03] this film was
[01:27:04] with her mean
[01:27:05] mommy who comes
[01:27:06] back in the end
[01:27:07] and and and
[01:27:08] and her mom
[01:27:08] still like doesn't
[01:27:10] get the redemption
[01:27:10] in the end but
[01:27:11] she realizes that
[01:27:12] she doesn't need
[01:27:13] her mom to be
[01:27:14] nice to her and
[01:27:15] that's that's a
[01:27:16] nice moment
[01:27:16] um i love the
[01:27:18] wild weird
[01:27:19] moments like their
[01:27:20] first stop in
[01:27:21] the past is pink
[01:27:21] fog like i don't
[01:27:22] know what we're
[01:27:23] doing okay and
[01:27:25] they also they're
[01:27:26] wearing the spirits
[01:27:27] are wearing all
[01:27:27] these bangle
[01:27:28] bracelets and
[01:27:29] they can pick one
[01:27:30] up and turn it
[01:27:31] into a viewing
[01:27:32] portal like that's
[01:27:33] cute yeah
[01:27:34] yeah bracelets
[01:27:36] they fall off and
[01:27:37] disappear because
[01:27:38] the three spirits
[01:27:39] are trying to get
[01:27:39] back to the
[01:27:40] pantheon but they
[01:27:41] have to redeem
[01:27:42] her in order to
[01:27:43] earn their ticket
[01:27:43] back like
[01:27:44] where the earth
[01:27:46] did that come
[01:27:47] from
[01:27:50] one thing i
[01:27:51] really object to
[01:27:52] though is that
[01:27:54] she's kind of
[01:27:55] in she's got this
[01:27:56] cliche it's not
[01:27:57] that she lost
[01:27:59] someone because
[01:28:00] of her drive for
[01:28:02] money or at least
[01:28:02] it's not just that
[01:28:03] she's got this
[01:28:04] cliche story of
[01:28:05] like being used and
[01:28:06] ditched by every
[01:28:07] guy so there's no
[01:28:08] real bell in her
[01:28:09] past and i don't
[01:28:10] think that bartender
[01:28:10] boyfriend is a
[01:28:11] bell either
[01:28:12] no so she hates
[01:28:14] that song shine so
[01:28:16] her new song is
[01:28:17] never shine again
[01:28:18] okay
[01:28:20] on the nose there
[01:28:21] and apparently
[01:28:24] the whole the evil
[01:28:26] thing she's doing
[01:28:26] is she's making
[01:28:27] this contestant
[01:28:29] um her protege
[01:28:30] she's making her
[01:28:32] sing never shine
[01:28:33] again instead of
[01:28:34] singing shine the
[01:28:35] happy song and this
[01:28:36] is not doing the
[01:28:37] right thing because
[01:28:38] people will be
[01:28:40] hate watching
[01:28:41] yeah but i mean
[01:28:43] i'm not alone in
[01:28:44] this like this is
[01:28:45] not a christmas movie
[01:28:46] there is nothing
[01:28:47] like it could
[01:28:49] it could have
[01:28:49] christmas trappings
[01:28:50] we get a talking
[01:28:51] tree
[01:28:52] yeah i
[01:28:54] yeah we do
[01:28:55] but like it just
[01:28:56] felt like this
[01:28:57] if you put aside
[01:28:59] from the fact they're
[01:29:00] doing a christmas
[01:29:01] special like you
[01:29:03] could be you you
[01:29:04] could you could set
[01:29:05] this movie in july
[01:29:06] and it would make
[01:29:08] no difference
[01:29:10] the way the movie
[01:29:12] plays out
[01:29:13] yeah
[01:29:14] yeah
[01:29:14] yeah
[01:29:16] um what did you
[01:29:17] think of the
[01:29:18] relationship with the
[01:29:19] bartender
[01:29:20] i'm sorry but i don't
[01:29:24] know who the the guy
[01:29:25] playing the bartender
[01:29:26] is
[01:29:26] but a shanty great
[01:29:29] singer
[01:29:31] actor
[01:29:31] actor
[01:29:35] we're gonna give
[01:29:35] it to her but
[01:29:36] i mean this is this
[01:29:38] is the thing i think
[01:29:39] she's because i
[01:29:40] watched i watched
[01:29:42] the two versions of
[01:29:43] the christmas diva
[01:29:44] back to back
[01:29:45] and like
[01:29:46] me too by the way
[01:29:48] yeah vanessa
[01:29:49] like
[01:29:50] vanessa williams may
[01:29:52] not have great range
[01:29:53] as an actor
[01:29:54] but she is an
[01:29:55] actor i think she's
[01:29:56] good
[01:29:57] yeah she can act
[01:29:58] whereas a shanty
[01:30:00] like i say great
[01:30:02] singer
[01:30:02] sure she's a lovely
[01:30:03] person
[01:30:04] but like
[01:30:05] by heck that was a
[01:30:07] wooden performance
[01:30:09] like
[01:30:10] yeah
[01:30:11] but the bartender
[01:30:12] yeah
[01:30:13] the bartender's
[01:30:15] worst you're saying
[01:30:15] yeah that
[01:30:16] yeah the bar
[01:30:17] it's like
[01:30:17] why are those nested
[01:30:19] tables having a
[01:30:20] scene together
[01:30:20] it's like
[01:30:21] oh no it's the
[01:30:22] bartender and shanty's
[01:30:23] like
[01:30:23] good grief
[01:30:24] you could make
[01:30:25] furniture out of
[01:30:26] that performance
[01:30:28] for me
[01:30:29] it was more the
[01:30:30] writing that i had
[01:30:31] some issues with
[01:30:31] like i didn't
[01:30:33] understand how we
[01:30:34] were supposed to
[01:30:34] root for their
[01:30:35] relationship like
[01:30:36] she didn't even
[01:30:36] write that shine
[01:30:37] song for him
[01:30:38] no it brought
[01:30:39] them together
[01:30:40] because he saw
[01:30:40] her sing it and
[01:30:41] he's like oh i
[01:30:42] want to ride these
[01:30:42] coattails up to the
[01:30:43] top and he does
[01:30:45] become a restaurateur
[01:30:45] out of it
[01:30:46] um but yeah i
[01:30:48] didn't root for
[01:30:49] them at all
[01:30:50] no
[01:30:52] and her mom's
[01:30:53] bitchy but she
[01:30:54] calls out that
[01:30:55] she gave her a
[01:30:56] stable steady
[01:30:57] upbringing so
[01:30:58] that's very
[01:30:58] unscruidged but
[01:30:58] that's fine we're
[01:30:59] gonna stop comparing
[01:31:00] to dickens anyway
[01:31:00] i do have to say
[01:31:02] in her mom's
[01:31:03] defense why is
[01:31:04] she wearing a
[01:31:05] couture mini dress
[01:31:06] to dinner with
[01:31:07] her mom
[01:31:08] like you can wear
[01:31:10] that dress sure
[01:31:10] absolutely uh
[01:31:11] you look great in
[01:31:12] it but there was a
[01:31:13] time and a place
[01:31:14] maybe not for
[01:31:15] dinner with your mom
[01:31:16] when you're
[01:31:17] introducing your
[01:31:17] boyfriend yeah
[01:31:20] yeah we got
[01:31:21] that um
[01:31:22] rothar we
[01:31:23] should have
[01:31:23] gotten more
[01:31:24] rothar is the
[01:31:25] spirit who's
[01:31:26] suddenly speaking
[01:31:27] through a burning
[01:31:27] tree at one
[01:31:28] point uh we
[01:31:30] should have gotten
[01:31:31] more of that and
[01:31:31] rothar comes back
[01:31:32] at the end to be
[01:31:33] like oh you you
[01:31:34] ladies got back
[01:31:35] into the pantheon
[01:31:36] after all the
[01:31:37] end i i i do
[01:31:39] not know where
[01:31:41] on earth that
[01:31:42] okay that's
[01:31:43] it's so random
[01:31:46] this entire movie
[01:31:47] is so random
[01:31:47] there was a
[01:31:49] reference by the
[01:31:49] way they have a
[01:31:50] bubble of silence
[01:31:50] which um anyone
[01:31:52] who's watching dune
[01:31:53] will know why a
[01:31:54] bubble of silence
[01:31:55] made me laugh
[01:31:56] lots of cones of
[01:31:57] silence
[01:31:58] um i i did like
[01:32:01] when they go to
[01:32:02] the future they
[01:32:03] say they all hate
[01:32:04] going to the future
[01:32:05] as it's a last
[01:32:06] resort thing because
[01:32:07] it causes them
[01:32:08] actual physical pain
[01:32:10] yeah that wasn't
[01:32:11] that was an
[01:32:12] interesting uh an
[01:32:14] interesting wrinkle
[01:32:14] and it was bleak in
[01:32:16] the future we see
[01:32:17] aphrodite's
[01:32:18] pawning her
[01:32:18] own awards
[01:32:19] so no one
[01:32:20] has to steal
[01:32:21] from her to
[01:32:21] do that she's
[01:32:22] doing it herself
[01:32:23] and then she's
[01:32:24] like singing
[01:32:24] sadly in an
[01:32:25] empty bar
[01:32:26] um she can't
[01:32:27] sing like her
[01:32:28] voice is gone
[01:32:28] yeah her voice
[01:32:29] is gone
[01:32:30] but also i
[01:32:32] object to the
[01:32:32] fact that she's
[01:32:33] moved by her
[01:32:34] own future
[01:32:34] failure not love
[01:32:35] for others
[01:32:36] like i feel like
[01:32:37] they missed the
[01:32:38] whole point
[01:32:39] yeah again
[01:32:40] like even the
[01:32:41] spirits have
[01:32:42] selfish motives
[01:32:43] yeah again
[01:32:44] like somebody
[01:32:45] may have given
[01:32:46] them somebody
[01:32:47] body may have
[01:32:48] given them the
[01:32:49] summary of the
[01:32:49] wikipedia page
[01:32:50] of a christmas
[01:32:51] cat because
[01:32:52] like there's the
[01:32:53] faint whiff of
[01:32:54] it somewhere in
[01:32:55] the background
[01:32:56] right
[01:32:57] they're like three
[01:32:58] spirits we got
[01:32:59] that
[01:32:59] yeah this is
[01:33:00] barely an
[01:33:01] adaptation at
[01:33:02] all
[01:33:02] yeah
[01:33:04] um although
[01:33:05] yeah we get a
[01:33:06] redemption for the
[01:33:07] spirits then as
[01:33:08] well i think we
[01:33:09] actually get more of
[01:33:10] a redemption for
[01:33:10] the spirits
[01:33:11] spirits than we
[01:33:12] do for aphrodite
[01:33:13] uh bastia gives
[01:33:15] up her last
[01:33:16] bangle almost
[01:33:17] um bastia calls
[01:33:19] out aphrodite
[01:33:20] for only wanting
[01:33:22] to reform for
[01:33:23] selfish reasons
[01:33:23] but they only
[01:33:24] gave her selfish
[01:33:25] showed her
[01:33:26] selfish things
[01:33:27] you know
[01:33:27] they didn't show
[01:33:28] her things at
[01:33:29] this point they
[01:33:30] finally go and
[01:33:31] see her protege
[01:33:31] who's dumping
[01:33:33] sick kira so
[01:33:34] this is kind of
[01:33:35] like it's
[01:33:36] christmas carol
[01:33:37] where she's
[01:33:37] corrupting her
[01:33:38] protege
[01:33:40] yeah
[01:33:42] but bastia yeah
[01:33:43] she's gonna give
[01:33:43] up her last
[01:33:44] bangle i don't
[01:33:44] understand that
[01:33:45] and then
[01:33:46] aphrodite ends
[01:33:47] up catching the
[01:33:48] bangle so
[01:33:48] bastia is not
[01:33:49] locked out of
[01:33:50] pantheon and
[01:33:50] they get all
[01:33:51] their bangles
[01:33:51] back and she
[01:33:52] tries to give
[01:33:52] the bangle
[01:33:53] back and
[01:33:53] and bastia's
[01:33:55] like oh no
[01:33:55] you can keep
[01:33:55] it so i'm
[01:33:56] like can she
[01:33:56] now look
[01:33:57] through the
[01:33:57] picture with
[01:33:58] the bangle
[01:33:58] what can she
[01:33:59] do with
[01:33:59] the bangle
[01:33:59] it's just
[01:33:59] a memory
[01:34:01] yeah
[01:34:03] but yeah i
[01:34:04] appreciate uh
[01:34:04] sorry back to
[01:34:05] the the protege
[01:34:06] appreciate aphrodite
[01:34:07] says she's trying
[01:34:07] to harden her up to
[01:34:08] keep her from
[01:34:09] getting hurt
[01:34:10] but it's another
[01:34:11] one where she
[01:34:12] like it's
[01:34:13] christmas carol
[01:34:13] where she wakes
[01:34:14] up and things
[01:34:15] are still bad
[01:34:15] like she's
[01:34:16] already been
[01:34:16] fired when she
[01:34:17] wakes up
[01:34:17] uh her best
[01:34:19] friend femi
[01:34:20] slash assistant
[01:34:20] turned on her
[01:34:22] and also left
[01:34:22] the show
[01:34:23] and cut ties
[01:34:25] but then
[01:34:26] never fear
[01:34:27] her protege
[01:34:28] fixes everything
[01:34:29] by singing
[01:34:30] the right song
[01:34:31] like if they
[01:34:33] fired aphrodite
[01:34:34] why didn't
[01:34:35] they just
[01:34:35] change the
[01:34:36] song back
[01:34:36] anyway
[01:34:38] and we
[01:34:38] never hear
[01:34:39] this song
[01:34:39] we only
[01:34:40] ever hear
[01:34:40] like snatches
[01:34:41] yeah we
[01:34:41] saw a little
[01:34:42] bit of it
[01:34:42] it was fine
[01:34:43] it was just
[01:34:44] very generic
[01:34:44] pop
[01:34:45] yeah
[01:34:46] and then she
[01:34:47] writes a script
[01:34:48] for her protege
[01:34:49] to say to her
[01:34:50] girlfriend
[01:34:50] kira which is
[01:34:51] also like
[01:34:52] what
[01:34:53] like a letter
[01:34:54] that's not
[01:34:55] and then she's
[01:34:56] like oh that's
[01:34:57] so sweet
[01:34:57] like she didn't
[01:34:58] say that
[01:34:59] yeah
[01:35:00] it wasn't
[01:35:00] from your
[01:35:01] girlfriend
[01:35:01] no it's
[01:35:03] it's a very
[01:35:04] weird film
[01:35:06] but i do have
[01:35:07] to say
[01:35:08] that handing
[01:35:09] your hit song
[01:35:09] to the next
[01:35:10] generation
[01:35:10] to someone
[01:35:11] who's being
[01:35:12] called the
[01:35:12] next you
[01:35:13] is actually
[01:35:13] really generous
[01:35:14] and then they
[01:35:14] do a duet
[01:35:15] together
[01:35:15] yes
[01:35:16] but then she
[01:35:17] broadcasts
[01:35:18] then she's
[01:35:18] like oh
[01:35:19] and by the
[01:35:19] way i'm
[01:35:19] giving your
[01:35:20] girlfriend
[01:35:20] health care
[01:35:20] and she
[01:35:21] broadcasts
[01:35:21] that live
[01:35:22] and i would
[01:35:23] be like
[01:35:23] that's private
[01:35:24] information
[01:35:27] too much
[01:35:27] sharing
[01:35:28] and then
[01:35:29] just to make
[01:35:30] things a little
[01:35:30] weirder
[01:35:31] um it starts
[01:35:32] snowing
[01:35:33] inside the
[01:35:33] bar because
[01:35:34] of christmas
[01:35:35] magic
[01:35:37] and then again
[01:35:38] like to
[01:35:39] back to this
[01:35:40] theme of
[01:35:41] having kind
[01:35:42] of selfish
[01:35:42] redemption
[01:35:43] um endings
[01:35:44] she takes over
[01:35:45] her ex's bar
[01:35:46] and demands
[01:35:47] dinner
[01:35:47] she just shows
[01:35:49] up she's like
[01:35:49] i'll be taking
[01:35:50] it for christmas
[01:35:50] it's gonna be
[01:35:51] a show
[01:35:51] and you're
[01:35:52] gonna feed
[01:35:53] all of us
[01:35:55] but like i
[01:35:55] said i
[01:35:56] appreciate the
[01:35:57] confrontation with
[01:35:57] the mom that
[01:35:58] she just walks
[01:35:58] away because
[01:35:59] sometimes you
[01:36:00] just have to
[01:36:00] walk away
[01:36:01] yeah um
[01:36:01] yeah one
[01:36:04] spirit wants
[01:36:04] to lick her
[01:36:05] face last
[01:36:05] random thing
[01:36:07] and we get
[01:36:08] ghost mistletoe
[01:36:08] okay that's
[01:36:09] the last last
[01:36:09] random thing
[01:36:11] it's movie so
[01:36:12] weird and i
[01:36:13] don't hate it
[01:36:14] i don't hate
[01:36:14] it well this is
[01:36:15] the thing i
[01:36:16] just kind of
[01:36:18] meh
[01:36:18] hmm
[01:36:20] what
[01:36:21] it just
[01:36:25] is
[01:36:25] it is
[01:36:27] it is
[01:36:28] neither
[01:36:28] it is
[01:36:29] neither
[01:36:29] good
[01:36:30] nor is
[01:36:31] it so
[01:36:32] bad that i
[01:36:33] have any
[01:36:33] kind of reaction
[01:36:34] to it
[01:36:34] it just
[01:36:35] washed
[01:36:36] over
[01:36:36] hmm
[01:36:37] i'm glad
[01:36:38] that i
[01:36:38] watched it
[01:36:39] in the same
[01:36:40] way that i'm
[01:36:40] glad that i
[01:36:41] watched clarence
[01:36:42] because um
[01:36:42] now i have all
[01:36:44] these weird
[01:36:44] moments stuck in
[01:36:45] my head and
[01:36:46] that makes my
[01:36:47] brain a richer
[01:36:48] place
[01:36:49] just knowing
[01:36:50] that this
[01:36:51] exists
[01:36:51] this is the
[01:36:52] thing in order
[01:36:52] to appreciate
[01:36:53] good media
[01:36:54] you sometimes
[01:36:55] need to watch
[01:36:56] a little bit
[01:36:56] of bad media
[01:36:57] just so you
[01:36:58] can level
[01:36:59] set where
[01:37:00] things are
[01:37:00] yeah but it's
[01:37:01] also sometimes
[01:37:02] you know like
[01:37:03] it's there it
[01:37:04] had moments that
[01:37:05] i enjoyed and
[01:37:06] you know they're
[01:37:07] sticking my head
[01:37:07] too where you
[01:37:08] think what went
[01:37:09] wrong here
[01:37:10] yeah i'm not
[01:37:11] sure that you
[01:37:12] you enjoyed them
[01:37:13] in the way you
[01:37:13] were meant to
[01:37:14] enjoy them
[01:37:15] no well i'm
[01:37:17] not sure what
[01:37:17] way they were
[01:37:18] meant to be
[01:37:22] that's true
[01:37:23] all right any
[01:37:25] final thoughts on
[01:37:26] this one no i've
[01:37:27] already said way
[01:37:28] more about this
[01:37:29] movie than i
[01:37:29] thought i was
[01:37:30] gonna be able
[01:37:31] to i mean i'm
[01:37:34] not gonna tell
[01:37:34] people not to
[01:37:35] watch it but you
[01:37:36] know you you
[01:37:37] decide for
[01:37:38] yourselves if
[01:37:39] this is a up
[01:37:40] your alley or
[01:37:40] not um we're
[01:37:42] going to take a
[01:37:42] quick break and
[01:37:43] when we come back
[01:37:43] we're gonna discuss
[01:37:44] our last two
[01:37:45] films which i
[01:37:45] promise we like
[01:37:46] much better
[01:37:47] yeah all right
[01:37:48] see you on the
[01:37:49] other side
[01:37:52] okay and we're
[01:37:53] back with the
[01:37:54] last two films
[01:37:55] the musical
[01:37:56] twists so
[01:37:58] first we're
[01:37:59] going to talk
[01:37:59] about scrooge
[01:38:00] a christmas
[01:38:01] carol which is
[01:38:02] a 2022
[01:38:02] animated film
[01:38:04] it's a loose
[01:38:05] emphasis on
[01:38:07] loose remake
[01:38:07] actually not
[01:38:09] compared to what
[01:38:09] we just talked
[01:38:10] about with the
[01:38:10] diva stuff but
[01:38:12] yeah it's
[01:38:13] somewhat faithful
[01:38:14] remake of uh
[01:38:16] 1970s scrooge
[01:38:17] the musical that
[01:38:18] we talked about
[01:38:19] in the classics
[01:38:20] episode with
[01:38:21] albert finney
[01:38:22] but this one
[01:38:23] has swapped out
[01:38:25] most of the
[01:38:25] songs and added
[01:38:27] some trippy
[01:38:27] sci-fi and fantasy
[01:38:28] elements and also
[01:38:29] scrooge has a
[01:38:30] dog were you
[01:38:31] surprised by that
[01:38:32] i was
[01:38:32] but you know
[01:38:33] what that you
[01:38:33] know what song
[01:38:34] league didn't
[01:38:35] swap out alicia
[01:38:35] no thank you
[01:38:36] very much
[01:38:38] of course
[01:38:39] just when
[01:38:40] just when
[01:38:41] just when i
[01:38:41] get out
[01:38:42] they drag
[01:38:42] me back
[01:38:43] in
[01:38:45] were you
[01:38:45] surprised about
[01:38:46] the dog though
[01:38:47] i like the
[01:38:48] dog um i
[01:38:49] think i think
[01:38:50] of all the
[01:38:50] adaptations i've
[01:38:52] watched
[01:38:53] if i were to
[01:38:54] show one to
[01:38:55] my five-year-old
[01:38:56] nephew
[01:38:56] it'd be this
[01:38:57] one
[01:38:57] this would
[01:38:58] be it
[01:38:58] because
[01:39:00] obviously we've
[01:39:01] seen like
[01:39:01] cartoons and
[01:39:02] other adaptations
[01:39:03] aimed at
[01:39:04] children but i
[01:39:05] think this one
[01:39:06] would be the
[01:39:06] one that would
[01:39:07] sustain its
[01:39:08] interest it's
[01:39:09] very colorful it's
[01:39:10] very lively it's
[01:39:11] a big it's got
[01:39:12] the big slobbery
[01:39:13] dog um it
[01:39:15] really tracks along
[01:39:16] at a pace so
[01:39:17] yeah i think if
[01:39:18] you've got if
[01:39:20] you've got small
[01:39:21] children in your
[01:39:21] life and you
[01:39:23] want to show them
[01:39:23] a christmas carol i
[01:39:25] think this might be
[01:39:26] the way to go
[01:39:27] yeah yeah all
[01:39:29] right well let's
[01:39:29] check in on what
[01:39:30] you said right
[01:39:31] after you watched
[01:39:31] it so i've just
[01:39:33] finished watching
[01:39:33] scrooge a
[01:39:34] christmas carol
[01:39:35] certainly the
[01:39:36] most psychedelic
[01:39:38] of the films we've
[01:39:40] looked at this
[01:39:41] year um i
[01:39:44] enjoyed it um
[01:39:46] it's very high
[01:39:48] energy um it
[01:39:51] has an
[01:39:51] interesting take
[01:39:52] on scrooge
[01:39:55] i particularly
[01:39:56] like scrooge
[01:39:57] the dog
[01:39:58] own that was
[01:39:59] an interesting
[01:40:00] little wrinkle
[01:40:03] um it just
[01:40:05] says it's
[01:40:05] inspired by the
[01:40:07] giles dickens
[01:40:08] novella but it
[01:40:10] clearly has a
[01:40:11] relationship to
[01:40:12] the albert finney
[01:40:13] film it uses a
[01:40:14] couple of the
[01:40:15] songs uh namely
[01:40:17] i like life and
[01:40:18] of course thank you
[01:40:19] very much thank you
[01:40:21] very much um so
[01:40:24] it doesn't say it's
[01:40:25] based on that but
[01:40:27] it clearly kind of
[01:40:28] is um of all the
[01:40:32] films we've watched
[01:40:33] even including the
[01:40:35] muppets and even
[01:40:36] including mickey's
[01:40:37] christmas carol i
[01:40:39] would say this one
[01:40:40] is most obviously an
[01:40:42] adaptation for
[01:40:42] children just in the
[01:40:44] way it's shot the
[01:40:45] way it's uh like the
[01:40:48] humor of it this is
[01:40:50] most clearly a kids
[01:40:51] film to me but that
[01:40:54] doesn't mean i didn't
[01:40:55] enjoy it um i
[01:40:56] particularly liked
[01:40:57] olivia coleman as
[01:40:59] the ghost of
[01:40:59] christmas past that
[01:41:01] was very good and
[01:41:02] i did laugh a lot
[01:41:04] more than i probably
[01:41:05] should have to
[01:41:07] mr wizzy fig and
[01:41:08] mr wizzy fig as
[01:41:10] she called him
[01:41:11] that made me laugh
[01:41:12] a lot anyway yeah
[01:41:15] i enjoyed it it
[01:41:17] was certainly
[01:41:19] psychedelic
[01:41:23] um yeah
[01:41:26] yeah so yeah
[01:41:28] definitely it is a
[01:41:29] remake of the first
[01:41:30] one and actually
[01:41:31] this screenwriter slash
[01:41:32] songwriter of the
[01:41:33] first one leslie
[01:41:34] bricuse he came
[01:41:35] back and wrote the
[01:41:36] new songs in this
[01:41:37] one but he passed
[01:41:39] away before the film
[01:41:40] was released so the
[01:41:41] film is dedicated to
[01:41:42] him oh that's a
[01:41:44] shame yeah so the
[01:41:46] director of this one
[01:41:48] is steven donnelly
[01:41:49] he's done like
[01:41:50] monster high and
[01:41:51] other kids stuff so
[01:41:52] yeah he's a kid
[01:41:52] specialist and it
[01:41:54] was written by him
[01:41:55] and leslie bricuse
[01:41:57] who you know was
[01:41:58] the writer of the
[01:41:58] original so he gets
[01:41:59] a screen credit
[01:42:00] uh and scrooge in
[01:42:01] this one was played
[01:42:02] by luke evans and
[01:42:04] other noteworthy
[01:42:05] cast members you
[01:42:06] already shouted out
[01:42:06] olivia coleman
[01:42:07] jesse buckley's in
[01:42:08] here jonathan price
[01:42:09] johnny flynn james
[01:42:10] cosmo it's uh yeah
[01:42:11] quite a it's a
[01:42:12] surprisingly stacked
[01:42:13] cast for a kid's
[01:42:15] second then second
[01:42:17] entry uh second
[01:42:19] entry for jonathan
[01:42:20] price who's in the
[01:42:22] man who invented
[01:42:23] christmas as well
[01:42:24] yeah yeah that's a
[01:42:26] crossover yeah um i
[01:42:28] gave this one a 3.5
[01:42:30] stars on letterboxd i
[01:42:31] said this take on a
[01:42:32] christmas carol
[01:42:33] ostensibly a remake
[01:42:34] of the 1970 albert
[01:42:36] finney musical scrooge
[01:42:37] it includes thank you
[01:42:38] very much and a
[01:42:38] bunch of new
[01:42:39] improved songs is so
[01:42:40] bonkers and that's
[01:42:42] what i love about it
[01:42:43] scrooge has a dog
[01:42:44] time travel looks like
[01:42:45] time travel the ghosts
[01:42:46] are wild you can
[01:42:48] definitely feel that
[01:42:49] this was tweaked for
[01:42:50] kids smoothing down
[01:42:51] the scariest scenes
[01:42:52] and making plot
[01:42:53] points and dialogue
[01:42:54] clearer but i can
[01:42:55] wholeheartedly recommend
[01:42:56] it to adults who like
[01:42:58] this tale as well
[01:42:59] just be prepared for
[01:43:00] something different i
[01:43:01] only wish they had
[01:43:02] given the arts and
[01:43:03] animation team more
[01:43:04] time and money to
[01:43:05] finish this in more
[01:43:06] detail
[01:43:08] and yeah trippiest
[01:43:10] christmas carols you
[01:43:11] said but i think the
[01:43:12] animation budget was
[01:43:13] really where they were
[01:43:14] the most limited um
[01:43:16] i just noticed it
[01:43:17] wasn't as finished as
[01:43:19] it could be but my
[01:43:19] eyes quickly adjusted
[01:43:20] because i was quite
[01:43:21] into the story yeah
[01:43:23] and the character design
[01:43:24] was good and stuff um
[01:43:25] although everyone was
[01:43:26] kind of smooth down the
[01:43:27] scary bit the scariness
[01:43:29] of it there is actually a
[01:43:30] bit where like christmas uh
[01:43:32] present transitions into
[01:43:34] christmas yet to come
[01:43:35] yeah that's true which is
[01:43:36] actually really not which
[01:43:38] is actually really gnarly
[01:43:39] because it's like a little
[01:43:40] bit of it's like a little
[01:43:42] bit of poltergeisty body
[01:43:44] horror going on and also
[01:43:46] like christmas present has
[01:43:48] like three little um
[01:43:50] sprites sprites that
[01:43:52] become like three little
[01:43:53] devil they're like
[01:43:54] traditionally the three
[01:43:55] little devils but they
[01:43:57] don't do the whole hell
[01:43:58] sequence from the original
[01:43:59] movie no they don't
[01:44:00] yeah um one big
[01:44:03] difference that they made
[01:44:04] versus the 1971 is all
[01:44:06] the people in this one
[01:44:07] can sing yes this is true
[01:44:11] of course you know they
[01:44:12] update the the language so
[01:44:14] they do indirectly quote
[01:44:15] the book a lot but they
[01:44:16] update it to modern
[01:44:17] parlance which makes
[01:44:19] sense i like their
[01:44:21] nephew the nephew harry i
[01:44:22] always said that well it's
[01:44:24] fred and other
[01:44:25] adaptations but or in the
[01:44:26] book you know um but i
[01:44:28] always said he's kind of
[01:44:29] loki my favorite character
[01:44:30] and he hangs out around
[01:44:31] more in this one which is
[01:44:33] nice yeah and then
[01:44:35] yeah scrooge has a dog
[01:44:36] named prudence so is
[01:44:38] this we find out later
[01:44:39] that he's left by marley
[01:44:40] but is this like proof
[01:44:43] that one or both have a
[01:44:45] soft spot because you
[01:44:46] know yeah i think i think
[01:44:48] it is but also great name
[01:44:50] for scrooge's dog
[01:44:51] prudence yeah prudence
[01:44:53] yeah so one complaint i
[01:44:56] saw online that i had to
[01:44:58] laugh about do you think
[01:44:59] scrooge is too handsome in
[01:45:01] this version i mean it's
[01:45:04] just the art style
[01:45:05] everyone's yeah no no i
[01:45:07] don't i don't think he's
[01:45:08] too handsome hmm okay so
[01:45:11] i talked in the classics
[01:45:12] episode about how i was
[01:45:13] tracking the opening songs
[01:45:14] i noticed this one opens
[01:45:15] with deck the halls but
[01:45:16] then switches to good
[01:45:18] king wenceslas when the
[01:45:19] women are coming along for
[01:45:20] charity so they're
[01:45:21] combining the carolers and
[01:45:23] the charity i don't know
[01:45:24] i always find that
[01:45:25] interesting good king
[01:45:26] wenceslas is one of the
[01:45:27] songs they use the most i
[01:45:28] don't know why they don't
[01:45:29] just use use the one for
[01:45:30] the books but anyway yeah
[01:45:32] um and there's also we see
[01:45:35] the ghost of christmas past
[01:45:36] is modeled off of a poster
[01:45:38] he sees for a christmas
[01:45:39] extravaganza starring
[01:45:41] lottie milligan and
[01:45:43] becomes the ghost of
[01:45:44] christmas past played by
[01:45:45] olivia coleman so i
[01:45:47] automatically love it but i
[01:45:48] love you know i talked a
[01:45:49] lot about how yeah
[01:45:52] dickens in about
[01:45:53] dickens um writing about
[01:45:55] this like shifting
[01:45:56] character this is one of
[01:45:57] the best representations
[01:45:58] because she's a candle she
[01:45:59] really is kind of shifting
[01:46:01] and shape-shifting as it
[01:46:03] goes on i like that there's
[01:46:04] a bit where she shapeshift
[01:46:05] into scrooge and it's
[01:46:07] scrooge talking talking to
[01:46:09] himself right which is
[01:46:11] quite cool yeah and yeah
[01:46:13] i like i get like i said
[01:46:15] in the the voice note i
[01:46:16] laughed more than i ought to
[01:46:18] at mr wizzy fig i don't
[01:46:21] know why that tickled me
[01:46:22] but i laughed at that too
[01:46:23] that was funny that was i
[01:46:24] thought that was her best
[01:46:25] line yeah yeah um i like
[01:46:29] the characterization of
[01:46:30] scrooge in this one
[01:46:31] because for instance for
[01:46:33] example he has from his
[01:46:35] lost love bell he has
[01:46:36] still a watch that says to
[01:46:38] our happiness and he keeps
[01:46:40] it and you see him at one
[01:46:43] point you know you see him
[01:46:44] looking at it he obviously
[01:46:45] wants to remember her but
[01:46:46] it's a painful memory so
[01:46:47] when he looks at it he sees
[01:46:49] another couple being happy
[01:46:50] on the street and he's it
[01:46:51] triggers him to be mean to
[01:46:52] them because he's jealous you
[01:46:54] know i i've just i think
[01:46:56] because it's done for kids
[01:46:57] they really took care to make
[01:46:59] sure that these things
[01:47:00] were clear and yeah
[01:47:02] things about wanting to
[01:47:03] just wanting to be alone
[01:47:04] it's not like i want to be
[01:47:05] an evil person it's like i
[01:47:06] just want to be alone and
[01:47:08] just forget about my
[01:47:09] hardships yeah like i said
[01:47:11] i've got a five-year-old
[01:47:12] nephew and i think of all
[01:47:13] the all the the adaptations
[01:47:15] we've looked at this is the
[01:47:16] one that might hope that
[01:47:18] might hold his interest
[01:47:19] yeah so it was you talked
[01:47:22] about the ghost of
[01:47:23] christmas future at that
[01:47:24] transition but also this the
[01:47:26] marley was pretty scarily
[01:47:27] yeah it was it was like
[01:47:29] yeah it's sort of like an
[01:47:31] ice ghost freezing the
[01:47:32] roof right i like um i love
[01:47:35] the way marley goes look i'm
[01:47:36] sure we can talk about this
[01:47:38] like gentleman
[01:47:39] yeah and then scrooge does
[01:47:41] the whole there's more gravy
[01:47:42] of grave more gravy than
[01:47:45] grave thing about you i don't
[01:47:47] think you did and then marley
[01:47:48] just go about the indigestion
[01:47:50] you mean yeah yeah and
[01:47:52] then marley just goes oh
[01:47:53] fine and starts the whole
[01:47:54] whaling of chains right like
[01:47:57] marley just wants to have a
[01:47:58] civilized conversation
[01:48:01] conversation yeah because he
[01:48:02] comes he comes in and he
[01:48:04] seats himself and his he's
[01:48:05] no cloth around his head but
[01:48:07] his jaw does fall like in the
[01:48:09] book and he's but then he
[01:48:11] says those in charge insist on
[01:48:13] a touch of pageantry and yeah
[01:48:14] but scrooge is like still not
[01:48:16] buying into he's like okay fine
[01:48:18] this is why we have to do the
[01:48:19] pageantry put on a show make
[01:48:22] them believe you it is
[01:48:23] interesting so i i said we
[01:48:25] didn't get that hell scene at the
[01:48:26] end where in the scrooge 1970
[01:48:29] musical he's wrapped with
[01:48:31] chains so here he's wrapped with
[01:48:33] chains during the marley scene
[01:48:34] yeah i love the way that he falls
[01:48:38] through dimensions and it's wild
[01:48:40] that the dog comes with him
[01:48:41] like what is the dog learning
[01:48:43] yeah um we do get to see like the
[01:48:50] well yeah we show they chose him
[01:48:52] in a workhouse while his father's
[01:48:55] in a debtor's prison so they're
[01:48:56] really taking that not from the
[01:48:57] novel but from dickens own life
[01:48:59] yeah and then and he's making like
[01:49:00] little Christmas trinkets as well
[01:49:03] mm-hmm uh which actually i think this
[01:49:06] like you were saying i think because
[01:49:08] it's aimed at kids it makes it much
[01:49:11] clearer why scrooge hates christmas
[01:49:15] right as opposed to you know him just
[01:49:19] being mean right like he actually he
[01:49:23] actually has more reason to
[01:49:25] specifically hate christmas now in
[01:49:27] this in this adaptation like his his
[01:49:30] sister who is sick died on christmas day
[01:49:32] yeah that's one yeah and we also have
[01:49:36] in this one isabel's fezzy wig's
[01:49:38] daughter yes um and scrooge we see
[01:49:42] like scrooge being quite nice while
[01:49:44] working for fezzy wig and that he's
[01:49:46] trying to extend people these loans
[01:49:49] that we see him later being a real
[01:49:51] dick about the collecting the loans in
[01:49:53] you know the present and that's that's
[01:49:56] the main thing from uh the scrooge
[01:49:57] musical but here we actually see him in
[01:50:00] the past where he's he's extending
[01:50:02] money but it's getting him him in
[01:50:04] trouble too so he tells someone you
[01:50:05] have a week and no more or we shall
[01:50:06] both have to look for new employment
[01:50:10] yeah there's a lot of new scenes but i
[01:50:12] think they pull the rest together and
[01:50:15] it's really well paced i think it's
[01:50:16] better paced in the musical from the
[01:50:18] second it is yeah it is yeah it is and
[01:50:22] they add an extra twist where scrooge is
[01:50:23] responsible for cratchit's parents
[01:50:25] losing his house yeah okay but cratchit is
[01:50:31] apparently unaware of this um right and
[01:50:34] we know it's cratchit because he has
[01:50:35] heterochromia yeah and um the the the
[01:50:39] scenes of the cratchit family christmas
[01:50:42] are actually quite close to the the the
[01:50:45] finney version as well like they're not
[01:50:49] shot for shot but that you can certainly
[01:50:51] see that the director and the animators
[01:50:54] have looked at those scenes and they cut
[01:50:56] there's kind of the same general sort of
[01:50:59] feel about them yeah yeah we find out
[01:51:03] that in the past marley had another dog
[01:51:05] before prudence so apparently marley was
[01:51:07] just a dog person apparently yeah and
[01:51:10] instead of scrooge snuffing the ghost of
[01:51:13] christmas past out himself the ghost
[01:51:15] candle just disintegrates and the next one
[01:51:18] um ghost of christmas present is this the
[01:51:21] most giant throne of food we've seen in any
[01:51:23] of the adaptations i love that like the
[01:51:26] ghost of christmas present tries to be
[01:51:27] intimidating and can't keep it up
[01:51:31] it's like yeah
[01:51:32] yeah he's too jolly they launched the most
[01:51:36] massive song and dance number as well
[01:51:39] yeah i love that he randomly has three
[01:51:42] sprites like what's that about where did
[01:51:45] they come from
[01:51:45] yeah and he's changes size that's cool
[01:51:49] yes it does
[01:51:53] um i also like in this version so when
[01:51:55] they're they're visiting the present his
[01:51:57] nephew harry explains more about why he
[01:52:01] sticks up for his uncle and it's
[01:52:02] basically because of his mom you know
[01:52:04] my mom loved him i know there's something
[01:52:06] to love in there um and i actually teared
[01:52:09] up when he toasted to his mom to the
[01:52:11] portrait of her on the wall oh blessed
[01:52:13] oh i like also that they you know uh
[01:52:18] these adaptations ignore the fact that
[01:52:20] there's been um a large indian british
[01:52:23] contingency of the population for a long
[01:52:26] time so this they incorporate that into
[01:52:28] the nephews family yes
[01:52:31] um mrs cratchit though she goes she goes
[01:52:33] way hard on scrooge though i was like
[01:52:35] damn bitch
[01:52:38] even worse than miss piggy again i think
[01:52:40] this is the it's a kids movie so we're
[01:52:43] gonna we're gonna make it we're gonna we're
[01:52:45] gonna make everything just a little bit
[01:52:47] more obvious
[01:52:48] yeah i love they actually have timmy sing a
[01:52:51] song like in the book but it's not a song
[01:52:53] about a lost child in the snow
[01:52:54] yeah and then yeah that that uh you already
[01:52:58] talked about that transition to ghost of
[01:53:00] christmas yet to come and the evil sprites
[01:53:03] the evil i love the evil sprites i want like
[01:53:06] a little evil sprite figure
[01:53:09] we get thank you very much thank you very much
[01:53:12] seriously i just got that out of my head
[01:53:18] but he's he's in scrooge's in deep denial
[01:53:21] this is another one where they did it well
[01:53:23] to make sure it was clear to kids so like
[01:53:25] they show the dog going over and looking at
[01:53:27] the coffin so the dog knows but scrooge is
[01:53:29] like completely oblivious you know yeah and
[01:53:33] yeah again they do they combine the scenes
[01:53:35] in the cemetery at the end and but
[01:53:38] question so they didn't do they do him
[01:53:41] following through the grave and goes back
[01:53:42] to his bed instead of the whole hell
[01:53:44] sequence i get it it's for kids
[01:53:45] but those people who are singing were they
[01:53:47] just going to leave prudence the dog there
[01:53:50] alone
[01:53:51] i was so mad at them
[01:53:52] that's a yeah i hadn't thought about that
[01:53:55] but it's a good question
[01:53:58] this is another one where he when he wakes
[01:54:01] up all reformed he calls down to a man
[01:54:03] instead of a kid
[01:54:05] and uh he gives the kid turkey money up
[01:54:07] front
[01:54:08] uh same with the kid and it's the same
[01:54:11] kids from the start of the film but that's
[01:54:12] always been a question for me like
[01:54:14] he just tells
[01:54:15] oh random urchin kid go tell the poultry
[01:54:19] that i want to buy their biggest bird and
[01:54:22] just trust you
[01:54:25] but again he decorates and throws his own
[01:54:28] party which is kind of selfish to ask
[01:54:30] everyone to drop their own plans last
[01:54:31] minute
[01:54:32] yeah
[01:54:34] he still seems like he's about to
[01:54:36] bankrupt himself like the 1970 music
[01:54:38] maybe a little bit less
[01:54:39] but i really like that we get around the
[01:54:41] dinner scene we get few glimpses of
[01:54:43] future scenes so replacing like we see the
[01:54:46] doom scenes from the ghost of um christmas
[01:54:49] yet to come and then they that scene fades
[01:54:52] away and is replaced by a happier version
[01:54:54] of that
[01:54:54] yeah
[01:54:54] tiny tim doing well and that sort of thing
[01:54:57] yeah
[01:54:57] yeah
[01:54:59] overall i really
[01:55:01] actually quite like this
[01:55:02] yeah i did i thought i mean
[01:55:05] of all the adaptations we looked at and it
[01:55:08] sounds
[01:55:08] strange with the muppets and the
[01:55:10] flintstones
[01:55:10] but it is the most i think you could say
[01:55:14] it's not a family film it's a kids film
[01:55:17] yeah
[01:55:17] it's not to say adults won't enjoy it
[01:55:19] well i think it's great for adults too
[01:55:21] but it is a film targeted
[01:55:23] at children and that and that's fine
[01:55:26] what's in mickey 2
[01:55:28] pardon
[01:55:28] mickey 2 mickey as well
[01:55:30] yeah um yeah i really enjoyed this i thought it went
[01:55:33] i i very bright very colorful very sort of high energy yeah i enjoyed it
[01:55:41] yeah
[01:55:41] okay
[01:55:43] well that brings us to our last film for this year
[01:55:47] are you sad are you excited
[01:55:49] good afternoon
[01:55:50] good afternoon yeah that's the version of thank you very much
[01:55:54] so of course we're talking about spirited from 2022
[01:55:57] um this one's more of a sequel than a retelling but you only find that out
[01:56:01] halfway through
[01:56:02] uh so that's one reason it's going last
[01:56:05] and the other one is that we both found it delightful
[01:56:08] so it's a good note to end on
[01:56:10] uh this one was directed by sean anders who's known for more like screwball movies
[01:56:15] like sex drive hot tub time machine she's out of my league where the millers etc
[01:56:19] um and he wrote it with john morris who's a frequent collaborator with him and all of the above
[01:56:25] scrooge in this one well we have clint briggs played by ryan reynolds and he's the one who's
[01:56:30] being reformed but then we also have will ferrell which is a twist that we find out he's scrooge
[01:56:36] halfway through apparently they earn 20 million each for this nice work if you get it
[01:56:42] mm-hmm and the cast is great otherwise we have octavia spencer we have sunita money
[01:56:48] so good sorry octavia spencer's so good in this
[01:56:52] mm-hmm i really like uh sunita money i know her from a whole bunch of things but i always think
[01:56:58] most of that um that music video from the daniels like turn down for what
[01:57:05] anyway okay mm-hmm yeah there's the daniels for anyone who doesn't know they're the directors of
[01:57:10] everything everywhere all at once um yeah we have patrick page is marley we have tracy morgan as the
[01:57:18] ghost of christmas yet to come rose byrne has a cameo at the beginning judy dench makes the best
[01:57:24] cameo best cameo yeah such a good cameo uh jimmy fallon shows up at one point as a cameo too
[01:57:30] all right let's check in on what you said right after watching so i just finished watching spirited
[01:57:36] on apple tv plus um the start out as a really weird film i'm not a huge fan of will ferrell as a comedian
[01:57:49] uh i think that ryan reynolds sort of very knowing fourth wall breaky shtick
[01:57:59] is something i can only take in relatively small doses um so i wasn't expecting to enjoy this anywhere
[01:58:07] near as much as i did it's really funny in places um octavia spencer is fantastic
[01:58:17] and actually i think ferrell and rannalds work incredibly well as a comedian pairing
[01:58:25] i do like the bit where they're in victorian london and they're singing and um ferrell goes do you
[01:58:33] know what the leading cause of death was in my time no january that really made me laugh um
[01:58:41] yeah i enjoyed this far more than i thought i was going to
[01:58:47] yeah i also really liked it i gave it four stars and letterboxed i said a smart silly twist on the usual
[01:58:53] christmas carol fair the smartest part of the twist becomes clear an hour in but it makes me laugh it's
[01:59:00] full of heart and the music is good too a fun classic i'd recommend to anyone it's the longest
[01:59:05] of the bunch as we said more of a sequel and from the perspective of the ghosts so i was surprised
[01:59:10] the rotten tomato summary uh says something like oh that doesn't bring anything new to the table i'm
[01:59:17] did we watch the same film it brings loads of new stuff to the table yeah do we watch this is like
[01:59:22] apparently several uh critics said this i'm like that's not the movie i watch you must be talking
[01:59:27] about something else what are you talking about yeah um i love like you know i i think one thing
[01:59:34] ryan reynolds especially does really well is the meta self-commentary and the jokes
[01:59:40] yeah like that's what i meant by the sort of fourth wall breaking thing it's it's okay i just like
[01:59:49] i enjoyed the first deadpool i enjoyed the first deadpool movie but like he really needs to do
[01:59:56] stuff that isn't that kind of knowing winking at the like because i remember like brian reynolds
[02:00:04] needs to do more drama he needs to do more like weighty roles because he's good at that kind of
[02:00:10] yeah he's he's good at that kind of thing um i just wish he'd i just wish he'd i just wish he'd
[02:00:19] stretch himself a bit i don't know disagree i think that this was uh him and his element and that worked
[02:00:26] perfectly like i loved how the musical moments they do the full musical thing but it's always
[02:00:31] acknowledged as intentional they're like oh okay here we go we're doing this again all right right
[02:00:35] are we really taking the time right now to sing a song i would really like to know how much of the
[02:00:41] dancing um ryan reynolds and will ferrell actually do because it's very high end it looks very
[02:00:48] complicated well no you can actually watch videos of them of rehearsing and yeah they struggled um but
[02:00:55] they they struggle but they learned it uh there's behind the scenes videos on apple okay so in like
[02:01:01] under the extras tab there's like three or four videos they actually did do that themselves okay
[02:01:06] yeah they painstakingly learned it but they show them they have a video where uh will ferrell's like
[02:01:11] you should take a video of us now so people see how bad we were when we started
[02:01:17] um the songs i i think that the songs are really quite good like it's not it does it has good afternoon
[02:01:24] i don't think that's quite up there with thank you very much not quite close but overall i think
[02:01:30] this has the best overall soundtrack for a musical that we've seen yeah the one it's not a criticism
[02:01:38] i'd just be interested like if i came back to this in 10 years how well would it date because there's a
[02:01:47] lot of there's a lot of stuff about social media in there there's a lot of stuff about like i think
[02:01:54] like contemporary politics in there so i i wonder how well i wonder how well i wonder how well it
[02:02:01] will sort of survive as a you know whether it's too sort of tied to the particular moment we're in
[02:02:07] mm-hmm um so i've talked previously about you know how these adaptations are also adaptations of each
[02:02:15] other as much as the original work and often cases and this one they do specifically bring up
[02:02:22] scrooged the movie that you and i didn't like out of all the adaptations um and i do see some of that
[02:02:28] imprint in here but done more tastefully in my opinion done more coherently as well well sure yeah
[02:02:35] yeah what did you think about uh scrooge got a romance with octavia butler's character yeah no
[02:02:42] octavia spencer yeah it's octavia spencer sorry butler is the writer and i always do that yeah
[02:02:47] and i also like the um the fact that um brian reynolds character managed to seduce the ghost
[02:02:54] managed to seduce the ghost of christmas past right he's just a bad influence on the ghost that whole
[02:03:01] plot was funny i think she's hilarious i love her yeah she is yeah i think yeah it feels like a truly
[02:03:08] fresh take to me because we've got it's like the sequel situation we've got this whole
[02:03:13] unredeemable concept unredeemable actually yeah there's so good songs in there i like this is the
[02:03:20] thing because ryan reynolds character is familiar with the source material it's like oh come on so
[02:03:27] now you're gonna do this we've done this right yeah it's again that question i brought up before
[02:03:33] of you know if you know how the haunts and that's a scrooge thing which they do reference directly
[02:03:38] if you know how it's supposed to go does that make it more difficult yeah and i also like the
[02:03:43] fact that like the horn things have like a production staff so they research they research
[02:03:50] the people they're going to haunt yeah it's like people moving scene there's people moving scenery
[02:03:56] and stuff right yeah they spend like a full year researching their next haunt and they have this
[02:04:00] whole staff to convert one person yes but apparently they've converted people like colonel sanders
[02:04:06] dolly parton which is blasphemy she's always been perfect um yeah and the original the book it hints
[02:04:16] at this ghost redemption business um but this really explores it so they say it's a supernatural simulation
[02:04:22] and it's like an international ghost enterprise i love there's just people walking around speaking
[02:04:27] various languages and everyone just understands them yeah marley though it seems he's no longer
[02:04:34] condemned to wander he got a promotion so good for him he's now running the show uh and scrooge has a
[02:04:42] new crisis he won't give up doing the redemptions he's been doing i'm confused about he says he's been
[02:04:48] doing this for 46 seasons but he's been dead for nearly two centuries and he said he spent 10 seasons in
[02:04:57] research and then was bumped up so how long are seasons in this whole yeah this is my one little niggle
[02:05:03] yeah it's it's a good question it's a good question and of course he's he's lost his accent but that's
[02:05:09] fine i'm just i'm like yeah i'm i'm all i'm just going along with that fair enough yeah he talks about
[02:05:15] this newfangled mouth modern mouth kisses he wants to try because he he if he retires that means being
[02:05:23] reborn only he doesn't get reborn he gets put into a man body so that he can be with octavia spencer yeah
[02:05:29] so he doesn't get like reincarnated as a baby he just gets dropped to finish his life middle-aged man
[02:05:35] yeah yeah yeah um you said before also or who was no someone else was saying that particularly like
[02:05:44] the ghost of uh christmas yet to come you know it was me because the ghost of christmas yet to come
[02:05:49] he just wants some lines yeah but he chokes yeah
[02:05:55] and so ryan reynolds his character uh clint did know the story but um rose burns character mrs
[02:06:03] karen of course you had to be karen blonsky she didn't know the story yeah yes yeah
[02:06:11] or maybe she didn't yeah maybe is that possible um according to the people of hallmark clearly
[02:06:20] because you need to look up the internet hallmark doesn't yeah this is more realistic than hallmark
[02:06:29] i like the graduation from a simulation moment i like how they set that up at the beginning
[02:06:34] you know she finishes her thing and gets a whole party in the street that nobody else sees
[02:06:38] and i don't like the sort of moment where she gets hit in the because like one of her
[02:06:44] one of the things she was doing is stopping the kids playing in the street in her like
[02:06:49] cul-de-sac and she gets hit on the back of the ball back of the head
[02:06:55] she gets hit on the back of the head with a ball and all the ghosts like hold their breath
[02:07:00] like oh she's like it's okay it's like hey um there's actually so the people who wrote this
[02:07:10] actually understand marketing there's some good but cynical lessons in marketing but that fits for
[02:07:15] the character of clint's where he's like you know people used to insist on authenticity and now
[02:07:20] there's plastic trees and people never change and he's just manipulating people to sell more trees
[02:07:26] basically yeah yeah that there's a really there's a really um awful bit with the ghost of it was
[02:07:34] supposed to be the ghost christmas past but it's actually um will ferrell where that clint's parents
[02:07:40] buy him a dog bowl to convince him that they're gonna buy oh yeah gonna buy him a dog yeah
[02:07:47] yeah so the marley situation um so first of all i love that the the musical number here reminds me of
[02:07:54] the music man song the trouble in riverside city but um i love that whole the the comedy of like
[02:08:00] he's just trying to it's like we talked about in the last movie this scrooge animated one uh where
[02:08:06] marley's like i just just let me do my thing just let me do my job here and he's just interrupting
[02:08:13] but i guess the perp doesn't need to know they're marley like they show his older sister passed away
[02:08:19] five years ago and so the niece is orphaned and living with his brother and that also the brother
[02:08:24] thing is another scrooged reference um but his sister like her portrait picks up and i thought
[02:08:33] for a moment it might be the first time i watched it i thought it because this is the second time i
[02:08:37] watched it but the first time i watched it i thought it might be like her ghost showing up
[02:08:40] but it is just a generic marley ghost who looks the makeup wise just like the scrooge ghost
[02:08:47] yeah or less yeah more or less yeah uh and then yeah his the whole thing with his his niece is orphan
[02:08:56] living with his brother and again it's like about him corrupting a protege where she wants to run for
[02:09:02] student council president and he's trying to convince her to do the dirty route to take out her opponent
[02:09:09] yeah they're doing oppo research like octavius vertigo yeah i'm doing oppo research on an 11 year old
[02:09:19] you feel for her because she's like i don't want to lose my job but this is shitty yeah
[02:09:24] hmm yeah and uh yeah though i talked about the unredeemable classification the only unredeemable
[02:09:32] before we find out eventually with scrooge but i i also like where they talk about this sort of they
[02:09:38] don't use the term butterfly effect but they say they want they call the perp the person they haunt
[02:09:43] the perp and they said they want a perp with global reach whose ripples will affect the entire world and
[02:09:50] i like that concept yeah i was thinking we were talking about dickens spending so much money in
[02:09:56] the last episode we were talking about dickens spending so much money in his book and one thing
[02:09:59] he was criticized for was um that he said he wanted the poor people to be able to read it
[02:10:06] but then he's like this really expensive edition um eventually he did he put out a much cheaper
[02:10:13] published edition of course uh for poor people to afford but i think in a way he it should be the
[02:10:20] wealthy that he's appealing to because they're the ones who he's trying to say spread the wealth
[02:10:25] like the poor know they want yeah better circumstances kinder people yeah um so octavia spencer
[02:10:35] upset about the doing what did you say oppo research on 11 year old 11 year olds yeah that song the view
[02:10:42] from here is legit a good song it is and like i didn't know octavia spencer could sing like that
[02:10:49] yeah yeah exactly very impressive this is this is maybe my favorite role i've seen her in and
[02:10:56] even just above uh what's it called the one where she plays a nasa uh oh um hidden figures yeah that
[02:11:06] was a good movie too um okay so we talked about him when christmas past came we talked about her humor
[02:11:13] and the flirting and and waylaying her uh and then you know will ferrell has to step in and do the job
[02:11:19] because he slept with her but you were saying uh something that i cut out earlier about the dog bowl
[02:11:28] yeah so clint's mom i think buys him a dog bowl to convince him that she's bought him a dog
[02:11:38] i'm thinking yeah it's not quite up there with you know we've had alcoholic fathers we've had
[02:11:44] abuse mothers it's not quite up there with any of that but it's still a really shitty thing to do
[02:11:50] yeah it was really cold yeah and it's like clint's going about this is the best lesson
[02:11:56] they ever taught me because people believe what they want to believe
[02:12:02] yeah oh yeah no it's true it's true this is how he became who he is
[02:12:07] i liked by the way with the ghost with will ferrell stepping in that reminded me of wilma from
[02:12:12] flintstones you know the trope of having someone else step in um and they also had the one present
[02:12:17] opening on christmas eve like scrooged yeah you know what's funny is so i have some notes in here
[02:12:25] about apparently he had a girlfriend named nora but i don't really remember her and i just watched
[02:12:31] the movie like a like a few days ago or whatever but that was a part of the plot at the end when he's
[02:12:38] dead does he see her again i think no he sees his sister right no she's just it's this an ex i guess
[02:12:46] okay that's fine um i love when they go to the past and they go to the mall and he's like there wasn't
[02:12:52] a sephora there they're like oh yeah no we have a we have a placement deal
[02:13:02] another interesting touch is that he is able to jump over to the other side a couple times one
[02:13:07] times he he follows will ferrell there and another time he's pulled there yeah so there's sort of a
[02:13:14] an open door between the two sides and the ghost can decide who and can and cannot see them yes but
[02:13:21] yeah the most inspired thing was finding a way to shoehorn the victoria era in there by victorian
[02:13:27] era in there by having them travel back to scrooge's own past yeah so how long were you reformed for
[02:13:34] then about three weeks about three weeks about three years months weeks yeah leading cause of death is
[02:13:42] january um i have to call out that this scrooge reveal happens at one hour in david on the lore hounds
[02:13:51] often says you know watch at the one hour mark is when they make the big change that subverts the
[02:13:55] movie yeah so that falls in the line there um and that's when we get the good afternoon song which is
[02:14:01] like this is the probably the thing people remember most about this film the good afternoon is treated as
[02:14:07] a filthy curse word but actually it is kind of i mean it's it's it's from the book faithful to the
[02:14:16] book but it is taken from yeah because he says because he his nephew's saying merry christmas and
[02:14:22] he's like good afternoon like i said merry christmas i said good afternoon
[02:14:29] but do you think the song itself was inspired by thank you very much like the sort of cadence of it
[02:14:34] it was yeah the cadence of it is the cadence of it is very similar yeah
[02:14:40] yeah i'm sort of like the clint's line i've never done tap before it's a very expressive it's a very
[02:14:47] expressive medium yeah yeah and at this point the film like becomes kind of a buddy comedy which is
[02:14:54] just yeah yeah and you know you see clint he's been the bad influence on the ghost but then
[02:15:01] this is the thing is like he is just a bad influence and he stops himself when he notices
[02:15:08] what a bad influence he's being on his niece like when he sees that his niece destroyed this poor kid who
[02:15:15] posted something snarky about having to volunteer at a hotel at a homeless shelter um he destroys him
[02:15:23] and the kid ends up taking his own life like see there's another it takes it has some dark serious death
[02:15:29] moments in there and then he's like oh no i've gone too far i've gone too far
[02:15:35] yeah and then he's confronted with his sister's death scene where he's actually
[02:15:40] he's actually asked to you know directly to his face to take care of his niece and he just doesn't
[02:15:46] he's like no he says no to his sister his sister dies knowing
[02:15:50] that she that her brother is you know not going to help her niece yeah
[02:15:57] really sad yeah yeah and like i said it like you said it does have i think that i think that is what
[02:16:04] kind of balances the film out is it does have it does have some emotional depth to it and it doesn't
[02:16:13] come up on like it's better handled than a diva's diva's christmas because a diva's christmas
[02:16:19] like the darkness just comes up and sort of smacks you in the head it's like it feels really abrupt
[02:16:26] this feels much more like an organic part of the story right right it's layered with more nuance here
[02:16:34] yeah for sure yeah yeah and then we yeah will ferrell wakes up in bed with clint as an adult
[02:16:40] and then the ghost of christmas yet to come comes after clint helps scrooge and the redemption arc
[02:16:45] is like yeah we get the full arc um we get a i like the futuristic graveyard they're updating it
[02:16:54] and then we get an ass kicking yeah it's like a digital graveyard yeah yeah there's a taxi driver
[02:17:03] in there i have to guess that's another scrooge reference but yeah the the major thing and you
[02:17:09] know the moment at the end is ryan reynolds characters clint is basically saying like i'm
[02:17:15] you know i felt bad for these specific people that i care about but like don't expect this reform to
[02:17:22] last forever and then he dies he dies saving his friends so he's proven that he was wrong about not
[02:17:30] being changed but also that's the end yeah he takes on scrooge's role running the uh right
[02:17:37] running he negotiates that he's like i don't want to go to the other side he's his sister shows up to
[02:17:42] accept him to the other side he's like how about she and i stay here and do this job that i know
[02:17:48] means i can actually talk to people yeah yeah so they both have access to life again yeah yeah and uh
[02:17:58] and scrooge's plop back into the real world and sets up house with octavia spencer's character and
[02:18:07] they have children yeah and sometimes he gets annoyed with them like real people do yeah
[02:18:12] yeah i mean i you know i would actually even be open to a sequel to this where would you think
[02:18:18] yeah i could see a sequel working uh which is there any other film that we've talked about that you
[02:18:24] could see a sequel for no not really no yeah i think because the originals so yeah yeah this one
[02:18:34] is the only one i could really imagine a sequel for and i'd i yeah i would definitely watch it
[02:18:38] watch the hell of it this is the thing it's it's you could say it's it's like just as in terms of
[02:18:46] the amount of stuff it takes from the book but also the amount of stuff it leaves it's you know it's
[02:18:52] probably just behind a diva um the 2022 version of a diva's christmas carol yeah i knew how different
[02:18:59] is but i think the difference is this takes the spirit of the book this takes the the the ideas
[02:19:07] in the book whereas a diva's christmas carol the 2022 uh two version just doesn't it just has nothing
[02:19:16] to do with the novella this has like the spirit of the novella in it even though it is is in a lot
[02:19:25] ways a very different story yeah no they've clearly they've clearly read the book and watched
[02:19:31] a bunch of the adaptations yeah they they know the story yeah they know what they're doing yeah yeah
[02:19:36] yeah well any final thoughts on this year's batch of films overall no it's just that i've i've really
[02:19:47] enjoyed this project um thanks for um thanks for all the work you've put into it alicia selecting
[02:19:55] most of the films and doing all the notes for it so thank you very much um and the editing's the worst
[02:20:02] and the editing yeah um but yeah i've really enjoyed that i've really enjoyed um watching all the films
[02:20:09] and recording this with you um like i said in the last episode i think we we've bitten off more than
[02:20:16] we can chew so if your particular favorite adaptation wasn't in there sorry i'm sure we'll get to it in
[02:20:24] due course tell us what it is and we'll make sure we do for 2025 but yeah i've really enjoyed doing
[02:20:31] this yeah any okay so if you had to recommend out of all the films we watch this year you have to pick
[02:20:37] two to recommend to someone to what would you recommend i'm gonna be really boring okay and really
[02:20:46] predictable uh-huh i'm gonna go with the muppets okay and i'm gonna go with spirited okay um i am going
[02:20:54] to go with um oh it's tough i'm okay i'm thinking of a classic but then i'm like torn between on the one
[02:21:04] hand i want to say 1951 on the other hand like the 1971 short is so faithful and short um i do think
[02:21:15] you need a classic in order to approve to appreciate spirited and spirited is the one i would choose from
[02:21:21] this week okay no well listeners uh as we said we want to hear your favorites christmas carols uh let

[02:24:08] looking at world politics in 2024 okay we had too much stuff to cover in a single podcast so we split
